1 a COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS 2009 DEVELOPMENT CAMP MEDIA GUIDE COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS HOCKEY OPERATIONS SCOTT HOWSON, General Manager Scott Howson was named the second general manager in Columbus Blue Jackets history on June 15, 2007 and oversees all aspects of the club s hockey operations efforts. Since his arrival, the Blue Jackets have enjoyed the best two seasons in franchise history. Following an 80 point-season in , the Jackets went for a club record 92 points and earned the first Stanley Cup Playoffs berth in franchise history in Howson came to Columbus after spending seven years with the Edmonton Oilers. He joined the Oilers in June 2000 as assistant to the general manager and was named assistant general manager a year later. In that role, he was responsible for all aspects of the club s hockey administration, including player contracts, personnel decisions, the collective bargaining agreement, its American Hockey League affiliates and the salary cap. During his six seasons with the Oilers, the club posted five-straight winning campaigns from , averaged 37 wins and 89 points per season, topped 90 points four times and advanced to the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals, where they were defeated in seven games by the Carolina Hurricanes. Prior to his arrival in Edmonton, Howson spent six years with the Oilers American Hockey League affiliates. As general manager of the Cape Breton Oilers from , he oversaw the franchise s move to Hamilton in 1996 and was the Bulldogs general manager from During that time, he led Hamilton to a pair of berths in the Calder Cup Finals (1997, 2003) and a conference semi-finals appearance in Born on April 9, 1960 in Toronto, Ontario, Howson played three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League as a forward with the Kingston Canadiens from , serving as team captain and earning OHL All-Star honors. Following his junior career, he signed a free agent contract with the New York Islanders and spent the next five years playing at various levels throughout the organization. During his rookie season in , he was named the International Hockey League s Rookie of the Year after registering in 71 games with the Toledo Goaldiggers. He was the league s second-leading scorer that year and helped Toledo capture the league championship. Howson also won a Central Hockey League title with the Indianapolis Checkers in He made his NHL debut with the Islanders during the season and tallied and two penalty minutes in eight games. He added and two penalty minutes in 10 games the following season before retiring as a player in Howson earned his bachelor s degree in 1987 from York University and is a 1990 graduate of the university s Osgoode Hall Law School. He and his wife, Antoinette Mongillo, are the parents of a son, Max, and daughters, Rebekah and Joanna. CHRIS MacFARLAND, Assistant General Manager Chris MacFarland has been a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets hockey operations department since prior to the NHL season and was named assistant general manager of the club in July MacFarland is responsible for assisting General Manager Scott Howson in all hockey-related matters including scouting, contract negotiations, salary cap management, collective bargaining agreement administration and salary arbitration. He is also responsible for overseeing the hockey operations efforts of the club s minor league affiliates the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League and Johnstown Chiefs of the ECHL. He originally joined the Blue Jackets in 1999, served as the club s manager of hockey operations from and was promoted to the position of assistant to the general manager in July MacFarland was born on March 28, 1970 in the Bronx, New York. He played college hockey at Pace University, where he received a bachelor s degree in business in 1992 and graduated from the university's law school in MacFarland and his wife, Chandra, are the parents of sons, Jake, Gavin and Sawyer, and daughter, Cara. The family resides in Powell. DON BOYD, Director of Hockey Operations and Player Personnel Don Boyd is the Director of Hockey Operations and Player Personnel for the Columbus Blue Jackets. He has been a member of the organization since 1999 and was named Director of Player Personnel in August In his current role, he works directly with General Manager Scott Howson on all issues related to the club s player personnel including player evaluation and player assignments within the organization, the NHL entry draft, player movement and free agency. He is responsible for the development, implementation and oversight of the club s amateur and pro player evaluation programs in North America and Europe. In addition, he oversees the prospects development program at the minor professional and amateur levels and works with Howson and Ken Hitchcock in the coordination of the club s main training camp, as well as all rookie and development camps. Boyd has three decades of experience as a hockey executive, coach and scout at the college, major junior and professional levels. He spent his first six seasons with the Blue Jackets as the club's director of amateur scouting and was responsible for overseeing all amateur scouting efforts by the club in North America and Europe. He joined the club after serving as an amateur scout with the St. Louis Blues, Ottawa Senators and Quebec Nordiques. He is also a former head coach of Regina of the Western Hockey League ( ), head coach and general manager of London ( ), Sault Ste. Marie ( ) and New Market/Sarnia ( ) of the Ontario Hockey League. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Michigan ( ) and was an assistant coach at the University of North Dakota ( ). A native of Dryden, Ontario, Boyd is a 1976 graduate of Bowling Green State University, where he played varsity hockey. He also received his master s of education degree from the University of North Dakota in He and his wife, Linda, are the parents of daughter, Melissa, a graduate of Bowling Green State University; and son Josh, who is currently attending BGSU and is a member of the varsity hockey team. The family resides in Columbus.

