Last season the Penguins went 2-2 against the Hurricanes, including a 1-1 mark here at CONSOL Energy Center. Chris Kunitz led the Penguins in both goals (2) and points (4) during the season series. Sidney Crosby and Beau Bennett each had a team- best three assists. TONIGHT S GAME ON WPCW As a reminder, tonight s game is the first of four Penguins preseason games that will be shown on television. The pregame show will be live on site beginning at 7 p.m. with hosts Bob Costas, Liam McHugh and Mike Milbury.

BEAU KNOWS WINNING The Penguins won their preseason opener last night in Columbus, 1-0 in a shootout, as Beau Bennett was the lone shooter on either side to convert in the shootout. Jeff Zatkoff got the start for Pittsburgh and went 40 minutes, stopping all 23 shots he faced. Tristan Jarry played the final 25 minutes, stopped all seven shots he saw before denying all three shootout attempts, earning Jarry the victory. The contest was supposed to be one of Pittsburgh s three pre- selected games to feature 3- on- 3 overtime following regulation, regardless of the score, but the new format was needed anyways when neither team scored in the first 60 minutes. One wrinkle of 3- on- 3 overtime was on display as a Columbus penalty on Antti Pihlstrom gave the Penguins a power play, which was played 4- on- 3 since three skaters are the fewest an NHL team can have on the ice at any one time. Bennett led the Penguins with seven shots, with David Perron finishing just behind him with six. Defenseman David Warsofsky, signed from the Boston organization on July 1, logged a team- best 25:45 minutes. Reid McNeill and Ben Lovejoy paced the club with five hits each. In the shootout, Conor Sheary and Perron had the other attempts for the Penguins. Oliver Bjorkstrand, Alexander Wennberg and Ryan Murray all shot for Columbus, with none of the three successful. 6 NEUTRAL SITE VISITS Pittsburgh will play a pair of neutral site games this preseason on back- to- back nights September The first night the Penguins will head to Quebec City to play the Montreal Canadiens in the first- ever game at the Videotron Centre. One night later, the Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning meet in the first- ever Kraft Hockeyville USA contest versus the Tampa Bay Lightning at the historic Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown, Pa. War Memorial Arena was the setting for the famous 1977 comedy Slap Shot featuring the late Paul Newman based upon the fictional Charlestown Chiefs hockey team. Penguins goaltender Marc- Andre Fleury and ROOT SPORTS reporter Dan Potash did a remake of one of the iconic scenes from the movie, an interview conducted by broadcaster Jim Carr with French- Canadian goaltender Denis Lemieux of the Charlestown Chiefs. Below is a link to the video and an article on the skit: NBC Sports Network will broadcast Slap Shot immediately following the Penguins- Lightning tilt. 3- on- 3 OVERTIME This season the NHL has instituted 3- on- 3 overtime to help settle games that are deadlocked after 60 minutes of regulation. If games are still tied following overtime, the contest will advance to the shootout format. During the preseason, any game that is tied will use 3- on- 3, followed by the shootout. In an effort to help teams prepare for the new format, each club has had three of its preseason games pre- selected to play 3- on- 3 following regulation, REGARDLESS of the score. For score- keeping purposes, the team ahead at the end of regulation will have been deemed the winner, eliminating the need for a shootout even if 3- on- 3 concludes without a goal. Here are the three games the Penguins will DEFINITELY play 3- on- 3 overtime: Monday, Sept. 21 at Columbus 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24 at Detroit 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26 COLUMBUS 4 p.m. Pittsburgh s first pre- selected 3- on- 3 overtime contest, the exhibition opener against the Columbus Blue Jackets, required overtime anyways as neither team scored during the first 60 minutes. The match remained scoreless following five minutes of 3- on- 3, necessitating a shootout. During the 3- on- 3 overtime against Columbus, the Penguins played two minutes with a 4- on- 3 power play, as the Blue Jackets Antti Pihlstrom was whistled for boarding.

