Anaheim Ducks What we learned from Ducks' 4-2 win over the Kings Curtis Zupke Like a greyhound chasing the rabbit on the track, the Ducks are inching toward the Kings in the Pacific Division. A 4-2 win Sunday brought the Ducks to two points behind the first-place Kings. The Ducks are since Christmas and in their last 17 games, while the Kings five-game point streak came to a grinding halt. Here s what we learned: There is no end in sight for this Ducks run Anaheim is two wins shy of its franchise-record 10-game streak from December of Its power play is 17-for-57 in the last 15 games, and it has held opponents to a team-record 142 goals through 61 games. See the most-read stories in Sports this hour >> To think, the Ducks were 16 points behind the Kings on Jan. 12. We trusted this team, Ducks defenseman Sami Vatanen said. We knew when we get everybody buying in and doing things, and we get a couple of bounces, it will turn around and we will have the success that we have right now. The Kings are showing signs of wear They were an NHL-best in the second game of a back-to-back set before Sunday. Kings Coach Darryl Sutter cites the schedule frequently as a factor, and he brought it up again after the game. We made some tired mistakes, Sutter said. I think guys looked a little gassed... it s going to happen when you get caught in a turnaround against a good team like that. The Ducks are against the Kings in the regular season since the season. Of course, the Kings eliminated the Ducks in seven games in the 2014 conference semifinals. Said Anze Kopitar, Our game overall has to be better if we want to beat this team. Ryan Kesler is fine Kesler threw a scare into all in attendance when he was struck by Jake Muzzin's slap shot in the final seconds and lay prone for about a minute before he got up off the ice. "He's sore, obviously," Ducks Coach Bruce Boudreau said. "The puck hit him in the upper region. But he's a tough competitor and he's going to be fine." LA Times: LOADED:

Anaheim Ducks NHL trade deadline lacks sizzle, but Anaheim Ducks add depth Helene Elliott Helene ElliottContact Reporter Blame Chicago Blackhawks General Manager Stan Bowman for turning Monday's trade deadline into a dud, with a nod to Florida Panthers GM Dale Tallon for also getting a jump on the trade action and diminishing the drama of the final hours. Bowman, aiming at a fourth Stanley Cup championship in seven seasons, made his big moves last week by acquiring left wing Andrew Ladd from the Winnipeg Jets and forwards Tomas Fleischmann and Dale Weise from the Montreal Canadiens. Tallon, hoping for a big playoff run while 44-year-old Jaromir Jagr is still young and productive, made a series of go-for-it-now deals last week by trading draft picks for forwards Jiri Hudler and Teddy Purcell and defenseman Jakub Kindl. Two Sunday deals the Kings' acquisition of left wing Kris Versteeg from the Carolina Hurricanes to fill a top-six role while Marian Gaborik's injured knee heals, and the New York Rangers' trade with Carolina for forward Eric Staal also left few impact moves Monday among 19 deals involving 37 players. See the most-read stories in Sports this hour >> Of those mentioned most often in trade rumors only shot-blocking defenseman Kris Russell was traded, sent from the fading Calgary Flames to the aspiring Dallas Stars for defenseman Jyrki Jokipakka, center Brett Pollock and a conditional second-round 2016 draft pick that will become a first-rounder if the Stars reach the Western Conference finals and Russell plays half their games in the first two rounds. "He plays hard. He's a little ball of hate," Stars General Manager Jim Nill told reporters in Dallas. Defenseman Dan Hamhuis stayed with the Vancouver Canucks. Forward Loui Eriksson stayed with the Boston Bruins. Jonathan Drouin, suspended by the Tampa Bay Lightning in January, stayed at home in Montreal. However, Lightning General Manager Steve Yzerman told the Tampa Bay Times, "If he wants to come back, the door is open. That's up to him." The surging Ducks got the depth up front they had sought, but their go-for-it run was built on keeping their young defense corps intact at least for now. They sent a sixth-round pick to the Panthers for Brandon Pirri, who had 22 goals in 49 games last season but has an injured ankle, and got left wing Jamie McGinn from the Buffalo Sabres for a conditional third-round 2016 draft pick. The pick will become a second-rounder in 2017 if the Ducks reach the West finals and McGinn plays half their games in the first two rounds. McGinn is a pending unrestricted free agent; Pirri is a pending restricted free