Record NJ Division 19-3 #11 #3 Our Savior New American (NY) (72) at St. Peter's Prep (56) By Star-Ledger on February 16, 2014 Michael Nzei led all scorers with 23 points when Our Savior New American (N.Y.) earned a victory over St. Peter's Prep, No. 8 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, in the Metro Classic at Kean University in Union. Austin White led St. Peter's Prep with 17 points and Veer Singh scored 16 points. St. Peter's Prep took a lead into the second quarter with some key 3-point shooting leading the way. But once the shots from beyond the arc stopped falling, Our Savior New American took control. Our Savior New American got 21 points from Kobie Eubanks. RECORD & RANKING *** Game report from Brian: Prep beaten by Our Savior New American at Kean U. Veer Singh had 16 points in 1st half - 0 in 2nd half. A few mental lapses (poor passing, unforced errors) not a good day for our kids - it happens. Again, a great effort. Team was well prepared, well coached. I still love this group. 4 Commentary from Stu on this game: I do recall that game and one particular play when we took the lead. Apparently, they finally realized someone should try to guard me which gave me the opportunity to drive to the basket and as I went up, I saw Scotty Ryan come down the lane and get free as Joe Frangipane came over to try and block my layup. I was able to get the ball to Ryan who proceeded to put down a 2 hand slam dunk and almost got a technical for hanging on the rim afterwards.

The favorable conditions for hockey set the stage for a warm-up between Pope John and St. Peter's Prep in a preview of the upcoming Gordon Conference quarterfinals next week. Charlie Spetz, Richie Halevy and Dylan Kuipers broke open a one-goal game in the third period as Pope John, No. 9 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, received three goals over the final six minutes remaining to fashion a 5-1 victory over No. 6 St. Peter's Prep at Skylands Ice World last night in Stockholm. The Pope John victory gives the Sparta school the National Division title as well as a mental victory heading into Monday's rematch in the Gordon Cup according to Spetz, the team's junior defenseman. "More than anything, this was a mental victory," Spetz, who had a goal and an assist and provided a steady presence on the blue line, said. "The third period we opened it up and started playing good hockey. Two power-play goals -- our power play has really been getting it done. We just kept battling. Donny Flynn put Pope John up 2-0 7:38 into the second period, but St. Peter's came right back when Ryen Pezzolla scored just 17 seconds off the ensuing face-off to make it 2-1 after two periods.

St. Peter's Prep, No. 6 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, hasn't been discouraged by the recent snowfall and the Jersey City school will hit the road and head north for a final tune-up before the Gordon Cup when it takes on No. 9 Pope John. The puck drops at 8:15 p.m. at Skylands Ice World in Stockholm, Sussex County. "The third period all year has been our best period. We knew whoever won this game would also win the division so we came out hard and got it done," said Kuipers, who delivered a goal and two assists during the three-goal flurry that came in a span of 4:56 in the third period. "We wanted to set the tone for Monday. This was very important for our confidence. Spetz put Pope John (15-4-2) up 3-1 on the power-play with 6:14 remaining in regulation. Richie Halevy hit just 1:29 later, assisted by Kuipers at 4:45 who proceeded to score one of his own with 1:20 left to play. "This was not a 5-1 game," Pope John coach Ryan Brown said. "Early in the third period we took back-toback penalties and came up with two huge kills. One, Spetz, our best penalty killer was in the box. That was the game right there. They could have popped one in right there then it's a whole different ball game. That four minute stretch in the third was big." Justin Natiello made 21 saves for Pope John. Jonathan LaBella had 24 stops for St. Peter's Prep. The Pope John victory evens its record against the Jersey City school, which prevailed, 4-2, in its previous meeting on Dec. 18. Pope John will skate again against St. Peter's Prep in its third and possible final meeting of the season in the Gordon Cup quarterfinals set for Monday at 5:15 p.m. at AmeriHealth Pavilion in Newark. "We came out a little sluggish. They had a good power play going. They got the puck up top, got guys to the net -- that's what we need to do on our power-play," Pezzolla, who finished the play started by Augie Burkhardt and Tommy Linkus to draw St. Peter's (10-7-3) to within one at 7:05 of the second period, said. "We're going to take this as a good loss against a good team. We're going to come back next time ready to play. "We know this is a good team and it's going to be a different game on Monday," Brown, in his first season as head coach at Pope John, said. "They are a good transition team, they have three skilled guys up front and they have a good goaltender. This gives us confidence going in and shows if we play our brand of hockey, our system from top to bottom, we can compete. I think you see that this year -- it's wide open this year unlike year's past."

8 Wrestling Top 20, Week 7: The song remains the same - for now By By Joe Kania and James Kratch/For The Star-Ledger There was a lot of snow last week, making an already slow week for wrestling between the state cutoff date and the start of the state team tournament even slower. So The Star-Ledger Top 20 remains unchanged - for now. But there will be a lot of movement the next time around when the final state poll of the season is released. By the end of business Sunday, though, we will have six state champions (and 20 sectional champions before that on Friday). And a quick glance at the Top 20 indicates not everyone will be ending their team season with hardware, opening the door for other schools that have made strong cases but have not yet cracked the Top 20 to take advantage. 1-Bergen Catholic (21-4) 2-Bound Brook (14-6) 3-Don Bosco Prep (19-3) 4-St. Peter s Prep (20-6) 5-Delbarton (14-3) 6-Southern (18-0) 7-Phillipsburg (14-0) 8-Hanover Park (16-3) 9-Howell (27-3) 10-Brick Memorial (14-3) 11-Paulsboro (18-1) 12-Jackson (17-3) 13-High Point (13-4) 14-Roselle Park (21-0) 15-Long Branch (21-3) 16-Raritan (29-3) 17-Kittatinny (16-2) 18-DePaul (10-6) 19-South Plainfield (21-5) 20-St. Augustine (18-2)

With the team trailing the defending champions, St. Peter s Prep, going into the match s third and final game at Hudson Lanes in Jersey City, the Soaring Eagles realized that time was running out. But they also knew if one man could spark the comeback, there would be no stopping Union City, especially with an energized fan base at their backs. It was a sense of confidence that border on cockiness, but it was also one that the Soaring Eagles backed up as Angel Figueroa got the ball rolling toward a 2,823-2,755 victory over the Marauders a victory matched by the Bayonne girls team, which defeated the Union City girls, 2,275-1,872.

18 Commentary/Recollections from Joe Parkes: I have the clipping and box score from a game against St. Michael's in our senior year. If memory serves me right, it was our last game of the year. We won 6-0. Jack O'Dea had a perfect game into the sixth inning (seven inning games) when Nick Simonetti lined a single to right. Again, if memory serves me right, Pete Sack was ready to throw him out at first.
