Early this season, the Bulldogs defeated Evansville in Des Moines, 88-76, behind 28 points from Reed Timmer. Drake has lost five-straight games with three of them coming against the top three teams in the MVC standings. Evansville takes to its home court on a three-game win streak. The final four teams remaining on Drake s schedule have a combined MVC record. In the Bulldogs last game, Indiana State held Drake to just 31.7 percent shooting to cruise past the Bulldogs, Drake remains ranked third in conference scoring with 71.9 points per game against conference opponents. Last weekend at Bradley, T.J. Thomas notched his first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. He has 34 rebounds in the last four games. In the last 15 games, junior Ore Arogundade has averaged 11.5 points per game while shooting 46 percent from the field and 44.8 percent from the three-point arc. He has scored in double-figures in 10 of those games including a career-high 19 points in the overtime win against SIU. Under head coach Jeff Rutter, the Bulldogs are averaging 73.6 points per game and have made nine or more three-pointers in 10 of the 18 games and are attempting 27.5 three-pointers per game. 2 Jeff Rutter, a veteran coach with vast experience in Iowa and the Missouri Valley conference, is in his fourth season at Drake. On Dec. 6, 2016, Rutter assumed head coaching duties after three-and-a-half years as an assistant coach. Rutter came to Drake after seven seasons at Iowa State where he helped coach 13 all-big 12 student-athletes and aided in 46 wins, the third-best two-year win total in Cyclone history, resulting in a pair of NCAA Tournament berths. Rutter spent the first four seasons of his ISU tenure as an assistant coach before assuming the role of director of operations in the spring of 2010 under Fred Hoiberg. Rutter gained three seasons of experience coaching in the Missouri Valley Conference as an assistant at UNI from Head Coach , where the Panthers compiled a mark and made three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances under head coach Greg McDermott. In his first season in Jeff , UNI won the MVC Tournament title and qualified RUTTER for its first NCAA appearance since The following year ( ), UNI earned its first ever at-large NCAA berth with First a No. 11 seed while posting a record. The Panthers tied a school record in wins in Rutter s final year at UNI with a record. Three Panthers earned first-team all-missouri Valley Conference honors four times in his three seasons in Cedar Falls. In 2006, Rutter was honored by his peers by winning the NABC Literacy Award, given annually to a coach who is committed to promoting education to children in local schools and communities. Past winners of the prestigious award include Mike Krzyzewski, Gene Keady, Tubby Smith and Fran Fraschilla. Rutter s career also includes a lengthy tenure as the head coach at Wisconsin-Parkside from before joining McDermott s staff. UW-P finished overall his final season, its first winning record since In his first year as head coach in , Rutter s team stunned the No. 1 team in the nation, the University of Indianapolis, In his second season, the team posted its first back-to-back double-digit win seasons in a decade. In , UW-P was nationally ranked (No. 16) for the first time since the school joined the Division II ranks. At UW-P, Rutter developed the Adopt-a-Ranger program and the Junior Rangers built a strong connection with schools in the Racine-Kenosha area. His teams also posted some of the highest grade-point averages in the school s 35-year basketball history. He assisted in developing corporate sponsorship programs and was instrumental in the development of the Ranger Athletic Club and the men s basketball Dunk Club. Rutter has also taught at various levels, including serving as a clinical associate professor from at UW-P, a lecturer at North Dakota State from and teaching at the elementary, junior and senior high school levels. He began his collegiate coaching career at North Dakota State from where the Bison posted a mark and made two NCAA tournament appearances in his final two seasons there. The Bison advanced to the Sweet 16 with a 21-9 mark in before earning their first North Central Conference championship in 14 years with a 22-8 record in He served one year as an assistant at Stetson University in before accepting the head coaching position at UW-P. Rutter lettered in basketball and football at Nathan Hale High School in West Allis, Wis. Prior to Carroll, he was the head coach at the University of Wisconsin- Superior. CHRIS McMAHON Director of Operations Is in his second season on the Drake men s basketball staff... promoted to director of operations on Dec joined the program after five seasons as the head coach at nearby Des Moines Roosevelt High School. The Bulldogs have enjoyed tremendous success in the classroom recently. Drake was one of just 19 Division I programs to earn the NABC Academic Excellence Award for the season. The award is given to programs that record a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. In , Reed Timmer was named the MVC Men s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Timmer was also one of four Bulldogs named to the MVC Men s Basketball Scholar-Athlete Team, joining Graham Woodward, Karl Madison and Kale Abrahamson. The honor was the second on Madison s career. Kale Abrahamson also earned third-team Co- SIDA Academic All-America honors. The season also saw a Bulldog earn MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors eight times. Reed Timmer led the way by winning the award five times. Kale Abrahamson took the honor in two weeks with Graham Woodward also earning the honor. This season, Reed Timmer was named the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week on Dec. 26 and Jan. 3 Make Drake 8-19 and 6-9 in the MVC. Give the Bulldogs seven wins in their last 16 games. HOME SWEET HOME The Bulldogs have won four of their seven home MVC games as part of their current span of five wins in eight home games since Dec. 22. WOODWARD BOUNCES BACK Last season, Graham Woodward averaged 10.8 points per game, but had struggled for much of this season. However, in the last eight games he has bounced back by scoring 7.6 points per game on 43.1 percent shooting with 2.5 assists per game. The road victory was their first road win since Jan. 28, 2015 at Bradley, a span of nearly two full years. Additionally, it was just the team s second win in 25 tries in Springfield, Mo., and the first since TWO WITH 10 OR MORE T.J. Thomas and Nick McGlynn each recorded double-digit rebounds in the win at Missouri State. Thomas hauled in a then career-high 11 rebounds while McGlynn notched his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. It was the first time this year two Bulldogs have had double-figure boards this season and the first since Jan. 12, Three games later, Thomas recorded his first double-double with 10 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. The junior is averaging 8.3 rebounds per game in the last three games. SPEEDING UP In head coach Jeff Rutter s 18 games at the helm of the Bulldogs, the team s pace of play has sped up dramatically.
