2 G l N H p s NOT[S & OTH[R STUFF-PAC[ 2 Golden Gophers Hit The Road: The Golden Gophers will hit the road this week for a pair of tough road games vs. Rhode sland and Nebraska. First up is a nationally-televised game (ESPN2) with Rhode sland at the Providence Civic Center on Tuesday at : p.m. Following that game, the Golden Gophers will return home for a day and a half before departing for Lincoln, Neb., to play the Cornhuskers on Saturday night. Gophers Bounce Back: The Maroon and Gold bounced back from the pre-final exams road loss to Alabama by destroying St. John's -9 in front of,5 Williams Arena faithful on Sunday. Minnesota flew out of the blocks jumping to a 25-4 at the 9:48 mark of the first half. Minnesota cruised the rest of the way holding St. John's to just 8 second half points. The 9 points was the fewest by a Minnesota opponent since the Maroon and Gold held Northern llinois to points in a 5- win on Dec., 99. t was only the third time in the past 2 years that Minnesota had held an opponent to less than 4 points in a game. Defense, Defense, Defense: The Golden Gophers stifling defense thus far this season has been the key to their wins. They have held their opponents to an average of 59. points per game and a 4. percent field goal percentage. Their opponents have shot 2.9 percent from three-point range and have been outrebounded by Minnesota an average of Minnesota was - last year when they held their opponents to less than points. This year, the Golden Gophers are - when they hold their opponents to points or less. n two games at Williams Arena this season, the Golden Gophers have allowed an average of 4. points and scored an average of 89.. St. John's Recap: The Golden Gophers were very sharp after having days off for final exams as they exploded in the first half and put the game out of reach. n the first game at Williams Arena in three weeks, the hometown heroes brought the fans to their feet often with offense and defense as they outscored the Redmen 25-4 in the first -plus minutes of the half. Sam Jacobson (Jr., Cottage Grove, Minn.) and Eric Harris (Jr., Bronx, N.Y.) led the balanced attack as four players scored in double figures and four others had seven or more points. Jacobson had a stellar game as he notched his first double-double of the season and the sixth of his career with points and 2 rebounds. He added six assists and two steals with no turnovers to his scoring line. He leads the team in scoring at.4 points per game and is third in rebounding at. per contest. Harris had another fine outing as well, the MVP of the San Juan Shootout, he bounced back from a tough game at Alabama by scoring points, tallying five assists and five steals without a turnover in another impressive showing. Bobby Jackson (Sr., Salisbury, S.C.} had points and three assists and John Thomas (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn.) scored nine points and pulled down nine rebounds in 8 minutes of action. Balance is the Key: Coach Haskins has said from the start of fall camp that he expects to use nine to players and wants them to have significant minutes every night. That has been the case this year as nine players are averaging in double figures for minutes played, with Russ Archambault (Fort Yates, N.D.) just below that mark at. minutes per game. n addition, Minnesota has four players averaging in double figures for scoring (Sam Jacobson-.4, Eric Harris-., Bobby Jackson-2., John Thomas-.9). The Point Man: Junior Eric Harris continues to do an excellent job of running the Minnesota offense and playing stellar defense. He is second in scoring at. points per game and has an excellent 2- assist-to-turnover ratio. He has led the team in r r--. ' On the win over St. John's "As a coach it is very gratifying. t makes you feel good to take what you do in practice into the game. Execution must be there, and this ball club executed and carried out the game plan to perfection tonight." A On Sam Jacobson's Play "Sam stepped up big time tonight with W Counney not playing. He had 2 rebounds, six assists and no turnovers while scoring points. He is getting better each game and has unlimited potential as a basketball player. " On Eric Harris' Play "Eric is playing the best basketball of his career and was clearly our best player in San Juan and very deserving of the Most Valuable Player Award. He is our best shooter, is running our offense with great confidence and is playing excellent defense. He has really been the key to our early season success" On John Thomas' Play "John is the real thing. He is playing with great confidence and poise. He is a man in the blocks and it is very difficult for most post players to match up with him. He is also our leader emotionally on the court and sets the tone with his great work ethic."..

