The Blue Devils are against the Orange, with two wins in Durham and the tie coming in Syracuse. The Blue Devils picked up a 2-0 victory last year at Syracuse behind Kayla McCoy s fourth multigoal performance of her career. The win gave Duke its ninth ACC win of the year, breaking the school record. It s been a hot stretch as of late for the Blue Devils, as they are riding a five-game winning streak. All five wins came during a season-long five-game home stand. During that stretch, Duke has outscored its opponents, 11-2, and has racked up three shutouts. In its first three contests, Duke scored just three times and went Duke s last win was a 1-0 decision against Old Dominion. McCoy tallied her second goal of the year just 2:01 into the game, the earliest of the year for Duke. Goalkeeper Brooke Heinsohn has been a major key in Duke s stellar defense, recording five shutouts this season, which stands second in the ACC and seventh in the nation. With a team-high five assists this season, Ella Stevens has 22 for her career. That has her tied for fifth in the DWS record book. Also making moves in the record book is McCoy, whose 28-career goals are tied for 10th all

Tess Boade scored the equalizer, with Kayla McCoy and Delaney Graham contributing the assists. Karlie Paschall put in the next two goals via penalty kicks. Both Boade and Paschall scored for the first time this season, while Graham picked up the first point of her career. The Blue Devils finished off non-conference play and a five-game home stand with a 1-0 victory against Old Dominion, using an early goal from McCoy and stellar defense the final 88 minutes to secure the win. Duke has now won five-straight games entering ACC play. Thursday, September 6 No. 14 Duke def. Nebraska, 3-1 Sunday, September 9 No. 14 Duke def. Old Dominion, 1-0 SCOUTING THE ORANGE... Syracuse enters Sunday s ACC opener looking to snap a three-game losing streak. Kate Hostage leads the Orange with four goals on the year, which is tied for ninth in the league. Jordan Harris has been the main goalkeeper for SU, starting seven matches and playing 475:30 minutes, allowing seven goals while making 24 saves. THE HURRICANE FLORENCE IMPACT Due to potential inclement weather from Hurricane Florence, Duke Athletics either cancelled or postponed scheduled home events for this week and weekend. The incoming hurricane also altered the Blue Devil women s soccer team s travel plans, as they departed for Syracuse, N.Y., on Thursday morning. DWS traveled to Gettysburg, Pa., practiced at Gettysburg College and then made the rest of the trip on Friday. ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER W Duke has been on a roll as of late, piecing together five-straight wins heading into conference play. The stretch is the longest since their program-record 19-game winning streak last season, which spanned from Aug. 20 Nov. 3, During the streak, Duke has outscored opponents, 11-2, with seven different players scoring and have posted a trio of shutouts. All five wins came during the Blue Devils five-game home stand, the longest such stretch of their season. STEVENS AMONG THE DWS ASSISTS ELITE... With her team-high five assists so far, Ella Stevens has cracked the top five on Duke s all-time assists list. She now has 22 for her career, which ties her for fifth in DWS history with Imani Dorsey ( ), Carolyn Ford ( ) and Laura Weinberg ( ). She now sits one away from tying Kelly Walbert ( ) for fourth place and seven from tying Mollie Pathman ( ) for third. Andi Melde ( ) holds the alltime record at Duke with 42. MCCOY ALSO MAKING MOVES IN THE RECORD BOOK Stevens isn t the only Blue Devil making waves in the record books, as senior Kayla McCoy has cracked the top 10 in all-time goals while continuing her climb up the career game-winning goals list. She currently has 28 goals over her career, tying former Blue Devils Caitlin Connolly ( ), Carolyn Riggs ( ) and Kaitlyn Kerr ( ) for 10th all-time. Her next score will tie Imani Dorsey ( ) and Kim DeCesare ( ) for sixth. McCoy s two game-winning goals this season has her career total now up to 12, putting her along at fourth on the DWS all-time list. She s two shy of Elizabeth Redmond ( ) for third place and eight behind the record holder Kelly Walbert ( ), who has 20. SYRACUSE SEPTEMBER 16 TEAM PASCHALL SHINES FROM THE SPOT The first two penalty attempts of the season came up against Nebraska and Blue Devil sophomore Karlie Paschall made each one count to help Duke secure a 3-1 win. Tied at 1-1, Paschall put away Duke s first PK of the season and then added a second minutes later to give the squad a little bit of insurance. The two conversions were the first PK attempts of Paschall s career outside of a shootout. The Brentwood, Tenn., native converted her PK attempt during the shootout against UCLA in the 2017 NCAA College Cup Semifinals. PLUCK GROWING INTO AN OFFENSIVE THREAT On one of the most youthful squads in Duke history, it only seems right that a freshman is making an early impact. Freshman Mackenzie Pluck is tied for the team lead with three goals in 2018, two of those being game winners. Her trio of scores stand top 15 in the ACC, while