Green's Comets finished the year as Western Conference regular season champions with a (.678%) record. In his inaugural season, , he pioneered the squad to a (0.519%) record and narrowly missed out on a playoff berth. He was named the first head coach in Comets history on July 11, Prior to joining the Comets, Green spent four seasons with the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey. The Castlegar, BC native was originally hired by the Winterhawks as assistant coach and assistant general manager for the season. In November of 2012, Green was named interim head coach following the suspension of Mike Johnston (now the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins). Under Green's tutelage, the Winterhawks compiled a record and captured the WHL Championship. The Green-led Winterhawks ultimately fell to the Halifax Mooseheads in the Memorial Cup Finals. During his playing career, Green spent a little more than two seasons apprenticing in the American Hockey, all with the Capital District Islanders. Green is one of three current AHL head coaches that played together with the Capital District Islanders in (Dean Chynoweth - Lake Erie/ Derek Laxdal - Texas). Green graduated to the NHL after 20 games in the season and went on to play nearly 1,000 NHL games with the New York Islanders, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Phoenix Coyotes, Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins, and tallied 193 goals and 455 total points. Green s best season was the campaign with the Islanders, when he notched career-highs of 25 goals, 45 assists and 70 total points, along with 14 power-play goals. He had 23 goals and 64 points the following season, and matched his career-high with 25 goals during the season with the Phoenix Coyotes. He finished his playing career in Switzerland, where he had nine goals and 20 points for EV Zug in the season. Green was taken 23rd overall by the New York Islanders in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft after scoring 51 goals for the WHL's Spokane Chiefs. He returned for one last season of junior hockey and combined for 60 goals with the Chiefs and the Medicine Hat Tigers. 2 PAUL JERRARD Paul Jerrard, 50, was part of the Vancouver Canucks original hires for the Utica Comets coaching staff prior to the season. He was hired on August 12, 2013 to join Travis Green's staff. The Comets are the fifth American Hockey franchise in which Jerrard worked with during their inaugural season, after starting up the Lowell Lock Monsters ( ), the Iowa Stars ( ), the Iowa Chops ( ) and the Texas Stars ( ). Prior to joining the Comets, Jerrard spent the previous two seasons as Glen Gulutzan's assistant with the NHL's Dallas Stars. Jerrard also worked on Gulutzan's staff with the AHL's Texas Stars. He helped the Texas Stars reach the playoffs in both campaigns, including the Stars run to the Calder Cup Finals in the franchise s inaugural season of Jerrard assisted Texas in posting a cumulative record (.587 points percentage) during the regular season and a (.533 winning percentage) record during the playoffs with Texas. The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native boasts a decade of coaching experience, including two years as an assistant coach with the Hershey Bears of the AHL prior to joining the Dallas Stars organization as an assistant with the Iowa Stars (AHL) for three seasons ( ). In , Jerrard was responsible for video content as the Colorado Avalanche's assistant coach. He also coached for four years at his alma mater, Lake Superior State University. Prior to joining Lake Superior State, Jerrard spent one year as assistant coach with Lowell in Jerrard spent 10 years as a defenseman in professional hockey, having been drafted by the New York Rangers in the ninth round (173rd overall) of the 1983 Entry Draft. He was traded to the Minnesota North Stars in October of 1988 and skated in five games for Minnesota that season. Jerrard played parts of six seasons with Kalamazoo (IHL) and was a member of the 1997 Calder Cup-winning Hershey Bears. Jerrard is certified in strength and conditioning (CSCS) and is a member of the National Strength Coaches Association (NSCA). Paul and his wife Cheryl have two children, Meaghan and Catherine. 3 NOLAN BAUMGARTNER ASSISTANT COACH Baumgartner, 39, is in his second season as a Utica Comets assistant coach and third season as an assistant coach with the Canucks AHL affiliate. Prior to being named assistant coach with the AHL's Chicago Wolves to start the season, Baumgartner completed a 17-year professional playing career where he served in a leadership role as captain of both the Chicago Wolves and Manitoba Moose. In 143 career regular season NHL games, Baumgartner recorded 47 points ( ) and 69 penalty minutes with Washington, Chicago, Vancouver, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Dallas. The Calgary, AB, native played 878 regular season AHL games while he earned 390 points ( ) and 815 penalty minutes. He also accumulated 29 points ( ) and 85 penalty minutes in 86 career Calder Cup playoff outings, including an appearance in the 2009 Calder Cup Final as a member of the Manitoba Moose. Playing on a deep defense corps that featured three NHL draftees and highly-regarded 2012-eligible Griffin Reinhart, Sautner scored 2 goals with 10 assists and was plus-29 with 38 penalty minutes. The Oil Kings finished with the WHL s best record and rolled through the playoffs. In 19 playoff games he had 2 assists and was plus-eight with 10 penalty minutes. Sautner appeared in all four Memorial Cup games and was plus-one. The Oil Kings went 1-3 at the tournament, with their lone win coming against eventual champ Shawinigan. Sautner was ranked 92nd amongst North American skaters in Central Scouting s final rankings prior to the 2012 NHL Draft : Sautner returned to Moose Jaw for a second season of midget hockey with the re-named Generals in the SMHL.
