Daily Clips 12/10/12 New Station Square stadium to become ice rink for a month As skaters go 'round, they can watch walls go up at Highmark Stadium By Diana Nelson Jones / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Highmark Stadium, the future home of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds soccer team and Pittsburgh Passion women's football team, will open as an ice skating and hockey venue called Penguins Pond at 2 p.m. Friday. The Station Square facility will provide play for youth and adult hockey and public skating through Jan. 13. It is a collaboration of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Riverhounds, Highmark Stadium and 84 Lumber. David Morehouse, CEO and president of the Penguins, said, "It will be a spectacular venue, giving kids and families a chance to skate together outdoors while enjoying the breathtaking Pittsburgh skyline." The rink is constructed atop a protective turf surface, and skaters will witness construction progress through the winter. Riverhounds CEO Jason Kutney said the stadium will be complete in time for the Riverhounds' and Passion's first home games in March. The site occupies the former Trib Total Media Amphitheatre at Station Square and has been six years in the making from the earliest plans. Mr. Kutney, a midfielder on the Riverhounds, said the foundation, underground plumbing and electrical work is done; steel will be erected next week to begin construction of the building's elevation. "The body and skin of the building will be completed in the first couple weeks of January," he said. "All the other components -- the lighting, grandstands, ancillary buildings under the grandstands are pretty much in the final stages." The $10.2 million stadium with 3,500 seats will upgrade the digs of the Riverhounds, who play in the United Soccer League and have been using the field at Chartiers Valley High School. The Riverhounds' schedule will be released after Christmas, he said. They play from March through August. The Passion plays from April through June.
Rink hours for open skating will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 3 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday. Holiday hours will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Christmas eve. The rink will close for Christmas. Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League games will take place after 5 p.m. on weekdays and in the morning on Saturdays. Rates to skate are $7 for adults, $5 for youth, with $3 skate rentals. NHL, union could resume talks this week By The Associated Press NEW YORK The NHL and the locked-out Players Association are talking again, and a return to the bargaining table could happen soon. After a few days to cool off following an epic collapse in negotiations, the league and the union have been in touch with each other in an attempt to restart conversations that could save the hockey season. Trying to set up something for this week, but nothing finalized yet, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly wrote Sunday in an to the Associated Press. Negotiations broke down Thursday night after three straight days of talks at a New York hotel. Moments after players association executive director Donald Fehr said he believed the sides were closing in on a deal to end the lockout, he was back at the podium to announce the NHL had rejected the union s latest offer. Commissioner Gary Bettman followed him and angrily stated that the sides weren t close and added he didn t know why Fehr thought they were. The tone has changed a bit since then. Whether it has shifted far enough for the sides to come to an agreement soon remains to be seen. On Friday, Daly said he was at a loss how to get the bargaining process back on track. I have no reason, nor any intention, of reaching out to the union right now, Daly said in an to the AP. I have no new ideas. Maybe they do. We are happy to listen. All games have been canceled through Friday, and more games surely will be wiped off the schedule soon. Bettman said Thursday that he won t allow a season to be played that contains fewer than 48 games per team the length of the season that was played after a lockout ended in January 1995.
Fehr repeated Saturday his feeling that the sides aren t all that far apart. My comments from a couple of days ago stand on their own. I think we were very close, Fehr told reporters after addressing a Canadian Auto Workers council meeting. Pens Prospects Fight for World Junior Championship Roster Spots Monday, / 6:00 AM / Features By Sam Kasan The 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship will be held Dec. 26, 2012 to Jan. 5, 2013 in Ufa, Russia. And several Penguins prospects are expected to participate. But first they must earn a spot in their country s lineup. Here are Pittsburgh s prospects vying for a chance to wear their country s sweater in the WJC. Scott Harrington Team Canada invited 37 players to their National Junior Team selection camp, which takes place Dec at Markin MacPhail Centre at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary. While nothing is ever guaranteed, defenseman Scott Harrington is considered to be a lock to make Team Canada s roster. Harrington, Pittsburgh s second-round pick (54th overall) in the 2011 NHL Draft, is hoping to make his second-straight WJC team after helping Canada earn a bronze medal in last year s tournament. He was a bit of a surprise making that World Junior team (last year), Penguins assistant to the general manager Tom Fitzgerald said. They needed a player to fill a certain shutdown, PK role. That s what he did. He s gained a lot of experience over the last year. Harrington, 19, is captain of the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. Under Harrington s leadership the Knights boast the best record in the OHL with a mark, and helped steer the club on an active 18-game winning streak. Harrington (6-foot-2, 205 pounds) served as a Knights alternate captain last season and helped lead the Knights to the OHL championship and a runner-up finish in the Memorial Cup Final. And it s not out of the realm of possibility that Harrington is in consideration for wearing a C
