The Nicholls Colonels (3-4, 3-2 SLC) look to continue their strong start in Southland Conference play as they head to Natchitoches for a matchup against Northwestern State on Saturday, Oct. 29 in Turpin Stadium. The game will be televised locally on WHNO-TV and will stream online on ESPN3. Radio broadcast for the contest will be on KLEB 1600 AM and online via ESPN Radio New Orleans. The Colonels saw their perfect home record come to an end with a loss to top-ranked Sam Houston State last weekend. The Bearkats, featuring the nation s No. 1 scoring offense, raced out to a 24-0 lead at the half before the Colonels got things going after the break. RB C.J. Okpalobi rushed for a touchdown, and QB Chase Fourcade scored on a trick play before fi nding WR C.J. Bates for a late touchdown catch. The Colonels are 3-4 in road conference games under head coach Tim Rebowe, with all three wins coming in the last four contests. Nicholls started 2015 with two tough losses on the road (20-10 at UIW; at SFA), but fi nished strong with a pair of late wins (30-28 at Lamar; at SLU). Following a setback at McNeese this season, Nicholls picked up a double-overtime victory at HBU. Saturday marks the 44th meeting between the in-state programs with the Demons holding a advantage after last year s win. In 21 games in Natchitoches, the Demons have captured victories 17 times versus just four losses. The last meeting at Turpin Stadium was in 2014 as NSU cruised to a victory. The Colonels will be facing two of their former head coaches - Jay Thomas, who directed the program from , and Daryl Daye, who was the head coach from Thomas compiled a mark at Nicholls and a record in Southland play during his six-year tenure. Thomas most notable accomplishment was the program s only Southland Conference championship which he led the Colonels to the title in Thomas, who is 2-1 against his former team, is in his fourth season as head coach at Northwestern State. Daye posted his best season in 2002, leading Nicholls to a 7-4 mark as the squad led the NCAA in rushing offense. Daye is in his second season under Thomas at NSU, serving as associate head coach and defensive coordinator. Date (STATS/HC Rank) Opponent Time/Result Series/Last (Yr.) Sam Houston had 77 yards rushing on 22 carries last week after heading into the matchup with an SLC-best ypg 4 A win over Northwestern State would give the Colonels win No. 4 in league play. Since joining the Southland in 1991, Nicholls has won four or more SLC games in just two seasons (1996, 4-2; 2005, 5-1) 5 Nicholls has played a total of five overtimes this season - one in single OT and two going double. Before this season, the last game that did not end in regulation was a four-overtime victory at Texas State in The Colonels loss at South Alabama would have probably gone into double OT as well, but Nicholls went for 2 instead of kicking the extra point 6th The Colonels have scored three non-offensive touchdowns this season, which ranks 6th in the FCS. Nicholls scored two at South Alabama - a 33-yd INT return by Chris Major and a 51-yd return by Christian Boutte on a blocked FG. At HBU, Ronald Ollie returned a blocked FG 84 yards for a touchdown 36.4 Nicholls is averaging just 36.4 penalty yards per game, ranking 3rd out of 122 teams in the FCS. Against Sam Houston, the Colonels were fl agged only 4 times for 19 yards WE ARE NICHOLLS OUR ABBREVIATION IS NICH. PLEASE REFRAIN FROM USING NICHOLLS STATE AND NSU. THANK YOU. SCOUTING Northwestern State heads into the matchup searching for its first win in league play. The Demons have had tough luck in two of their losses, losing by a combined four points (21-18 vs. UIW, vs. Lamar). NSU s lone win this season came against Division II Kentucky Wesleyan. The Demons led 21-7 at the break before scoring four touchdowns in the second half for a 49-7 victory. The Demon offense is led by QB Brooks Haack. After starting at Louisiana-Lafayette last season, Haack transfered to NSU to play his fi nal season. At ULL, he threw for over 1,400 yards and had fi ve TD passes. NSU ranks third in the Southland in rushing offense, averaging yards per contest. Thirteen of the Demons 20 offensive touchdowns have come on the ground. OCT 29 ON THIS DATE IN COLONEL HISTORY... LAST MEETING ( ) NORTHWESTERN STATE 37 NICHOLLS 21 THIBODAUX, La. Nicholls had a pair of 100-yard rushers in Michael Henry and Tuskani Figaro, but the Colonels were unable to limit Northwestern State s ground game as the Demons racked up 348 yards rushing en route to a victory over Nicholls on Saturday at John L. Guidry Stadium. For the second straight weekend, the weather played a major role in the teams offensive playcalling as heavy rain and gusty winds forced both squads to look to its running game. The Colonels gained 310 yards