5 2018 Basketball Steering Committee Minutes of April 4th ADMINISTRATIVE AND DISCUSSION ITEMS At its meeting of Wednesday, April 4, 2018, the following administrative and other items were discussed by the PIAA Basketball Steering Committee. The Administrative Staff will give consideration to those items designated as administrative. The following items are shared with the PIAA Board of Directors for informational purposes: 1) Dr. Lombardi, Mr. Byers, Mr. Gebhart and Ms. Grassel reviewed with the PIAA Basketball Steering Committee the PIAA Inter-District Basketball Championships. All District Basketball Chairmen were commended on their assistance and cooperation in the recommendation of Contest Managers and subsequent management of the respective Inter-District sites. Mrs. Grassel made a presentation regarding the use of Google Sheets for the compilation of first round summaries. The Committee supported making the documents available to all members for their completion for first round contests held within their respective Districts. A concern was raised over the number of unused advanced sale tickets that are currently not used. Mr. Byers expressed that due to need by some competing schools, the tickets continue to be worthwhile in determining an appropriate gate sale. Mr. Kinder addressed a concern with sites or game managers not contacting competing schools. Mr. Byers shared that the current process for making contact is for competing schools to reach out to their contest managers. Due to the efficiency of contest managers reaching out to schools, some schools have become reliant on those individuals reaching out. 2) Mr. Anderson discussed the merits of adopting a shot clock for contests and the position paper in support of the shot clock from the National High School Basketball Coaches Association (NHSBCA). Mr. Wright addressed the concerns regarding the administration of the shot clock and additional rules implicated through such adoption. Additional members addressed concerns over the need of a shot clock for all competition. A concern raised was an adoption had the positive affect of making good games better, but also making bad games worse. (continued on page 13)

6 Basketball Steering Committee Minutes of April 4th 2018 Mr. Sette requested that the Philadelphia Catholic League be able to pilot the use of a shot clock. Mr. Byers addressed the concerns raised by the Board in the past in providing for pilots that treat certain leagues and Districts differently. 3) Discussion was held concerning the Religious Headwear Guidelines recently adopted by the Board of Directors on a First Reading. The Committee discussed the merits and risks associated with a blanket policy that would permit headwear for religious reasons. A motion reflects this discussion. 4) Dr. Lombardi provided background on the current recommendations of the Competition Committee to the Board of Directors to tighten the transfer rules for both in-season transfers and transfers made by students embracing the 12 th grade. Mr. Sette provided the background on a transfer that existed this past postseason and the steps taken by the District to address the transfer. 5) Mr. Anderson shared with the Committee that a fall coaches clinic was held on behalf of the association. An east meeting is planned for Once a date is finalized for the coming school year, it will be shared with the Committee. The PABCA held a three-point team fundraiser and looks to expand participation during the coming school year. PABCA has created a Ron Galbreath Coach of the Year scholarship and will be distributing information for participation the coming school year. 6) Mr. Manners brought up the concern of streaming during PIAA Championship playoffs. Those recognized during contests were unaware of current policies and restrictions. The topic was suggested for the District Annual Meetings and as part of the sportsmanship message to read before the start of contests over the PA system. ADJOURNMENT Mr. Byers adjourned the meeting of the PIAA Basketball Steering Committee at 1:05 p.m., Wednesday, April 4, NEXT PIAA BASKETBALL STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING: 12:00 P.M., WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3, 2019, BOARD ROOM, PIAA OFFICE, MECHANICSBURG, PA.

16 16 Coaching Advice To Help Build A Winning Program Building genuine relationships with athletes By Kevin Sutton, contributing writer Genuine relationship building takes time, and coaches today have to make a conscious decision to forge these relationships with their players. The ability to communicate with players is an invaluable skill. These relationships allow coaches to earn the respect and trust of their players. Once these genuine relationships are established, teaching can take place. And after proper teaching takes place, improvement will surely follow. Today s student-athletes use a variety of methods to communicate through social mediums and platforms. However, that variety does not necessarily make an individual a great communicator. I m a firm believer that coaches must reach their players on a level where they are most comfortable to truly develop a genuine relationship. These can be on emotional, spiritual, academic or social levels. It s also important to choose a location where the studentathletes are comfortable, such as their dorms, the coach s home, training table or during the team meal. In high school, I struggled learning geometry. One day, my geometry teacher attended one of my basketball games, and it made a huge impact on me because she saw how much the game meant to me. In class the following day, she told me that I knew more about geometry than most of my peers. I was sure she had lost her mind. (continued on page 4) Become a PABCA Member today!

17 17 Coaching Advice To Help Build A Winning Program She then gave me a piece of paper with the dimensions of the basketball court on it. She started to ask me geometry questions using the lines and angles of the court, and I answered all the questions correctly. She met me on my level, and she created a teachable moment that I will never forget. Here are some ideas that I have discussed with other coaches and have personally used during my coaching career to develop genuine relationships with my players. I m confident that if you try to implement some of these ideas, you re already moving in the right direction toward establishing a meaningful connection with your student-athletes. Theodore Roosevelt said it best: They don t care how much you know, until they know how much you care. Get to know their five Hs history, hopes, heartaches, heroes and honey. Work them out and help them to improve their skills. Invite your players into your home for a meal. Set aside time for 1-on-1 film sessions. Go to their homes to make a connection with their circle of influence. Discuss current events to capture their attention, especially if the event touches them personally. Choose books that you can read with them, and discuss the books when you re finished. Create a group chat with players via social media. Throw out a topic, and encourage the players to speak freely and openly about their feelings on it. Be observant of what your players do, what they say, what they wear use it to connect. 18 18 Coaching Advice To Help Build A Winning Program Becoming a better communicator and investing the time to develop genuine relationships with your players helps lead your team to incredible success. We all want our players to buy in to our programs and what we re trying to accomplish, but to achieve this you must first get them to believe. Believe in you, your genuine interest in them, their success and what s important to them. That belief is earned through trust, and trust takes time and effort Fall College Showcase September 22nd and 23rd for Boys and Girls at North Allegheny High School Watch for More Details!
