Southern Illinois won both meetings last season by a total of nine points, using two free throws from Tyler Smithpeters with one second left to force overtime in an eventual win here in the Ramblers first-ever visit to Carbondale. The two previous contests were way back in calendar year 1981, with LU s last win being a triumph on Dec. 18, 1981 NUMBERS DOWN, WINS UP Sophomore Milton Doyle wrapped up a terrific, non-conference season by being named Most Valuable Player of the Continental Tires Las Vegas Classic right before Christmas. One sign of the maturation of his game is seen in his shooting percentages, as he is one of the MVC s most efficient offensive players this season. Clearly the team s catalyst, Doyle played a major role down the stretch in the win over Evansville, knocking down a key threepointer before setting up Christian Thomas for the game-winner. While he is second on the team in scoring (11.9 ppg) and the team s leader in assists (4.1 apg), Doyle has reached double figures only twice in his last nine games (8.1 ppg). Still battling a nagging ankle injury, he was up-and-down on Wednesday against Drake, scoring just four points - but converting a huge basket down the stretch - to go with seven assists and six turnovers CT CLIMBING CAREER CHART Senior forward Christian Thomas is one of Loyola s most consistent players and he reached a personal milestone earlier this season, recording his 1,000th career point in the win at UT-San Antonio (Nov. 25). The 40th player in Loyola history to reach that mark, Thomas is one of 19 Ramblers to post both 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in their career. He has been efficient every step of the way - his career FG% of 55.4% ranks third on Loyola s all-time list - and he is now just nine rebounds away from becoming the sixth, active Division I player with 1,000 points, 600 rebounds and 20 made three-pointers while also shooting better than 50% from the floor (UNI s Seth Tuttle is one of the five). He scored the game-winner with :00.1 on the clock in the win over Evansville and bounced back from a three-point game versus Wichita State (1-9 FGs) with a team-high 16 points (7-11 FGs) against Drake NO. NAME YEARS POINTS 24. Keith Carter , Vic Rouse , Jim Tillman , CHRISTIAN THOMAS 2011-PRESENT 1,166 FROM WAY DOWNTOWN...BANG One of the nation s top three-point shooting teams, Loyola was hot from the arc during its two-game homestand, connecting on 52% (16 of 31) from downtown. The Ramblers drilled 10 in their loss to Wichita State and buried six more in the win over Drake. Loyola is shooting 41% from the arc for the season, good for 10th in the most recent NCAA rankings

4 PORTER MOSER Creighton, 1990 Overall Record: At Loyola: vs. Southern Illinois: 0-10 In his 11th season as a head coach and fourth at Loyola University Chicago, Porter Moser is known as a tireless recruiter and master game tactician. A graduate of Benet Academy, Moser is a native of Naperville, Ill. and came to Loyola following a stint as the associate head coach at Saint Louis University under legendary head coach Rick Majerus. Named one of the top 50 assistant coaches in the nation by Basketball Times in 2009, Moser helped Saint Louis to a overall record during his four years on staff and his recruiting efforts helped land several of the Billikens players that have guided the program to back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths. In just his second season at Loyola, Moser navigated his team to an eight-game improvement in the win column, the best single-season jump by a Rambler coach from his first year to second. In , Loyola recorded multiple wins over BCS conference teams for the first time since No stranger to the Missouri Valley Conference, Moser was the head coach at Illinois State from Prior to his stint at Illinois State, Moser compiled a record in three seasons as head coach at Arkansas-Little Rock. Taking over the Trojans program at only 31 years of age, Moser turned a 4-24 team into an squad in one season, the greatest turnaround in Sun Belt Conference history. Moser graduated from Creighton University, where he was a guard for Tony Barone s program, in MOSER YEAR-BY-YEAR YEAR SCHOOL RECORD UALR UALR UALR Illinois State Illinois State Illinois State Illinois State Loyola Loyola Loyola Loyola 13-4 TOTALS (.475) EXCLUSIVE COMPANY Milton Doyle collected plenty of hardware when the Missouri Valley announced its postseason awards last year. Doyle claimed both Freshman of the Year and Newcomer of the Year awards while also earning Honorable Mention All-MVC honors. Doyle is just the seventh player in MVC history to earn both rookie awards, with the other six listed below NAME SCHOOL YEAR Doug McDermott Creighton 2011 P Allen Stinnett Creighton 2008 Kent Williams Southern Illinois 2000 Rodney Buford Creighton 1996 Shea Seals Tulsa 1994 Eddie Bird Indiana State 1988 PROTECTING THE PUMPKIN In order for Loyola to be successful, it has to protect the basketball. The Ramblers turned it over 17 times per game in its first two Valley games - including season-high 19 at UNI - but