rushing, but lost a total of 51 which included yardage lost on sacks and a high snap that resulted in a safety. Henry rushed for a career-high 154 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, while Figaro finished with his sixth career 100-yard game, tallying 114 yards and a score on 17 carries. Unlike last weekend at Sam Houston, Nicholls was able to pass the ball as Figaro tallied 176 yards on 15 of 28 attempts; however, turnovers proved costly as the Red and Gray gave up the ball four times three times on fumbles and one on an interception. Both teams turned the football over to start the contest as Figaro lost the ball on the fourth play of the game, but Chris Major intercepted a pass from Stephen Rivers to give Nicholls the ball back. The Colonels then struck first as Figaro hit Henry for a 19-yard touchdown pass for the early lead. The Demons quickly answered by rushing the ball on all seven plays of their scoring drive, capped on a 1-yard plunge by De Mard Llorens. The NSU tailback caused problems for Nicholls all game as he racked up 166 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Llorens added two more scores 24 yards and 13 yards - on NSU s next two possessions, giving the Demons a 21-7 lead early in the second quarter. Nicholls then went 74 yards on 11 plays to make it a one-possession game. Terry Lucas Jr. and C.J. Bates both had two receptions on the drive, and Henry polished it off with a 1-yard rush with 1:49 until halftime. Both Bates and Lucas finished with four receptions for 47 yards. To start the third, Llorens had a 28-yard rush to fuel a scoring drive for the Demons and added his fourth touchdown on a 2-yard run. On the ensuing possession, the Colonels had a bad snap on their own 20 and the ball went out of the back of the end zone for a safety, making the score With 8:12 remaining in third, Demon running back Daniel Taylor caught a pass in the flat from Stephen Rivers and took it 38 yards to pay dirt for a commanding lead. Before the end of the third, Figaro found an opening down the left sideline and scored on a 39-yard touchdown run to trim the deficit to Early in the fourth, Llorens looked to be on his way to his fifth touchdown of the day, but Ahmani Martin chased him down on a 42-yard rush before he crossed the goal line, stripping the ball into the end zone for a touchback. However, the Demon defense was stout the rest of the way, holding Nicholls to one first down in its next two drives. On the Colonels final drive, Chase Collins put the stamp on NSU s victory with an interception. 4 OFFENSIVE NOTES QUARTERBACKS One of the top recruits of Tim Rebowe s highly-touted 2016 signing class was Rummel graduate CHASE FOURCADE. A three-year starter, Fourcade brings a long list of accolades to Nicholls including all-state honors, but more importantly, a winning pedigree. His class at Archbishop Rummel put together an impressive 46-6 record and claimed two state titles - with Fourcade leading the team in its second. FOURCADE has started all seven games this season Averaging yards passing in conference play, which ranks 4th in the league Best performance yardage wise came against McNeese (341 yards). Had not rushed for more than 8 times before SFA game (18 car., 59 yds, 2 TDs) Totaled four TDs in win over SFA (2 passing, 2 rushing) Has a TD pass in all but one game (at McNeese) Scored on a trick play against Sam Houston, where he threw it to the fl at to C.J. Bates, who passed it back across the fi eld. Fourcade ran for 30 yards into the end zone for the Colonels second TD RUNNING BACKS CJ OKPALOBI totaled over 100 yards of offense against Sam Houston, rushing for 68 and a score while adding 3 rec. for 54 yards Recorded his second career 100-yard game with 103 yards at HBU. Had a career-best 58 rush. Won the game in double OT with a 12- yard score. Totaled 137 yards and two TDs in the win over SFA. Rushed for 70 yards and posted a career best 5 receptions for 67 yards and his fi rst career TD catch, which went for 36 yards. Rushed 26 times for a career-high 115 yards in the win over UIW. He also found the end zone twice, scoring on 5- and 4-yard runs in the second half. Had 9 carries for 48 yards at USA, but fumbled at the goal line on a 24-yard carry. The ball stayed with the Colonels at the 1, which resulted in a 1-yard TD by sophomore fullback MASON BOUDREAUX. Led the rushing attack against UGA, tallying 21 carries for 55 yards. In his fi rst career start, Okpalobi was able to break free once as he scampered had a long rush that went for 10 yards. RECEIVERS AND TIGHT ENDS The Colonels return three of their four top receivers from last season, led by senior C.J. BATES. A transfer from Louisiana-Lafayette, Bates had a team-best 28 catches for 395 yards and three touchdowns. Had one catch