2 2017 BISON FOOTBALL MEDIA BISON The Bucknell football team returns to Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium for the first time since September to take on Lehigh on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 12 p.m. The Bison, who had their two-game winning streak snapped at Colgate on Oct. 28, will look to score a Homecoming victory over the defending Patriot League champions. With a victory the Bison would... move to all-time on Homecoming win their fourth Homecoming game in the past five seasons even their Patriot League record at 2-2 snap a two-game losing slide to Lehigh defeat Pennsylvania rivals Lafayette and Lehigh in the same season for only the third time since 1997 (others 1997 and 2014) help head coach Joe Susan tie Bob Odell for sixth in program history in career victories (37) Inside the Colgate Box Score Colgate scored four unanswered touchdowns in the second quarter to down Bucknell, Nick Ioanilli intercepted a pair of passes for the Raiders, directly leading to two of those scores. In the first half, Colgate outgained Bucknell, , and held a 15-4 advantage in first downs. The tables turned in the second half, with the Bison holding edges in yards (169-93) and first downs (10-4). DL Abdullah Anderson and S Joe Lauro each blocked his first career extra point. It was Anderson s fourth career blocked kick, as he previously blocked three field goals. In the third quarter, Anderson corralled a pass that was deflected by LB Mark Pyles on Colgate s 12-yard line. While the Bison reached the one-yard line, a fumbled handoff ultimately gave the Raiders the ball back on their seven-yard line. That was Anderson s first career interception. He became the fourth Bison to pick off his first career pass in 2017, joining Ss Aaron Brown, Jon Fox and Drew Newcomb. QB Matt Muh entered the game in the second half and threw for 133 yards on 11 for 23 passing. QB John Chiarolanzio completed five of 10 passes for 37 yards. WRs Justin Bethea (48) and Mike Balzofiore (41) led the Bison in receiving yards, both setting a new career high in the process. Defensively, a pair of freshmen reached the double digits in tackles: S Brandon Benson (12) and LB Simeon Page (11). It was Benson s second double-digit tackle game and Page s first. Bucknell last blocked multiple kicks in the same game on Nov. 19, 2016 when Anderson blocked a pair of field goals in a loss to Fordham. The Bison last allowed 40 points in a game on Oct. 29, 2016, a loss at then No. 9 Charleston Southern. Colgate went 6-for-6 on its red-zone chances, scoring six touchdowns. Bucknell went 1-for-4 in the red zone. Bucknell at a Glance Bucknell is 4-4 (1-2 Patriot League) on the season and currently owns the Patriot League s second-best overall winning percentage. The Bison went 3-2 in non-conference action. This is the sixth time in Joe Susan s tenure as head coach Bucknell posted a winning record in non-conference play. The Bison, who placed fourth in the Patriot League with a 3-3 record a year ago, were picked to take fifth in the 2017 preseason poll. Bucknell returned 39 of its 59 letterwinners from That group includes 15 seniors, 14 juniors and nine sophomores. Six seniors DL Abdullah Anderson, S Connor Golden, CB Trey Johnson, TE Andrew Podbielski, LB Mark Pyles and LB Ben Richard are three-time letterwinners. In addition, Anderson, Marine and Richard were honored on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team while Anderson was named to the Reese s Senior Bowl s 2018 Watch List. Bucknell ranks in the FCS s top 30 in net punting (11th, 38.90) and total defense (15th, 301.3). The Bison have excelled at stopping the passing game, allowing an average of just passing yards per game. They held seven of their eight opponents under 200 passing yards, including three under 150 in Marist (130), William & Mary (105) and Lafayette (90). CB Colin Jonov ranks in the FCS s top three in both interception return yards (2nd, 159) and interception return touchdowns (t-2nd, 2). Other Bison in the FCS s top 25 in their respective statistical categories include S Drew Newcomb (interception return touchdowns, t-6th, 1), P Alex Pechin (punting, 7th, 44.0), K John Burdick (field goals per game, t-24th, 1.13) and LB/DE Simeon Page (sacks, t-24th,.75). Lehigh at a Glance The Mountain Hawks are currently 2-6 (2-1 Patriot League) on the season. After going 0-6 in non-conference play, they defeated Colgate (41-38) and Georgetown (54-35) in their first two Patriot games. Last Saturday, they fell at Fordham, 45-35, to suffer their first Patriot League loss since Nov. 14, 2015 at Colgate (42-49). Lehigh has been involved in high-scoring games throughout The average total of points scored in a Mountain Hawk game is Lehigh ranks in the FCS s top 15 in scoring offense (t-11th, 35.9) and bottom 15 in scoring defense (122nd, 45.0). The Mountain Hawks are third in the FCS in total offense (499.8) and fourth in passing offense (343.9). Lehigh, which won the Patriot League with a perfect 6-0 record a year ago, was selected to defend its tile in the 2017 preseason poll. Seven Mountain Hawks earned a league-best nine spots on the Preseason All-Patriot Team. WR Troy Pelletier and RB Dominick Bragalone were honored as STATS Preseason All-Americans. Pelletier was also named to the watch list for the Walter Payton Award. Pelletier is fourth in the FCS in receptions per game (8.3), seventh in receiving yards (894) and ninth in receiving yard per game (111.8). He set a Patriot League record with 16 receptions against Georgetown. Bragalone is fifth in the FCS in rushing yards (863) and rushing yards per game (107.9) and tied for fifth in rushing touchdowns (9). QB Brad Mayes is second in the FCS in passing yards (2,732) and passing yards per game (341.5) and tied for second in passing touchdowns (23). He is one of only seven FCS quarterbacks who have cleared 2,500 passing yards to date. The Bucknell/Lehigh Series Lehigh leads the all-time series, , and has won eight of the past 10 meetings. From 1998 to 2012, the Mountain Hawks ran together a 15-game winning streak over Bucknell, the longest by either team in the all-time series. The Bison ended that streak with an emphatic victory over then No. 15 Lehigh during their 2013 Homecoming game. Bucknell then won the 2014 contest, 45-24, before dropping the 2015 (10-21) and 2016 (13-20) games. Last season, the Mountain Hawks, ranked