Poised For A Title Run After six straight appearances in the NCAA Championships and four trips to the Final Four in the last six seasons, the Duke field hockey team is ready to break through the glass ceiling and earn the program s first national championship. Head coach Beth Bozman enters her seventh season at the helm of the Blue Devils, coming off a memorable year in which she won her 300th career game and was inducted into the NFHCA Hall of Fame after the season in a ceremony in Philadelphia. As a team, the Blue Devils will be looking to build on a 15-6 campaign in 2008 that resulted in the squad s 10th overall NCAA Championships appearance and sixth Elite Eight in the last seven seasons. Duke knocked off six ranked opponents during the year, and advanced to the second-round of postseason play with a firstround win over UConn. The team was then halted in the Elite Eight by the eventual national champion Maryland Terrapins, despite netting five goals in the game and outscoring the Terps 4-3 in the second frame. But the Blue Devils certainly showed their ability to play with the best of the best in 2008, as they were the only team to defeat Maryland during the regular-season with a 3-2 road upset in October in College Park. Welcoming in seven freshmen to the roster with a strong mix of success at the high school and international levels, while bringing back four players as sophomores who earned starting roles as rookies, the Blue Devils will again be a young and vibrant squad. Duke will also enjoy the leadership of returning captain Lauren Miller in addition to first-time captains Sarah Schoffstall and Amie Survilla. In all, the team returns eight starters a strong nucleus from last year. The rest of the Blue Devil lineup includes players with experience on national teams and with HPTC, which allows highlevel athletes to compete with and against the best players in the U.S. The Captains Miller, who captained the team in 2008, will be joined by senior classmate Survilla and junior teammate Schoffstall as tri-captains for A staple of the Duke defensive line, Miller helped the Blue Devils limit opponents to just 35 goals all of last season, an average of only 1.67 scores per game. A vocal leader on the field, she helped bring out the best in her teammates. Taking the reigns for the first time in her career will be Schoffstall, who was a member of the NFHCA National Academic squad in 2008 and led by example each and every day in practice with her strong work ethic and dedication to her teammates and to Duke field hockey. Survilla, meanwhile, has been a fixture of the Duke lineup since her freshman season and will now be counted on to lead the 2009 squad. The Players The Blue Devils return 12 letterwinners and nine starters from the 2008 slate, losing just three seniors. But those three holes will take time to fill, as Duke field hockey suffers the loss of All-Americas Laura Suchoski and Marian Dickinson (who will stay with the squad as an undergraduate assistant this season) as well as veteran forward Ashley Pultorak. Suchoski was the lifeblood of the squad during her tenure as a Blue Devil, earning countless awards and sparking the team from her spot in the midfield. She leaves Duke as the only player in the program s history to have earned first team All-America honors three times for a career, doing so consecutively from Dickinson leaves the Duke program tied for the thirdmost goals in DUFH history and also third in career points. Pultorak was often the Blue Devils first off the bench in 2008 and contributed on the attacking end throughout her career. These vacancies will give the returnees as well as the seven incoming players a chance to step in and continue the Duke field hockey tradition of success at the national level. The Forwards With two of the Blue Devils top three goal scorers from 2008 making their way back to the field for the upcoming campaign, the Duke offense is in good shape. Led by senior Amie Survilla, who scored 16 goals last year, and Susan Ferger, who had 11, the attack has a solid core with the chance for the newcomers to step in. The Blue Devils also bring in a pair of rookies in Maartje van Rijswijk and Chelsea Amsley who finished their senior prep seasons with 35+ goals to their names, as well as Mary Nielsen who led her team in goals in three of her four years. Meanwhile, Schoffstall comes back to the forward line after dishing out three assists as a sophomore Team Captains (L-R): Amie Survilla, Lauren Miller, and Sarah Schoffstall The Midfield With the loss of Suchoski, the midfield will be looking for a new sparkplug but will have plenty of resources to draw from as rising sophomores Megan Deakins, Tara Jennings, and Rhian Jones are all two-way players. That trio each had solid contributions on the offensive end as freshmen and will look to , 2004, 2005 & 2006 Final Four