at Georgia, hauling in a 6-yard TD in the fourth quarter after out-leaping the UGA defender on a fade. Followed up with six receptions for 107 yards vs UIW. Had 3 rec. for 30 yards at USA and 7 for 71 at McNeese. Caught 3 passes for 43 yards at HBU. Finished with 7 rec. for 49 yards and a TD against Sam Houston. Sophomore DAMION JEANPIERE leads the Colonels in receiving with 399 yards and 4 TDs on 25 receptions. Has a TD reception in 4 of the last 6 games Led team with 58 yards receiving (6 rec.) against Sam Houston Caught a 50-yd TD pass at HBU to give Nicholls a lead in 2Q. Finished with 4 rec. for 90 yard. His 16-yard grab at USA gave Nicholls a lead in the 4th. After SFA scored to start OT, Jeanpiere hauled in a 25-yarder on the fi rst play to send the game into a 2nd OT. OFFENSIVE LINE Anchoring the offensive line of the left side is senior CHRIS BORDELON. After sitting out 2015, Bordelon has been a welcomed addition to the offense after being the highest graded lineman for the 2014 campaign. Directing the line is sophomore center RYAN HANLEY. A true freshman last season, Hanley was inserted into the starting lineup midway through the season and went on to earn All-Southland honorable mention. After redshirting in 2014, TUSKANI FIGARO started the fi rst nine games last year before suffering a season-ending injury. His best single game in 2015 came in the win over Houston Baptist where he completed 18 of 25 passes for 134 yards and rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns. As a sophomore, Figaro set the Colonels singleseason rushing record in 2013 with 1,103 yards. A late addition to the roster was Tulane transfer DEVIN POWELL. Standing at 6-foot-3 and 240 lbs, Powell gives the Colonels another physical quarterback to throw in the mix. Serving as a backup for most of his career with the Green Wave, Powell put together an outstanding effort against Rebowe and the Ragin Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette in the 2013 New Orleans Bowl, as he threw for 224 yards to lead a comeback effort. Powell was 2-for-2 in his Colonel debut at Georgia, but lost the ball on a sack which resulted in a touchdown return. True freshman DONTRELL TAYLOR led Nicholls on the ground at South Alabama, rushing for a career-high 125 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries. Taylor toted the ball three times to cover all 25 yards in OT, scoring on a 4-yard plunge into the endzone. Taylor has 242 yards rushing (80.7 ypg/4.3 ypc) and has scored one TD in each contest. Has missed the last few games with an injury. Of the six running backs on the Colonels 2016 roster, only C.J. OKPALOBI had carried the ball at the college level, and that was only 10 times. Freshman CHRISTIAN BOOKER hauled in a touchdown pass in the win over UIW. Followed up with a 4-catch, 73 yard game at McNeese. Booker had a highlight one-had grab for 20 yards. Senior JOSH SINGLETON caught a career-best 5 rec. for 40 yards against Sam Houston. JARRELL ROGERS, another former Ragin Cajun, fi nished last year with 130 yards on 12 receptions. Rogers caught all three of his receptions (52 yds) in the Colonels lead-taking drive at Georgia, capped on a 20-yard TD. Rogers caught the ball in the fl at, raced to the end zone and dove just inside the pylon for the score. STEPHEN LeBOUEF had a career day against UIW as he pulled in four receptions for 46 yards. LeBouef scored his fi rst career TD last season in the game against Central Arkansas. Another youngster on the offensive line is right tackle CHANDLER ARCENEAUX. In his fi rst season as a redshirt freshman last year, Arceneaux was a key factor in the Colonels improved protection as the line reduced its sacks from 56 in 2014 to 28. Starting at guards are JARED BREAUX and junior BRIAN HERNANDEZ. Breaux is in his senior campaign, while Hernandez returned after logging three starts last season. CAREER LEADERS PASSING YDS 1. Led Against South Alabama, had a team-high 13 tackles, a forced fumble and a 4th-quarter interception that led to the Colonels fi nal touchdown of regulation for a lead. Was named LSWA Defensive Player of the Week. Finished with 11 tackles in win at HBU, including 8 solo. Had 6 tackles against McNeese and SFA. Led Nicholls against UGA with 8 stops. Senior JEFF HALL, a transfer from Colorado, has three picks for the Colonels in his second season. His INT at HBU in the 4Q set up a fi eld goal for a lead. Also recovered a muffed punt return by Nicholls and picked up a loose punt for a 16-yard return. Had a highlight INT at Georgia, catching a tipped pass at the 2 and returning it 91 yards to the 7 after fi ghting off a defender for 15 yards. Sealed the victory against UIW with a 46-yard interception with a minute remaining in the game. Blocked a 49-yard fi eld goal attempt