No. 21/24 at the time, clinched their 11th Patriot League title with their victory over the Bison on Nov. 5 in Bethlehem, Pa. With 1:46 to go in the third quarter, Nick Shafnisky found Gatlin Casey for a nineyard touchdown to turn a Bucknell lead into a Lehigh advantage. The Mountain Hawks extended their edge to just over a minute later after Pierce Ripanti intercepted a pass in the red zone, setting up a 20-yard field goal. They then held the Bison scoreless the rest of the way. Bucknell limited Lehigh to a season-low 20 points and 357 yards of total offense. The Mountain Hawks entered the game averaging 42.2 points and yards per game. WR Will Carter became only the fourth Bison to catch three touchdown passes in a single game while also accumulating 246 receiving yards, which ranks second in school history. His touchdown receptions were 69, 78 and 77 yards long. The Bison scored 31 unanswered points in a span of less than 20 minutes from late in the first quarter to early in the third frame, turning a 7-0 deficit into a 31-7 advantage. After Lehigh closed the gap to with 6:46 left to play, Bucknell scored the game s final two touchdowns. Bucknell on Homecoming The Bison are (.500) all-time on Homecoming. Bucknell is 11-9 (.550) in Homecoming games over the past 20 years. The Bison won their 2016 (42-17 over Lafayette), 2014 (27-24 OT over Lafayette) and 2013 (48-10 over then No. 15 Lehigh) Homecoming contests. This will be the 13th time Bucknell will face Lehigh in its Homecoming game. The Bison are against the Mountain Hawks on Homecoming. Before the 2013 victory, Bucknell last defeated Lehigh in a Homecoming game in 1967 (14-3 on Oct. 14). The Mountain Hawks spoiled the Bison s 1973, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1989, 1995 and 2009 Homecomings. At halftime during Saturday s game, the six members of the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2017 will be recognized. They are Lectie Altman 06, Kevin Bettencourt 06, Melanie Buczko Lincoln 07, Maria Garcia Harkley 04, Charles Lee 06 and Chris McNaughton 07. The Bison are also excited to welcome back the 1997 cross country teams. Inside the Bucknell Depth Chart Nine seniors, four juniors, four sophomores and five freshmen are expected to start. Bucknell s 11 projected starters on offense have made a combined 116 starts. Bucknell s 11 projected starters on defense have made a combined 181 starts. DL Abdullah Anderson missed his first career game at Cornell on Oct. 14, Before that, he had started every game during his time as a Bison, a streak of 38 in a row. He returned to the lineup at Lafayette and started his 40th game at Colgate. CB Trey Johnson is the only senior who has played in all 41 games during his time as a Bison. LB Mark Pyles is set to become the third senior to play in his 40th career game against Lehigh. LB Ben Richard (30), Pyles (17), CB Bryan Marine (11) and OL Chase Watkins (11) are Bucknell s leaders in consecutive starts. Richard became the second Bison senior to run a starting streak to 30 at Colgate. TE Andrew Podbielski made 23-straight starts at tight end from Sept. 19, 2015 to Sept. 16, His streak, which was the third longest on the team at the time, was snapped due to injury against Sacred Heart. After a two-game absence, he returned to the lineup at Cornell. Anderson and CB Colin Jonov are the only players on the 2017 roster who have started every game they played in while at Bucknell. Jonov, who missed the 2016 campaign and the Monmouth and Cornell games due to injury, owns 22 career starts. There are 13 players on the roster who have started at least 10 games: Anderson (40), Richard (31), Pyles (28), Podbielski (27), Marine (23), Jonov (22), S Connor Golden (20), WR Alan Butler (17), Watkins (17), RB Joey DeFloria (16), S Joe Lauro (16), TE/FB Andrew Owers (15) and WR Jack Horan (11). DE Trevor Fennimore will become the 14th with a start against Lehigh. Against Sacred Heart in week four, OL P.J. Barr and TE Alex Twiford became the first freshmen to start for Bucknell. They have started every game since then, a string of five in a row. Fellow freshmen S Brandon Benson and DE Roger Mellado have started the past three tilts. To date, nine Bison have started every game: Butler, Fennimore, Horan, Marine, Pyles, Richard, OL Noah Stephenson, Watkins and OL Josh Yoder. Inside the 2017 Schedule Bucknell has the benefit of playing six of its 11 games at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium for the first time since Bucknell s 2017 opponents went a combined (.458) in Of that group, Colgate (5-5), Fordham (8-3) Lehigh (9-3) and Sacred Heart (6-5) finished at or above.500. Bucknell s five non-conference opponents hail from five different conferences: the Big South Conference (Monmouth), the Colonial Athletic Association (William & Mary), the Ivy League (Cornell), the Northeast Conference (Sacred Heart) and the Pioneer Football League (Marist). Bucknell entered the season with a (.383) record against its 2017 opponents, including winning marks against Marist (11-1) and Georgetown ( ) and an even record with Sacred Heart (1-1). Head coach Joe Susan entered 2017 with a (.431) record against the Bison s 2017 foes. Bucknell has not faced Monmouth (first meeting) and William & Mary (fifth meeting) during his tenure as head coach. It was the 11th Patriot League title for Mountain Hawks, and their first since Bucknell had two fourth-quarter possessions with a chance to tie the game with a touchdown. Those drives ended with an interception and a turnover on downs. The Bison had the ball for nearly 12 minutes in the fourth quarter. They put together a 17-play, 71-yard drive during the final period. R.J. Nitti went over 400 pass completions (410) in his career and became the third Bison player to throw for more than 5,000 yards (5,113) in a career. Joey DeFloria posted his fifth 100-yard rushing game of the season with 119 yards on 28 carries. Will Carter posted his third 100-yard receiving game of the season with 120 yards on four catches. Bucknell s defense held Lehigh to a season-low 20 points. The Mountain Hawks entered the game averaging 42.2 points and yards per game. Lehigh generated just 357 yards of total offense, its second-lowest figure of the season. Bucknell and Lehigh s defenses combined for eight sacks. Abdullah Anderson led all players with two. Bucknell Pushes No. 21/24 Lehigh but Falls, Playing