First meeting Last Meeting...Tulane 67, Loyola 52 (12/19/46) THE OPENING TIP Loyola makes its first trip to the state of Louisiana since suffering a loss at Louisiana State on November 28, 1984, when it pays its first-ever visit to Tulane on Saturday afternoon. The Ramblers will be looking to halt a six-game road losing skid on Saturday. The Ramblers have started a season by winning at least two of their first three games in three of the last four years. Last season, Loyola got off to a 10-3 start, including victories over Mississippi State, DePaul and Valparaiso. The season marks Loyola s first as a member of the Missouri Valley Conference. The Ramblers had previously known just one league, serving as members of the Horizon League (also known as both the Midwestern City and Midwestern Collegiate Conference) since Dating back to , in its last five victories, Loyola is lighting up the scoreboard for 75.0 ppg and is knocking down shots at a sizzling 52 percent (131-for-250) clip. Hook is one of two players averaging a double-double through two games, along with junior forward Tre Drye (10.5 ppg, 13.0 rpg). Through two games, the Green Wave is shooting only 39 percent (45-for-116) from the field, but has been dominant on the glass to the tune of a +8.5 rebounding margin. On Wednesday night, Tulane edged Southern, 79-73, behind 24 from Louis Dabney. SERIES STUFF This is only the second meeting between Loyola and Tulane and the Green Wave collected a victory when the teams first met on December 19, 1946 in Chicago. The Ramblers are 9-9 all-time against current members of Conference USA and have collected nine of those wins versus Marshall. SECOND-HALF SENSATIONS Although the sample size is a bit small, Loyola is proving to be a second-half team through the first two games of the season. In the second half of games this year, the Ramblers are putting up 42.5 while sinking an amazing 58 percent (26-for-45) of their field goal attempts, including 56 percent (10-for-18) from three-point range. Conversely, in the first half of games, Loyola is averaging 30.0 and shooting 44 percent (21-for-48) from the field and 40 percent (6-for-15) from beyond the arc. Freshman guard Milton Doyle has been the standard for Loyola s second-half success as the Chicago native has notched 35 of his 41 total this season during the second 20 minutes. In addition to his 17.5 in the second period, Doyle has shot an eye-popping 56 percent (10-for-18) from the field and 63 percent (5-for-8) from three-point territory. FIXIN FOR A FAST START Getting off to a quick start to the season has been a common occurrence for the Ramblers. Last season, Loyola raced out of the starting blocks to a 10-3 record and two other times in the last four seasons, the team has gotten off to a fast start. The Ramblers won seven straight games to open the season and in , Loyola posted an 11-2 record to open the year. However, despite those strong openings, only the squad posted a winning record (16-15). A win at Tulane would mean the Ramblers have started a season by winning at least two of their first three contests four times in the last five years. BUSY BODIES Loyola is in the midst of a grueling start to the season that will see it play eight games in 24 days. Making that opening stretch even more challenging is the fact that the Ramblers will play six of their first eight contests away from the friendly confines of Gentile Arena. Last season, Loyola opened in similar fashion, playing eight games over the first 23 days. BOARDING SCHOOL Playing without injured forward Nick Osborne, Loyola has struggled to rebound the basketball and through two games, sports a -9.5 rebounding margin. If this trend keeps up, it would mark the first time since that the Ramblers posted a negative rebounding margin for a season. Head Coach Porter Moser Overall Record: Record at Loyola: vs. Tulane: 0-0 In his 10th year as a head coach and third at Loyola University Chicago, Porter Moser is known as a tireless recruiter and master game tactician. A graduate of Benet Academy, Moser is a native of Naperville, Ill., and came to Loyola following a stint as the associate head coach at Saint Louis University under legendary coach Rick Majerus. Named one of the top 50 assistant coaches in the nation by Basketball Times in 2009, Moser helped Saint Louis to a overall record during his four years