rebounded to commit just 19 turnovers combined over its next two games. Loyola was sloppy in Wednesday night s win over Drake, coughing it up 14 times, including nine in the first half, and turned it over 15.5 times per game in the two meetings with SIU last year AT HOME ON THE ROAD After going 0-14 on the road last season, Loyola snapped a 20-game road losing streak in November at UT-San Antonio and has developed into a pretty good road team, bringing a 4-2 record in true road games (6-2 with neutral sites) into today s game. After earning its first-ever Valley road win at Evansville, Loyola is looking to win back-to-back conference road games for the first time under Moser and the first time since winning at UIC and Valparaiso, Feb , 2011 TAKE GOOD SHOTS, MAKE GOOD SHOTS After finishing second in the Missouri Valley in field goal percentage last season, the Ramblers, have picked up right where they left off, shooting over 47% as a team overall and 41% from the three-point line (10th nationally) through 17 games this season. The Ramblers shot just 37% (second-lowest this season) against Wichita State but bounced back with a 51% effort against Drake. Why is it important? Loyola is 12-0 this season when shooting a higher percentage than its opponent but just 1-4 this year and 5-53 (.086) under Moser when losing the shooting battle (only win - Evansville) BETTER ON THE BOARDS One of the primary challenges for Loyola this season will be finding a way to overcome its lack of height, an issue that often appears in the rebounding numbers. After getting outrebounded in six of its first seven games, the Ramblers have had equal or more rebounds than their opponent in eight of their last 10 games. Loyola battled the Valley s tallest team on average (Evansville) to a draw and, traditionally, its best rebounding team (Wichita State) to a stalemate. The breakdown of Loyola s improvement on the glass is below RPG Opp RPG Opp ORPG DREB% +/- First 7 Gms Last 10 Gms BALANCED SCORING IN VALLEY Last season, Loyola relied heavily on the inside-outside duo of Milton Doyle and Christian Thomas for the majority of its scoring. This season, with more weapons, the Ramblers have been able to spread out their point distribution. Already this season, nine different players have reached double figures and six different players have led the team in scoring. That balanced scoring has been even more visible during the first couple weeks of conference play, as Loyola has five players averaging between 6.2 and 12.4 ppg in MVC play after five Valley contests, led by Thomas (12.4 ppg) and Devon Turk (11.2)

Turk, who set a Loyola freshman record two seasons ago with 65 made threepointers, knocked down 64 from the arc last season to break into Loyola s career top 10 in that category. The Houston native has buried at least one from downtown in 68 of 80 career games and he sits in fourth on Loyola s all-time list, just four behind David Bailey and Majak Kou for second. Turk s streaky campaign continued for the better on Wednesday, when he went 4-for-4 from the arc in the win over Drake. Loyola s career 3FGM list is below: RK NAME YEARS 3FGM 1. A transfer from Coffeyville CC, Peterson has good size and can play either of the guard positions. His playing time has steadily increased and he has established himself as one of the top bench scorers in the Missouri Valley. Peterson led the Ramblers with 13 points (3-3 3FGs) against Wichita State and had averaged 10.3 ppg over his previous three games before being held to just two points against Drake. If you discard the first two, non-division I opponents for lack of data, the Ramblers have held the oppositions leading scorer under their average in all 14 games this season. Loyola clamped down on Drake s Reed Timmer on Wednesday night, limiting the Bulldog guard to just four points. A breakdown from MVC play is below NAME/SCHOOL SEASON AVG VS. LU Tramique Sutherland (Bradley) Seth Tuttle (UNI) D.J. Balentine (Evansville) Ron Baker (Wichita State) Reed Timmer (Drake) THE GRIND OF CONFERENCE PLAY While conference games are typically lower-scoring than non-conference games, Loyola hopes to maintain its high level of efficiency. A look inside the numbers shows that the Ramblers have done that, despite the fact that their actual scoring is down 8.7 ppg (67.7 ppg in non-conference/59.0 ppg in Valley). In actuality, its five Valley games have been played at a slower pace, with Loyola averaging 1.02 points per possession in conference, a marginal decline from its 1.07 mark during non-conference play SECURING THE PERIMETER Loyola has certainly improved on the defensive end this season and a big part of that is them locking up the three-point line. The Ramblers have been particularly stingy of late and have limited their last seven opponents to just 21.7% (30 of 138) from downtown. Drake finished just 8-of-26 (31%) from the arc on Friday, thanks in large part to Gary Ricks, Jr. who went 7-of-14 himself. Loyola ranks 29th in the country in 3-point field goal defense (29%) and are holding Valley foes to a scant 27% from the arc