its second-consecutive nationally ranked opponent, the Bucknell football team had a chance to prevent No. 21/24 Lehigh from clinching the Patriot League title on its home field at Goodman Stadium, but the first-place Mountain Hawks prevailed over the Bison by a score. Bucknell (3-6, 2-2 PL) had two potential game-tying drives in the fourth quarter but was unable to convert on either. Lehigh (8-2, 5-0 PL) still has one more game remaining in the regular season (Nov. 19 at Lafayette), but Saturday s win secured its 11th Patriot League title, and its first since The Mountain Hawks will be the Patriot League s representative in the NCAA FCS Playoffs. Bucknell was led on the offensive end by R.J. Nitti, who was 17-for 26 for 228 yards. Will Carter had four catches for 120 yards for his eighth career 100-yard outing while Joey DeFloria had 28 carries for 119 yards and a touchdown, marking his fifth 100-yard game this season. Mark Pyles led the Bison with seven tackles while Abdullah Anderson was all over the field with three tackles, including two sacks and a pair of pass breakups. Nick Shafnisky finished 18-for-37 for 264 yards and one touchdown for Lehigh, which won its eighth consecutive game. Troy Pelletier had a game-high eight receptions for 110 yards, while Dom Bragalone ran 17 times for 86 yards. The Bison opened the fourth quarter in the midst of a 17-play, 71-yard drive, putting Bucknell at the Lehigh four-yard line. The drive concluded with the Bison going for it on 4th-and-goal from inside the Mountain Hawks five-yard line with a chance to tie the score with a touchdown. Donavon Harris made a diving interception of a Nitti pass in the end zone, giving Lehigh the ball with just under six minutes to play. Troy Glenn recovered a Shafnisky fumble on Lehigh s next drive, giving Bucknell the ball again with 3:36 to play. The Bison converted a 3rd-and-2 from their own 40 with a 15-yard completion to Carter, but he was flagged for a personal foul, pushing Bucknell back 15 yards. Bucknell was unable to advance the ball anymore as it committed another penalty, allowed two Lehigh sacks and threw two pass incompletions, giving the ball back to the Mountain Hawks with just over a minute to play. After a first-down run by Bragalone, Lehigh ran three plays in the victory formation to clinch the league title. Bucknell opened the game by marching down the field and scoring on its first possession. The Bison defense stopped Lehigh on fourth down on the game s first drive and then the Bucknel offense put together a 10-play, 64-yard drive that concluded with a six-yard touchdown run by DeFloria. DeFloria ran for 35 yards on the drive, while Nitti was 3-for-3 for 29 yards. Lehigh tied the game up on its next possession, which was an 11-play, 87-yard drive the finished with a one-yard touchdown run by Shafnisky with 1:56 to play in the first quarter. After a Lehigh punt, the Bison did take the lead again on an 11-yard touchdown run by Chad Freshnock. It capped an eight-play, 80-yard drive that spanned more than four minutes. Lehigh took its first lead of the game late in the third quarter when Shafnisky connected with Gatlin Casey on a nine-yard touchdown in the back of the end zone. The score made it On the first play of the next drive, Pierce Ripanti pressured Nitti in the backfield, tipped a pass and intercepted it, giving the Mountain Hawks possession inside the Bison 20-yard line. Bucknell s defense held Lehigh to a 20-yard field goal by Ed Mish, keeping the Bison within one touchdown (20-13) heading into the final seconds of the third quarter. Bucknell finished with a edge in total offense. It was the highest figure for the Bison since they totaled 403 against VMI on Sept. 24, while it was a second-lowest total of the season for the Mountain Hawks, who entered the day ranked seventh nationally in total offense. The Bison won their seven-straight season opener and moved to 7-1 in their first game under head coach Joe Susan. Bucknell last scored 45 points in a game on Oct. 11, 2014, a victory at Lehigh. The Bison s margin of victory was their largest since Oct. 6, 2001, a win over Towson. WR Kyle Kinner and WR Steven Walier each caught his first touchdown pass. Walier s 45-yard touchdown score was also his first career reception. Before WR Jack Horan found TE Andrew Podbielski for a two-point conversion in the first quarter, Bucknell last passed for a two-point conversion on Oct. 17, 2015 at Army West Point (R.J. Nitti to Andrew Owers). CB Colin Jonov, who missed 2016 due to injury, returned an interception 64 yards for a score on Marist s first drive. It was his fifth career interception. Before DE Blake Fletcher recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown, the last Bison to return a fumble for a touchdown was Matt Johnson in a victory at VMI on Nov. 23, In their last four meetings with Marist, Bucknell has only allowed 16 points. The Bison blanked the Red Foxes in their 2014 (22-0) and 2015 (17-0) contests and won the 2016 meeting by a margin. Bucknell Football Routs Marist, 45-6, in Season Opener The Bucknell football team kicked off its 2017 campaign with a commanding 45-6 victory over Marist on a rainy night at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium in front of 3,024 fans. The Bison broke open the game early, scoring four touchdowns in the first quarter, including three in the final two minutes of the frame. Their performance on the field set the stage for a rousing post-game fireworks show. With 8:58 on the clock in the first quarter, Colin Jonov opened the scoring, picking off a Mike White pass and racing 64 yards down the Marist sideline for the score. After a bad snap on the extra point attempt, Jack Horan corralled the ball and found Andrew Podbielski in the right corner of the end zone to give Bucknell an 8-0 lead. The Bison scored three touchdowns in the final two minutes of the opening stanza to build a 28-0 advantage. First, after a 4:11 drive during which Bucknell went 3-for-3 in third-down conversions, Matt Muh connected with Kyle Kinner for an 11-yard score. On Marist s next possession, Nick Zarkoski sacked White deep in the Marist end. The ball came free, and Blake Fletcher pounced on it in the end zone to extend the Bison s lead to Steven Walier put an exclamation mark on the quarter by hauling in a 45-yard touchdown pass with no time left on the clock. Bucknell carried the momentum