Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. and the game can be heard on Syracuse IMG Sports Radio Network with Brian Higgins ( 04) on the play-by-play call. This is the first meeting in Syracuse program history between the Orange and the Chanticleers. Cuse has squared-off with a team from the Carolinas 40 times, boasting an record in those 40 outings. Most recently, the Orange defeated North Carolina in the 2017 ACC Tournament before falling to Duke. Syracuse posted a 5-2 record in 2016 vs. teams from North and South Carolina. Syracuse sits at a perfect 10-0 on the season after topping Drexel on Dec. 9. The Orange are one of three undefeated teams remaining in the ACC, joined by Florida State and Louisville, and are one of 11 unbeaten teams left in the nation. Just six NCAA Division I teams have eclipsed the 10-win mark this season. Two Orange, Miranda Drummond (18.9) and Tiana Mangakahia (16.4) are averaging double-digit outings this season while three Orange Digna Strautmane (8.5), Drummond (7.6) and Gabrielle Cooper (6.3) are averaging at least 5.0 rebounds per game thus far in the campaign. The Chanticleers sit at 5-4 on the season, most recently coming off a pair of wins at home against Fort Wayne and North Carolina Central. Coastal Carolina is led by senior Jas Adams and sophomore DJ Williams who are both averaging double-digit outings every game. The pair combine for 55 percent of the Chanticleers scoring this season. Coastal has only faced one other power five school, taking a loss to Nebraska in the San Juan Shootout on Nov. 24. LAST TIME OUT The Orange eclipsed the 10-win mark with their double-digit win over Drexel. Syracuse used a dominant second half, shooting.571 (16-for-28) from the field, to propel the team to victory. Freshman Digna Strautmane led the second half charge for the Orange, notching 12 points, eight rebounds and three blocks in the second half alone. The freshman finished the game with a career-high 19 points and 11 rebounds, leading the team in both categories. Saturday s game was a team effort as five different Orange accounted for Syracuse s 72 points. All five scorers finished the night in double digits, led by Strautmane (19). This is just the second time this season that five Orange have scored in double figures with the other occurrence coming in the season opener against Morgan State. Redshirt junior Miranda Drummond (17 pts) tallied her 10th double-digit outing of the season while Tiana Mangakahia nabbed her team-leading eighth double-double of the year (16 pts, 10 assists). The Orange completed the comeback bid after trailing the Dragons, 41-33, at the half. Saturday s game was the fourth time this season that Syracuse has comeback from a halftime deficit to take the win. The comeback kids posted victories over Northwestern, Vanderbilt and Stony Brook despite trailing after two quarters of action. The win over Drexel marked the Orange s seventh game of the season that they have won by double-digits. Syracuse s largest margin of victory came on Dec. 6 when the Orange defeated Colgate by a score of (40 points). Several Syracuse players have received recognition for their efforts over the past few weeks. Freshman Digna Strautmane was tabbed the ACC Rookie of the Week for the week of Dec. 11. The Latvia native averaged 15.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game in two games, including a career-high 19 points against Drexel. Sophomore guard Tiana Mangakahia was named NetScouts Basketball International Player of the Week following a week where she averaged 14.5 points, 9.5 assists and 2.5 steals against Colgate and Drexel. She shot 50 percent from the field against Colgate. Head coach Quentin Hillsman eclipsed the 250 career wins mark with the Orange s victory over Colgate. He is the first head coach in Syracuse women s basketball history to record 250 career wins. A PERFECT TEN Syracuse has streaked all the way to 10-0 this season, one of three ACC teams and one of 11 teams in the nation who are still undefeated on the year. As a school, Syracuse was one of five schools whose men s (6-0) and women s (7-0) basketball teams went undefeated in November. This is just the third time in program history that the Orange have started the season 9-0. It s the best start for Syracuse since the season when the team won a program-best 12 straight games at the beginning of the year. Two of the three 9-0 starts came under the direction of Coach Hillsman. When starting the season 9-0, the Orange have posted a winning record in all three seasons. In it s first 9-0 year, the team went undefeated, recording a perfect 10-0 season. In , the team used its success at the beginning of the season to earn a postseason bid to the WNIT. The Orange faced defeat in the regional finals, falling to Michigan BLOCK PARTY Freshman Digna Strautmane has been one of Syracuse s most effective defensive players under the net this season. The Latvia native has tallied a block in every game this season and has notched four games with four blocks. Strautmane ranks 14th in the nation, 2nd in the ACC, for blocked shots with 27 on the season. She sits at 19th, also 2nd in the conference, for blocks per game, averaging 2.70 an outing. INFUSING TALENT The Orange roster is filled with new talent with the nine newcomers who ve seen court time already making an impact on the season. The new players account for 87.7 percent of Syracuse s scoring this season, led by Miranda Drummond (27.4 percent) and Tiana Mangakahia (23.8 percent). Two of the Syracuse newcomers, Drummond and Amaya Finklea- Guity are shooting above.500 on the season, notching a.526 and a.516 mark respectively. Six of the new faces are shooting above.400 this year, as well. Freshman Digna Strautmane leads the Orange in rebounds (85) and rebounds per game (8.5), whiile Mangakahia paces Syracuse in assists (113) and assists per game (11.3). Mangakahia has recorded eight double-doubles this season, good for first on the team and tied for fourth in the nation. 