(1/3/13) KEY NOTES TO CONSIDER 1 BOLD BODY OF WORK: Wisconsin boasts one of the country s more impressive resumes, having played the 3rd-toughest schedule in the nation according to the Sagarin Ratings. UW has 5 wins over AP top-15 teams, including then-no. 2 Indiana and No. 4 Michigan. IU (6) is the nation s only team with more top-25 wins than UW. 2 BO RYAN, BIG TEN COACH OF THE YEAR? Unanimously ignored as a preseason Big Ten championship contender even before losing starting PG Josh Gasser to a torn ACL in October, Bo Ryan and the Badgers find themselves in familiar position - in the upper echelon of the Big Ten standings. 3 DEKKER-ATED 6TH MAN: Sam Dekker has emerged as the most dangerous 6th man in the Big Ten. The reigning co-freshman of the Week, Dekker has scored in double figures in 6 of the last 7 games and is 4th in the conference, shooting 44.2% from 3-point range. His 9.4 ppg in Big Ten play is tops among Sixth Man candidates. 4 GETTING STRONGER, AS USUAL: The Badgers always seem to get better as the season unfolds, and this year is no different as UW is 6-3 in February and March. Over Bo Ryan s 12 seasons, Wisconsin has gone (.738) in regular-season games played on Feb. 1 or later (page 4). 5 ROAD WARRIORS: UW is 4-4 on the road in the Big Ten this season and 10-7 over the last 2 seasons. Wisconsin s.588 winning percentage and 10 wins trail only Ohio State (11-7) as the best marks in the conference. 6 BO KNOWS BIG TEN: Wisconsin has clinched a winning record in Big Ten play for the 13th-consecutive season, the 2nd-longest active streak among BCS teams (Kansas, 23). Bo Ryan s.704 (143-60) win percentage in Big Ten games is the best mark of any coach in conference history, and his teams have never finished lower than 4th in the conference standings (page 4). 7 TRUST IN BRUST: Junior Ben Brust is one of the most improved players in the Big Ten, averaging 13.9 points over the last 8 games. He also ranks 19th in the Big Ten in rebounds (5.3 rpg) and 7th in 3-point shooting (39.3%). 8 KING OF THE BLOCK: A Naismith Award Top-30 candidate, senior Jared Berggren is Wisconsin s all-time blocks leader. Berggren leads the Big Ten with 2.0 blocks per game and now owns 132 career swats. The 5th-year senior leads Wisconsin in scoring (11.4 ppg) and ranks 6th in the conference in rebounding (7.0 rpg). REMARKABLE RESUME The Badgers are ranked No. 22 in the AP Top 25 and No. 21 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, but that s just the beginning of their impressive resume. According to the Sagarin Ratings, Wisconsin is ranked No. 13 in the country, having played the 3rd-toughest schedule in the nation. UW checks in at No. 11 in Ken Pomeroy s ratings, but is ranked No. 41 in the latest RPI rankings. The Badgers are 5-5 against teams in the AP Top 25 this season, with all 5 wins coming against teams ranked in the top 15. Indiana (6), Georgetown (5), Michigan State (5) and Minnesota (5) are the nation s only other teams with at least 5 top-25 wins. This marks the fi rst time in school history the Badgers have posted 5 top-15 wins in a single season. UW is one of just 5 teams in the nation to have played at least 10 games against AP Top 25 teams (Michigan St. 11, Minnesota 10, Ohio State 10 and Purdue 10). Since , Wisconsin is the only team in the country to defeat two previous AP No. 1-ranked teams in the same season (beating IND & MICH). PEAKING AT THE RIGHT TIME OF YEAR Bo Ryan owns the best winning percentage in Big Ten history at 70.8%, but his teams seem to get even better late in the year. In regular season games played on Feb. 1 or later, Ryan s teams have gone (.738) over his 12 seasons. That includes a mark of 6-3 this year. Over the last 5 years, Wisconsin has gone (.733) in regular-season games in February and March, the top mark in the Big Ten (thru 3/7). Last 5 Seasons, Reg. Season Record Feb. 1 or Later Team Record Pct. 1. Wisconsin Ohio State Michigan State Purdue Michigan GAME 31: AT PENN STATE BO RYAN - COACH OF THE YEAR FAVORITE Praise for Bo Ryan as the Big Ten Coach of the Year has begun to roll in. On a recent Big Ten Network telecast, Dave Revsine asked Jimmy Jackson who his Coach of the Year was. Jackson replied: How can you not put Bo Ryan in? Revsine answered: Totally agree. ESPN s Dan Dakich and Sean Farnham echoed that on Sunday and Thursday, respectively, saying: Bo Ryan is my Coach of the Year in the Big Ten. UW was universally picked to finished between 5th and 8th in the Big Ten this year and many of those projections were before the Badgers lost starting PG Josh Gasser before the season began. After a 9-4 non-conference season, Bo Ryan s Badgers have steadily gotten better and not only positioned themselves among the Big Ten elite, but went 2-0 vs. front-runners Indiana and Michigan this year. The Badgers roster features no players from the preseason All-Big Ten team and no player among the Big Ten s top 20 in scoring. Bo Ryan earned Big Ten Coach of the Year honors following his fi rst two seasons at Wisconsin, winning in 2002 and BIG TEN CONSISTENCY Including this season, UW has notched 10 or more Big Ten wins in 11 of 12 years under Bo Ryan. The Badgers have also clinched a winning