The Bears defeated the University of Texas at San Antonio (W 71-59), and fell to Old Dominion (L 72-61), and Holy Cross (L 74-73) in the event hosted by Old Dominion at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. Morgan State senior swingman DeWayne Jackson was selected to the Liberty Tax Classic All-Tournament Team as a result of his performance during a weekend in which he averaged 14 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists with three steals. MORGAN STATE TABBED THIRD IN PRESEASON POLL Morgan State was picked to finish third in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's basketball preseason poll behind Savannah State and Delaware State. JACKSON AND CHILES EARN PRESEASON HONORS Morgan State senior DeWayne Jackson was selected to the Preseason All-MEAC First Team by the conference head coaches and sports information directors. Junior center Ian Chiles was selected to the Second Team. BOZEMAN LOOKS FOR ANOTHER 20-WIN SEASON For three of the last six seasons, all as head coach, Todd Bozeman has guided teams to at least 20 victories. Bozeman set the Morgan State record for consecutive 20-win campaigns in with a record and extended it with a campaign in , followed by a Division I school record record in The previous record was back-toback 20-win seasons under coach Nathaniel Frazier when he guided the Bears to a 20-8 record in , followed by 28-5 in BEAR SCHEDULE The Bears once again have an ambitious nonconference schedule this season. Morgan State's non-conference schedule sends the Bears to South Carolina, ODU, Virginia, Liberty and will compete in Bracketbusters. This year s home-opener at Hill Field House will be against Saint Joseph's, South Carolina State and Savannah State. ROAD WARRIORS Morgan State, which played its first eight games on the road, has won 17 of its past 30 games held away from Hill Field House, including a 1-2 mark on neutral courts. The Bears finished 5-10 in true road contests and 0-3 on neutral floors in and posted a 4-4 road conference ledger, which was its worst mark since Todd Bozeman took over the program in This season's schedule will send MSU on the road for 10 of its first 11 games, including a six-game road trip from Nov. 29-Dec. 29 that features contests in three different time zones. The Bears are guaranteed at least 19 games away from home this season. JACKSON CLIMBING THE MSU RECORD BOOK DeWayne Jackson (1,275, 422 rebs., 133 asts) needs just 18 points to surpass Jason McCoy (1,292 points ) to become the school's No. 12 alltime leading scorer. Jackson is one of three Bears on MSU's all-time scoring list who have been coached by Todd Bozeman. Kevin Thompson ( ) ranks No. 9 (1,487 points) and Reggie Holmes ( ) is the school's all-time scoring leader with 2,051 points. JACKSON BOARD WORK DeWayne Jackson has recorded 422 rebounds during his Blue & Orange career and needs just 78 boards to join an exclusive list of Bears who have recorded 500 or more career rebounds. JACKSON CAREER STEALS DeWayne Jackson is ranked among the top theft artists in school history. Jackson has collected 136 steals with the Bears and currently ranks No. 5. The school record for career steals is held by Terrence Wright ( ) with 186 career steals... Jackson is 52 steals away from becoming the school's new leader. JACKSON SET TO LEAD DeWayne Jackson is the lone returning senior who saw action for Morgan State last year. In fact, he is the only seniors on the Bears roster. There are seven (7) juniors, four (4) sophomores and two (2) freshmen on the Bears roster. NOT A COMMON GET-TOGETHER Morgan State will face six teams this season that the program has never met in its basketball history. The first time opponents are: UTSA, Old Dominionm Holy Cross, South Carolina, Illinois State and San Diego. The Bears do not see a familiar foe until the Nov. 29 matchup at Liberty, their fifth game of the season. The other five opponents MSU previously has played are the Univeristy of Virginia (trails, 0-1), Loyola Marymount (leads, 2-0), and Saint Joseph's (trails, 0-1). RECOVERING THE SWAG The Bears will look to rebound from last year's dismal season in which the Bears recorded a 9-20 finish. It marked Todd Bozeman's worst season as a head coach, and it was Morgan State's worst season since going 4-26 in Morgan State Bears Basketball

