Iowa is coming off a 13-3 defensive victory over the visiting Cyclones. This is a game that Iowa should own the line of scrimmage in. The Panthers started Eli Dunne at Montana and he was benched in favor of Colton Howell. Coach Farley is yet to name a starter this week. Iowa needs to get the passing game in a rhythm prior to the arrival of Wisconsin next Saturday night. It would be nice to see Easley get involved early and Smith to build off of his key 4th quarter catch that led to a Meki Sargent two-yard TD run to ice the game. The Hawkeye defense should stuff the Panther running game right from the jump. 2 This Week in BIG 10 Action RUTGERS KANSAS (1-1): Wow, these two slugs are locking horns early. The Jayhawks fresh off ending their (46) game losing streak at Central Michigan await a Rutgers team that got thumped in Columbus 52-3 and lost starting QB Artur Sitkowski to injury. Well, the proverbial.. something has to give here quote is poetic here. Put a clothespin on your nose and enjoy the Jayhawk rare 2 game win streak. JAYHAWKS 24 SCARLET KNIGHTS 17 BALL ST INDIANA (2-0): The Hoosiers had a solid win over Virginia at home Saturday night. Meanwhile, the Cardinals gave the Fighting Irish a tussle in South Bend losing The Hoosiers have to capitalize on winning this week with Michigan State in town next week to open Big Ten play. It won t be easy but the Hoosiers deliver. HOOSIERS 24 BALL ST 13 TEMPLE MARYLAND (2-0): The Terps are playing good football right now even with all the dysfunction inside the football staff. The Owls are not playing good football and are not very good at it right now. The turtles can score and give teams trouble with rotating QB s Kasim Hill and Tyrrell Pigrome. The snapping turtles move to 3-0 and host Minnesota next Saturday. TERPS 30 OWLS 13 TROY NEBRASKA (0-1): The Buffaloes scored with 1:06 remaining in the 4th quarter Saturday to close out the Huskers Electric true freshman QB Adrian Martinez 15/20 passing for (187) yards and (117) yards rushing injured a knee in the 4th quarter and did not return. Martinez is now listed as day to day. Andrew Bunch will likely start this Saturday. I give the Huskers the edge with a defense that showed a disruptive attack with (7) sacks. The visitors will hang around. HUSKERS 27 TROJANS 13 KENT ST #11 PENN ST (2-0): The Nittany Lions rolled in the second half in crushing Pittsburgh PSU took advantage of (3) Panther turnovers and put up (37) points in the second half. Kent State who lost at Illinois will be a tune-up prior to Big Ten play opening up next week. The Nittany Lions looked more settled this week coming off an overtime dog fight with Appalachian State. NITTANY LIONS 41 KENT ST 10 BYU #6 WISCONSIN (2-0): The Badgers hammered the Lobos with (417) rushing yards. Jonathan Taylor had (253) punishing yards of his own. The Cougars lost a tough one at Cal and committed (2) key turnovers. The Bears rushed for (172) yards. The Badgers will approach (350) on the ground this week but I am still not sold on the Badger passing game, it will catch up with them at some point but it won t be this week. BADGERS 40 COUGARS 13 SMU #19 MICHIGAN (1-1): The 0-2 Mustangs got shelled by TCU this past Thursday The ponies will not put up much of a fight in Ann Arbor as the wrecking ball Wolverine defense will tee off. The Wolverines looked competent offensively against directional Western Michigan in a 49-3 beat down which saw the Broncos gain only (208) yards of offense. QB Shea Patterson was efficient and RB Karan Higdon toted the pigskin for (156) yards. The Wolverines led 35-0 at the half. Look for similar results this week. WOLVERINES 41 MUSTANGS 10 MIAMI OH MINNESOTA (2-0): The Gophers got a key win over Fresno State at home but it came at a price as star RB Rodney Smith is now lost for the season with a knee injury. The Redhawks come into the game off a home loss to Cincinnati The Redhawks have allowed (56) points thru two games. After PJ Fleck s defense shut down the high powered Bulldog attack in a defensive chess match last week this will be a game of checkers. GOPHERS 30 REDHAWKS 10 S.FLORIDA (2-0) VS ILLINOIS (2-0): The Illini got punched pretty good last year in Tampa. The Bulls just hung 49 points on Georgia Tech. This game is being played at Soldier Field. Lovie s old stomping grounds. This is not a good matchup for the Illini. The Bulls passed for (202) and rushed for (224) against the Yellow Jackets. This same balance will do in the Illini early as their 2-0 start begins unraveling this week. BULLS 40 ILLINI 17 MISSOURI PURDUE (0-2): I admit it, I bought into the Boilermaker resurgence. Coach Brohm s rotating QB system is starting to haunt him. EMU QB Tyler Wiegers (Iowa transfer) just dropped (312) passing yards on the Boiler secondary in a steady downpour. Any ideas what will happen when Missouri QB Drew Lock comes to town this