in the second quarter at USA and it was recovered by BOUTTE for a 51-yard touchdown return. SPECIAL TEAMS Junior DAVID McKEY took over the kicking duties after two-year starter Francisco Condado graduated. McKey has had a solid start, making 7-of-11 fi eld goals this season. Was 2-of-3 at HBU. Made a career-long 44-yarder and his 35-yarder with 6 seconds remaining sent the game in overtime. Junior TYLER ST. GERMAIN booted the ball a career-high 11 times in the win over SFA, averaging 42.9 yards. He saved his best for last as he sailed a kick 56 yards at the end of regulation to put any chance of a game-winning drive out of reach. JUCO transfers - RONALD OLLIE and MARCEL ANDRY have been a welcoming presence in the middle of the defensive line. Against UIW, Andry had four stops and one for loss, while Ollie was credited with three. OLLIE had a huge game against SFA, recording 5 tackles, 1 sack and broke up a pass. OLLIE logged a career-high 8 tackles and 2.5 for loss at HBU. Scored his fi rst career touchdown on a blocked fi eld goal. Had at least 3 tackles in the fi rst six games. In his fi rst career game, true freshman EVAN VERON had six tackles at UGA and followed up with fi ve against South Alabama. Against McNeese, intercepted a pass at midfi eld for his fi rst career pick. Against SFA, his interception at midfi eld led to the Colonels game-tying touchdown right before the half (14-14). Picked up his third pick last week against Sam Houston. SANDERS was one of four players in the secondary to record an interception against South Alabama. Before Sanders pick, sophomore CHRIS MAJOR put Nicholls on the board with a 33-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter. Three minutes later, AHMANI MARTIN picked off a pass which led to the Colonels third TD of the quarter. In the fourth, COREY ABRAHAM notched his fi rst career INT on a 4th-down try at midfi eld. MARTIN has 31 tackles on the year from the safety position, recording a season-high nine at HBU. Sophomore WESLEY BARNETT returned at long snapper after starting last season as a true freshman. Barnett has logged two tackles already this season. The Colonels struggled in the return game last season, ranking last in kick returns (16.2 ypr) and 9th in punt returns (3.5 ypr). True freshman receiver STEFANO GUARISCO has helped cure those woes as he is averaging 22.2 yards per kick return. He had a 43-yarder in his fi rst career game against UIW, and followed up with 77- and 52-yard returns against South Alabama. 6 LAGNIAPPES HOW TO SAY OKPALOBI For his entire career at Nicholls - PA, radio broadcasters and TV announcers have struggled to correctly pronounce C.J. Okpalobi s last name. The k is silent, and here is another helpful hint. Ok = Oh Palo = pala as in the car, Chevy Impala. bi = bee OH-pala-bee NICHOLLS-NSU CONNECTION The main storyline in the series for the last few years has been Jay Thomas facing his former team. Thomas was the head coach at Nicholls from and led the Colonels to their fi rst and only Southland Conference title in This will mark the fourth time he has faced Nicholls since taking over at NSU (2 wins, 1 loss). DON T BELIEVE ME, JUST WATCH DT Sully Laiche was recently named to the STATS FCS Freshman of the Year Watch List. Laiche has been a playmaker since he stepped onto the fi eld, ranking third on the team in tackles (44), and fi rst in tackles for loss (7.5) and sacks (4.0). He also forced a fumbled in double OT to seal the win against SFA, and his blocked fi eld goal at HBU led to a fi rst-quarter return for at TD. BEST OF THE BEST While the Colonels have never played at home as the No. 1 team, they have hosted the top-ranked team three times. In 1995, McNeese came to town with the honor and defeated the Colonels, In 1999, Nicholls was defeated by former Southland member Troy, Sam Houston was ranked No. 1 last week and picked up a victory. MCKEY TO SUCCESS In his fi rst season as the Colonels place kicker, junior David McKey has connected on 7-of-11 fi eld goals. Last week at HBU, he made a career-long 44-yarder and nailed a 35-yard fi eld goal with six seconds remaining to send the game into overtime. McKey currently ranks 25th in the FCS with 1.17 fi eld goals per game WEEKLY HONORS RONALD OLLIE (Oct. 15 at HBU) - STATS FCS ST POW honorable mention - Southland Conference Special Teams - LSWA Special Teams - Blocked FG 84-yard return for touchdown SULLY LAICHE (Oct. 8 vs. SFA) - STATS FCS Defensive - Southland Conference Defensive - LSWA Defensive - 14 tackles, 1.0 sack, 2.5 TFL, forced fumble to win game in double OT (Sept. 17 vs. UIW) - STATS FCS Freshman honorable mention sacks B.T. For the fi rst time in school history, the Colonels will be taking on Tulane and LSU on the gridrion. Nicholls will head to Yulman Stadium in 2018 to face the Green Wave, and in 2020, the Red and Gray make a trip to Death Valley to play the LSU Tigers. BREAKING BAD Since Coach Rebowe arrived, he has been putting an end to several losing streaks. With the win over Houston Baptist in 2015, the Colonels not only gave Rebowe his fi rst career win, but also closed the books on a 23-game losing streak. A few weeks later at Lamar, Nicholls put to rest two road skids - 18 Southland road games and 16 straight away games. While Nicholls ended the 8-game drought against SFA, they still have lengthy losing streaks against Sam Houston (10 games), McNeese (8) and Central Arkansas (7). 