from its explosive opening stanza into the second quarter. After the Bison defense forced the Red Foxes to go three and out on their first drive, a penalty on the punt gave the offense the ball on the Marist 28. Bucknell took advantage, and Chad Freshnock capped the abbreviated drive with a three-yard touchdown rush. The Red Foxes thwarted the Bison s shutout bid 29 seconds before halftime after one of the longest drives of the game. Marcelleus Calhoun finished off the drive, which accounted for 97 of Marist s 119 first-half yards, with a four-yard score. As the rain picked up, both team s defenses took center stage. The teams combined for just 156 yards of total offense in the second half, 121 of which belonged to Bucknell. The third quarter s lone score, a 31-yard John Burdick field goal, came with just 51 seconds left on the clock. Freshnock completed the game s scoring at the 3:29 mark of the finale frame with his second touchdown rush of the game. Leading up to that play, Muh found a wide-open Podbielski for a 31-yard gain on a 3rd and 7 to set the Bison up on the Marist 15. Muh completed 16 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with seven different receivers. Podbielski led the Bison with a career-best 60 receiving yards while Joey DeFloria had the most catches with four. The Bison defense limited Marist to just 154 yards of total offense, including 24 on the ground. Mark Pyles led the way with eight tackles (five solo) while Ben Richard was close behind with seven (six solo). Eight different Bison had a tackle for a loss, with Abdullah Anderson, Fletcher and Pyles each recording two. Four Bison Fletcher, Simeon Page, Richard and Zarkoski had a sack. Alex Pechin helped tilt the field in Bucknell s favor, averaging 47.0 yards per punt. He dropped three inside the 20 and had two touchbacks. QB Matt Muh finished with 138 yards on 22-for-39 passing, connecting with eight different receivers. WR Jack Horan (48) and WR Alan Butler (36) each exceeded 30 receiving yards. During the contest, S Joe Lauro made his 100th career tackle while LB Ben Richard recorded his 100th career solo tackle. Lauro led the Bison defense with eight tackles (five solo) against the Crusaders. The Bison limited Holy Cross QB Peter Pujals, who threw for 358 yards and one touchdown against FBS foe UConn on Aug. 28, to 178 yards and no touchdowns. The Crusaders stretched their winning streak over the Bison in Lewisburg to four games. Bucknell last suffered a shutout on Sept. 28, 2013, a 16-0 loss to Sacred Heart. The Crusaders scored 13 of their 20 points off of turnovers. They recovered three fumbles and picked off one pass. Bucknell held a slim 30:48 to 29:12 advantage in time of possession. The Bison were bolstered by a 9:37 fourth quarter drive that covered 71 yards in 18 plays. This was the first time the Bison and Crusaders met in September. This was the second time the Bison had their Patriot League opener on Sept. 9, which is the second earliest date they have begun league action. Holy Cross Tops Bucknell Football in Patriot League Opener Holy Cross toppled the Bucknell football team, 20-0, in the Patriot League opener for both teams at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Diquan Walker rushed for 72 yards and two touchdowns while Peter Pujals, a two-time All-Patriot League selection, threw for 178 yards to lead the Crusaders (1-1) past the Bison (1-1). After recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff, Holy Cross started its first drive on the Bucknell 22. While the Crusaders took three penalties on that drive, which pushed them as far back as the Bison 32, Pujals connected with Richie DeNicola for a 30-yard gain that set up Walker for a two-yard touchdown rush. The Bison had a prime opportunity to even the score after Bryan Marine tipped a Pujals pass to Aaron Brown, setting up the offense on the Bucknell 45 with 10:27 on the clock. The Bison reached the Holy Cross 23 thanks to a pass interference penalty and a six-yard Jack Horan reception. But, on a 4th and 4, Matt Muh s pass to Horan fell just short. With 7:01 remaining in the first, Jack Kutschke forced a fumble, and Tyler Ahmad recovered it to give Holy Cross the ball on the Bucknell 44. The Bison defense came up big, forcing the Crusaders to settle for a 25-yard field goal. During that Holy Cross possession, Chanse Riley had a pair of tackles and a pass breakup. On Bucknell s first drive of the second quarter, Teddy Capsis sacked Muh deep in the Bison end, and the ball came loose. While Akeem Walcott recovered it on the 13-yard line, the Bucknell defense held fast to force Holy Cross to settle for a 31-yard field goal. The Bison s longest drive of the first half started at the 6:53 mark of the second quarter. On the second play, Chad Freshnock broke free for a 30-yard gain that advanced Bucknell to the Crusader 34. Freshnock later caught a seven-yard pass on a 4th and 7 to keep the drive alive, but the Bison couldn t get past the Holy Cross 24. John Burdick s 41-yard field goal attempt ultimately sailed wide left. At the midpoint of the third quarter, the Crusaders were threatening to extend their lead. In five plays, they went from their nine-yard line to Bucknell s 30. After Abdullah Anderson and Blake Fletcher teamed to sack Pujals for a loss of six yards, bringing up a 3rd and 11, a pass interference penalty gave Holy Cross a first down. But Jon Fox stepped in front of a Pujals pass on the next play to regain the ball for the Bison. Bucknell went three and out on the resulting drive, and the Crusaders took over on the Bison 35 after a 19-yard punt return by Alim Muhammad. Walker capped the abbreviated drive by rushing for his second touchdown, a two-yard score, at 1:48 of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Bison had the longest drive of the game, an 18-play, 71-yard drive that drained 9:37 off the clock. Muh opened that drive by connecting with Horan for a 14-yard gain and later found Kinner on back-to-back plays for 13 yards. At the Holy Cross 46, Bucknell faced a 4th and 2, but Andrew Podbielski caught a four-yard pass to keep the drive alive. Right after Podbielski s reception, Muh scrambled 16 yards for a first down. Five plays later, Joey DeFloria nearly found the end zone, but Ryan Brady tackled him a yard shy. Brady s shoestring tackle ended up being the reason the Crusaders earned their shutout since Oct. 24, 2015 