The teams split the season series last year and they have split the six meetings in the Windy City (3-3,.500), with the Ramblers claiming a win in this fixture last season. Loyola jumped out to a 17-point halftime lead in that game and were never threatened, using a balanced attack that featured four players in double figures, led by 17 apiece from Joe Crisman and Christian Thomas MISSING MILTON Sophomore Milton Doyle was enjoying a terrific sophomore season before a couple tweaks of an ankle injury forced him to the sideline. Doyle earned MVP honors of the Continental Tires Las Vegas Classic before Christmas and was doing a little bit of everything for the Ramblers after moving to the point guard position. He originally injured the ankle on Dec. 17 against Abilene Christian and aggravated it in the home loss to Wichita State on Jan. 11. He played in Loyola s next two games but has missed the last three contests (all losses) and will be out of action this afternoon as well. Doyle has averaged 11.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game in 17 outings while shooting 49% from the floor and 46% from the arc #32 CLOSING IN ON 1,200 Senior forward Christian Thomas has long been one of Loyola s most consistent players and his senior season has been littered with personal milestones. He became the 40th player in Loyola history to reach the 1,000-point mark in November and is one of 19 alltime Ramblers to score 1,000 points and grab 500 boards. This month, Thomas became one of six active Division I athletes to record 1,000 points, 600 rebounds and 20 made three-pointers while shooting over 50% from the floor (UNI s Seth Tuttle is one of the other five) and he now sits 24th on Loyola s all-time scoring list, one point shy of 1,200 for his career. However, he has struggled a bit recently, as the numbers below illustrate. Thomas was held without a field goal for the first time since Jan. 9, 2013 (0-4 at Green Bay) on Wednesday night against Wichita State, a span of 68 games, and has failed to reach double digits in three straight games, his longest streak since a nine-game run to open his sophomore season ( ) FGs FG% PPG 10+ Pts First 18 Gms Last 3 Gms SECOND HALF STRUGGLES One area where Loyola will look to get back to form is its second half play. 4 PORTER MOSER Creighton, 1990 Overall Record: At Loyola: vs. Illinois State: 1-1 In his 11th season as a head coach and fourth at Loyola University Chicago, Porter Moser is known as a tireless recruiter and master game tactician. A graduate of Benet Academy, Moser is a native of Naperville, Ill. and came to Loyola following a stint as the associate head coach at Saint Louis University under legendary head coach Rick Majerus. Named one of the top 50 assistant coaches in the nation by Basketball Times in 2009, Moser helped Saint Louis to a overall record during his four years on staff and his recruiting efforts helped land several of the Billikens players that have guided the program to back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths. In just his second season at Loyola, Moser navigated his team to an eight-game improvement in the win column, the best single-season jump by a Rambler coach from his first year to second. In , Loyola recorded multiple wins over BCS conference teams for the first time since No stranger to the Missouri Valley Conference, Moser was the head coach at Illinois State from Prior to his stint at Illinois State, Moser compiled a record in three seasons as head coach at Arkansas-Little Rock. Taking over the Trojans program at only 31 years of age, Moser turned a 4-24 team into an squad in one season, the greatest turnaround in Sun Belt Conference history. Moser graduated from Creighton University, where he was a guard for Tony Barone s program, in MOSER YEAR-BY-YEAR YEAR SCHOOL RECORD UALR UALR UALR Illinois State Illinois State Illinois State Illinois State Loyola Loyola Loyola Loyola 13-8 TOTALS (.469) CAN T TEACH HEIGHT One area where Loyola is deficient this year is height, with the roster boasting just one player taller than 6-foot-7 (Julius Rajala at 6 9). The shortest team in the Valley by average height, Loyola s effective height (a metric that looks into minutes by the power forward and center) ranks 344 out of 351 Division I teams VALUING THE ORANGE In order for Loyola to be successful, it has to protect the basketball. The Ramblers turned it over 17 times per game in its first two Valley games - including season-high 19 at UNI - but had been much better of late, averaging just 10.4 turnovers over its next five games. However, the Ramblers have been guilty of 14.3 miscues over the last three games (since Doyle went out), including 18 at Indiana State last weekend and 16 at Wichita State on Wednesday THE DOYLE EFFECT As mentioned earlier, Loyola has been dealing with the loss of Milton Doyle. While it is hard to quantify everything that the versatile guard brings to the table, a couple of stats are telling. Loyola has shot over 45% in 12 of Doyle s 17 games but have been under that mark in all four games that he has missed. In addition, the Ramblers assist/turnover ratio has been skewed, particularly over the last two games, as they have recorded just 16 assists against 34 turnovers (0.47 ratio) THEY SHOOT, THEY SCORE, THEY WIN After finishing second in the Missouri Valley in field goal percentage last season, the Ramblers have picked up right where they left off, shooting just under 47% as a team overall and 40% from the three-point line (15th nationally) this season. However, Loyola is mired in a bit of a shooting slump, shooting under 44% over its last six games. Why is it important? Loyola is 12-2 this season when shooting a higher percentage than its opponent but just 1-6 this year and 5-55 (.083) under Moser when losing the shooting battle (only win - at Evansville). In addition, Loyola is a perfect 7-0 this season when shooting over 50% from the floor and 9-0 when holding its opponent under 40% RAMBLERS NEED TO REBOUND ON THE