ET EAST LANSING, MICH. DEMARTIN STADIUM HOME AGAIN The Spartans return to DeMartin Stadium after traveling to Seattle for the first road trip of the season at the Husky/Nike Invitational last week. MSU earned a 1-1 draw (Sept. 2) against host Washington and defeated Portland 1-0 (Aug. 30). BLACK & GOLD MSU will see two different shades of black and gold on the field this week in facing the Golden Grizzlies on Thursday and the Buffs on Sunday. LAST TIME OUT Michigan State women s soccer battled Washington to a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Husky Soccer Stadium Sunday (Sept. 2), finishing the two-game Husky/Nike Invitational unbeaten. A 64th minute equalizer from junior forward Lydia Franks and a career high tying 11 saves from redshirt-junior goalkeeper Reilley Ott led the Spartans. Ott made a jumping fingertip save in the second overtime to knock the would-be game-winner off the crossbar and extend the game. PAC-12 x 2 Sunday marks the second time in seven days the Spartans will face a team from the Pac-12 Conference after playing Washington last week. CAPTAINS Redshirt-juniors Reilley Ott and Michaela Kovacs have been named team captains for the 2018 season. Both players were also named to the Big Ten Preseason Honors List. Kovacs returns for MSU after starting and playing all 90 minutes of the first three games a year ago before suffering a season-ending injury. PLAYER OF THE WEEK DUO Redshirt-juniors Reilley Ott and Michaela Kovacs were named Big Ten Goalkeeper and Big Ten Defender of the Week, respectively, as announced by the conference Tuesday. It s the first Big Ten Weekly Honor for both Ott and Kovacs, and is the third time a Spartan has earned Player of the Week recognition this season after Sadie Misiewicz was named Offensive Player of the Week on Aug. 21. Kovacs delivered the game-winning score against Portland on Aug. 30. The Golden Goal came on a running header off a corner kick from junior Kassidy Madrigal in the 94th minute to break a scoreless tie. Kovacs was on the field for all 204 minutes the Spartans played in the Husky/Nike Invitational. Ott recorded her fourth straight shutout to start the season, making five saves in the win against the Pilots. She tied her career high with 11 saves in Sunday s (Sept. 2) 1-1 draw on the road at Washington. Ott was named the Husky/Nike Invitational Defensive Player of the Tournament and has been in goal for every minute the Spartans have been on the field this season. MICHIGAN STATE NOTES The Spartans are in a four-way tie at the top of the Big Ten standings a week before conference play begins along with Iowa, Northwestern, and Rutgers. 1

2 Goalkeeper Reilley Ott is tied for third in the country with four shutouts, just one behind co-leaders Rhylee DeCrane (Mississippi State) and Cosette Morche (Texas A&M). The Spartans rank in the Top 10 of Division I women s soccer in save percentage (third, 0.960) goals-against average (seventh, 0.190), and shutout percentage (ninth, 0.800) SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES Oakland heads into Thursday s game with a record following a 1-0 loss (Sept. 2) at home against Eastern Michigan. Freshman defender Sophie Wilsey leads the team with one goal (Aug. 17 at UMKC). Senior midfielder Lauren Bos recorded an assist on Wilsey s goal. Senior midfielder Ali Amante leads the team with five shots on the season. The Spartans lead the all-time series with Oakland by a margin. MSU won last year s meeting 1-0 in East Lansing. SCOUTING THE BUFFS Colorado has won three straight since a 0-0 double-overtime draw with Colorado State on Aug. 19 and sit at on the season before taking on Marquette (Sept. 6). The Buffs enter this week ranked No. 23 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Poll and are receiving three votes in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. Junior forward Tatum Barton is third in the country with a 1.20 goals per game average, trailing just behind co-leaders Mimi Asom (Princeton) and Kelsey Yeager (Presbyterian) at 1.25 gpg. The only previous meeting between MSU and Colorado was in 2016 with the Spartans taking a 2-1 OT victory in Boulder. PRESEASON HONORS Three players were named to the Big Ten Women s Soccer Preseason Honors List. Senior Lexy Warner, Kovacs and Ott were named to the list. Warner, a native of Ypsilanti, Michigan, played in and started in 15 games during the 2017 season, totaling 1,131 minutes. She was second on the team in points (32), goals (5) and shots (32) while coming in third on the team in