against Lafayette. Holy Cross held strong on the goal line, stuffing two DeFloria rushing attempts short of the end zone and hurrying Muh into throwing an incomplete pass. On 4th and goal from the Crusader nine-yard line, Ahmad tipped Muh s pass out of Andrew Owers s reach. Zable Stadium in the first meeting between the teams since At halftime, the Bison (1-2) trailed by a single point, 10-9, but the Tribe (2-1) scored three unanswered touchdowns in the third quarter to open up their advantage. On the opening drive of the contest, the Bison marched to the Tribe 24. Early in the drive, Matt Muh connected with Andrew Podbielski for an 11-yard gain and Joey DeFloria scampered for 11 yards on back-to-back plays. But the Bison were ultimately forced to punt after a false start penalty turned a 3rd and 8 into a 3rd and 13 and Isaiah Stephens sacked Muh for a loss of five yards. The Tribe carried the momentum from that defensive stand into their first drive, covering 80 yards on eight plays to score the game s first touchdown. After Nate Evans broke free for a 34- yard rush to set up William & Mary on the Bucknell four-yard line, he capped the drive with a one-yard score. Early in the second quarter, the Tribe had a prime opportunity to go up by two touchdowns after Jalen Christian returned a punt 48 yards to the Bison 20. On the next play, Jaret Anderson nearly found the end zone, but Mark Pyles and Colin Jonov brought him down a single yard short. The Bucknell defense held fast, with Ben Richard stuffing Anderson short of the goal line and Jon Fox wrapping up Evans for a loss of two yards. After Tommy McKee s pass to Jalen Christian fell incomplete, William & Mary was forced to settle for a 20-yard field goal with 7:22 on the clock. The Bison got on the board on their next drive. On the first play, Muh found Podbielski for a 20-yard gain that brought Bucknell to midfield. While it appeared Nate Akins forced Podbielski to fumble the ball, which was picked up by Aaron Swinton and returned for a touchdown, Podbielski s knee was ruled to have been down after a review. Three passes later, the Bison were in the red zone. First, Muh found Alan Butler for a 13-yard gain; then, Jack Horan made a sliding catch for a 21-yard gain that advanced Bucknell to the Tribe 16. At the 5:24 mark, Muh found Podbielski in the corner of the end zone for an eight-yard score. Bill Murray blocked the extra point attempt to keep the score After the Bison defense forced William & Mary to go three and out on its next drive, three rushes by DeFloria, including one for 19 yards, brought the offense across midfield. Later, Kyle Kinner made a leaping catch for a 31-yard gain that brought Bucknell to the Tribe s five-yard line. John Burdick capped that drive with a 33-yard field goal after William & Mary stuffed two rushing attempts and a fumbled snap backed the Bison up to the Tribe 16. On William & Mary s second drive of the third quarter, McKee scrambled out of a collapsing pocket to avoid being sacked. He also drew a face mask penalty, which brought the Tribe from their 26 to their 47. McKee then connected with Daniel Kuzjak for a 29-yard gain that advanced William & Mary to the Bison 24. Three plays later, Noah Giles scampered 15 yards for a score. The Tribe extended their lead to 23-9 less than two minutes later after Nate Atkins forced a fumble, which was returned by Corey Parker 19 yards for a touchdown. William & Mary later brought the score to 30-9 after Tyler Crist capped an eight-play, 60-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown catch with 44 seconds remaining in the third quarter. It capped a perfect night for him, as he made both of his field-goal attempts and all four of his point-after bids to finish with a career-high 10 points. P Alex Pechin averaged a career-high 48.4 yards on nine attempts to round out a big night for the Bison kickers. QB John Chiarolanzio set career highs in passing yards (187), completions (21) and attempts (34) in his first 2017 start. He also matched his career-long rush with a 17-yard run that helped set up RB Chad Freshnock s fourth-quarter touchdown. In his first game as one of Bucknell s captains, RB Joey DeFloria rushed for a season-best 80 yards and two touchdowns. A trio of Bison reached the double figures in tackles: LB Ben Richard (15), LB Mark Pyles (12) and S Joe Lauro (10). Through the first three games, Bucknell s single-season high in tackles was eight. Richard also recovered a fumble while Lauro and S Aaron Brown picked off passes. Richard made his 200th career tackle during the game while Pechin recorded his 100th career punt. With the win, their second at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium in 2017, the Bison exceeded their home win total from 2016 and John Burdick s Last-Second Field Goal Lifts Bucknell Football to Win John Burdick booted a career-best 46-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Bucknell football team to a thrilling victory over Sacred Heart at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Joey DeFloria rushed for two touchdowns, Chad Freshnock added another, and John Chiarolanzio threw for 187 yards and a touchdown in his first start of the campaign to help the Bison improve to 2-2. Sacred Heart (2-2) rallied from 14 points down in the fourth quarter and tied the game at 31 apiece when Kevin Duke found Lawrence Nembhard for a 41-yard touchdown with 4:12 remaining in regulation. The Pioneers forced a Bison punt and advanced the ball near midfield, but Ben Richard and Nick Zarkoski teamed up to stuff Duke inches short of a first down on a 4th and 1, giving the Bison a chance to win it. A 24-yard pass from Chiarolanzio to Marcus Ademilola on 3rd-and-8 put the Bison into field goal range, but an incompletion, a one-yard loss and a holding penalty pushed them back to the Sacred Heart 35. Then, Matt Muh, in at quarterback after Chiarolanzio was shaken up, hit Jack Horan for a six-yard gain to the 29 with two seconds remaining. After the Pioneers called two timeouts to ice the kicker, Burdick drilled the 46-yard field goal and sprinted to the opposite end zone in celebration while the bench emptied in pursuit. At the end of the first quarter, Bucknell held a 14-0 advantage. The Bison opened the scoring with 10:45 on the clock when Chiarolanzio found a wide-open Horan for a 38-yard touchdown. Less than two minutes later, after Trevor Fennimore