Tonight's game marks the first time Florida has opened the regular season at home since the seaon when they defeated Boston 8-3. The Panthers own a mark in season openers and a mark in the club's home openers. SOUTHEAST DIVISION CHAMPS Prior to the game this evening, the Panthers will unveil their first division championship banner in franchise history. The Panthers finished the regular season as the third seed in the Eastern Conference, with a mark, after sitting atop the Souteast Division for for 128 days, including 43 straight days to end the season. AGAINST THE CANES Saturday night s contest marks the 100th game in the all-time series between Carolina and Florida. Last season, the Panthers went against Carolina and are in their last ten games played at home. C Stephen Weiss has recorded 32 career points ( ) against the Canes in 49 games played. Last season in six games against Carolina, Weiss registered five points (1-4-5), while LW Tomas Fleischmann scored four goals (4-0-4) in six games played. LEADING BY EXAMPLE On Friday morning Head Coach Kevin Dineen announced that D Ed Jovanovski was named the club s seventh captain. He joins Brian Skrudland ( ), Scott Mellanby ( ), Paul Laus/Pavel Bure ( ), Olli Jokinen ( ) and Bryan McCabe ( ) as the other team captains in the club s 20-year history. Jovanovski, 36, was originally drafted by Florida first overall in the 1994 National Hockey League Draft. He sits fifth all-time among Panthers defenseman with 319 games played and sixth with 96 points ( ). The Windsor, Ontario native has also played in 76 postseason contests helping the Panthers reach the Stanley Cup Finals in THE DEBUT OF THE SAINT JOHN SENSATION Jonathan Huberdeau, who the Panthers selected third overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, is expected to make his NHL debut on Saturday night against Carolina. The 19-year old QMJHL star has played the past three seasons with Saint John s Sea Dogs where he has played in 195 games scoring 104 goals with 257 points while also winning the Memorial Cup MVP in MILLENNIUM MAN On Friday, Florida announced that the team signed RW Alex Kovalev to a one-year contract. Kovalev, 39, has played in 1,302 NHL games with New York, Pittsburgh, Montreal and Ottawa scoring 428 goals with 596 assists and 1,024 points. He has appeared in 123 postseason contests, recording 100 points ( ), while winning a Stanley Cup with New York in WELCOME BACK On Friday, the Panthers announced that they agreed to terms with D Dmitry Kulikov on a two-year contract. Kulikov, 22, played in 57 games with Florida last season, recording career highs in points (28) and assists (24). He posted a career high five-game assist streak Oct. 31-Nov. 10, while notching a career best with three points (1-2-3) on Dec. 5 in Florida s 5-4 win against Washington.

7 NEW FACES The Panthers are expected to have several new faces in their line-up tonight including off-season free agent acquisitions C Peter Mueller, RW George Parros and D Filip Kuba. Mueller most recently spent the last three years with Colorado, while Parros spent nearly six years with Anaheim. Kuba returns to Florida s blue line after being drafted the Panthers in 1995 and spending time with Minnesota, Tampa Bay and Ottawa. CAROLINA CONNECTIONS Head Coach Kevin Dineen played for the Carolina franchise from and then again from D Tyson Strachan never played a game for the Hurricanes, but was drafted by Carolina in the fifth round (137th overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. WITH HONORS D Brian Campbell completed his first season with the Panthers with accolades. He represented Florida at the 2012 NHL All-Star and was awarded the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy at the 2012 NHL Awards. In addition, Executive VP/GM Dale Tallon was named one of three finalists for the NHL s Executive of the Year. Since joining the Panthers in May 2010, Tallon has been responsible for reshaping the club s hockey operations department, as well as the team s player personnel. In just two years, he assembled a team which finished the season with a mark and 94 points its most since totaling 98 points in ( ). 10 Florida Panthers: Head Coach and Player Bios Head Coach: Kevin Dineen In his first season behind the bench, Kevin Dineen led the Florida Panthers to their first Southeast Division title in franchise history. Under Dineen s leadership, Florida finished the season with a mark, to earn its first playoff berth since In the 2012 post season the Panthers forced the eventual Eastern Conference Champion New Jersey Devils to seven games, before losing in double overtime. Prior to joining Florida, Dineen spent six seasons as head coach of the Portland Pirates (AHL), where he compiled a record of with a.616 winning percentage.
