The Jammin Knights perform at all Men s and Women s UCF basketball home games. Participation in the ensemble allows for the continued growth and development of both individual and ensemble performance skills. Attendance & Grades: All students are expected to attend all rehearsals and assigned performances. If you anticipate being absent from a rehearsal, please contact Mr. Schreier in advance. Please note that an absence from rehearsal or performance by any member of the ensemble negatively impacts the entire group and greatly limits the performance level achieved. Simply practicing one s individual part more does not compensate for the loss of ensemble time. With this in mind, absences should be limited to illness, extreme emergencies, or other academic obligations approved by the director in advance. The following scale will be used for grading purposes: Excused Rehearsal Absence... No Penalty 0 Unexcused Rehearsal Absence.A 1 Unexcused Rehearsal Absence.B 2 Unexcused Rehearsal Absence.C 3 Unexcused Rehearsal Absences F
2 Performance Absences are Absences WITHOUT a sub. 1 Excused Performance Absence...B 2 or more Excused Performance Absence...C 1 Unexcused Performance Absence...F These additional policies will also be in effect during the semester: 1) Every 2 Unexcused tardies will lower your grade 1 letter. The director may remove absences/tardies if circumstances are warranted. 2) Performing out of uniform can lead to removal from performance and an unexcused performance absence resulting in a failing grade for the course. 3) An unexcused absence from a performance can result in failing the course. 4) Failure to prepare one s music prior to rehearsal or to participate actively in rehearsal according to expectations may also result in the lowering of the final grade. 5) Exceptions to these policies due to extenuating circumstances may be made at the discretion of the director. Rehearsal Expectations: 1) Be on time. 2) Arrive with individual music prepared. 3) Have a pencil. 4) Percussionists should arrive early to set up the necessary equipment for rehearsal. All members should warm-up individually prior to rehearsal and should be prepared for an ensemble warm-up at 5:30 PM. 5) During the ensemble warm-up, focus on fundamentals such as balance, blend, tone quality, and intonation. 6) Observe proper rehearsal etiquette by limiting talking and maintaining focus. 7) All members should remain in rehearsal for the entire period. Members should not excuse themselves in the middle of rehearsal except in case of emergency. 8) Always perform at 100%. Rehearsals are actually performances without audiences. Maintain high standards. 9) Make music, not sounds. Music involves an emotional connection. 10) Have fun! Enjoy the process! Performance Expectations: 1) Be on time (early). 2) Arrive with individual music prepared and with music in hand (Required to have at all games memorizing is not an excuse) 3) Percussionists should arrive early to set up the necessary equipment for performance. All members should warm-up individually prior to performances. 4) All members must be in proper uniform. 5) No food or drink (other than water) are permitted during the performance time. 6) Once call time starts, do not leave the stands except to use the rest room. (Please try to limit restroom use to halftime only) We do not have halftime breaks. 7) Once call time starts, cell phones are not permitted. This includes halftime. 8) Have fun! Cheer on the team! Failure to follow any of these procedures/expectations may result in an UNEXCUSED Absence. Folders and Music: Flip folders will be made available to any students registered for the course. All music should be downloaded from the UCF Bands website (UCFBands.com) in the members section. The password will be ed to you, along with the list of songs you will need for the semester. You must have all music at all rehearsals and performances.
3 Instruments: Instruments will be checked out before the first rehearsal at the Marching Knights Trailer. Students are responsible for the maintenance and general upkeep of the instrument. Report any damage immediately to the director. Attire: Jammin Knights uniform is all black. Students registered for the course will receive the official Jammin Knights polo to be worn at all games/performances. Black PANTS and black shoes are also part of the uniform and are the responsibility of the member to provide their own. Shirts are to be tucked in. Face paint, glitter, etc are not permitted. Hats/sunglasses, etc, are not to be worn when in uniform. Hair should be kept neat, no wild hairstyles (please ask director if you need clarification). Please note: Yoga Pants or Black Jeans are not permitted. Black Slacks are required for this uniform. If you need clarification, please see a director. Travel: The Jammin Knights may travel to the American Athletic Conference Men s and Women s tournaments and the NCAA tournaments at the discretion of the UCF Athletic Association. Travel is limited to 29 students and 1 director (30 total). Selection for the travel group will be made based on instrumentation, seniority, and availability. The director may choose not to accept members for travel for any reason, even if they have seniority. Any travel during regular class time will be excused with a program verification form provided by the director. Women s AAC Tournament: March 4-7, 2016, Mohegan Sun Arena, Uncasville, Conn Men s AAC Tournament: March 10-13, 2016, Amway Center, Orlando NCAA Tournament: TBA Social Media: We will utilize a Facebook Group Jammin Knights for reminders and announcements, in addition to Knight s Mail. 4 Performances: The group will be divided into three (3) bands, BLACK, GOLD, and WHITE. Each band will be assigned to 2/3 of the Men s and Women s games. If you cannot attend an assigned game, you must get a sub on the same part/instrument from the band that is not performing (Limit 2 games for subs, unless approved by the director. After 2 it may be considered an excused performance absence (without a sub), even with a sub). If you cannot get a sub, you are expected to be there. If you do have a sub, you must Mr. Schreier ahead of time (if possible) with the arrangement. You are always welcome and encouraged to come to games you are not assigned to. 5 Game Day Procedures: Band Parking is in Garage D. Please enter the CFE Arena through the loading dock on West Plaza Drive, between the Arena and The Venue. Seating for the Men s Games is in the student section, closest to 108 on the lower section. Seating for the Women s Games is in Section 103. Call times are listed in the chart above. Call time indicates the time you should be set and ready to play, not first showing up. Large instruments may be stored in the CFE Arena storage room, at your own risk. Many people have access to the rooms we store instruments in, and you are ultimately responsible for the instrument you check out. Game Day Protocols/Sportsmanship: Because the Jammin Knights are affiliate with the UCF Athletic Department, band members are expected to uphold the same standards of sportsmanship and decency that are applied to all other affiliates of the Athletic Department. the NCAA and its member institutions subscribe to the principle that intercollegiate athletics are an important part of the education programs of colleges and universities and, as such, are responsible for ensuring the integrity of the ethical environment of each campus. While spirited engagement during the game is encouraged, at no time is it acceptable to make any comments negative or against the UCF team playing, or the referees. Comments referring to race, gender, appearance, or sexuality will not be tolerated by members of the band. Any comments breaking these guidelines may result in immediate expulsion from the band and result in a failing grade for the course. We are to display good sportsmanship and be positive ambassadors of UCF at all times. Alcohol and Controlled Substance Policy: At no time when acting as a participant, agent, or representative of the University of Central Florida, the Athletic Department, The Department of Music, or the Jammin Knights shall any person act in violation of any federal, state, or local alcohol or controlled substance laws.