make a deeper impact in Deakins tallied seven goals as a freshman, while Jones and Jennings teamed up for two goals and six assists as rookies in Incoming freshman Devon Gagliardi is a strong midfielder from Wyoming Seminary the same high school that Suchoski attended in Pennsylvania. The Blue Devils turned in the fifthmost assists (56) in school history in 2008 and the fifth-most assists per game (2.67) as well, plays that started in the middle and contributed to a Duke attack that scored the sixth-most goals (68) in program history. At the same time, the defense limited opponents to only 1.67 goals per game, with the midfielders bridging the gap between those highly successful ends of the spectrum. The Defense With veteran Miller returning, the defensive unit is in good hands. Additionally, the Blue Devils bring back sophomore Stefanie Fee, who turned in a solid freshman season in 2008, and welcome freshman Molly Johnson, who has the talent to make an impact in her first season. Duke also brings in freshman Abby Hassinger, an All-America who was her team s Defensive MVP as a senior in high school, to add to the squad s depth. The 2008 Blue Devils were stingy in the back and in defending penalty corners, and will look to repeat that in The Goalkeepers With 2008 starter Samantha Nelson back for the Blue Devils, the team has a comfort level and familiarity with the player between the pipes. Nelson logged over 1,200 minutes in the cage last season and stopped over 60 percent of shots sent her way while registering five shutouts. The Blue Devils also bring in Micaela Paterson, a freshman who brings strong international playing experience to the squad, as a member of the South Africa U-21 team. She will be vying for playing time in the cage. The Coaching Staff Behind one of the most successful coaches at the Division I level in Bozman, who enters season No. 7 at Duke and needs just two more wins to reach 100 in Durham, the Blue Devils are guided by the duo of Jarred Martin and Caitlin Williams, who bring quality playing experience as The 2008 Blue Devils celebrate Bozman s 300th career win last season well as leadership to the staff. Martin, who helped Team USA to the silver medal at the 2009 Pan American Cup in Chile this past March, enters his third season with the Blue Devils. In addition to his international field hockey success as a player, Martin brings coaching experience as a member of the South HPTC staff and FUTURES field hockey. Williams is coming off her first season of coaching in 2008, a year in which she worked primarily with the goalkeepers and a defensive unit that posted the third-most shutouts in the ACC with six, and posted the third-best goals-against average (1.67) in the conference. That came after a stellar four-year career as a goalkeeper at Duke, where she earned All-America, All-Region, and All-ACC accolades in her own playing career. The change to the coaching staff this year comes with Dickinson, who joins the staff and changes roles from player to coach. The former All-America will act as an undergraduate assistant while continuing her studies at Duke University. Dickinson will make a seamless transition to the coaching realm after serving as team captain in 2008 and proving a leadership that never went unnoticed. The Schedule The 2009 Duke field hockey schedule features eight home games to be played at Jack Katz Stadium, including the annual Champions Challenge tournament and six contests against 2008 NCAA Tournament participants. It s a competitive and challenging schedule that includes all the elements to prepare us for a postseason run, said Bozman, who again has one of the toughest schedules in the nation on her docket. In addition to the top competition offered by the teams in the ACC, we ll be challenged by nationally-ranked opponents from the Big Ten, Big East, America East, and the CAA. The Champions Challenge tournament will give the Blue Devils a chance to square off against non-conference opponents Louisville and Michigan State or Delaware, in addition to showcasing the team s newly renovated and dedicated playing facilities on campus. Besides the ever-challenging ACC which will feature home and away contests against UNC, Duke s non-conference ledger includes the likes of Drexel, Old Dominion, Boston University, Ohio, and Ohio State. After playing several home games at the beginning of the season including three in a row between Sept , Duke will close out the 2009 campaign with five straight road games Oct , then embarking on ACC Championships competition Nov. 5-8 on the campus of the University of Virginia. 2003, 2004, 2005 & 2006 Final Four 3

Bozman s team advanced to four consecutive Final Fours from , finishing as the national runner-up in three of those occasions ( ). The 2008 season, Bozman s sixth at Duke, was a special one for the head coach, who earned the 300th win of her decorated career when the Blue Devils defeated Longwood by a score of 4-0 on Oct. 26. She became just the ninth coach at the Division-I level to reach that plateau. Bozman was later inducted into the NFHCA Postseason Record Years Postseason Record (5) ECAC 5-3 (1991 and 1992 ECAC Champions) , (14) NCAA (1996, 1998, 2003, 2004 & 2005 National Runners-up) 18 times (.639) Bozman recorded her 300th win in a home victory over Longwood on October 26, Hall of Fame Jan. 18, 2009 in Philadelphia. Entering the 2009 slate, Bozman needs just two more wins to reach 100 at Duke. Building on a successful 15-year career at Princeton, Bozman came to Durham in 2003 and immediately led the Blue Devils to four consecutive Final Four appearances, making it just the sixth school in the history of Division I field hockey to accomplish such a feat. In 2005, Duke became one of six schools to advance to three straight Final Fours, with Duke becoming the second school that Bozman has guided to three straight Final Fours after having done so with Princeton from Bozman currently owns an overall coaching ledger of and a mark of at Duke. She has coached 10 conference Players