5 LAST TIME OUT: CHARLOTTESVILLE, N.C. Morgan State forward DeWayne Jackson scored a game-high 32 points, but it was not enough as the Virginia Cavaliers withstood a late surge by the Bears to coast to a win on Thursday night at John Paul Jones Arena. Darion Atkins scored 17 points and Akil Mitchell finished with 15 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists to help Virginia improve its record to 9-2. Morgan State (3-5) trailed at halftime but began to turn the tide midway through the second half. Virginia used a 12-2 run during a four-minute stretch to help push its lead to with 12:30 left to go. The Bears responded when Jackson converted back-to-back baskets to ignite a 14-4 run. A layup by Anthony Hubbard cut the Cavaliers' lead to with 6:52 left. Morgan State's 9-point deficit quickly turned into a 19 point deficit (71-52) when a 3-pointer by Paul Jesperson (11 pts) capped a 13-2 run by the Cavaliers to put the game out of reach. Morgan State had a tough time cutting into the lead as a result of the Cavaliers dominance on the boards, especially on the offensive boards. Virginia held a advantage in rebounding and scored 23 points off second chance opportunities. Jackson scored 12 of his 19 first half points during a 13-4 run by the Bears. The senior hit a pair of free throws to give Morgan State a lead with 9:15 left in the first half. Justin Anderson hit a pair of 3-pointers to pull the Cavaliers back ahead as they hit the next 15 straight points to take a lead. Virginia led by as many as 13 in the first half. Darion Atkins led the Cavs with 13 points in the first half, while DeWayne Jackson scored 19 of hit team-high 32 points in the first half. Shaquille Duncan was the only other offensive bright spot for the Bears. The sophomore forward recorded nine points and had three blocked shots. In that span, the Bears will played three games against outside competition. While in the Bahamas, the team was headquartered at the Sheraton-Nassau Beach in Nassau, Bahamas. The games were played at Sir Kendall Issac Gym (capacity 3,500). The trip marked Morgan State's fifth foreign tour since Previously, the Bears have traveled internationally to Brazil (1974), Colombia (1975), Canada and Cancun, Mexico (2011). We took a foreign tour in 2010," said Todd Bozeman. "We went to Windsor, Canada for six days and it was a great experience. The tour provides returning players that might not have MEAC DEF. 6 MORGAN STATE BASKETBALL SEASON OUTLOOK The Morgan State Men s Basketball team struggled tremendously last year, but look to bounce back and compete in the MEAC this upcoming season. Todd Bozeman, who enters his seventh year as Morgan State s head coach, has a talented team of returning veterans along with several new recruits who will bring strength to last year s roster. The edition of the Bears will have the experience, stability and excitement that will help Morgan State erase the disappointments of last year and return to being one of the top Mid-Majors in the country. To say the Morgan State basketball team struggled last year would be an understatement. It is clear that they suffered setbacks as evident by their 9-19 overall record and 6-10 conference record. The season is expected to be a totally different experience for the Morgan faithful altogether. The primary reason for the expected turnaround rests on the shoulders of senior returning swingman DeWayne Jackson. Jackson suffered an injury to his shooting hand during an exhibition game last year, which led to his poor shooting percentage through the first half of the season. The Bowie product is an important cog of the MSU basketball program, and his injury was a setback. Jackson looks to bounce back for a breakout year. The senior averaged 12.4 ppg to go along with 3.1 rpg as a junior, a slight decline in points and production from his sophomore campaign where he averaged 14.5 ppg while pulling down 4.6 rpg. I d like to see him get back to being a consistent player. I think that he has the ability, definitely, to affect the game in a lot of different ways. He can guard anybody, really. He s been a huge part of the success in the early part of his career. I think it s important for him to get back to that. It s his senior season, so we want him to go out with a bang. And that means getting back to winning and that s all he knew when he first got here. I think he s in the right frame of mind to do it. Morgan State would take another hit when Anthony Hubbard sat out last year. Hubbard, who transferred after a short stay at Iowa, is versatile, experienced and can play any position on the floor. His return this season will add firepower that will challenge the top teams in the conference. He s a man. He s a grown man. And he plays like it. We ll need him a lot to provide scoring, provide leadership, defense, rebounding. He really, really rebounds the ball well. He s a tremendous offensive rebounder, and he really pushes the ball in transition. He can play multiple positions; he can play the 1 through 4 and provide the same effectiveness. Who s Back: Blake Bozeman and Justin Black return to the backcourt, while Ian Chiles, Shaquille Duncan and Thair Heath return to the frontcourt. Bozeman will be heading into his sophomore year for the Bears. The 6-foot-3 guard played in every game as a true freshman and averaged 4.6 ppg, 1.7 rpg, 1.7 apg, while shooting 34.1 percent in 3-pointers. Black returns for his junior campaign after being limited due to a broken ankle just a season ago. Despite his injury, Black still provided the Bears with 8.3 ppg, 1.9 rpg in just 15 games of action. This season the coaching staff will look for him to continue to