5 NCAA & ACC RANKS GAME NOTES: OFFENSE Team Rankings (out of 129) AKERS RUNNING WITH ELITE GROUP Tailback Cam Akers is putting together one of the top rushing seasons by a true freshman in FSU history. The Clinton, Miss., native leads the Seminoles in rushing yardage and climbed to No. 3 on the Noles single-season list for true freshmen with his 199-yard performance against Syracuse. Akers had TDs vs. SU of 54 and 63 yards. It was just the second time in FSU history that a player ran for two 50-yard touchdowns in a game (Chris Thompson vs. Wake Forest, 2012, 74 and 80). FSU True Freshman Rushing Leaders Player Year Rushes Yards YPC TD Dalvin Cook Greg Allen Cam Akers From the moment Cam Akers signed with Florida State, it was suggested that he may be the heir-apparent to all-time rushing leader Dalvin Cook. It was the second-longest TD reception of his career, trailing only his Orange Bowl-record 92-yard score against Michigan. Murray collected three receptions for a season-high 102 yards at Boston College, his third career 100-yard game, and is in the midst of his most productive stretch of his career. Over the past four games (Duke, Louisville, BC and Syracuse), the Orlando, Fla., native has 15 receptions for 338 yards an average of 22.5 yards per catch - and two touchdowns. That s a dramatic increase from the 13 receptions and 99 yards (7.6 ypc.) through the first four games of the season. Consecutive starts entering the Clemson game for redshirt junior center Alec Eberle, the 27» longest active streak on the team. BLACKMAN AT BEST IN FOURTH QUARTER True freshman QB James Blackman continues to play efficiently in the fourth quarter of games this season, completing 29-of-51 attempts for 427 yards, with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Blackman is one of only nine quarterbacks nationally with four or more touchdowns without an interception in the final quarter. His fourth quarter QBR of ranks 36th nationally among all quarterbacks, but leads all freshmen who have attempted at least 32 passes in the final quarter. With 18 completions of 15 or more yards, Blackman ranks 18th nationally. Blackman led the Noles back from a two-touchdown deficit in the fourth quarter against Louisville, capped by a 20-yard TD pass to Nyqwan Murray with 8:58 remaining to tie the score. Thomas has at least 10 tackles in four games this season. His 15 at Boston College tied a career high (Michigan, 2016 Orange Bowl) and tied for the most in Jimbo Fisher's eight years as Florida State head coach. Telvin Smith in the 2014 BCS National Championship Game vs. Auburn and Kelvin Smith against NC State in 2010 also had 15 tackles in a game. Thomas's four games with 10+ tackles are the most for him in a single season and he has four of FSU's six games with at least 10 tackles in Trey Marshall (10 vs. Louisville) and Derwin James (13 at Boston College) have the other two. In those games, James and Marshall both finished one tackle shy of their career highs. SWEAT THERAPY Junior Josh Sweat has emerged as FSU s most consistent edge rusher this season, leading the Seminoles in sacks (4.5) and tackles for loss (10.5). Sweat is just one TFL shy of matching his career high of 11.5 in Sweat is third on the team with 43 tackles in 2017, already more than he recorded as a freshman or sophomore (41 each season). Against Louisville, the Chesapeake, Va., native registered a career-high nine tackles while adding two TFLs and one sack. Sweat is fourth on the team and first among defensive linemen with three pass break-ups, and his four quarterback hurries are a team high. In FSU s game at Duke on Oct. 14, Sweat came up with one of the biggest plays of the game. He sacked Duke QB Daniel Jones on the game s final drive at the Duke 36, allowing nearly 30 seconds to tick off as the Blue Devils tried to come back from a deficit. Sweat's sack of Jones was the Seminoles' only sack of the game. In the season opener vs. Alabama, Sweat garnered ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors after posting five tackles, which included a seven-yard sack. The talented pass rusher is sixth in the ACC and 29th nationally with 1.3 tackles for loss per game. THOMAS GETS FSU'S FIRST DEFENSIVE TOUCHDOWN Against Louisville on Oct. 21, redshirt senior linebacker Matthew Thomas tallied the first turnover of his career when he grabbed a Lamar Jackson fumble and rumbled 34 yards for the FSU touchdown. Mercedes-Benz Stadium Junior receiver Auden Tate had two receptions for 41 yards, including a three-yard touchdown pass from redshirt sophomore Deondre Francois in the second quarter. Francois was 19-of-33 for 210 yards and a touchdown. He completed passes to seven different receivers, including seven to sophomore Keith Gavin for 50 yards. Gavin did not record a catch as a freshman and made his first start against the Crimson Tide. The defense, led by redshirt senior linebacker Matthew Thomas and redshirt sophomore safety Derwin James, held Alabama to 96 passing yards and 173 rushing yards. It was just the second time under Nick Saban that Alabama has passed for fewer than 100 yards and rushed for fewer than 200 in the same game (Tulane, 2008). Matthew Thomas led the team with 10 tackles. Over his past three games (Florida & Michigan in 2016), Thomas has 32 tackles and has led the team in tackles each game. Junior Josh Sweat led the team with one sack as the Noles took down Jalen Hurts twice. Freshman running back Cam Akers was one of six true freshman to play for the Seminoles. Akers had 30 rushing yards and an 11-yard reception. Two redshirt freshmen - Josh Ball and Janarius Robinson - also made the first appearances of their career. Three sophomores - Gavin, defensive end Brian Burns and defensive back Levonta Taylor - made the first starts of their careers. Francois continued to climb FSU s all-time lists.