GLASS One of the primary challenges for Loyola this season has been finding a way to overcome its lack of height, an issue that often appears in the rebounding numbers. After getting outrebounded in six of its first seven games, the Ramblers had the same or more rebounds than their opponent in eight of their next 10 games. However, Loyola has been outrebounded in each of its last four games (33-27 at Wichita State on Wednesday night) and goes up against the Valley s best rebounding (+6.2 margin) and offensive rebounding (13.2 oreb/gm) team today in Illinois State. The breakdown of Loyola s rebounding is below - RPG Opp RPG Opp ORPG DREB% +/- W-L First 7 Gms Next 10 Gms Last 4 Gms SCHEDULE GIVES RAMBLERS JANUARY JOLT Today s game ends an extremely tough calendar month for Loyola, from a schedule perspective. The Ramblers have already faced Wichita State and Evansville twice, endured road trips to UNI and Indiana State and close out January this afternoon against a tough Illinois State team. Loyola s January opponents posted a combined (.611) record and the Ramblers will soon turn their attention to February, when they only have to make one road trip to a team currently in the top half of the Valley - the return game at Illinois State TURNING THINGS AROUND Much has been made of Loyola s solid start to the season. Despite the recent slump, the Ramblers enter tonight s game one of 10 Division I teams to have 13 or more wins this season after losing 20 or more games last season (Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Hofstra, James Madison, Northeastern, TCU, Temple, Tennessee-Martin, UC Davis)

Turk set a Loyola freshman record two seasons ago with 65 made three-pointers and has not slowed down since. The Houston native has buried at least one from downtown in 72 of 84 career games and he moved into sole possession of second on Loyola s all-time list on Saturday at Indiana State. Loyola s career 3FGM list is below: RK NAME YEARS 3FGM 1. Blake Schilb DEVON TURK 2012-PRESENT 169 PETERSON PERFORMS FROM THE START Loyola s backcourt depth is one of the big differences between this year s team and last year s squad and Earl Peterson is one of the primary reasons. A transfer from Coffeyville CC, Peterson has good size and can play either of the guard positions. One of the top point producers in the Valley off the bench, he made the first start of his Loyola career on Wednesday night at Wichita State, finishing with five points and three assists in a seasonhigh 31 minutes of action. Peterson has played his best ball of the season in the cozy confines of Gentile Arena, averaging 8.6 ppg on 57% shooting in LU s 10 home games. He has had some ups-and-downs lately while dealing with turf toe (4.0 ppg, 1-9 3FGs over last five games) but he has been closer to his normal self over the past two games PROBLEMS IN THE PAINT Much like in the first meeting between the teams, Loyola struggled to get anything going in the paint on Wednesday night at Wichita State. The Ramblers were limited to just 10 points in the paint - the same total as in the first meeting this season - their fewest since Milwaukee held them to eight back in Dec., Paint touches are a big part of Loyola s offensive balance and the Ramblers are averaging 26.8 points in the paint outside of the two games against the Shockers LEADERS IN THE LAND OF LINCOLN Loyola is tied with Illinois State (and Illinois) for the best winning percentage among Division I schools in the state of Illinois. The top five Illinois schools are listed below (thru games of Jan. 29): TEXAS THREE-STEP SCHOOL W-L PCT. LOYOLA Illinois Illinois State Eastern Illinois NEEDING TO FIND THE FREE THROW LINE One difference between Loyola s non-conference and Valley performance has been its ability to get to the free throw line. In 12 non-conference games, Loyola made more free throws than its opponents attempts (180 FTM vs 169 FTA). That has nearly been the opposite in its eight Valley games, as Rambler opponents have made 97 charity tosses compared to LU s 103 free throws attempted FTA/Gm Opp FTA/Gm +/- FTA +/- FTM Non-Conference Valley As noted above, Houston native Devon Turk has established himself as one of the top shooters in Loyola history. Like most shooters, Turk has had some ups and downs this season but he has been terrific in Valley play, averaging 10.4 ppg and shooting a sizzling 54% from the arc and he has scored in double figures in each of LU s last six home games. If you discard the first two, non-division I opponents for lack of data, the Ramblers have held the oppositions leading scorer under their average in 17 of 19 games (Anthony Beane - SIU; Devonte Brown - INS). The MVC breakdown is below: NAME/SCHOOL SEASON AVG VS. LU Tramique Sutherland (Bradley) Seth Tuttle (UNI) D.J. Balentine (Evansville) Ron Baker (Wichita State) Reed Timmer (Drake) Anthony Beane (Southern Illinois) D.J. Balentine (Evansville) Devonte Brown (Indiana State) Ron Baker (Wichita State) RAMBLERS GETTING JOLT OF ENERGY FROM COFFEYVILLE Both Montel James and Earl Peterson, Loyola s two transfers from Coffeyville CC, have been terrific pieces as the Ramblers have shown tremendous improvement during the season. James as started 17 games in the frontcourt and is the reigning MVC Newcomer of the Week after averaging 14.5 ppg last week. Meanwhile, Peterson, who moved into the starting lineup on Wednesday night, has been a big part of Loyola s backcourt and is averaging 6.8 ppg with 48/38/75 shooting percentages (FG/3FG/FT) in 22 minutes per game SYCAMORES BREACH LOYOLA S PERIMETER DEFENSE Loyola has certainly improved on the defensive end this season and a big part of that has been its ability to lock up the three-point line. The Ramblers had limited their previous nine opponents to just 22% (35 of 157) from downtown before Indiana State knocked down 12-of-23 (52%) from the arc last Saturday. In addition, Devonte Brown s six triples in that game were more than five of LU s seven previous Valley foes had made as a team