of the Year, including Duke s first ever in the Atlantic Coast Conference in Katie Grant (2005). Added to her list of individual accomplishments for her players are seven Ivy League Rookies of the Year, seven Honda Broderick Award nominees, 23 first team All-Americas, 27 All-Ivy League first team selections, and 16 All-ACC picks, while her teams have had a 100 percent graduation rate. A master motivator and teacher, Bozman has coached at least two players to All-America status in each of her six years as head coach of the Blue Devil squad, something that has only occurred in one other year in Duke field hockey history (1999) prior to her arrival. A school-record four members were named to the team in 2005, including the first two selections to the first team in Blue Devil history. The 2006 team repeated that feat with four All-America selections, including a school-record three first-team picks. In 2007, Laura Suchoski became the first player to garner first team All- America honors in two straight seasons and continued that run in 2008 as she was one of three Blue Devils to receive the honor. The 2008 season saw the Blue Devils, with four freshmen in the starting lineup, log a 15-6 overall record, advancing to the team s 10th overall and seventh consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championships. There, the Blue Devils downed Connecticut in the first round before falling to the eventual national champions, the Maryland Terrapins, 8-5 in the second round. That game marked Duke s sixth Elite Eight in seven years. In 2007, an equally young Duke team compiled an overall ledger of 11-9 while facing one of the toughest schedules in the country. Bozman led the Blue Devils to their sixth straight and ninth overall NCAA Tournament bid. The 2006 season saw Bozman s Blue Devil team amass a record of 16-6 and reach the Final Four to become the only Duke team to accomplish the feat of advancing to four consecutive Final Fours. The season was highlighted by 16 wins over nationally ranked foes, including a 2-0 triumph over then-no. 1 Maryland, as the eventual national champion Terrapins suffered their first loss of the season on their own turf. At season s end, Amy Stopford became the seventh player overall and second at Duke that Bozman has coached to be named a finalist for the Honda Award in field hockey, making her a nominee for the Honda Broderick Cup, given to the top female athlete in NCAA competition. In 2005, Hilary Linton was also a Honda Award finalist. The 2005 squad went 18-5 overall, amassing an identical mark of the previous year s team. When four starters left for the Junior World Cup in Chile in September, Bozman exhibited her expert coaching skills, leading a team of 14 players, including five freshmen, to three wins in four games against nationally ranked teams, including a victory at rival North Carolina s home field. Duke had the most players , 2004, 2005 & 2006 Final Four

Bozman was inducted into the NFHCA Hall of Fame on January 18, 2009, in Philadelphia. in Division I competing in the Junior World Cup. In the NCAA Tournament, the Blue Devils won a pair of double-overtime games to advance out of the Princeton regional and defeated Wake Forest in the semifinal game to advance to the finals. The 2005 success came on the heels of two other impressive seasons under Bozman. The year before, she guided the Blue Devils to their second straight Final Four appearance and an 18-5 record. For the second consecutive year in 2004, Duke also set new school records for goals (117), assists (90) and points (324). Bozman s squad posted eight wins over ranked opponents, including a 2-1 victory in Chapel Hill over top-ranked North Carolina to advance to the NCAA Final Four. In 2003, Bozman led Duke to its best season up to that point in program history. The Blue Devils won a school-record 20 games, scored 106 goals and reached the NCAA Tournament national championship game for the first time in school history. Duke won 12 games against nationally ranked competition, including a three-game stretch that featured wins over then-no. 3 Maryland, then-no. 1 Wake Forest and then-no. 2 North Carolina. In addition to the numerous accolades received by her players in 2003, Bozman was named Woman of the Year by the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. In addition to earning the admiration and loyalty of her players, Bozman has garnered respect at the national level. She has been named the Regional Coach of the Year three times and was named the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 1996, when she guided Princeton to its first NCAA Championship game. In 15 seasons at Princeton ( ), Bozman crafted a program that continually dominated the Ivy League and was consistently in the middle of the national title race. Compiling a record of (.715), Bozman went in the Ivy League and her 1998 Tiger team is the only Ivy League squad to advance to a national championship game. Before coaching at Princeton, Bozman spent a year at James Madison as the assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach before taking over the head coaching duties for both sports at Hofstra. In 1987 she led the Flying Dutchwomen to a 15-4 record and a No. 18 national ranking. Bozman graduated from Trenton State College (now the College of New Jersey) in 1976 with a bachelor s degree in health and physical education. She earned her master s degree in 1981 after a one-year