provide a scoring punch. Chiles returns as one of the most efficient lowpost scorers in the league. The 7-foot-2 center averaged 9.1 ppg, 4.0 rpg and 2.1 bpg last season. The coaching staff is looking or Big Slew to be more aggressive this year and become a premier player. Joining Chiles in the frontcourt will be Shaquille Duncan and Thair Heath. Duncan, a 6-foot- 7 forward, is a tough, high energy and rugged rebounder who used the offseason to improve his perimeter game. He saw action in every game last season and will continue to improve with additional game experience. Heath was injured a lot last year. He has returned to the Bears in top shape and the coaching staff is counting on him to provide a defensive presence in the paint. Who s Out: The depth in the frontcourt and backcourt takes a big hit with the departures of Kevin Thompson, Ameer Ali, Larry Bastfield and Aric Brooks. Thompson was one of the league s most dominant players throughout his career. As a senior last year, the NABC All-District First Team selection averaged 10.8 ppg and 8.2 rpg and completed his Blue & Orange career as the No. 2 all-time leading rebounder (1,210 rebs) and No. 9 all-time leading scorer (1,499 pts) in school history. Ali started in 27 of 28 games played during his senior season, and having his strong 6-foot-4 frame on the court provided toughness and board presence. Ali averaged 7.4 ppg and 4.5 rpg. The Bears backcourt will be without the services of two-year letterwinner Larry Bastfield. The Baltimore product started in 28 of 22 games last season and led the Bears with 2.6 assists per game, to go along with 5.5 ppg and 1.7 rpg. Also gone is Aric Brooks. Brooks, who played in 28 games, helped the Bears spread the floor with his outside shooting. He registered 7.9 ppg and 3.9 rpg and shot 37.5 percent from 3-point territory. Who s In: Morgan State has added five newcomers to their roster: Donte Pretlow (Dunbar); Cedric Blossom (Montrose Christian); Daryl Traynham (Palm Beach State); Tauron Bailey (Monroe College); and Rasean Simpson (Lincoln). Donte Pretlow is a 6-foot, 185-pound point guard from Dunbar High School. While leading the Poets to a 24-3 finish during the season as The Baltimore Sun s No. 1 boys basketball team, he averaged around 10 points, eight assists, five rebounds and two steals. The thing I like about Donte is, No. 1, it s important to get players that are from winning programs high school programs where guys have been well coached. A lot of time at winning programs, you understand the sacrifices you have to make to be successful. He won three state titles in a row. He knows what that s about. He s a really, really tough kid. He really knows how to play. Cedric Blossom is a 6-foot-6, 215-pound forward from Montrose Christian. Blossom is a tough young player who has the ability to cause matchup problems for a lot of teams. It s important to get guys from winning programs like Montrose Christian and integrate them into our system. That way you can maintain some consistency. Ced is very talented. I think he s very fundamentally sound. He s only going to continue to improve in our program. He gives us a guy that is flexible and can play different positions. The Bears are expected to get an immediate lift from Prince George s County native Daryl Traynham. Traynham, a 5-foot-9, 180-pound point guard, played at UMass as a freshman and spent his sophomore season at Palm Beach State in Florida. He completed the season by averaging 10.8 points per game, 5.7 assists and 2.5 steals for the Panthers. I ve known Daryl since he was 8 years old. He definitely a general. He s great in transition. The guys really enjoyed playing with him. He really Morgan State Bears Basketball

7 pushes the ball, and he s a pest on defense. He s what the doctor ordered. We look to him to be a general out on the floor. He shoots the ball better than people think. He ll be a great addition. Tauron Bailey is a 6-foot-6 wing from Monroe College in the Bronx. Freshman year they played in the [NJCAA] semifinals out in Hutchinson, Kan., for the national junior college championship. He s a tough, tough low-post player. He s really got a nose for the glass and he rebounds. He s just another tough, hard-nosed player. Rasean Simpson is another 6-foot-6 newcomer for the Bears. Simpson played at Lincoln High School in San Diego, Calif. where he averaged 12 ppg and 6.7 rpg during his senior year for Hornets squad that finished with a 31-2 record and ranked No. 15 in the nation. He s a wing player, really athletic, can shoot the ball. With DeWayne and Hubbard playing the wings, he ll be able to help us, but those guys will be the main focus. Returning Production Numbers: Morgan State returns 50.7 percent of its scoring, 35.9 percent of its rebounding and 47.3 percent of its minutes played totals from last year's team. The team leaders in field goal percentage (Shaquille Duncan -.646), three-point percentage (Blake Bozeman -.341), free throw percentage (DeWayne Jackson -.772), rebounding (Ian Chiles 4.0), blocked shots (Chiles 1.7) and minutes played (Jackson 27.1) are back in Five players who started at least 5 games a year ago also return Jackson (18), Chiles (21), Bozeman (6), Black (6) and Duncan (7). Final Projection: I think that we ll be faster and quicker. You can always see that. I think we have good chemistry. All those things are important. This group is together. I m excited and encouraged by that. Clearly, last year was a tough year for me the toughest year I ve ever had as a coach. I think this team in definitely different. You ll see some different things. the season against UTSA in the Liberty Tax Classic hosted at Old Dominion. The Bears nonconference schedule includes South Carolina, Virginia Military Institute, Illinois State and Univ. of Virginia. The team will travel to California before the New Year to face Loyola Marymount and the Univ. of San Diego. Morgan State s home opener will be on January 5 against Saint Joseph s, followed by a January 12 conference opener when they host South Carolina State. In addition to its non-conference schedule, Morgan State will face another tough MEAC schedule in , a season that will include the team s fifth-straight appearance in an ESPN BracketBuster game scheduled for February 22 or 23. Head Coach: Todd Bozeman returns for his seventh season as head coach of the Bears looking to guide Morgan State for another run at an MEAC Championship. Bozeman is easily one of the top coaches in the MEAC and will have to deal with a changed roster this season, mixing and matching the new parts with the old ones. If anyone can make it happen Bozeman can, due his extensive knowledge as being a premier head coach over the years. ALL-CONFERENCE SELECTIONS UNDER BOZEMAN During his tenure in Baltimore, Todd Bozeman has coached seven (7) different players to All-Conference honors, including four Players of the Year selections: Ron Timus (2007 2nd Team), Boubacar Coly (2008 DPOTY, 1st Team), Jamar Smith (2008 Offensive POTY, 1st Team), Marquise Kately (2008 & nd Team), Reggie Holmes (2007 All-Rookie, nd Team, 2009 Offensive POTY, 2009 & st Team), Kevin Thompson (2009 All- Rookie, 2010 Defensive POTY, st Team, nd Team), DeWayne Jackson (Rookie of the Year, st Team). The Morgan way. The Morgan basketball way. It s a good group. I just want to make sure every day we come out, we re trying to get better that day and take it one at a time. Who knows what will happen. We ll just come out and play hard and the chips fall where they may. Notes:» Justin Black was just shy of posting a tripledouble. The junior guard finished with a careerhigh 12 rebounds to go along with nine points and nine assists. Game 6 Morgan State, 81OT VMI, 80 December 1, 2012 LEXINGTON -- Redshirt-junior Ian Chiles made the biggest shot of his career with a game-winning jump-hook with 2.2 seconds left in overtime to lift the Morgan State Bears to a victory over the VMI Keydets Saturday afternoon at Cameron Hall. The win improved Morgan State's record to 3-3 overall and it marked their second straight win over a Big South Conference opponent, having defeated Liberty on Thursday night. Chiles' bucket came after the Bears defense forced a tough shot by VMI guard Rodney Glasgow (7 pts, 6 assists). Morgan State Shaquille Duncan pulled down the rebound and the Bears' bench called a timeout with 2.2 seconds left. Following the timeout, junior forward Thair Heath checked into the game to inbounds the ball. Heath, a former high school football player, completed a full court pass to Chiles. The 7-foot-2 center, who was being defended by VMI guard Brian Brown (5-11), simply caught the pass and turned over his left shoulder with a jump-hook off-glass for the game-winner. Chiles came up big for the Bears down the stretch. Not only did he seal Morgan State's victory, he also went 4-for-4 from the free throw line and scored 6 of the Bears' 8 points in the extra period. He finished the game with 13. The Bears overcame a 13-point deficit with 19:22 to play in regulation. They rattled off a 16-4 run to cut the game to one with 9:25 left. DeWayne Jackson hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 66 (6:43). From that point forward the Keydets did not score another field goal, and the Bears went on a 6-0 run. A layup by Duncan at the 3:53 mark gave the Bears a cushion. VMI (3-5) responded behind the play of Stan Okoye who finished with a game-high 29 points and 11 rebounds. Okoye was fouled with 24.4 seconds remaining and split a pair of free throws as the Bears held on to a advantage. With 12.3 to go, Glasgow was fouled and sent to the line where he hit a pair and tied the game. Notes:» Shaquille Duncan's game-high 14 rebounds came on the offensive end, and he finished with a career-high 17 points (8-8); both of which were career-highs.» MSU held a points in the paint advantage Official Basketball Box Score -- Game Totals -- Final Statistics Morgan State vs South Carolina 11/16/12 7 p.m. at Columbia, S.C.