on the staff and his recruiting efforts helped land several of the Billikens players that have guided the program to back-toback NCAA Tournament berths. In just his second season at Loyola, Moser navigated his team to an eight-game improvement in the win column, the best single-season jump by a Rambler coach from his first year to his second. In , Loyola recorded multiple wins over BCS conference teams for the first time since No stranger to the Missouri Valley Conference, Moser was the head coach at Illinois State from Prior to his stint at Illinois State, Moser compiled a record in three seasons as head coach at Arkansas-Little Rock. Taking over the Trojans program at only 31 years of age, Moser turned a 4-24 team into an squad in one season, the greatest turnaround in Sun Belt Conference history. 3 LOYOLA MEN S BASKETBALL NOTES - Game 3: AT TULANE THE SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS Christian Thomas was one of the most improved players in the Midwest last season and looks to build off of a sensational sophomore season. The 6-foot-5 junior forward has scored in double digits in each of the last 18 contests, the longest streak by a Rambler since Blake Schilb reeled off 21 consecutive double-digit-scoring efforts in , and over his last eight appearances is producing 18.5 ppg and 8.0 rpg, while shooting 55 percent (54-for-98). A starter in 33 consecutive contests, the St. Louis, Mo., native turned his season around with a 16-point, six-rebound performance in a victory over Mississippi State on December 15. Prior to that game, he had managed 4.6 ppg and 4.0 rpg through the first nine outings of the year, but from that point forward, accounted for 15.2 ppg and 7.5 rpg. He hiked his per-game averages from 5.0 ppg and 4.1 rpg as a rookie in to 12.1 ppg and 6.5 rpg a year ago. In his last nine road games, Thomas is producing 15.7 ppg and 7.7 rpg, while draining 59 percent (54-for-92) of his field goal attempts. Thomas, a 56 percent field-goal shooter in his career, opened the campaign by putting up 11 and 10 rebounds in a win versus Milwaukee, and has recorded a double-double in four of his last five regular-season non-conference games, going for 16.8 ppg and 9.6 rpg in those five contests. WHITE HOT One of three freshmen to start a game for Loyola last season, guard Jeff White displayed no signs of a sophomore jinx in the season opener versus Milwaukee on November 8. The 6-foot-1 Peoria, Ill., native erupted for a career-best 23 and added four rebounds, four assists and a career-high four steals to lead the Ramblers to victory and his impressive showing was the best output by a Loyola player in a season opener since J.R. Blount pumped in a Gentile-Arena-record 42 against Rockhurst on November 14, The point guard has been a huge factor in the team s last two wins as he has produced 18.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 5.0 apg and 2.0 spg, while shooting 58 percent (11-for-19) from the field. Dating back to last season, White has handed out 47 assists and committed only 19 turnovers (2.5 ratio) in his last 10 appearances and he enters Saturday s game at Tulane having converted 22 of his last 24 (.917) free throw attempts. In 11 career starts, he is tallying 8.7 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 4.4 apg and 1.0 spg and in his last five games overall is notching 13.4 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 5.0 apg and 1.6 spg, while hitting 55 percent (24-for-44) from the field and 63 percent (5-for-8) from three-point range. GETTING IT DONE WITH DEFENSE Defense has been the foundation of the Rambler program since Porter Moser took over the reins for the campaign. In the first two seasons under Moser s leadership, Loyola allowed only 53.9 ppg in its 22 victories, while also limiting opponents to 37 percent (447-for-1,197) shooting from the field and 27 percent (101-for-370) from beyond the arc. The Ramblers have held the opposition under 50 on nine occasions under Moser. Since the start of the season, Loyola s defense has surrendered 55 or less on 16 occasions after doing so just 15 times in the previous three seasons combined. In their 10 non-conference victories last season, the Ramblers yielded just 53.5 ppg, and held opponents to 37 percent (204-for-546) accuracy from the field and 28 percent (42-for-148) from three-point range. TRIPLE