St. Peter's Prep basketball holds off Bayonne for 8th win of season By Michael Wright/The Jersey Journal on January 13, 2014 Not many teams go on the road, defeat a county rival by 15 points, and still come out of the locker room knowing that they could have played better. While St. Peter s Prep had problems with ball security and struggled from the free throw line at times, the Marauders relied on their raw talent and toughness to defeat Bayonne Monday night. Following the victory coach Todd Decker knew that even though the effort was there, his Marauders were capable of playing even better. We have a long way to go, said Decker, whose team is ranked No. 11 in The Star-Ledger Top 20. We shot ourselves in the foot at times, we had 15 turnovers, we missed 11 free throws, and those are just areas that will kill you. I just think it s all about these younger guys coming along and these older guys getting better and them jelling as a unit, but I think we did show some toughness and some heart at the end to help pull it out. Bayonne (6-3) was able to hang tough with St. Peter s (8-2) from the opening tip-off and only trailed by a basket at the end of the first quarter, managing to keep the game within seven points (32-25) at the half. However, after a few adjustments, St. Peter s slowly but surely extended its lead. With just seconds remaining in the third quarter, the Marauders grabbed a rebound off of a Qadry Callaway missed 3-pointer. Prep then jetted up the floor, before freshman Nate Pierre-Louis found Austin White, who knocked down a 3-pointer with less than two seconds remaining to give St. Peter s it s largest lead of the night at

3 At the start of the fourth quarter, White once again came through with a big play after Bayonne notched two quick buckets to cut Prep s lead to 12 points. But White responded with a sensational drive to the basket despite a hard foul. It s those types of plays that help us win games like these, said White, who led all scorers with 22 points. You could feel that the game was getting a little tight at that point, but that definitely shifted the momentum, quieted the crowd and really got our team into it. After getting a few early season showcase games against teams from up and down the East Coast out of the way, St. Peter s Prep can now focus on the task that Decker feels is most important winning in Hudson County. After it s victory over Bayonne, the Marauders will have another opportunity to defeat a county rival Tuesday night at home against Dickinson. They re huge (in-county games), this is our backyard, all these kids know one another, and games like this really prepare us for the end of the year, said Decker, Hudson County basketball is all about toughness and we try to tell the kids it doesn t matter what scholarship offers you have or what you re ranked, these teams are going to come after you. It toughens them up a bit and gets them ready for the county and state tournament.

By Patrick Villanova/The Jersey Journal on January 15, 2014 NEWARK Mike Goodrich was the first to point out the 45 minutes of hockey he just watched weren t his team s finest this season. But with an offensively-charged St. Peter s Prep unit averaging close to five goals per game at his disposal, Goodrich got just enough out of his team to secure a 5-3 victory over sworn rival Seton Hall Prep today at the AmeriHealth Pavilion. Augie Burkhardt continued his torrid sophomore season with a three-goal effort, while linemates Rocky Coviello and Sean Crowley combined for six points, helping the Marauders, ranked No. 10 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, improve to 8-3 this season. We had our spurts and those spurts were enough for us. But I don t think we played a great game tonight, it was a little sloppy, said Goodrich, now in his fourth season at Prep. Burkhardt (13 goals, 12 assists), who leads the high-octane Marauders in scoring, all but sealed the victory with his third goal of the evening just 48 seconds into the third period. With his team facing a 4-on-3 disadvantage, the crafty left winger jumped on a loose puck that was misplayed by a Seton Hall defenseman just inside the Marauders blue line. Burkhardt cruised in on net, flashing a forehand deke before slipping a backhand shot past Seton Hall goalie Dan Gleeson.

