2 December 17, 2016 LAST MEETING - NC State vs. Tulane NEW ORLEANS The NC State women s basketball team (9-3) dropped a difficult road contest at Tulane (6-4) Saturday afternoon, falling at Devlin Fieldhouse. Despite leading for 29:13 of the game s 40 minutes, the Wolfpack let a late lead slip away during a fourth quarter in which Tulane outscored NC State while shooting 9-15 from the field and 5-7 from distance. NC State held the 38th-best shooting team in the country in check for three quarters, but an explosive final stanza from Tulane proved to be the difference in the contest. Chelsea Nelson led the way offensively for the Wolfpack with her fifth double-double (16 points, 11 rebounds) of the season. She was joined in double figures by freshman Aislinn Konig (14 points, 4-7 shooting from range). Morgan Kolby scored 27 points (6-8 shooting from distance) to lead Tulane. She was joined in double figures by teammate Leslie Vorpahl (15 points). TRIPLE DOUBLE TERRITORY With 12 rebounds, nine assists, and eight points, redshirt sophomore point guard Kaila Ealey nearly notched just the third triple-double in program history in the win at Old Dominion. Tynesha Lewis ( ) owns both triple-doubles in the 43-year history of the program. WHAT A PERFORMANCE Redshirt junior guard Kiara Leslie tied a career high with 22 points in the win over UNC Asheville, and how she achieved it may be the most impressive part of the feat. The Holly Springs, N.C., native went a perfect 8-8 from the field, including a half court buzzer beater at the end of the third quarter, to tie for the second best single-game shooting performance in program history. LISA LESLIE AWARD WATCH LIST Senior center Akela Maize of the NC State women s basketball team has been named to the 20-player watch list for the inaugural Lisa Leslie Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and Women s Basketball Coaches Association announced Nov. 10. Named after the three-time All-American and 1994 National Player of the Year, the Lisa Leslie Award recognizes the top centers in women s college basketball. The selection committee for the award is comprised of top women s college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, sports information directors, and Hall of Famers. By mid-february the list of 20 will be trimmed to 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. Leslie and the Hall of Fame s selection committee. Fans will also have the opportunity to vote for their favorite finalist at HoopHallAwards.com. STRONG NONCONFERENCE SCHEDULE NC State has scheduled a strong non-conference slate for the season. The Wolfpack s 13 opponents have an average RPI of 140 from the end of the season with seven having qualified for the postseason. WOLFPACK QUICK FACTS (PRIOR TO START OF SEASON) -Replacing the seniors. NC State graduated four seniors and 43.5 points per game from its season starting lineup. The senior class posted an impressive career record of during its time in Raleigh, winning the most games since the PACK FACTS seniors finished with an identical career record. -Improvement in the post. Seniors Chelsea Nelson and Akela Maize will be big factors in the team s success during the season. Nelson has dramatically improved each season and had a career year as a junior last season, averaging 11.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while shooting a team high.567 from the field. Maize has also seen her role develop throughout her career and had some of the best games of her career in wins over No. 2/2 Notre Dame and at No. 9/7 Louisville last season. -Recently renovated Reynolds Coliseum. The season was the first season back in the renovated Reynolds Coliseum, which was offline during the season to undergo an extensive $35 million renovation. NC State had great success in the building last season, going 14-2 on Kay Yow Court. Wolfpack fans turned out in large numbers (2,912 per game) last season, creating a unique home court advantage in the reconfigured seating bowl of 5,500. The momentum from last season s success in the regular season and NCAA Tournament has translated into some of the strongest ticket sales figures in program history, leading to what will be another strong home atmosphere in The coach. NC State head coach Wes Moore remains one of the most successful active NCAA women s basketball coaches in the country as he enters his 29th season (fifth at NC State). Moore was named the 2017 ACC Coach of the Year last season, claiming the award for the first time in the 43-year history of women s basketball at NC State. He is during his time with the Wolfpack, has posted a ACC record, and has led the team to two NCAA Tournament appearances and a postseason invite in all four completed seasons. For his career, Moore is and has 23 seasons of 20+ wins to his name. -Multiple newcomers. NC State welcomes two freshmen (guard Kai Crutchfield and post Kayla Jones) and three transfers (guard Armani Hawkins, guard Kiara Leslie, and guard Grace Hunter) to its roster this season. Two Hawkins (Arizona State) and Leslie (Maryland) will be able to play during the season. The third: Hunter (Charlotte) is already proving to be a terrific addition to the team s preparation during practices, as she earned First Team All-CUSA honors last season while averaging 17.2 points and 8.6 rebounds per game for the 49ers.

He has led the Wolfpack to a (.625) record in ACC games, a league that consistently ranks among the top conferences in NCAA Division I basketball. Three of Moore s four seasons have included significantly surpassing preseason league projections and two have concluded in fourth-place finishes in the 15-member league. All four of his seasons in Raleigh have been winning seasons, and three have included 20 wins or more. In his first season at NC State ( ), Moore led the Wolfpack to a 25-8 record, a fourth-place finish in the ACC standings, and an NCAA Tournament appearance. For his efforts, he was named the ESPNW ACC Coach of the Year. After an campaign in and a season in , Moore led the Wolfpack to the NCAA Tournament Round of 32 in with an impressive 23-9 record (12-4 ACC).