with Canada at the WJC. Coming in and being the captain this year for a very good junior team, he could be the captain of Team Canada, Fitzgerald said, because of his experience in the Memorial Cup and last year s World Juniors. Fitzgerald expects Harrington to fill a similar role with Canada in the 2013 WJC as the Pens defensive prospect occupied in the 2012 tournament. I see him being that guy to fill the same role, be a good complimentary defenseman, he said. He could be a real good fit for a more offensive-minded defenseman. He ll have their back while they go. That doesn t mean he s not capable of pushing the puck north to create offense as well. I see him filling the same type of role. Derrick Pouliot Derrick Pouliot, a Penguins first-round pick (eighth overall) in the 2012 NHL Draft, will be attending his first Team Canada camp and will be competing with 36 other players for a spot on his country s roster. Pouliot, 18, certainly has solid credentials to consider. He s been a prominent leader and contributor to the Portland Winterhawks current first-place record in the Western Hockey League with a record. Pouliot also helped the Winterhawks reach the WHL Final in back-to-back seasons in and I think it s a great step for him that he got invited as an 18-year-old; it s really a 19-year-old tournament, Fitzgerald said. For Derrick to get invited to the camp and have a chance to make the team, I think it s a great experience for him. He s a guy they ll look at as an offensive, power-play type of guy for their team. Whether he makes it or not, it s the experience in itself. Playing with all eyes on you, everyone is coming to watch, you re under the microscope. It s a good opportunity for him. If it doesn t happen that s OK, too. It doesn t change how we feel about him as a prospect by any means. It s just a hurdle, a little adversity. Moving forward it s going to help him. Pouliot (5-foot-11, 195 pounds) has a brilliant blend of offensive talent and defensive abilities that could make him a valuable asset for Team Canada. This kid can really skate. He generates a lot of offense through his legs, Fitzgerald said
comparing him to current Penguins blueliner Kris Letang. He really can pass the puck. He zips pucks. These are quick-thinking plays through seams in the offensive zone. I think he s going to be a real good offensive defenseman. He has a lot of poise for a young man. When he wants to go and generate offense, he can do it with his legs. He has as good a chance as anyone else. At the end of the day he ll play well and show them that he s there to make the team. His attitude will be great. Olli Maatta Penguins defensive prospect Olli Maatta is expected to be named to Team Finland for the thirdstraight tournament. Maatta served as captain of Finland s summer evaluation camp. Maatta, a Penguins first-round pick (22nd overall) in the 2012 NHL Draft in Pittsburgh, has been a defensive leader with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League and a teammate of fellow Penguins prospect Scott Harrington. Man, he s such a likable prospect, Fitzgerald said. He s young, turned 18 in August. He s very mature for his age with his game. He has the big body. He can skate well. He can defend. He can move the puck. He gives you offense and defense. He does both equally well. He just gives you everything. Maatta has a lot of experience with the WJC. He played for Team Finland the past two tournaments, making his debut at just 16 years old in Maatta (6-foot-2, 206 pounds) played his first season of North American hockey in The No. 1-overall pick by London in the CHL Import Draft played an integral part in the team s success. The Knights won the OHL championship and came up just one game short of a Memorial Cup title, losing in the Final to Shawinigan. The things Maatta has learned playing in pressure games and situations, plus another World Junior Championship against the best teenagers in the world, will only make him a better player. He got the experience from last year, Fitzgerald said. It s a big thing playing for your country. He s just chomping at the bit to get going. He brings a wealth of experience for such a young kid, too. Think about coming to North America and having the year he s had, going to the
Memorial Cup Final, being drafted in the first round, then going back. He s got a lot of experience in a short time. Teddy Blueger Another Penguins prospect that is a lock to represent his country in the World Junior Championship is forward Teddy Blueger. The 18-year-old played for Team Latvia in the WJC last year. He played last year so he ll play this year, Fitzgerald said. He should be able to go over there and get a chance to play high minutes against top kids in the world. That doesn t go unnoticed. Blueger relocated to America to play prep hockey at Shattuck-St. Mary s in Minnesota (the same school that produced Sidney Crosby). In his final two seasons in and 11-12, Blueger helped lead his school to back-to-back USA Hockey National Under-18 championships. Last year, his senior campaign, he led the team in scoring with 88 points (24G-64A). Blueger, the Penguins second-round pick (52nd overall) in 2012, is playing college hockey with the Minnesota State Mavericks this season. He s taking a different path than his countrymen, coming over and playing prep school hockey and (going) from there to the WCHA, Fitzgerald said. That s a real big jump. With every week you get more comfortable with college hockey. I don t think any of us thought he d have an impact as a freshman, which expectation-wise is unfair to think that anyways. It s baby steps and you think long-term with guys like that. The path that they ve chosen, particularly Teddy, going to college is a longer path. That s OK. Kids develop at different ages. He s gaining some momentum with confidence. Anton Zlobin The final Penguins prospect looking to earn a spot in the World Junior Championship is 2012 seventh-round pick Anton Zlobin. The Russian forward is one of 31 players invited to participate in Team Russia s National Junior Team selection camp, Dec in Novogorsk, Russia.