forced a fumble and Ben Richard recovered it at the Sacred Heart 16, DeFloria capped the abbreviated drive with a 12-yard touchdown run. Early in the second quarter, the Bison extended their lead to 17-0 on a 30-yard Burdick field goal. The Pioneers got on the board with 1:38 left in the frame, with Josh Freiria capping a 12-play, 73-yard drive with a 34-yard field goal. Just when it looked like Bucknell would carry a two-touchdown lead into the locker room, Kevin Barry picked off a Chiarolanzio pass and raced 60 yards for a score with just 58 seconds on the clock. The Pioneers carried the momentum from Barry s pick six into the third quarter, with Ezekiel Ennis returning the opening kickoff 98 yards for a score that tied the game at 17 apiece. On Sacred Heart s next drive, Aaron Brown intercepted a Duke pass and returned it 19 yards to the Pioneer 13. The Bison took advantage; DeFloria again did the honors, rushing three yards for a score. After the teams traded three and outs, Bucknell took over with 4:39 remaining in the third quarter. Chiarolanzio appeared to hit Alex Twiford for a 48-yard touchdown, but an illegal block in the back penalty brought the ball back to the Sacred Heart 40. The Bison then marched to the red zone, with Chiarolanzio breaking free for a 17-yard gain that brought them to the three-yard line just as time expired in the quarter. Freshnock ultimately punched the ball into the end zone from one yard out 41 seconds into the final fame, giving the Bison a lead. The Pioneers cut Bucknell s edge to a touchdown on their next drive, covering 79 yards in six plays. After Duke found Byron Barney for a 47-yard gain, Eli Terry scampered 11-yards for a score that made it a game. His 76-yard pass was 34 yards longer than his previous career long, set against Colgate in WR Jack Horan led the Bison with a career-best 95 yards. His 76-yard reception was five more than his previous career long, set on an 71-yard touchdown catch against Marist on Sept. 3, S Brandon Benson led the Bison with a career-best 15 tackles (six solo), matching the team season-high set by LB Ben Richard against Sacred Heart. The freshman also posted Bucknell s lone sack, forcing a fumble in the process. Benson s sack broke a streak of two games without one. RB Marquis Carter became the first freshman to find the end zone when he rushed for a three-yard score in the fourth quarter. Entering this game, Bucknell hadn t allowed 200 rushing yards in The Bison held Marist (24), Holy Cross (134), William & Mary (176) and Sacred Heart (95) all under 200. At halftime, Monmouth led Bucknell in total offense, The Hawks recorded 170 yards on the ground through two quarters, just six shy of the highest total the Bison had allowed in DB Mike Basile became Monmouth s all-time leader in career tackles during the game. The STATS Preseason First Team All-American paced the Hawks with seven tackles. Monmouth Tops Bucknell Football in First Meeting Monmouth toppled the Bucknell football team, 35-13, in the first meeting between the teams at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Four different Hawks rushed for touchdowns, and Erik Zokouri enjoyed his first career 100- yard rushing game, to help Monmouth move to 4-1 on the season. With the loss, Bucknell will enter its bye week 2-3. Monmouth took a 7-0 lead on its first drive, which was highlighted by a 46-yard catch by Jake Powell that advanced the Hawks to the Bison 15. Pete Guerriero capped the six-play, 79-yard drive by punching his way into the end zone from six yards out. In the first quarter, Bucknell s best opportunity to get on the board came after John Chiarolanzio found a wide-open Jack Horan in the middle of the field for a 76-yard gain. That play, the first of the Bison s drive, took them from their nine-yard line to the Hawks 15. But the Monmouth defense held fast, recording two tackles for a combined loss of six yards to push Bucknell back to the Hawk 21. While Chiarolanzio found Joey DeFloria for a seven-yard gain, the Bison came up nine yards short of a first down and opted to attempt a 31-yard field goal. But a bad snap forced John Burdick to attempt a pass, which was intercepted by Teddy Martinez. Just six seconds into the second quarter, the Hawks extended their lead to Reggie White Jr. s three-yard touchdown reception completed a nine-play, 86-yard drive that began at the 3:58 mark of the first quarter after Bucknell s failed field goal. During that drive, Zokouri had a 23-yard run and Kenji Bahar completed an 11-yard pass to White Jr., a 19-yard pass to Powell and a 20- yard pass to Zokouri. The Bison got on the board at the 10:05 mark of the second quarter. After Bryan Marine jumped in front of a Bahar screen pass and returned it 10 yards to the Monmouth four-yard line, Chiarolanzio found Marcus Ademilola for a three-yard touchdown. The Hawks responded with a touchdown on their next drive. After Zokuri ran the ball fourstraight times for a combined 34 yards, Vinny Grasso broke free for a 39-yard touchdown run with 8:13 on the clock. Bucknell had an opportunity to trim Monmouth s advantage after Brice Sydnor forced a fumble and Joe Lauro recovered it on the Bison 29 with 2:56 left in the half. On the first play of that drive, DeFloria scampered for an 18-yard gain to the Bucknell 47. Two plays later, Alex Twiford hauled in a 16-yard pass that advanced the Bison to the Hawk 33. But they were ultimately forced to punt after Sam Pierce sacked Chiarolanzio for a loss of six yards and Dejaun Cooper tied up Chad Freshnock for a three-yard loss. The Hawks controlled the third quarter, holding the Bison to just 15 yards of offense and scoring two touchdowns to build a 35-6 advantage. First, Devell Jones capped a 10-play, 59-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown rush at the 8:17 mark. Then, with 2:19 to play in the quarter, Bahar scored on a one-yard quarterback keeper to complete a nine-play, 38-yard drive. Marquis Carter completed the game s scoring, rushing three yards for his first career touchdown with 11:26 left to play in the game. The Hawks totaled 463 yards of total offense, 289 on the ground and 171 through the air. The Bison finished with 251 yards of total offense, 204 of which were through the air. The first was Steve Barimo in a victory over Lafayette on Nov. 4, Six different Bison receivers reached the double digits in yards, with four doing so on