3 N MOTES & OTHER STUFF-PAGE scoring in three games (West Virginia-, Clemson-, St. John's-) and hit the most important shot of his career when he nailed a field goal with four seconds remaining to beat Creighton 4- and put the Golden Gophers in the championship game of the San Juan Shootout. A big surprise with his outstanding offensive play this season, he is one of the best shooters on the team at 54.2 percent (2-59). On defense he leads the team with 8 steals and is averaging a team-high 2.9 minutes per game. He faces a pair of very tough defensive matchups this week in Rhode sland's Tyson Wheeler and Nebraska's Tyronn Lue. They are two of the quickest point guards Harris will face all year and they both can score (Wheeler-. ppg, Lue-.9 ppg. Mr. Windex: John Thomas has kept the glass very clean this year for the Golden Gophers and is having his finest season ever. He is averaging 9. rebounds per game and.9 points per game. He leads the team with a.5 field goal percentage and is fourth on the team with steals. The team captain and a physically punishing player, he is a force in the low post area. He took St. John's All-Big East performer Zendon Hamilton right out of his game and paved the way for the Minnesota victory. Tarver Has Big Night in First Start: Sophomore forward Miles Tarver (Oakland, Calif.) had his best night as a Golden Gopher vs. St. John's when he started in place of the suspended Courtney James and had career highs in points (8), rebounds (sixtied), and minutes (2). A tireless worker, Tarver is coming into his own as a rebounder. He is averaging 4. rebounds per game while playing an average of 4. minutes. Tough Stretch Part 2: The Golden Gophers are in the middle of another tough stretch in the schedule. Minnesota played St. John's Sunday, today they get on a plane to Rhode sland to play the Rams on Tuesday. Following that game the team will return to Minneapolis on Wednesday (2/8) before leaving for Lincoln, Neb,. Friday (22) for a r , Media Luncheons Set The 99-9 basketball media luncheon schedule has been set for the year beginning with the first Tuesday in January. The luncheons will be held at 2: in the Williams Arena Club Room. Parking will be available on the south tarmac of the arena as in the past. Player interviews will begin at 2 p.m. following the conclusion of the luncheon. Player interviews nrust be requested 24 hours in advance. Coach Haskins will do all of his interviews at the luncheon. He is one of the first players off the bench and he ignites the offense when he enters the game. Fifth on the team in scoring with an 8. points per game average, he has a 5. field goal percentage (2-45) and is second on the team with a 55. mark (5-9) for three-pointers. "Sir Charles" of Kentucky: Sophomore Charles Thomas (Harlan, Ky.) has tossed aside any of the physical problems he had last year and is having a very good season. He is averaging. points per game off the bench and is averaging 4. minutes per game. An excellent shooter, he leads the team in three-point field goal percentage. (-5), as well as from the charity stripe 8. (-5). Sir Charles was Mr. Basketball in Kentucky and is just regaining the form that garnered him that coveted award. Shooting Numbers: Minnesota has shot the ball very well this season overall with a 4.9 field goal percentage. The solid shooting is due to great inside scoring by Thomas, James and Jacobson. The team's three-point percentage has been inconsistent and dropped to.9 percent (29-9) after going -for- against St. John's. From the charity stripe Minnesota is hitting at a 4. mark. Minnesota is - when they shoot 4 percent or better or outshoot their opponents. Minnesota's frontcourt of John Thomas, Courtney James, Sam Jacobson, Trevor Winter, Quincy Lewis, Kyle Sanden and Kevin Loge is ranked in the top 2 by the Sporting News as well. Jackson Named Preseason Player of the Year: Senior guard Bobby Jackson was named the Big Ten preseason Player of the Year by the Sporting News. The senior averaged 5. points per game over the final games when Minnesota posted a 9-4 record. That average includes a three-point outing vs. Penn State when he played just five minutes because of the flu. Court Dawg Named the Top Returning Rebounder n Big Ten: Sophomore forward Courtney James, who finished second in the Big Ten in rebounding last year, was named the conference's top rebounder by Sporting News Named to several preseason all-conference teams by various publications, the 2-pound forward will be a big presence in the blocks for Minnesota. Last year he was the only freshman to win Big Ten Player of the Week honors when he posted consecutive double-doubles for points and rebounds vs. Wisconsin and Michigan State. He has a 5-8 record and a 2-2 career coaching record. He is now tied for third in length of tenure with O.B. Cowles (948-59) and Jim Dutcher (95-8). Dr. L.J. Cooke leads the list with 2 seasons (89-924), while Dave MacMillan is second with 8 seasons (92-42, ). Haskins' wins at UM puts him fourth behind Cooke (244), MacMillan (9), and Dutcher (9). Loge Begins Limited Practice: Freshman forward/center Kevin Loge's injured fingers are healing nicely, according to the medical staff and he began practicing on a limited basis this week. Loge injured the two smallest fingers on his left hand prior to the start of the season when his shotgun discharged while training his dog for the hunting season. The two fingers were repaired and sewn together to enhance tissue growth. The fingers have been separated and the healing process is progressing on schedule.