6 Augie Burkhardt, his legs were really going tonight, said Goodrich, whose top line of Burkhardt, Crowley and Coviello continues to produce. They have great chemistry. The three of them, they complement each other. Seton Hall (1-8) would respond some five minutes later when Peter Zazzali beat St. Peter s goalie Jonathan Labella (24 saves) to trim the lead to 5-3. But the Marauders maintained their two-goal cushion from there on and booked an allimportant Gordon Conference victory. The fact that it came against age-old rival Seton Hall was just an added bonus. We knew they were going to come out hard, said Coviello, who had a goal and three assists. St. Peter s/seton Hall in every sport basketball, football, baseball, hockey, probably even swimming they re all big games. That became increasingly evident as today s encounter wore on. Pushing and shoving after the whistle became commonplace, as the teams combined to take 10 penalties five each. It s definitely a great rivalry. Last year we had some tough games against them. We came out hard tonight and beat them, said Burkhardt. Every game is pretty physical, but especially because we re rivals, they wanted to come out and take our heads off. Burkhardt gave the home team a 1-0 lead nearly midway through the first period when he raced down the left boards to earn what would be the first of two breakaways on Gleeson. Ryen Pezzolla got a second-period goal surge started when he banged home a rebound off a shot from Tommy Linkus just over four minutes into play. Lurking in the slot area, Pezzolla capitalized when the puck found its way to his stick off Linkus rebound, pushing the Marauders lead to 2-0. That lead would double over the course of the next 4:52, as Coviello and Burkhardt both found the back of the net in that span. Coviello, normally an even strength right winger, continued the blitz when the blasted a slapshot from the left point on a St. Peter s power play. The impressive slap shot gave way to Burkhardt s second goal of the game three minutes later. After a flurry of penalties that saw a Seton Hall player disqualified for kicking, the Essex County school scored a pair of goals only 20 seconds apart in the waning moments of the second period. But Burkhardt quickly delivered Prep s fifth and final goal soon after the second intermission, providing the home team with the boost it needed something everyone in maroon and silver is getting used to. St. Peter's Prep (4) at St. Augustine (6) - Boys Ice Hockey By The Star Ledger on January 17, 2014 Ryan Conlin finished with four goals and an assist as St. Augustine, No. 16 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, earned a 6-4 victory against No. 10 St. Peter's at the Igloo in Mount Laurel. All four of Conlin's goals came in the fourth to put St. Augustine ahead. Dean DiSimone added a goal and two assist, while Anthony Deruchie also scored. Sean Crowley scored two goals and and assist for St. Peter's Prep. ***

8 Wrestling: No.1 Bergen Catholic makes statement with victory over No. 3 St. Peter's Prep in final of Garden State Duals at Rutgers. By Joe Kania/For The Star-Ledger on January 11, 2014 It was a busy weekend for Bergen Catholic, the top-ranked team in The Star-Ledger Top 20. Less than 24 hours after defeating No. 13 DePaul at home, the Oradell school downed No. 3 St. Peter's, 34-21, in the finals of the inaugural Garden State Duals on Saturday at Rutgers University. Our guys really stepped up to the challenge and really wrestled well, Bergen Catholic coach Dave Bell said. I think they saved their best for last. St. Peter's is a tremendous program and we have a great amount of respect for them and we'll be competing with them all year. I know at the end of the year we're going to be butting heads with them. Some of the team's starters skipped Friday night's match against DePaul. Among them were Johnny Sebastian, the No pounder in the state, and 2013 state-tournament qualifiers Laurien Anghelina (138) and Tyler Casamenti (120). But against its North Jersey, Non-Public A rival, all three were in the lineup. Wrapped in tape and sporting a brace just one week after dislocating his shoulder at The Clash national duals in Minnesota, Sebastian claimed an 8-0 major decision over Danny Sblendorio to push Bergen Catholic's lead to 34-6 with just four bouts remaining. I wanted to wrestle, Sebastian said. It was kind of important for us to make a statement. I felt good, I warmed up well. I had my brace on and I was feeling comfortable with the moves I was trying to hit. Worst case scenario I knew I could injury default out or something. This was a big match for us as a team, going against the No. 3 team in the state. This kind of let us find out what we were made of. I was just glad to be a part of it. Casamenti and Anghelina both fell in their bouts to ranked wrestlers, but Bergen Catholic would win eight of the 14 bouts. Those were some courageous performances, Bell said. Nick Suriano (113), Pete Lipari (126), Zack Spira (145), Jordan Pagano (160), and Kevin Mulligan (170) all picked up bonus point for Bergen Catholic. For Mulligan, ranked No. 6 in the state at 170, it was his fourth win at the Duals. His previous wins included one against No. 8 Kenny Long of Holy Cross. For his efforts, he was named the tournament's Most Valuable Wrestler for the upper weights. D.J. Tirelli (138) of River Dell won the award for the lower weights. To reach the final, St. Peter's downed No. 5 Delbarton, 32-29, with a fall from James Fox (220) in the final bout. Delbarton's Travis Vasquez, ranked No. 7 at 138, picked up a 3-1 victory over top-ranked Connor Burkert while St. Peter's Sonny Simonetti defeated No. 3 Christian Inarella, 3-1 in overtime. Delbarton went on to finish third. Video: Joe Grello of Bergen Catholic defeats Ryan Burkert of St. Peter's Prep at 152 pounds at inaugural Garden State Duals on Saturday at Rutgers.