only one catch. RB Joey DeFloria rushed for a season-best 99 rushing yards. LB Ben Richard led the Bison with 11 tackles. S Brandon Benson was next with nine while S Aaron Brown, LB Simeon Page, CB Bryan Marine and DE Roger Mellado each had eight. Page (2) and Mellado also came up with critical sacks during the contest. This was the second-straight game QB John Chiarolanzio completed a pass of at least 50 yards to WR Jack Horan. Against Monmouth on Sept. 30, Chiarolanzio found Horan for a 76-yard gain in the first quarter. P Alex Pechin played a key role in the win, dropping all four of his punts inside the 20. On average, Cornell started its drives on its own 20 while Bucknell began on its own 40. Before TE Jared Morse, the last Bison to block a punt was S Connor Golden. He accomplished the feat on Oct. 4, 2014 at Bryant. The only other time the Bison won two-straight games against Cornell at Schoellkopf Field was when they won three in a row in 1987 (20-6), 1990 (42-21) and 1995 (10-7). Bucknell won the 2015 meeting by a margin. Bucknell Football Downs Cornell, After Cornell evened the score on its first drive of the second half, the Bucknell football team scored 16 unanswered points en route to a victory at Schoellkopf Field. John Chiarolanzio completed 11 of 16 passes for 176 yards and a career-high two touchdowns, John Burdick kicked a school-record four field goals and Ben Richard led a stifling defense with 11 tackles help the Bison (3-3, 0-1 Patriot League) take two in a row from the Big Red (1-4, 1-1 Ivy League) in Ithaca, N.Y. for the second time in program history. On its first drive of the second half, Cornell covered 65 yards in six plays, highlighted by a 25- yard reception by Dalton Banks and S.K. Howard s 14-yard rush. Davy Lizana capped the scoring drive with a nine-yard touchdown reception, making it a game. Omar Garcia helped swing the momentum back in Bucknell s favor, returning the resulting kickoff 49 yards up the Bison sideline to the Big Red 46. Burdick ultimately finished off that drive with a 38-yard field goal. After Jared Morse blocked a punt, Bucknell started its next drive on the Cornell 24. Burdick completed that abbreviated drive by splitting the uprights from 33 yards out. Alan Butler put an exclamation mark on Bucknell s strong third quarter, making a diving catch in the corner of the end zone for a 22-yard score. Butler s touchdown, his first of the season, completed an eight-play, 80-yard drive. During that scoring drive, Chiarolanzio found Andrew Podbielski for a 31-yard gain and Marcus Ademilola for a 14-yard gain. Chad Freshnock also had a 14-yard run. At 3:16 of the fourth quarter, the Bison extended their lead to on a 28-yard Burdick field goal. On four carries during that drive, Joey DeFloria accounted for 52 of the Bison s 60 yards. While Owen Peters caught a four-yard touchdown pass with 39 seconds left on the clock, and Banks found Jack Gellatly for the two-point conversion, Jack Horan recovered the on-side kick to seal the win for the Bison. The Bison opened the scoring on the second play of their second drive when Chiarolanzio connected with Horan for a 64-yard touchdown. Chiarolanzio hit Horan in stride at midfield, and two Big Red defensive backs clipped each other, allowing Horan to scamper to the end zone uncontested. Bucknell outgained Cornell in the first quarter, The teams combined for just six first downs, four of which belonged to the Bison. At the 10:43 mark of the second quarter, Gerrit Van Itallie downed a punt on the Cornell oneyard line. After Josh Sweet scampered for eight- and 10-yard gains on back-to-back plays, the Big Red appeared to be on the move. But Bryan Marine forced Sweet to cough up the ball on his next carry, and John Hunt recovered it to set the Bison up on the Cornell 24. CB Colin Jonov s interception return for a touchdown was the sixth-longest touchdown in program history. Bucknell s longest pick 6, it is one of only six scoring plays of at least 95 yards. The other five were all kickoff returns. Of Bucknell s 17 scoring plays of at least 90 yards, 12 were kickoff returns, three were runs from the line of scrimmage and two were interception returns. Joe Glenn owned the previous school record for longest interception return for a touchdown, a 90-yard score in a win over Delaware State in Jonov s interception return was later featured on ESPN s College Football Live. Bucknell last went to overtime on Sept. 24, VMI won that game, which went to triple overtime, The Bison last won an overtime game on Oct. 3, 2015 at VMI, a victory. S Drew Newcomb s pick 6 was his first career interception. It was Bucknell s second interception return for a touchdown in 2017; in the season opener against Marist, Jonov had a 64-yard pick 6. Both Jonov and Newcomb s interceptions opened the scoring. P Alex Pechin had another strong game, averaging 42.6 yards per punt. He dropped two punts inside of the 20 and also posted a 55-yard punt. DE Trevor Fennimore s first-quarter sack, which was for a loss of 13 yards, was the first of his collegiate career. Jonov s 95-Yard Pick Six Lifts Bucknell Football to 13-7 Overtime Victory Colin Jonov returned an interception 95 yards for a touchdown in overtime to lift the Bucknell football team to a 13-7 victory over Lafayette at Fisher Stadium. It s an indescribable feeling, Jonov said. Initially, I saw a cutback, and I took it. And then, after I saw and took the cutback, I saw nothing but green. I was just thinking, Do not go down no matter what. Just stay on your feet and score. And that s what happened. The game was a defensive struggle, with the Bison and Leopards combining for 394 yards of total offense and 22 first downs. With its victory, its 600th in program history, Bucknell improved to 4-3 (1-1 Patriot League) on the season. The Bison jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the 12:56 mark of the first quarter. With Lafayette (2-5, 2-1 Patriot League) facing a 3rd and 8 on its 32-yard line, Drew Newcomb stepped in front of Sean O Malley s pass to the out-route receiver and raced 31 yards down the Bucknell sideline for a touchdown. The Bison defense was the story of the first quarter. While the Leopards held an 11:07 to 3:53 advantage in time of possession, Bucknell limited them to just 64 yards of total offense, 57 of which came through the air. Neither team could get into a rhythm offensively in the second