THREAT TURK Sophomore Devon Turk burst onto the scene last season and made his mark as one of the top three-point shooters in Loyola annals. The first true freshman to connect for at least one three-pointer in each of his first 10 games as a Rambler, the 6-foot-4 guard has hit at least one trey in 31 of 33 career appearances including in each of the last 15 contests. Turk, who established a Loyola single-season record for triples by a freshman (65) in , ranked second among Horizon League freshmen, behind only Cleveland State s Bryn Forbes (12.7 ppg), with 8.7 ppg. He led the Horizon League with a.433 (65- for-150) three-point field goal percentage last winter and posted the highest scoring average by a Loyola true freshman since Leon Young tallied 10.4 ppg in A starter in each of the final six contests last season, Turk is going for 10.6 ppg, 3.0 rpg and is shooting a whopping 53 percent (19-for-36) from beyond the arc in Loyola s last seven road games. With an ability to score in bunches, Turk totaled 21 in only 24 minutes in a victory over Mississippi State and 19 in 24 minutes in a win against Furman last December. He ripped down a career-best six rebounds at Tennessee Tech on November 12. Turk has gone into a bit of a scoring funk in his last four appearances, producing 5.8 ppg after putting up 11.9 ppg in his previous seven contests. HALL OF AN HONOR On November 24, the 1963 Loyola men s basketball team, which to this day remains the only squad from the state of Illinois to have won the NCAA Division I Men s Basketball Championship, will become the first-ever team inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City. That squad, which featured four African-American starters, played a huge role in the civil rights movement, most notably for its participation in the famous Game of Change versus an all-white Mississippi State team in an NCAA Regional game in East Lansing, Mich., on March 15, Loyola s Record When... 4 LOYOLA MEN S BASKETBALL NOTES - Game 3: AT TULANE CHICAGO HOPE Chicago native and University of Kansas transfer Milton Doyle is Loyola s first player from the Chicago Public League since Cortney Horton in The 6-foot-4 guard provided plenty of reason for optimism about the next four years with his sparkling performance in last Friday s season opener versus Milwaukee when he poured in 18, all of which came in the second half, including six straight down the stretch as the Ramblers grabbed a nine-point lead. Doyle s 18-point performance is the best effort by a Loyola freshman in a season opener since Majak Kou tossed in 18 at DePaul on November 21, Furthermore, Doyle s 18 were the most by a Rambler newcomer in his Loyola debut since Ross Forman hung 19 on LeMoyne on November 10, He followed up that impressive debut with an even more dazzling 23-point outburst at Tennessee Tech on Tuesday. Doyle s 23 at Tech are the most by a Loyola freshman since Jordan Hicks dropped 23 on then No. 15 Butler in the Ramblers victory on February 15, Though early in the season, Doyle has his sights set on the Loyola scoring record by a freshman (17.1 ppg) set by Tony Parker, the father of San Antonio Spurs star Tony Parker Jr., in Doyle leads the team with 20.5 ppg this season Missouri Valley Standings Team MVC Pct. The 6-foot-8 forward started the final nine contests of the season and over that stretch contributed 4.8 ppg and 3.0 rpg. In the team s Maroon & Gold intrasquad scrimmage on October 22, Osborne exploded for 25, on 12-of-17 shooting from the field, and corralled six rebounds. The best performance of his freshman campaign came at Milwaukee when he totaled 11, four rebounds and three steals. He tossed in 12 and grabbed three boards in Loyola s exhibition game versus Lewis on November 2, but missed the first two regular-season games of the campaign due to injury. SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED Earlier this week, Loyola announced the signing of 6-foot-6 guard Donte Ingram (Danville, Ill./ Simeon), the brother of former Rambler DaJuan Gouard ( ), and 6-foot-2 guard Ben Richardson (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) to National Letters of Intent to compete at Loyola beginning in Both players led their respective high school teams to state titles in MAKING THE GRADE Junior guard Joe Crisman was named Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.