stint as a graduate assistant at Old Dominion. Bozman returned to Trenton State as an assistant coach from , during which time the field hockey team won two Division III national championships and was runner-up twice. Bozman is a past president of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association and currently serves on the South Region All-America committee. Actively involved with the U.S. Field Hockey Association, Bozman coached the U.S. Under-16 Team in The Netherlands in March of Marian Dickinson Undergraduate Assistant An addition to the DUFH coaching staff this season comes with Marian Dickinson, who will make a seamless transition from All-America midfielder to undergraduate assistant beginning in In her final season in a Blue Devil uniform in 2008, Dickinson was a captain and earned her third All-America honor and third All-South Region award. She finished her career tied for third on Duke s all-time career goals list with 58, while her 86 career games played and 151 career points each ranked third in school history. Jared Martin Assistant Coach Jarred Martin enters his third season as an assistant coach on the Blue Devil field hockey staff, having come to Duke for the campaign after serving as an assistant coach at Skidmore College. While at Skidmore College, Martin helped lead the Thoroughbreds to three Liberty League titles and two runner-up finishes, as well as five NCAA Tournament appearances, one of which included a trip to the Final Four. Martin has been a member of the U.S. national squad since 2000, and was also a part of the Under-18 and Under-21 national teams. This past January, Martin received his Level II Accreditation from USA Field Hockey. Martin received a B.S. in Biochemistry in 2005, graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University of Albany. Caitlin Williams Assistant Coach Caitlin Williams joined the Duke field hockey staff as an assistant coach for the season after a stellar four-year playing career as a Blue Devil. Her first year in the coaching ranks resulted in a 16-5 record, the team s 10th overall trip to the NCAA Championships, and its sixth Elite Eight in seven years. Working primarily with the goalkeepers and defensive unit, Williams guided a Duke defensive unit that posted the third-most shutouts in the ACC with six, and posted the thirdbest goals-against average (1.67) in the conference. As Duke s starting goalkeeper for the 2006 and 2007 seasons, Williams secured an ACC-leading 121 saves her senior year to go along with a save percentage of.738. The Greenland, N.H., native closed her career with 238 saves, a mark which ties for fifth on the Duke career charts, and had 15 shutouts to her credit over the course of her tenure on the field. Williams received second team All-America honors in 2007 in addition to her first All-ACC nod and her second straight All-South Region honor. She also excelled academically, as a member of the NFHCA National Academic Squad in 2004 and a member of the ACC All-Academic Team in her final two campaigns. 17 Consistency. It is the mark of true excellence in any endeavor. However, in today s intercollegiate athletics, competition has become so balanced and so competitive that it is virtually impossible to maintain a high level of consistency. Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the odds. Now in its 55th year of competition, the ACC has long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate conferences in the nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numbers support it. Since the league s inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured 109 national championships, including 57 in women s competition and 52 in men s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC student-athletes 139 times in men s competition and 86 times in women s action. Field hockey in the ACC has experienced tremendous success since its introduction as a conference sport in The league has established itself as a national presence in the sport, both on and off the field, over the past 28 seasons. The ACC has had approximately 380 players recognized on the NFHCA National Academic Squad for their accomplishments in the classroom. The conference has also produced close to 230 NFHCA All-Americans, including Maryland s Kim Turner, the league s first four-time recipient who helped the Terrapins capture their first-ever national title in Eight ACC players have garnered the nation s top individual accolade, while a league coach has been honored as national coach of the year 14 times, including two-time Honda Award winner Paula Infante and six-time NFHCA National Coach of the Year Missy Meharg The Blue Devil s Laura Suchoski and Marian Dickinson were named Senior All-Stars in 2008 from Maryland. In 2007, five ACC teams earned berths into the NCAA Tournament for the third year in a row and just the fourth time in league history. Last season marked the 12th straight year the ACC was represented by multiple teams. Maryland became the first school to bring home the national crown for the ACC in 1987, when the Terrapins defeated North Carolina in overtime by a 2-1 score in what would become the first of seven All-ACC battles in the NCAA finals. At least one ACC team has appeared in the national semifinals in each of the last 19 campaigns, while 2007 marked the ninth consecutive season an ACC school made an appearance in the title match. ACC teams have combined for an NCAAbest 13 