STILL STANDING TALL: Despite a 2-3 start to the season, the Badgers are still ranked among the top teams according to Ken Pomeroy. Wisconsin is ranked No. 33 overall in the KenPom.com ratings, owning a top-50 offense (#49) and defense (#24). GARD IN CONTROL: Wisconsin is in good hands with 3rd-year head coach Greg Gard. With a record of (.677), Gard owns the third-highest win percentage in school history (min. 60 games) behind Hall of Famers Bo Ryan (.737) and Walter Meanwell (.712) (more on page 9). WHO'S GONE: UW graduated 5 seniors off last year's team who accumulated 4,802 career points and 350 combined starts. The Badgers bring back just 38.3% of the points scored a year ago. WHO'S BACK: UW returns just 1 starter from last season in junior Ethan Happ. Sophomore guard D'Mitrik Trice is the only other player on the roster that had started a game (2). HAPP HAVING HIS WAY: One of just two returning All-Americans in college basketball, junior Ethan Happ is off to an impressive start. He is the only major conference player averaging at least 19.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg and 4.0 apg (more on page 4). YOUTH MOVEMENT: Against UCLA, Wisconsin started freshmen Brad Davison and Aleem Ford. The last time UW had 2 or more freshmen in the starting lineup was the final game of the season. Overall, freshmen are accounting for 26.4% pct of the Badgers' points (more on page 5). LONG EXHIBITION SEASON: The Badgers enjoyed an 8-game exhibition schedule, including a 5-game foreign tour of New Zealand and Australia. That UWM win came in the third-to-last game of Bo Ryan's coaching career and snapped a streak of 22 consecutive wins by the Badgers in the series. SCHEDULE STRENGTH Head coach Greg Gard has said on several occasions that strength of schedule won't be an issue for this year's Badgers. Judging by the early portion of the season, he appears to be right. In facing No. 15 Xavier, No. 22 Baylor and No. 23 UCLA, Wisconsin faced 3-straight ranked non-conference opponents for the first time in school history. He was the Adam Banks to Bronson Koenig and Nigel Hayes s Charlie Conway. With Koenig and Hayes gone now, though, Happ gets to become Adam Banks and Charlie Conway." This season, he's looking like one of the best players of the last 20 years. Happ is the only major conference player averaging at least 19.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg and 4.0 apg. In fact, over the last 20 years (since ) only 2 players in college basketball have averaged those marks: Ohio State's Evan Turner (2010) and LSU's Ben Simmons (2016). A er assuming the head coaching reins on Dec. 15, 2015, Gard will begin his third season as the head coach of the Badgers in on the heels of leading the team to the Sweet 16 in each of his first two seasons at the helm. In its inaugural fundraising event, GAC raised more than $1 million dollars in the fight against cancer. Gard is a 1995 graduate of UW-Pla eville with a degree in physical and health educa on. He received a master's degree in counselor educa on from Pla eville in Gard and his wife, Michelle, have two daughters, Mackenzie and Peyton, and a son, Isaac.