4 HEAD COACH QUENTIN HILLSMAN The Hillsman File Career Record/Yrs /12 Record at School/Yrs... Same 12th Overall Season 12th Season at Syracuse St. Mary s (Md.) 93 Head coach Quentin Hillsman has transformed the Syracuse University women s basketball program into a national championship contender. Hillsman took over a program that went in the three seasons prior to his appointment and has since guided the Orange to unprecedented heights. In his 11 seasons at the helm, Syracuse boasts an impressive résumé, which includes 10 consecutive postseason appearances, six trips to the NCAA Tournament, 12 all-conference selections, four All-Americans, and four WNBA Draft picks. Under Hillsman, the Orange own a overall record, averaging more than 21 victories per season. Hillsman is the all-time winningest coach in school history. The campaign put Syracuse on the national map, like never before. The Orange advanced to its first Sweet 16, Elite Eight, Final Four, and national final in their history. SU set program records with five wins against nationally ranked foes, 13 conference victories, 23 regular-season wins, and 30 overall victories. Following its run to the national final, Syracuse was ranked third in the final USA Today Coaches Poll. Hillsman wasted no time making an impact as the head coach of the Orange program. In only his second season in , he guided Syracuse to a 22-9 overall record and its fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament in school history. SU climbed into the national rankings for the first time in history, checking in as high as No. 21 in the country in the Associated Press Poll. Hillsman was recognized as the 2008 BIG EAST Coach of the Year. Hillsman has built a strong reputation as one of the top recruiters in women s collegiate basketball. 10 of the past 11 recruiting classes have been touted as top-25 classes nationally by the Dan Olson Collegiate Girls Basketball Report. In addition, the school s first four McDonald s All-Americans have all been recruited and played under Hillsman. A native of Suitland, Md., Hillsman graduated from St. Mary s College (Md.) in 1993 after a standout playing career with the Seahawks. He led the squad to two Capital Athletic Conference championships and one conference tournament title, earning all-conference accolades and setting the school s single-game and single-season assist records. Hillsman studied sport management at the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Ala. from , as well. He, his wife, Shandrist, and their sons, Kyan and Harlem, reside in Jamesville. With one of the best shooting teams in program history, according to Hillsman, the 3-point game is vital to Syracuse success this season. The Orange currently lead the ACC in 3-point field goals per game, averaging 9.9 per outing. The team has poured in 99 threes this season, good for 13th in the nation and second in the conference. In eight of the ten games in , Syracuse has attempted at least 30 3-point field goals, including a season-high 39 against Vanderbilt. Syracuse has poured in at least 10 3-pointers five times this year: 11 against Wisconsin, George Washington and Stony Brook, 12 against Vanderbilt and a season-high 13 against Colgate. Miranda Drummond paces the Orange with 28 threes this year, shooting.400 (28-of-70) from beyond the arc. Three Syracuse athletes have knocked down 20+ shots from the perimeter this year, Drummond (25), Gabrielle Cooper (25) and Isis Young (20). HILLSMAN MAKING HISTORY Prior to head coach Quentin Hillsman s appointment, Syracuse touted a (.480) overall record, three trips to the NCAA Tournament, and zero NCAA Tournament victories in 35 seasons. In the 23 seasons prior (the coaches rankings began during the season), the program only recorded eight wins against nationally-ranked foes. ORANGE ROOTS STRETCH THE GLOBE The Orange roster has an international flavor to it as members come from Australia (Tiana Mangakahia), Canada (Chelayne Bailey), France (Maeva Djaldi-Tabdi, Marie-Paule Foppossi), and Latvia (Digna Strautmane). Also, freshman guard Nikki Oppenheimer has played for the Puerto Rican junior national team. In addition, seven states are represented, including New York GAME-BY-GAME BREAKDOWN (Jasmine Nwajei, Miranda Drummond, Brandi Fowler, Marisa Romeo), Illinois (Gabrielle Cooper, Kiara Lewis, Oppenheimer), Connecticut (Desiree Elmore), Georgia (Abby Grant), Maryland (Raven Fox), Massachusetts (Amaya Finklea-Guity), New Jersey (Isis Young). TOUGH SLATE Syracuse will take on 14 opponents that participated in postseason play last year, including seven teams that earned an invitation to the 2017 NCAA Tournament. In non-league action, the Orange will meet Mississippi State in the Duel in the Desert in Las Vegas on Thursday, Dec. 21, in a game featuring the past two national runners-up. The Orange will kick off Atlantic Coast Conference competition at Notre Dame, the four-time defending ACC champion, on Thursday, Dec. 28. Syracuse will host Duke, Florida State, and Louisville, all of which participated in last year s national tournament. ORANGE SELECTED TO FINISH SEVENTH IN ACC The Orange were selected to finish seventh place in Atlantic Coast Conference by the Blue Ribbon Panel and league head coaches, the conference announced on Oct. 19 at its annual media day event. Since joining the ACC in , Syracuse touts a (.703) overall record in league games and has finished no lower than sixth place in the conference. The Orange placed third two seasons ago, recorded fifth-place showings in the and campaigns, and finished sixth last year. Notre Dame was selected to win the league for the fifth straight season by the Blue Ribbon Panel and head coaches. Louisville, Duke, and Florida State round out the top four in both preseason polls, respectively. Duke guard Lexie Brown was named the Preseason ACC Player of the Year by the Blue Ribbon Panel, while Louisville junior guard Asia Durr was tabbed as the conference player of the year by the coaches. HOME COURT ADVANTAGE Syracuse holds one of the strongest home court advantages in the nation. Prior to its loss against Notre Dame on Feb. 19, the team had won 18 consecutive home games, setting a new program record. Syracuse won 16 straight home contests from March 1, 2010 Jan. 8, Under head coach Quentin Hillsman, the Orange own an 86-4 overall record against non-conference opposition at home. Prior to its loss against Arizona State on Dec. 12, 2015, SU had won 72 non-conference home games in-a-row, which was the longest active streak in the nation.