record in Big Ten play for the 13th-consecutive season. Among the 6 major conferences, only Kansas (23 seasons) has a longer active streak of finishing above.500 in league play. The Badgers have reached the 20-win threshold for the 7th consecutive season and the 10th time in Bo Ryan s 12 seasons at UW. Prior to Ryan s arrival, the Badgers had just four 20-win seasons in 103 years of basketball. UW s win seasons since is 2nd in the Big Ten behind Illinois (11). The Badgers streak of 20-win seasons is also the 2nd-longest active streak in the Big Ten behind OSU s 8 straight. Team Consecutive 20-win seasons Ohio State * Wisconsin * Purdue Illinois * * includes this season Under Ryan, Wisconsin has never finished lower than 4th in the Big Ten standings. UW s active streak of 11 consecutive seasons in the Big Ten s top 4 is the 2nd-longest in league history and the longest since Purdue had a run of 13 in a row 80 years ago. 5 DEKKER FOR 6TH-MAN Freshman Sam Dekker is the Big Ten s best weapon off the bench. Among players who qualify for the Big Ten s Sixth Man of the Year Award (fewer than 10 starts), Dekker is the conference s leading scorer during Big Ten play Big Ten Scoring Leaders, Non-Starters Player PPG RPG Starts 1. Sam Dekker (WIS) Tre Demps (NU) Will Sheehey (IND) Joseph Bertrand (ILL) Dekker has scored in double figures in 6 of UW s last 7 games, averaging 12.4 points and 3.4 rebounds over that span. By comparison, Indiana s Will Sheehey has scored in double figures just once in his last 7 games. Over his last 7 games, Dekker is shooting 58.0% (29-50) from the field, 50.0% (14-28) from 3-point range and 75.0% (15-20) at the FT line. During Big Ten play, Dekker is 8th in the conference in field goal pct. (51.8%) and 3rd in the conference in 3-point pct. (44.3%). Jason Bohannon (2008) is the only Wisconsin player to win Big Ten Sixth-Man of the Year. BERGGREN NAMED TO NAISMITH TOP-30 Senior Jared Berggren has been selected as one of 30 fi nalists for the 2013 Naismith Award, an honor awarded annually to the nation s top player. He is one of just 3 players (joining IU s Cody Zeller and Christian Watford) to rank among the Big Ten s top 20 scorers & top 10 rebounders. Berggren leads UW with 11.4 ppg and is 2nd with 7.0 rpg. Berggren also leads the Big Ten averaging 2.0 blocks per game and recently became Wisconsin s all-time blocks leader, owning 132 for his career. WRECKING THE RANKED In 12 seasons at Wisconsin, Bo Ryan s teams are (.469) vs. teams ranked in the AP Top 25. Over the last 3 years, the Badgers are (.556) overall against top-25 teams. At home, Ryan s teams are (.732) vs. teams ranked in the AP Top 25. UW is also 9-5 at the Kohl Center vs. top-10 teams in the Ryan era. Wisconsin s win at No. 2 Indiana on Jan. 15 represented the school s fi rst road win over a team ranked in the top 3 of the AP poll. Since the AP poll began in , the Big Ten owns a TOTAL of 5 road wins over AP top-2 teams. Wisconsin is the fi rst team to do it since No. 6 Indiana won at No. 2 Michigan in A FINISH THAT LASTS One of the keys to Wisconsin s success is its remarkable ability to fi nish games. Dating back to February of 2011, the Badgers have won 53 of their last 54 games when leading or tied with 5:00 to go. That includes a mark of 18-1 this season with the only loss coming at Minnesota in which UW led with 5:00 remaining. ROAD WARRIORS Under Bo Ryan, Wisconsin is renowned for its incredible home record, but the Badgers have also enjoyed remarkable success on the road. Since Bo Ryan was hired in 2001, Wisconsin has been the Big Ten s best road team, owning the most true road wins (66) and best road win percentage (.500) in the conference. In fact, in that era Wisconsin is the only Big Ten team with a road record of.500 or better. The Badgers have won 89 of their last 90 games when owning the better FG percentage, including 20 consecutive such wins. Wisconsin s only loss since 2009 when shooting a higher FG% was a loss at Iowa (2/23/12). UW is 12-0 when shooting at least 45.0% from the fi eld and 8-10 when not reaching that mark. Wisconsin s last loss when shooting 45.0% or better was a loss at Iowa (2/23/12). UW is 19-4 when holding opponents below 45.0% shooting from the fi eld and 1-6 when foes hit more than 45.0%. His 5 double-doubles ties for 4th in the Big Ten, trailing only Trevor Mbakwe (10), Cody Zeller (8) and Adrian Payne (6). After leading UW to a pair of overtime wins vs. Iowa and Michigan, including his buzzer-beating 3-point shot to force OT against the Wolverines, junior Ben Brust earned the Big Ten s Co-Player of the Week award (Feb. 11). Brust led UW in scoring in both games with 14 vs. Iowa and 18 vs. Michigan. A year after posting 26 assists and 26 TOs, Brust has played much more efficiently this season. With 72 assists and 37 turnovers, Brust is 2nd on the team with a assist-to-to ratio. BOMBS-AWAY BRUST Junior Ben Brust ranks 7th in the Big Ten, shooting 39.3% (68-of-173) from long range and is 5th in the conference averaging 2.3 treys per game. In UW s 11 Big Ten wins, Jackson has dished 33 assists with 26 turnovers (1.3 ratio). In the Badgers 5 Big Ten losses, Jackson has 16 assists and 16 turnovers (1.0 ratio).