Saturday? Lock passed for (398) yards and (4) touchdowns against Wyoming last Saturday. The Boiler hype train is officially off the tracks. TIGERS 45 BOILERMAKERS 20 NORTHERN IOWA IOWA (2-0): The Hawkeyes defense overwhelmed the Cyclone offensive attack by completely taking RB David Montgomery out of the game plan. Montgomery rushed for only (44) yards on his (17) attempts. With the Wisconsin Badgers visiting next Saturday night, Iowa really needs to get the passing game sorted out. It would be nice if the Hawks can have some success through the air Saturday prior to the arrival of Bucky Badger. This is a game you want to win but also come out healthy from and game ready for the Badgers. HAWKEYES 38 PANTHERS 6 AKRON NORTHWESTERN(1-1): The Wildcats took a quick 7-0 lead over Duke at home and promptly did not score again. In the last six quarters the Wildcats have scored (1) touchdown including being shut out in the second half at Purdue. The Wildcats need to win this week against the Zips. The Cats have a week off and then play host to Michigan and trip up to East Lansing to face Sparty the following week. WILDCATS 27 ZIPS 10 #4 OHIO ST (2-0) VS #15 TCU (2-0): This meeting takes place in Arlington at Jerry s world. This qualifies as one the better games of the weekend. While Urban Meyer has been home breaking down game tape, the Buckeyes have been putting teams without a pulse away quickly. TCU will provide resistance but after watching the Frogs play SMU I am convinced they won t be able to block the Buckeyes defensive front. The Buckeyes will be too much to handle in the trenches. Meyer will get his parking pass and parking spot back on Monday in front of the Buckeye football offices. National Pillow Fight Game of the Week vs Ok, I have to fess up I had Kansas losing at Central Michigan and they turned the tables on me big time crushing the Chips 31-7 in a game that was not close. The Jayhawks took the pillow to me. In winning, the Jayhawks broke a 46-game road losing streak (11 years) that s how bad these guys are. Rutgers got punched right in the nose in Columbus and headed to halftime dazed and trailing 35-0 in their eventual annual Buckeye beat down If you are keeping score at home the Scarlet Knights lost to OSU 56-0 in 2017 so its the last two seasons. Rutgers starting QB Sitkowski was knocked out and is questionable this Saturday. There are plenty of good seats available for this one. Hey man, don t mess with a streak! 5 GARY RIMA- VOICE OF THE PANTHERS Q. What are your thoughts after four quarters of football and a scheduling quirk with a bye week last Saturday? A. I thought our kids battled back at Montana but we dug ourselves a hole early trailing 26-0 at the half. The bye week was originally supposed to come following the Iowa game on the 22nd but due to some other team bye weeks and a Thursday game scheduled our options became limited was my understanding how things fell. It was strange not playing last week Q. I am sure playing at Iowa is a big deal to many kids on the Panther roster. In your time covering Panther athletics what does that chance mean to native Iowan s? A. It has been my observation that you will get kids that felt they could play at Iowa that now get their chance to prove it. Our players relish a chance to be on the big stage against a very good Hawkeye football team. I know our kids are focused and have been invested in the game plan being put together by the coaching staff. It is just a great opportunity Q. What do you attribute to Coach Farley s success at U.N.I.? A. I feel the continuity he has been able to retain with a majority of his staff has led to the success. People forget Scott Frost was here on this staff as a Co-Defensive Coordinator before leaving for Oregon and then eventually to UCF. We have a good list of NFL alumni and I feel the coaching staff is always a great group of teachers when it comes to the fundamentals Q. You have been fortunate to cover a lot of Panther games in your career. Do you have a favorite road trip or venue? A. I enjoy a lot of the Division one stops we have made. Iowa City, Madison, BYU. My favorite is playing at North Dakota State. The people there are very welcoming and that dome holds under 20,000 but when they get rolling it feels like the top is going to pop right off that place. I really like the Big Ten atmosphere s I have been able to take in Q. In your opinion what has to happen for the Panthers to turn this into a four quarter game and have a shot to win? A. This is a tremendous challenge Coach Farley was extremely complimentary of Iowa s defensive front and they are for real. Somehow offensively we are going to have to run the ball a little bit to open up some space to throw the ball. I know Coach has not named a starter at QB but I feel it will be Eli Dunne who has the stronger arm and is more of a pocket passer.