2 COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS DEVELOPMENT CAMP COACHING STAFF KEN HITCHCOCK, Head Coach Ken Hitchcock was named the fourth head coach in Columbus Blue Jackets history on Nov. 22, He has compiled a record in 983 regular season games with the Blue Jackets, Philadelphia Flyers and Dallas Stars during his NHL coaching career. In 11 full seasons behind the bench, he has led his teams to nine Stanley Cup Playoffs appearances, six division titles (Dallas, Central Division: ; Philadelphia, Atlantic Division: ) and a pair of second place finishes, while recording at least 40 wins nine times and 100 points on eight occasions. He has also led his teams to a record in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, including a 16-7 mark in when he guided the Stars to the Stanley Cup. Hitchcock has compiled a record in 226 games since joining the Blue Jackets, leading the club to its first Stanley Cup Playoffs appearance with a franchise-best record (92 pts.) in He became the 13th coach in NHL history to record 500 wins when the Jackets earned a 4-3 shootout win at Toronto on Feb. 19, 2009 and currently stands 11th on the all-time wins list. On Apr. 5, 2008 at St. Louis, he became the 20th coach in NHL history to coach in 900 or more games. Hitchcock began his professional coaching career as an assistant coach with the Flyers from before spending two-plus seasons as the head coach of the Kalamazoo Wings/Michigan K-Wings, Dallas International Hockey League affiliate. He took over as head coach of the Stars midway through the season and in led them to the Central Division title. That year, Dallas became just the ninth team in NHL history to go from last place to first place in one season. The club s 38-point improvement from 66 to 104 was tied for the fifth-best in league history. Hitchcock spent parts of five seasons in Dallas, compiling a regular season record and playoff mark. He led his teams to five Central Division titles, two President s Trophies ( , ) and two Western Conference championships (1999, 2000) in addition to the 1999 Stanley Cup. He holds Stars franchise records for wins (277), playoff wins (47), playoff winning percentage (.588) and in led the club to franchise single season records for wins, points and highest winning percentage with a mark and 114 points (.695). He was nominated for the Jack Adams Award three times (1997, 1998, 1999) and served as the Western Conference s head coach in three All-Star Games (1997, 1998, 1999). On May 14, 2002, he was named Flyers head coach and led the club to a record and a mark in the playoffs. Philadelphia posted three-straight 100-point seasons from , captured the Atlantic Division title in and advanced to the 2004 Eastern Conference Finals. On Mar. 21, 2006, Hitchcock guided the Flyers to a 2-1 win over New Jersey, becoming the fifthfastest coach in NHL history to record 400 wins (736 games). He served as an assistant coach at the 2003 and 2004 All-Star Games. Hitchcock has also represented Canada at numerous international competitions. He was named head coach of Team Canada for the 2008 World Championships and led the squad to the silver medal. He also served as an associate coach for Team Canada at the 2002 and 2006 Olympic Games, winning the gold medal at the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City. He helped Team Canada win the World Cup of Hockey Tournament in 2004 as an associate coach and was an assistant on gold medal-winning squads at the 2002 World Championships and the 1987 World Junior Championships. Prior to joining the professional ranks, Hitchcock was one of the winningest coaches in the history of the Western Hockey League. From , he led the Kamloops Blazers to a record with his.693 winning percentage ranking second in WHL history. He was the league s Coach of the Year in and and was also named the Canadian Major Junior Coach of the Year in after leading Kamloops to the WHL championship and a third place finish in the Memorial Cup Tournament. 