4 GAME 7 MATCHUP: BOSTON COLLEGE (15 games) NOLES HEAD TO MASSACHUSETTS FOR FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHT WITH BC Florida State travels to Boston College for a Friday night showdown against the Eagles. The Seminoles have won seven straight against the Eagles, all coming under head coach Jimbo Fisher. Fisher's seven wins (7-0) against the Eagles are his most against any opponent, tied with Miami (7-1) and Wake Forest (7-1). LAST TIME VS. THE EAGLES FSU beat Boston College 45-7 last year in Tallahassee, moving Fisher to 7-0 vs. the Eagles as HC. The win was FSU's largest against an ACC opponent since a 40-point win against Wake Forest in Deondre Francois (3) and Sean Maguire (2) combined for five touchdown passes. FSU's defense held BC scoreless for the first 56 minutes of the game and the Eagles did not record a first down in the second and third quarters. Boston College's 50 passing yards were the fewest passing yards FSU allowed against an ACC opponent since Georgia Tech had 45 in LAST TIME AT ALUMNI STADIUM FSU shut out Boston College 14-0 in 2015, the Seminoles' second road shutout of an ACC opponent (North Carolina, 37-0, 2003). Jalen Ramsey returned a fumble 36 yards for a touchdown, the last defensive score for FSU before last week's 34-yard fumble return for a TD by Matthew Thomas. FSU IN FRIDAY GAMES FSU and Boston College will play on Friday night for a third consecutive season. All-time, FSU is on Friday nights, including a 2-0 record in 2016: 45-7 vs. Boston College and vs. Michigan in the Orange Bowl. In regular season games, FSU is on Friday nights. Prior to 2015 against BC, FSU's last Friday night regular season game was at Miami in 2004, which was rescheduled due to hurricanes in southern Florida. In Friday bowl games, FSU is 8-0, with wins in the 1977 Tangerine, 1983 Peach, 1988 Fiesta, 1990 Blockbuster, 1993 Orange, 2010 Gator, 2010 Chick-fil-A and 2016 Orange Bowls. 6» FSU is 6-0 under head coach Jimbo Fisher as an unranked team on the road. 5 NCAA & ACC RANKS GAME NOTES: OFFENSE Team Rankings (out of 129) BIG-PLAY TATE STILL MAKING NOISE Junior receiver Auden Tate saw his streak of consecutive games with a touchdown reception snapped at five against Louisville, one shy of a share of the Florida State record. Most encouragingly, however, he led the Noles with five receptions (62 yards) which was his most productive outing since suffering a shoulder injury against NC State on Sept. 23. Tate still leads the team in receptions (23), receiving yards (374) and TD receptions (5). The Irmo, S.C. native is FSU s active career leader for receptions (49), receiving yards (783) and TD receptions (11). He is averaging one TD every 4.45 receptions and 16.0 yards per reception, despite averaging just 1.9 receptions per game for his career. In terms of touchdown-to-reception productivity, Tate s 1:4.45 ratio is ahead of FSU s top 10 career TD reception leaders. Player TD:Rec Avg. Player TD:Rec Avg. Barry Smith 25: E.G. The Clinton, Miss. native leads the Seminoles in rushing with 454 yards and is rapidly approaching a spot among FSU s top five true freshmen for rushing yardage. Sharing the load with productive starter Jacques Patrick (434 yds.), Akers led the Noles in rushing for a third consecutive game with 75 yards on 16 carries against Louisville. That followed back-to-back 100-yard games against Duke (115) and Miami (121), becoming just the fifth FSU true freshman to record consecutive 100-yard games. Dalvin Cook did it in three consecutive games in Akers ranks seventh nationally among true freshmen in rushing yardage. Akers trails Boston College's AJ Dillon (694) among ACC freshmen, but Akers has a yards per carry advantage. FSU True Freshman Rushing Leaders Player Year Rushes Yards YPC TD Dalvin Cook Greg Allen Travis Minor Larry Key Devonta Freeman Cam Akers Points scored in the fourth quarter by the Seminoles this season, their most productive 56» quarter. BLACKMAN AT BEST IN FOURTH QUARTER True freshman quarterback James Blackman is developing a reputation for rising up to play his best football in the fourth quarter. He directed the Noles back from a two touchdown deficit against Louisville, capped by his 20-yard, game-tying touchdown pass to Nyqwan Murray with 8:58 to play. The proof of Blackman s fourth quarter success is in the numbers. He is 26-of-45 for 385 yards and four touchdowns in the final quarter of his first five starts, and has not thrown an interception. His four fourth quarter TD passes tie him for 12th in Division I and lead all freshmen quarterbacks. Blackman is one of only 10 quarterbacks with four touchdowns and no interceptions in the fourth quarter this season. His 14 completions of 15 or more yards rank seventh nationally and his passing yards and QBR in the fourth quarter sit 26th nationally. GROUND GAME GROWING BEHIND TANDEM Though the Noles were unable to improve on their season-best rushing total for a fifth consecutive week against Louisville, they did average better than four yards per carry for the fourth straight game. FSU has already faced three rushing defenses ranked among the top 10 nationally (Alabama, NC State, Duke). 