12 TIM REBOWE 6-12, 6-8 SLC SECOND SEASON AS HEAD COACH LSU, 1987 In his fi rst season as head coach at Nicholls, Tim Rebowe revived the Colonel program which had went winless in 2014 by leading the team to a 3-8 record. Rebowe quickly turned things around as the team nearly won two of its fi rst three conference games before ending a lengthy losing streak with a victory over Houston Baptist. With their fi rst taste of victory since 2013, the Colonels went to close out the season with two more wins in its fi nal three games highlighted by a thrilling victory in the River Bell Classic at Southeastern Louisiana. Rebowe vowed to build the program by recruiting local talent, and his two fi rst recruiting classes consisted of 49 Louisiana natives out of a total of 52 signees. In his fi rst signing class, Rebowe welcomed 26 student-athletes - all from the Pelican State and the majority coming from within a 100-mile radius of Thibodaux. The 2016 recruiting class has been donned by some as the best in the program s history. Rebowe, a 53-year old native of Norco, La., was named head football coach on Nov. 21, 2014, becoming the 10th in the program s history. Rebowe, who coached at Louisiana-Lafayette as an assistant for 11 seasons and was a former assistant coach at Nicholls for six years, not only brought a wealth of experience coaching at the collegiate level, but has strong ties to the state of Louisiana having coached within the borders his entire career. In 2014, ULL s defense ranked fi rst in the Sun Belt in rushing yards allowed and red zone defense, while ranking second in points allowed. The defense fi nished with seven interceptions on the year, including two by cornerback Corey Trim, who was named All-Sun Belt Second Team Defense. Under Rebowe s tutelage in 2013, the Cajuns tied for the conference lead with 14 interceptions. Two years prior, his safeties combined for fi ve interceptions, with three returned for touchdowns. Rebowe s group had a stellar year in his fi rst season as defensive backs coach in 2004 as the defense ranked 11th in the nation in passing yards allowed. Both of his starting safeties that year, C.C. Brown and Antwain Spann, would go on to the NFL. The following season, the pass defense fi nished 23rd in the nation in yards allowed. As a linebackers coach, Rebowe guided the team s leading tackler in all three seasons and also had two players earn All-Sun Belt recognition. In 1995, Rebowe took his fi rst collegiate job, joining Darren Barbier s staff at Nicholls. From 95-99, he served as defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator before coaching the receivers in Rebowe was part of the biggest turnaround in FCS history as the Colonels went 0-11 in 95 before earning a playoff spot the very next season with an 8-4 mark. Rebowe began his coaching career in 1988 at his alma mater, Destrehan High School. While there, he coached Super Bowl Champion and future NFL Hall of Famer Ed Reed. Following his stint with Nicholls, Rebowe coached the cornerbacks at ULM from Rebowe helped lead the Ragin Cajun program to four consecutive New Orleans Bowl victories and a conference championship under head coach Mark Hudspeth. During his tenure at ULL, Rebowe served as the safeties coach ( , ) and linebackers coach ( ). Rebowe earned his bachelor of science in physical education from LSU in He is married to the former Kim Robichaux and they have a daughter, Samantha, and a son, Tyler, who graduated from Nicholls in the spring of RECORD BREAKDOWN Home Away vs. FCS Ranked Teams vs. FBS vs. FCS vs. Other vs. Southland August September October November December When team rushes for 200 yards When team rushes for 300 yards When team passes for 200 yards When team passes for 300 yards When team rushes under 100 yards Player rushes for 100 yards Two players rush for 100 yards Opponent has 100-yard rusher Scoring 30-or-more points Scoring 40-or-more points Hold opponent to 10-points or less Scoring fi rst Leading at halftime Trailing at halftime Tied at halftime Games decided by 11 points or more Games decided by 10 points or less Games decided by 7 or less Games decided by 3 or less Overtime