the two game-winning goals are tied for tops in the ACC and stand 35th in the country. BLUE DEVILS STARTING TO HEAT UP It was a slow start to the year for Duke, only tallying three goals, giving up three and going in the first three matches. That tide has turned in the last five contests, as the Blue Devils have outscored foes 11-2 and going in the process. Since allowing two goals to Illinois, the Blue Devils have elevated their defense to one of the nation s best. Duke s five shutouts are tied for third in the ACC and its.625 shutout percentage is third in the conference. It s save percentage stands at.875, which is good for third in the league and 25th in the NCAA. Brooke Heinsohn has been key behind that defensive surge, standing tied for second in the ACC and seventh in the nation with five shutouts. She is also fifth in the league and 29th nationally with a 0.49 GAA. CAREER GOAL NO. 1 FOR MCGUIRE After coming close in the first three matches of the season, freshman Marykate McGuire finally broke through with her first-career goal against Elon. Ella Stevens fed the ball to the left side of the 18 to McGuire, who slammed it home to put the match s score at its final total, 3-0. McGuire is the second Blue Devil this year to score her first-career goal, joining Mackenzie Pluck who tallied her first score in the season-opening win against No. 23 Ohio State. WEEKLY HONORS FOR HEINSOHN After posting a pair of shutouts, including a career showing in a top 15 road matchup, Duke goalkeeper Brooke Heinsohn was been named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week on Aug. 28. The is the first ACC weekly honor for Heinsohn in her career. This is the first weekly laurel for a Blue Devil since Chelsea Burns was tabbed ACC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 31, 2017 and the first for a Duke netminder since EJ Proctor on Sept. 12, Heinsohn recorded her second and third shutouts of the season last week. Topping that list was a career-high 10 saves in the clean sheet at No. 15 Georgetown, as the two sides played to a scoreless draw. The Norfolk, Mass., native then turned in a second-straight shutout in a Sunday 3-0 victory against Elon behind three saves. HEINSOHN BOUNCES BACK AT NO. 15 GEORGETOWN... After allowing a pair of goals against Illinois, redshirt sophomore Brooke Heinsohn came back with a vengeance in a top 15 showdown at Georgetown on Thursday. The Blue Devil goalkeeper shutdown the 15th-ranked Hoyas behind a career-high 10 saves. Her shutout was the second of the young season. Both of the clean sheets have come against top 25 opponents, marking the first time in program history that Duke has shut out two top 25 foes in the first three contests of the season. GAME 5

6 FRESHMEN SHINE AGAINST NO. 23 OHIO STATE Newcomer Mackenzie Pluck didn t waste much time making her presence known on the collegiate scene, as she tallied her first-career goal just minutes into the start of the second half of Thursday s Blue Devil win. She became the first freshman since Ella Stevens and Lexi Magliarditi in 2016 against Wofford to score their first-career goal in their collegiate debut. Fellow freshmen Marykate McGuire and Sydney Simmons earned the start in Thursday s contest, marking the most freshmen to start their first collegiate match in a season for Duke since 2014, when five players did. TRIO OF FORMER BLUE DEVILS NAMED TO USA U-23 SQUAD... The U.S. U-23 squad announced its roster for the upcoming Nordic Tournament (Aug Sept. 3) and three former Blue Devils will don the Red, White and Blue: Imani Dorsey (Sky Blue FC; NWSL), Schuyler DeBree (AC Sparta Praha; Prague, Czech Republic) and Toni Payne (Sevilla FC; Seville, Spain). RACIOPPI WITH THE HOT START Taylor Racioppi scored in the first two games this season and currently tied for the team lead with four points and two goals. NATIONAL STAFF OF THE YEAR BACK AT IT AGAIN... A key to Duke s success in 2017: the Blue Devil coaching staff. That group of four, awarded United Soccer Coaches National Staff of the Year last season, returns for its third season together. Over the past two seasons the crew has won 38 matches, advanced to the NCAA College Cup, won an ACC regular season title and finished top 10 both years in the Coaches poll. Individually, the staff has produced four All-Americans, 19 All-ACC selections and eight Academic All-America selections. SYRACUSE SEPTEMBER 16 TEAM BULK OF 2017 SCORING RETURNS FOR THE BLUE DEVILS... Despite losing a handful of seniors from the memorable 2017 season, including a program-record six NWSL picks, five starters and a majority of the Blue Devils scoring returns this season. Duke did lose top point getter Imani Dorsey (14 goals, 10 assists and 38 points), but returns four of its top five point scorers and four of its top five in goals, including Kayla McCoy (14 goals, seven assists and 35 points), Ella Stevens (five goals, 11 assists and 21 points), Chelsea Burns (six goals, three assists and 15 points) and Taylor Racioppi (five goals, five assists and 15 points). WEALTH OF OFFSEASON US EXPERIENCE FOR DWS... Four different Blue Devils saw time with a United States squad during the offseason.