titles in 25 appearances, including the last six and 11 of the last 15. The league is the only conference among all three divisions to boast six consecutive national crowns ( ) in field hockey with Maryland and Wake Forest having combined for five titles prior to North Carolina s title run in North Carolina and Maryland are one of three teams in the country to have captured at least four NCAA field hockey championships, as Maryland claimed its fifth overall title in 2006 before North Carolina collected its fifth national championship in Old Dominion leads the nation with nine titles.s In addition, North Carolina and Wake Forest are among the few elite programs to have won national titles three consecutive times. The Tar Heels were the first ACC team to three-peat from , with Wake Forest accomplishing the feat from It s pretty simple - playing the ACC schedule is like advancing to the Final Four every weekend. Top competition, top pressure, top results. We love it! The 2008 Duke Field Hockey Team Duke Coach Beth Bozman 2003, 2004, 2005 & 2006 Final Four 17

Sarah Schoffstall at a school in Vietnam Studying abroad was, without a doubt, one of the best choices I ve made while at Duke. Duke Summer in Berlin has given me the opportunity to see new parts of the world, meet new people, and grow as a person. Here in Berlin, I will be taking classes that are unlike any other I ve taken. No classrooms or textbooks are needed because the city is my classroom, and I have an incredible opportunity to get hands-on experience in a place that is so rich with history. This is a life-changing experience, and the memories will remain with me forever. -Senior Amie Survilla Amie Survilla in front of the Berlin Wall I knew that I wanted to participate in Coach for College as soon as I learned it existed. As a studentathlete, the opportunities to travel abroad, particularly for a service trip, are few and far between, but that was what made this trip so special. I will never forget the memories of coaching and teaching the Vietnamese middle schoolers because of how much the experience opened my mind and horizons to different ways of life. 2003, 2004, 2005 & 2006 Final Four 27 -Junior Sarah Schoffstall

Duke University is an independent, comprehensive, non-sectarian research university that traces its roots to 1838, when it was established as Union Institute in Randolph County, North Carolina. Through the support of the Duke family and others, in 1892 the school renamed Trinity College was moved to Durham on what is now East Campus. In 1924, Trinity College, a long-time beneficiary of Duke family generosity, became the nucleus of Duke University. With $21 million provided by James B. Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke and the donation of land by Julian S. Carr, West Campus was created and East Campus was rebuilt. Today, the Georgian architecture of East Campus and the Gothic-styled West Campus are part of a 9,350-acre campus that includes two undergraduate schools Trinity college of Arts and Sciences and the Pratt School of Engineering as well as eight graduate and professional schools, the world-renowned Duke University Medical Center, the 7,900-acre Duke Forest, and the beautiful 55-acre Sarah P. Duke Gardens. Duke offers one of the most dynamic undergraduate academic experiences in the world. There are many different choices with majors, minors, certificate programs, Focus clusters and first-year seminars. The Duke education is structured and flexible, classic and contemporary, theoretical and realistic. Come with an open and curious mind, a readiness to challenge and to be challenged, and a willingness to take chances , 2004, 2005 & 2006 Final Four

Located in the heart of North Carolina s rolling Piedmont region, Durham stands out as a gem among southern cities. Through the years, the city has evolved from a tobacco and textile town into an international center for medicine, scholarship, biotechnology and electronics. Founded in 1853, Durham is widely recognized for its diversity. Originally a manufacturing center, the city now is known for excellence in medicine, education, research and industry. The wide range of activities available in the area lends the city a multifaceted appeal that strikes even first-time visitors. Durham has a natural appeal as well, characterized by 98,000 acres of hardwood and evergreen forests including the only remaining old growth Piedmont bottomland forests and 7,800 acres of cropland. Hills and dales, meandering rivers and streams, several lakes, 26 rare plant species and several rare species of birds and animals can also be found here. With 187,000 residents in the one-city county, Durham is the fourth-largest city in North Carolina. It is ideally located on the large and small scale. Within the immediate area it stands as the pinnacle of the Triangle region of North Carolina, a metropolitan population of 1,000,000 people that includes Chapel Hill to the south and west and Raleigh, the state capital, to the south and east. On a regional level, this area is the primary center of culture, sports, education and government between Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. With excellent sports and cultural activities in the area, Durham is a fun place to be. People from all walks of life academic, industrial, professional, agricultural blend to provide a warm, rich sense of hospitality and diversity. 2003, 2004, 2005 & 2006 Final Four 29