quarter. Lafayette s best chance to even the score came with 9:07 on the clock after Demetrius Breedlove s strip sack gave its offense the ball on Bucknell s 39. But the Bison defense forced the Leopards to go three and out; during that sequence, Simeon Page tied up Dylan Wadsworth for no gain and an aggressive blitz hurried O Malley into throwing back-to-back incompletions. On its first drive of the second half, Lafayette covered 60 yards in eight plays to score the equalizing touchdown. Highlights of that drive included lengthy rushes by C.J. Amill (24 yards to the Bucknell 29) and Selwyn Simpson (19 yards to the Bucknell 7). Simpson ultimately capped the drive with a two-yard touchdown rush, the first of his career. With 9:39 remaining in regulation, the Bison took over on their six-yard line after a 49-yard punt. John Chiarolanzio orchestrated a 17-play, 69-yard drive, highlighted by his 13-yard pass to Marquis Carter while under pressure on a 3rd and 8. That play brought Bucknell into field-goal range, at the Lafayette 25, but John Burdick ultimately missed his 42-yard field goal attempt with 1:19 left to play. After the teams traded three and outs, they went into bonus time. The Bison won the toss and elected to start on defense. On the first play of the Leopards possession, Jonov leaped to pick off O Malley s pass and raced 95 yards for the game-winning score. Bucknell led Lafayette in total offense ( ). Chiarolanzio completed 14 of 25 passes for 129 yards. Jack Horan led the Bison with 43 receiving yards while Chad Freshnock paced the team on the ground with 50 rushing yards. Bryan Marine led Bucknell with nine tackles (eight solo) while Mark Pyles was next with eight (six solo). Page and Trevor Fennimore each posted a sack. With its victory, Bucknell stretched its winning streak over Lafayette to four games. The Bison have previously enjoyed four winning streaks against the Leopards of equal or greater length: from 1929 to 1945 (6), 1968 to 1972 (5) and 1949 to 1952 (4). QB John Chiarolanzio completed five of 10 passes for 37 yards during the first half. WR Justin Bethea (48) and WR Mike Balzofiore (41) led the Bison in receiving yards, both setting a new career high in the process. Balzofiore s first career reception, a 29-yard catch, was the longest by a Bison during the contest. Defensively, a pair of freshmen reached the double digits in tackles: S Brandon Benson (12) and LB Simeon Page (11). S Joe Lauro s extra-point block was the first of his career. DL Abdullah Anderson also blocked an extra point; it was the fourth blocked kick of his career (his first three were field goals). Bucknell last blocked multiple kicks in the same game on Nov. 19, 2016 when Anderson blocked a pair of field goals in a loss to Fordham. Bucknell last allowed 40 points in a game on Oct. 29, 2016, a loss at then No. 9 Charleston Southern. Colgate went 6-for-6 on its red-zone chances, scoring six touchdowns. Bucknell went 1-for-4 in the red zone, with the Raiders holding the Bison on a 4th and 8 and recovering a fumble inside their 10-yard line. Colgate QB Grant Breneman completed 13 of 18 passes for 177 yards and three touchdowns. He added 76 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Bucknell Football Falls at Colgate The Bucknell football team fell to Colgate, 40-3, at Andy Kerr Stadium. The Raiders (5-4, 3-1 Patriot League) used an explosive second quarter to down the Bison (4-4, 1-2 Patriot League), snapping their two-game winning streak in the process. At the end of the first quarter, Colgate held a slim 6-3 edge. The Raiders opened the scoring on their first drive of the game when James Holland finished off a seven-play, 75-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown run. During that drive, Holland rushed for 38 yards on four carries while Grant Breneman completed a 38-yard pass to Thomas Ives. Joe Lauro blocked the point-after attempt to keep it a 6-0 game. The Bison got on the board with 3:42 on the clock in the first quarter. After a short punt, Bucknell took over on the 50-yard line. On back-to-back plays, John Chiarolanzio completed a pass of at least 10 yards, first finding Omar Garcia for a 13-yard gain and then connecting with Andrew Podbielski for an 11-yard gain. While the Bison advanced as far as Colgate s eight-yard line, they ultimately were forced to settle for a 28-yard John Burdick field goal. The Raiders broke open the game in the second quarter, scoring four unanswered touchdowns to build a 33-3 halftime lead. At the 13:45 mark, Ives hauled in a 12-yard pass from Breneman to cap a 10-play, 75-yard drive that began with 3:42 left to play in the first quarter. On the first play of Bucknell s next drive, Nick Ioanilli made a leaping play to pick off a pass at the Bison 40. Colgate took advantage of having a short field, with Breneman scrambling out of the pocket and finding Ives in the corner of the end zone for a 20-yard score three plays later. The Raiders extended their lead to 26-3 at the 6:01 mark after Breneman dove just inside the right pylon to score a six-yard touchdown. His quarterback keeper completed an eight-play, 61-yard drive. With 1:44 left to play in the half, the Bison took over on their own 43 after a short punt. But Ioanilli intercepted his second pass of the game to give Colgate the ball at the Bucknell 41. The Raiders again capitalized, with Breneman finding Nick Diaco for a five-yard score after a pass interference penalty took them from the 20-yard line to the five. In the first half, Colgate outgained Bucknell, , and held a 15-4 advantage in first downs. The tables turned in the second half, with the Bison holding edges in yards (169-93) and first downs (10-4). Bucknell s best opportunity to cut into Colgate s lead came at the 6:17 mark of the third quarter after Mark Pyles deflected a Breneman pass and Abdullah Anderson made an athletic play to come up with the ball on Colgate s 12-yard line. Matt Muh connected with Marquis Carter on the first play, and Tyler Castillo pushed him out of bounds one yard shy of the end zone. A play later, John Steffen recovered a fumble on the Raider seven-yard line to keep the Bison from getting on the board again. Alex Mathews completed the game s scoring with 1:41 remaining in regulation with a threeyard touchdown run.after Mathew s score, Bucknell advanced to Colgate s five-yard line, with Muh orchestrating a 13-play, 65-yard drive.