WHEELIN AND DEALIN Penguins GM Jim Rutherford and his hockey operations staff made several roster moves this summer to help transform Pittsburgh s offensive attack. The biggest move was the July 1 blockbuster deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs to acquire five- time 30- goal scorer Phil Kessel as part of a megadeal that saw Nick Spaling, Scott Harrington and Kasperi Kapanen exit the Penguins organization. In late July, the Penguins swung another big deal, sending Brandon Sutter, who was coming off a career- high 21 goals, to Vancouver for versatile, two- way forward Nick Bonino and prospect D- man Adam Clendening, in a move that also saw the Penguins acquire a 2016 second- round pick in exchange for a third- rounder. In free agency the Penguins signed NHL vets Eric Fehr and Matt Cullen, while also luring Russian winger Sergei Plotnikov from the KHL and Swedish blueliner Niclas Andersen from the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). Below is a look at the additions and subtractions to Pittsburgh s depth chart since the end of the 2015 postseason: ADDITIONS SUBTRACTIONS D Niclas Andersen (FA- SHL) F Craig Adams (FA) F Tyler Biggs (T- Toronto) F Blake Comeau (FA- Colorado) D Adam Clendening (T- Vancouver) D Taylor Chorney (FA- Washington) F Matt Cullen (FA- Nashville) F Steve Downie (FA- Arizona) D Tim Erixon (T- Toronto) F Andrew Ebbett (FA- Europe) F Eric Fehr (FA- Washington) D Christian Ehrhoff (FA- Los Angeles) F Phil Kessel (T- Toronto) G Thomas Greiss (FA- NY Islanders) F Kael Mouillierat (FA- NY Islanders) D Scott Harrington (T- Toronto) D Steve Oleksy (FA- Washington) F Maxim Lapierre (FA- Europe) D Will O Neill (FA- Winnipeg) F Jayson Megna (FA- NY Rangers) F Sergei Plotnikov (FA- KHL) F Nick Spaling (T- Toronto) F Kevin Porter (FA- Detroit) F Brandon Sutter (T- Vancouver) D David Warsofsky (FA- Boston) F Daniel Winnik (FA- Toronto) TRYOUT TIME The Penguins have invited two NHL veterans to camp on professional tryout contracts defenseman Sergei Gonchar and forward Tom Sestito. Gonchar was a member of the Penguins 2009 Stanley Cup championship club during his original run with the club from During that time he rung up 259 points (54G- 205A), the sixth- highest total among blueliners in team history. Last season, Gonchar split the year between the Dallas Stars and Montreal Canadiens.

Sestito, the largest member of the Penguins training camp roster at 6- foot- 5, 228 pounds, played last year with the Vancouver Canucks and their top minor- league affiliate in Utica of the American Hockey League (AHL). LAST SEASON LOOKBACK Last year the Penguins played their first season under the direction of rookie head coach Mike Johnston, finishing fourth in the Metropolitan Division, which earned a First Round meeting with the New York Rangers, who eliminated Pittsburgh for the second- consecutive year, 4-1. The regular season was a tale of two halves for the Penguins, as the club stormed out of the gate to a mark through the first 41 games, but a rash of injuries led to an uneven second half that forced the Penguins to defeat the Buffalo Sabres (2-0) on the final night of the regular season to earn a ninth- consecutive postseason appearance. Goaltender Marc- Andre Fleury was a rock between the pipes, leading the NHL with a career- high 10 shutouts en route to being crowned Team MVP. Captain Sidney Crosby once again led the team in points with 84, as he and Evgeni Malkin tied for the team goal- scoring lead with 28 apiece. Although Kris Letang was limited to just 69 games in large part because of a concussion suffered on March 28 against Arizona, he still put together the finest regular season of his career, establishing career bests in both assists (43) and points (54) while excelling in his own zone. SUMMER OF SID Penguins captain Sidney Crosby enjoyed an eventful summer, with the highlight being his first- ever Sidney Crosby Hockey School held August 3-7 in his hometown of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The camp, which featured 120 boys and girls aged 8-12 was held at Cole Harbour Place. It included on- ice skill development, dry- land and other off- ice activities and special guest presentations. Among the NHL players who assisted Crosby during his camp were Nate MacKinnon, Zach Sill and Andrew MacDonald. Crosby and McKinnon were also photographed together working a Tim Hortons drive- thru window as part of a commercial they were filming. In August, Crosby and his former teammate/linemate, Colby Armstrong, played for the Penguins staff dek hockey club, Team Iceland, for a ball- hockey game in Cranberry, Pa. Crosby donned the goaltender pads and picked up the shootout victory in a 4-3 Iceland win. Crosby stopped both shooters he faced in the shootout, while Armstrong scored Iceland s opening goal in regulation and added a shootout marker.

ROOKIE TOURNAMENT RECAP Pittsburgh sent a group of 26 prospects and free agent invites to the annual rookie tournament in London, Ontario Sept The Penguins, who were coached by the Wilkes- Barre/Scranton staff of Mike Sullivan and Jay Leach, along with Wheeling head man Clark Donatelli, went 2-1. Pittsburgh opened the tournament with a 4-3 overtime win against Montreal, then posted an impressive 4-1 defeat of the Ottawa Senators the following afternoon. The tournament concluded with a 6-2 loss to Toronto in the concluding matchup. The 4-3 overtime win against Montreal marked the first time this season that the Penguins participated in a 3- on- 3 overtime session. Pittsburgh won the game 1:18 into OT when 2015 second- round (46 th overall) Daniel Sprong beat Montreal s Anthony Fucale with a backhander on a breakaway. That play was preceded by Montreal hitting two posts behind Pittsburgh s Matt Murray at the opposite end. Sprong led Pittsburgh in both goals (2) and points (3) during the rookie tournament.