3 CLAUDE NOEL, Assistant Coach Claude Noel joined the Columbus Blue Jackets as an assistant coach on June 28, 2007, after spending four seasons as the head coach of the Milwaukee Admirals, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Nashville Predators. During that time, he led the club to a regular season record, three 100-point seasons and two West Division titles. He also compiled a record in the Calder Cup Playoffs, including two appearances in the Finals (2004, 2006). During the season, the club compiled a record and went 16-6 in the playoffs en route to capturing the organization s first Calder Cup championship. That year, Noel was named the AHL s Coach of the Year. Noel, 51, made his coaching debut in the ECHL with the Roanoke Valley Rebels in and served as the head coach and director of hockey operations of the ECHL s Dayton Bombers from In 1993, he joined the Kalamazoo Wings (later Michigan K-Wings), International Hockey League affiliate of the Dallas Stars, as an assistant coach to current Blue Jackets Head Coach Ken Hitchcock. He succeeded Hitchcock behind the bench during the season and served in that capacity through the campaign. From , he was an assistant coach with the Admirals and in was named ECHL Coach of the Year with the Toledo Storm before returning to Milwaukee as head coach prior to the season. A native of Kirkland, Ontario, Noel appeared in seven games as a forward with the Washington Capitals during the season. He spent most of his playing career in the AHL and IHL and was named the latter s Most Valuable Player in after leading the Toledo Goaldiggers to the Turner Cup championship. He wrapped up his playing career with Milwaukee in Noel and his wife, Lynda, are the parents of sons, Christopher and Sheldon. TYLER WRIGHT, Development Coach Former Columbus Blue Jackets center Tyler Wright rejoined the organization s hockey operations department in July 2007 when he was named development coach for the club. In his role he primarily will work with young players throughout the organization, assisting with the development of prospects playing in the professional minor leagues, various major junior leagues and college hockey. Wright was selected by Columbus in the 2000 Expansion Draft and spent four-plus seasons with the club. He registered 57 goals and 51 assists for 108 points with 436 penalty minutes in 309 games as a Blue Jacket and ranks second on the club in career penalty minutes and fourth in games played. He also served as an alternate captain during the , and seasons. His best campaign was the inaugural season when he posted a career-high and a teamleading 140 penalty minutes. He appeared in 613 games in 13 NHL seasons, tallying and 854 penalty minutes with the Blue Jackets, Anaheim Ducks, Pittsburgh Penguins and Edmonton Oilers. Edmonton s first pick, 12 th overall, in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft, he also represented Team Canada at the 1992 and 1993 (gold medal) World Junior Championships and 2002 World Championships. Wright was born on April 6, 1973 in Kamsack, Saskatchewan. He and his wife, Christina, are the parents of daughters, Kennady and Ava, and son, Tanner. BARRY BRENNAN, Strength and Conditioning Coach Barry Brennan joined the Columbus Blue Jackets as strength and conditioning coach prior to the season. He is responsible for designing, implementing and monitoring the team s training programs, while overseeing off-ice training and physical testing sessions with potential draft prospects. He joined the club after spending four years as a strength and conditioning coach with the Syracuse Crunch, where he worked under current Blue Jackets Assistant Coach Gary Agnew. Prior to joining the organization, he held the position under Hall of Fame Head Coach and General Manager Brian Kilrea of the Ottawa 67s (OHL). During his tenure, the 67s won numerous division, conference and league championships and made two Memorial Cup Appearances. A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Brennan is a Certified Specialist in Sport Conditioning (SSC) through the International Sports Science Association. In addition, he is a registered coach with Boxing Ontario and the Canadian Boxing Association and is also recognized by the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), Hockey Canada's Trainer Certification Program (HTCP) and a professional member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He resides in Columbus.