assists with three. Kovacs, from Hudsonville, Michigan, was named one of four team captains for the Spartans last year. She started in three games, playing all 90 minutes before suffering a season-ending injury. Kovacs earned the start in all 18 games for the Spartans in 2016, spending 1,680 minutes on the field at defense, the second-most of any Spartan. A native of Grapevine, Texas, Ott played in all 18 games and started 17 for MSU in She earned a 1.87 goals against average and was first in the Big Ten with 110 saves and 6.10 saves per game while finishing with a.780 save percentage. THE BIG TEN SO FAR Michigan State, Iowa, Northwestern and Rutgers are the only teams in the conference without a loss and all four sit at on the season. UP NEXT The Spartans begin conference play with a two-game trip to Purdue (Sept. 13) and Indiana (Sept. 16). The matchup with Purdue will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network. GK Oakland Twp., Mich./Rochester Adams HEAD COACH TOM SAXTON 28TH SEASON SAXTON SPOTLIGHT: First conference Big Ten Coach of the Year Award winner, Spartans win program s only Big Ten Championship Big Ten Coach of the Year First NCAA Tournament appearance RECORDS- Saxton has coached all 10 of the career leaders in goals and assists leaders at MSU Entering his 28th season as head coach of the Michigan State women s soccer program, Tom Saxton has spent more than half of his life involved in Spartan soccer. A life-long Spartan, Saxton earned three letters as a player before returning to campus in 1986 to assist legendary Spartan soccer coach Joe Baum with both the men s and the new women s program. Saxton was appointed the second head coach in the history of the women s program on June 1, In 27 seasons, Saxton s career record stands at The Spartans have posted winning seasons in six of the past 10 years and in 12 of the last 18. Saxton s teams boasted perhaps the finest player in Michigan State history, three-time All-American Laura Heyboer. She completed her career as the most decorated player in program history, and one of the most prolific scorers in the Big Ten - she graduated with every MSU scoring record, is one of a handful of players to earn First Team All-Big Ten honors all four years of her career, and ranks fifth all-time in the Big Ten scoring list. Heyboer has gone on to a professional career, originally drafted by Sky Blue FC, and won a WPSL-Elite Championship with the Western New York Flash in Heyboer and the 2011 team finished on the season, and won a program-best seven Big Ten games on the year. In all, 21 players earned Academic All-Big Ten honors, while a school-record eight earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar kudos for maintaining a 3.7 GPA in the school year. Saxton also directed 2014 s squad to the NCAA Tournament for the third time since 2002, where the Spartans advanced to the second round. In 2009, the Spartans went and posted a record in Big ten Conference games, and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season, losing an overtime heartbreaker to No. 11 Santa Clara. Saxton has helped the team transition seamlessly into the fabric of one of the toughest conferences in the NCAA, helping the Spartans to four NCAA Tournament appearances and 12 Big Ten Tournament trips. A two-time Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year, Saxton, earned his 150th victory in the opening-round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament. It was MSU s first-ever NCAA Tournament win. Saxton s Spartans posted a record in 2005, their sixth-straight season with double-digit wins, including a mark in conference action, the team s best-ever Big Ten mark. He attained his 200th victory against DePaul in the 2011 opener. Saxton led Michigan State to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2002, guiding the Green and White to a overall record, including a mark in the Big Ten. Thanks to their fourth-place finish in the tough Big Ten, the Spartans earned an at-large bid to the tournament. Saxton also won the Big Ten Coach of the Year Award in 1994, the conference s first season. That year, the Spartans finished with an overall mark of and a league record to take home the soccer program s only Big Ten Championship. In all, Saxton has coached all 10 of the career leaders in goals and assists at Michigan State, serving as head coach during seven of 10 of their careers. He also was a tutor for all five of the top goalkeepers in school history, serving as head coach during four of their careers.