6 Through Week 8 Category NCAA ACC Value 3rd Down Conversion Pct rd Down Conversion Pct Defense th Down Conversion Pct th Down Conversion Pct Defense Blocked Kicks Blocked Kicks Allowed Blocked Punts Blocked Punts Allowed Completion Percentage Defensive TDs Fewest Penalties Fewest Penalties Per Game Fewest Penalty Yards Fewest Penalty Yards Per Game First Downs Defense First Downs Offense Fumbles Lost Fumbles Recovered Kickoff Return Defense Kickoff Returns Net Punting Passes Had Intercepted Passes Intercepted Passing Offense Passing Yards Allowed Passing Yards per Completion Punt Return Defense Punt Returns Red Zone Defense Red Zone Offense Rushing Defense Rushing Offense Sacks Allowed Scoring Defense Scoring Offense Tackles for Loss Allowed Team Passing Efficiency Team Passing Efficiency Defense Team Sacks Team Tackles for Loss Time of Possession :54 Total Defense Total Offense Turnover Margin Turnovers Gained Turnovers Lost Winning Percentage Player Rankings Through Week 8 - Top 50 Nationally Category Name NCAA/ACC Value Blocked Kicks Brian Burns, DE 1/1 2 Completion % James Blackman, QB 49/7.618 Field Goal % Ricky Aguayo, K 41/5.786 Field Goals PG Ricky Aguayo, K 13/ Passing Yards per Comp. 6 NATIONAL HONORS GAME NOTES: DEFENSE Ricky Aguayo, K Groza Watch List ROAD WARRIORS Florida State is 2-0 this season in true road games, owning wins at Wake Forest (26-19) and Duke (17-10). FSU s defense has been the catalyst in its two road victories, holding its two opponents to an average of 3.5 yards per carry and just rush yards per game. The Seminoles have held opponents to just 9-of-27 (33.3 percent) on third-down conversions in their two road games. Getting the opposition off the field has been key in FSU s 35:42-24:18 time of possession advantage on the road. Redshirt senior linebacker Matthew Thomas has been FSU s top performer in its two road games, combining for a team-best 15 tackles while adding three TFLs (-31 yards) and two sacks. 28» A span of 28 games had passed between defensive touchdowns for Florida State after Matthew Thomas 34-yard scoop and score vs. Louisville last week. It was FSU s first defensive score since Jalen Ramsey returned a fumble 36 yards for a TD at Boston College on Sept. 18, SWEAT THERAPY Junior Josh Sweat has emerged as FSU s most consistent edge rusher this season, leading the Seminoles in sacks (3.5) and tackles for loss (7.5). Saturday vs. Louisville, the Chesapeake, Va., native registered a career-high nine tackles while adding two TFLs and one sack. In FSU s previous game at Duke on Oct. 14, Sweat came up with one of the biggest plays of the game. He sacked Duke QB Daniel Jones on the game s final drive at the Duke 36, allowing nearly 30 seconds to tick off as the Blue Devils tried to come back from a deficit. Sweat's sack of Jones was the Seminoles' only sack of the game. In the season opener vs. Alabama, Sweat garnered ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors after posting five tackles, which included a seven-yard sack. The talented pass-rusher is seventh in the ACC with an average of 1.25 TFLs per game. GETTING DEFENSIVE VS. THE EAGLES Under head coach Jimbo Fisher, the Seminoles own a 7-0 record vs. Boston College since The last time FSU fell to the Eagles was by a defeat in Under Fisher s reign, FSU has only allowed 20+ points to the Eagles in one of the seven games played. Ironically, that was in FSU s dominant 2013 National Championship season, winning at BC in what was considered its worst defensive showing of that season by far. The Eagles are averaging just 13 points per game vs. the Seminoles in the seven-game span. FSU owns one shutout, a 14-0 win at BC in 2015 in which a defensive scoop-and-score was recorded by DB Jalen Ramsey. FOURTH-DOWN GAINS Florida State was able to buckle down on fourth-down attempts by the offense this season, holding Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson and Louisville to 0-for-2 on fourth downs last game. A huge stop was made by defensive ends Josh Sweat and Brian Burns with 4:38 left in a tied game vs. the Cardinals. Both edge rushers crashed the backfield and stopped Louisville s Reggie Bonnafon for no gain at the FSU 27, turning the ball back over. Opponents made the first five fourth-down tries against FSU this season, but the final play at Duke was batted down on fourth down before the Cardinals' 0-for-2 day. THOMAS AND TREY Redshirt senior linebacker Matthew Thomas and senior DB Trey Marshall are coming off big performaces vs. Louisville, hoping to carry that momentum into a short turn-around at Boston College. Thomas and Marshall led FSU with 10 tackles apiece. It was Thomas third 10-tackle performance of the season, tying his season high. Marshall s 10 wrap-ups marked a season high, falling just short of his career high of 11, which he has recorded twice before.