He has a chance. I think he can make that team, Fitzgerald said. He s a real slippery player. He can shoot the puck. He s smart in the offensive zone. He gets into holes. His skating has improved. He s a skilled player. He sees the ice well. He s not the biggest fellow. He just thinks the game well. Zlobin, 19, has been an offensive force in the Qubec Major Junior Hockey League. He s tallied 40 points (15G-25A) in 30 games, including a 15-game scoring streak, with Val d Or. Last year with Shawinigan, Zlobin notched 76 points (40G-36A) in 66 contests and helped his squad capture the Memorial Cup by scoring both goals, including the overtime winner, in a 2-1 triumph over London in the final game. You can t replace that experience, Fitzgerald said. You re put into situations to succeed and you can go either way with it. This kid succeeded. He helped take a team that didn t finish well, but because they hosted the tournament they got the bid. You could have easily packed it in or chucked it away, but his group, with his involvement, they stuck it out and came together at the right time. He was a huge part of that. Zlobin played for Russia in the summer's Canada-Russian Challenge. Playing again for Russia would be a huge honor for Zlobin, considering that the WJC tournament is taking place in Russia. It would be Zlobin s first experience in world junior play, but he has represented his country before in the Subway Super Series. I saw him play in that Russian Subway series, Fitzgerald said. He played with (12th-overall draft pick Mikhail) Grigorenko. They were good. He did well. All indications are that he has a real good chance of making the team. Domi helps London to 18th straight OHL victory Sunday, / 4:46 PM / News NHL.com Maxi Domi and Seth Griffith each had three-point games to help the London Knights tie a franchise record with their 18th consecutive victory Sunday in a 5-2 win against Mississauga. Domi, the No. 4-ranked skater in the OHL for the 2013 NHL Draft by NHL Central Scouting in its preliminary rankings, also had a goal and two assists to give him 18 tallies and 44 points for the
season. Both Domi and Griffith assisted on a goal by Bo Horvat, who is the No. 5-rated skater by Central Scouting for the 2013 draft. Griffith, a fifth-round pick in the 2012 NHL Draft by the Boston Bruins, scored his team-leading 21st goal and his 54 points are second in the Ontario Hockey League behind Ryan Strome, the New York Islanders' top prospect, of Niagra. The Knights, who lead the OHL's Midwest Division with a record, tied the franchise mark of 18 straight wins set during the season. The OHL's record win streak is 25 games by the Kitchener Rangers. Labor talks could resume this week Updated: December 9, 2012, 7:19 PM ET Associated Press NEW YORK -- The NHL and the locked-out players' association are talking again, and a return to the bargaining table could happen soon. After a few days to cool off following an epic collapse in negotiations, the league and the union have been in touch with each other in an attempt to restart conversations that could save the hockey season. "Trying to set up something for this week, but nothing finalized yet," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly wrote Sunday in an to The Associated Press. Negotiations broke down Thursday night after three straight days of talks at a New York hotel. Moments after players' association executive director Donald Fehr said he believed the sides were closing in on a deal to end the lockout, he was back at the podium to announce the NHL had rejected the union's latest offer. Commissioner Gary Bettman followed him and angrily stated that the sides weren't close, and added he didn't know why Fehr thought they were. The tone has changed a bit since then. Whether it has shifted far enough for the sides to come to an agreement soon remains to be seen. On Friday, Daly said he was at a loss how to get the bargaining process back on track. "I have no reason, nor any intention, of reaching out to the union right now," Daly said in an to the AP. "I have no new ideas. Maybe they do. We are happy to listen."
All games have been canceled through Friday, and more games will surely be wiped off the schedule soon. Bettman said Thursday that he won't allow a season to be played that contains fewer than 48 games per team -- the length of the season that was played after a lockout ended in January Fehr repeated on Saturday his feeling that the sides aren't all that far apart. "My comments from a couple of days ago stand on their own. I think we were very close," Fehr told reporters after addressing a Canadian Auto Workers council meeting. The lockout has resulted in the cancellation of 422 regular-season games along with the New Year's Day Winter Classic and the All-Star Game. The NHL is in danger of losing its second full season in seven years. The lockout that forced the cancellation of the season marked the first time a North American professional sports league had a full campaign wiped out by a labor dispute. The agreement that was finally reached back then expired this September, leading to a lockout being imposed again on Sept. 16. NHL owners are all out of tricks Jeff Blair TORONTO The Globe and Mail The seed has been sown, the manure and water to be provided by the acolytes in the media that he and Bill Daly have BlackBerried into duty. Broadcast jobs are on offer, front-office positions at the ready. It is too early to gauge the success of this latest attempt by commissioner Gary Bettman and his owners to cleave National Hockey League players from the leadership of the NHLPA. It didn t work a few pay cheques ago when ownership ran out the notion that Donald Fehr was withholding information from his constituents, but the holiday shopping season is upon us and now we will see the resolve of the NHL players. They can turtle as they ve done in the past and continue down the gelded path to becoming an ineffectual arm of the league, just like the NB Players Association and NFL Players Association. Or they can read between all that uncomfortable anger Bettman showed on Thursday in New
York when he was outmanoeuvred by Fehr and the NHLPA, and realize a deal is there to be made soon, if they hold together. Bettman gave them the path to follow: a 48-game schedule is the least he can do to give some type of integrity to a shortened season: in other words, the sides can get a season in if they get something done by mid-january. Bettman even acknowledged that this was very tough bargaining, which an optimist would take as a realization that some place in the corner of his heart he s developed a grudging respect for his opponent. Do not be misled by the two-month-old press releases run out by the so-called doves among the owners who met with that group of players; this is all playing out according to plan. Give the players a strong dose of Jeremy Jacobs, then bring in the kinder, gentler owners. Get the players to waste time that should have been spent decertifying by luring them into a meeting without their union chief. It might have worked, were it not for the idiot who suggested to players representative Ron Hainsey that they might want to come back without Fehr and get the deal done. Really: who d want their bad, old lawyers with them when they re negotiating a contract with a bunch of like-minded good guys Burkie and Tannie and Vinny and Chipper. Someone did inform the owners that much to their chagrin, it s to be sure Alan Eagleson doesn t run the union any more, right? So that s where we are: ownership still testing the players resolve, making behind-the-scenes approaches to orchestrate a rebellion against Fehr while doing things they swore they d never do and make changes to their last-ever, final, not-to-be-tinkered-with, best offer; players well aware that they can keep the owners chestnuts roasting on an open fire for three more weeks or so before the doomsday clock really starts ticking. This was all so predictable when Fehr was brought in to clean up the players association: hockey s good-guy culture running smack into the ultimate outsider, someone whose legacy can t be damaged by the brief chapter in his book that will be his tenure as NHLPA chief, because nobody who counts in the U.S. much cares. And that s what really eats away at the owners and Bettman: Fehr has no skin in this game at all, beyond his legal obligations. When he s done, he ll move to a place where people will wonder where he s been the past couple of years. In the meantime, the owners are down to the bottom of the bag of stupid owner tricks, and while hockey players were destined to give back more than they ll ever gain in collective bargaining the second they opened the door to a salary cap, they are close to the point at which they ve minimized their losses as much as possible. Let s see if they have the stones to hang in against the wishes of the hockey world; let s see if they can stop being good guys and act all grown up.
DALY, STEVE FEHR SPEAK OVER WEEKEND, BUT NO TALKS SCHEDULED TSN.CA STAFF Even after Thursday's emotional breakdown of talks between the National Hockey League and the NHL Players' Association, the two sides continue to stay in touch. TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com reports that NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly and NHLPA special counsel Steve Fehr have spoken over the weekend but there is still nothing officially scheduled at this point. The lockout entered its 85th day on Sunday with the prospect of more game cancellations looming early in the coming week. 422 games have been cancelled so far through Dec. 14, along with the Winter Classic and the All-Star Game. The owners rejected the players' most recent proposal late on Thursday. In an to the The Associated Press on Friday night, Daly wrote "I have no reason, nor any intention, of reaching out to the union right now. I have no new ideas. Maybe they do. We are happy to listen." NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr spoke in Toronto on Saturday and called for talks to resume. "It's up to them," Fehr said, following a speech to the Canadian Auto Workers union. "They're the ones who called a halt to the process. "The one thing we know for certain is that you can't make agreements if you're not talking about it." WHL: BLADES CRUSH PATS, WINTERHAWKS DOWN AMERICANS The Canadian Press

Frederik Gauthier scored once and added three assists for the Oceanic ( ), who have won seven of their last 10 outings, while Francis Beauvillier and Peter Trainor had a goal and two assists apiece.