agent. "Chicago went and made their moves early. Florida did some things early. San Jose did some things early. So I think what we're seeing is that the trade deadline has now been extended," Ducks General Manager Bob Murray said. "Teams are trying to jump early into doing things so it's not just this one big day." Faced with a logjam up front that will grow with the return of Shawn Horcoff (suspension) and Chris Stewart (fractured jaw), Murray traded left wing Patrick Maroon to the Edmonton Oilers for minor league defenseman Martin Gernat and a fourth-round draft pick. Maroon had two seasons left at a cap hit of $2 million per season, so Murray saved money to spend on retaining some of his impending restricted free agents. He also sent right wing Tim Jackman and a seventh-round pick in 2017 to Chicago for minor league forward Corey Tropp. "I'm comfortable with not screwing up the chemistry too much," Murray said, mindful that it took months for his team to mesh before its current eight-game winning streak and push. "I think both are very good kids, get along with everybody and they're both very excited to be coming here. I think this works, this fits. We're deeper and we're very versatile." Corey Perry and the Ducks are flying high because they refused to give up on themselves Murray said he will have a better estimate on Pirri's recovery after Pirri is examined by team medical personnel Tuesday. McGinn is also due to arrive Tuesday and is expected to play Wednesday. Kings General Manager Dean Lombardi, who said the goal for Gaborik's return "would be sometime a little prior to the playoffs," praised Bowman's shrewdness but said he didn't feel pressured to match Bowman's splashy moves. "He's really good at what he does," Lombardi said. "No doubt about it. It didn't surprise me one bit. But is that going to make us go out and say we've got to do this, that? No. I think that's dangerous. You've got to look at your team and it's always been, how good are we? Yes, you look at your matchups but I think you start getting into that, you might be throwing around first-rounders before you know it." In a trade more interesting than strategic, the Kings acquired minor league center Brett Sutter son of Coach Darryl Sutter from the Minnesota Wild for right wing Scott Sabourin. Assistant GM Rob Blake suggested it, valuing Brett's work ethic and influence on young teammates. Genetics helped too. "He ain't going to cheat you, that's for sure," Lombardi said. Rob Scuderi helps Kings take down the Sabres, 2-0, in his first game back with L.A. That's one of the few sure things about any of Monday's moves. Slap Shots The eight teams in the World Cup of Hockey will announce their rosters of at least 16 players Wednesday.... Nashville Predators forward Filip Forsberg had two natural hat tricks in three games last week to help the Predators build a four-game winning streak and improve to in their last 10, giving them a solid hold on a West wild-card spot.... Neutral arbitrator James Oldham is expected to issue his ruling next week on Calgary defenseman Dennis Wideman's appeal of his 20-game suspension for cross-checking linesman Don Henderson. 7 Anaheim Ducks Ducks beef up forward mix by trading for Sabres winger Jamie McGinn Feb. 29, 2016 Updated 1:22 p.m. By ERIC STEPHENS / STAFF WRITER After acquiring Brandon Pirri from Florida, the Ducks continued to strength their forward mix by getting left wing Jamie McGinn from the Buffalo Sabres for a conditional 2016 draft pick. Several reports are that the pick is a third-round selection that can become a second-round pick in 2017 if the Ducks win two rounds in this year's Stanley Cup playoffs and McGinn plays in at least half of those games in those two rounds. The Ducks didn't have a second-round pick this year which they sent to Vancouver to acquire defenseman Kevin Bieksa but had an extra third-round pick to use as currency in a deal. McGinn, 27, had 14 goals and 13 assists in 63 games with the Sabres this season. A potential unrestricted free agent this summer, the eight-year veteran has had extensive time playing in the Western Conference with San Jose and Colorado before joining Buffalo this season. McGinn appeared in 29 playoff games with the Sharks and Avalanche and had two goals and three assists over seven games in Colorado s 2014 first-round loss to Minnesota. When the Sabres played in Anaheim last week, McGinn acknowledged that his name was in trade rumors but said he couldn't get caught up in worrying about whether he would be moved. If you start doing that, then you re not focusing on hockey, McGinn told the Register. My job is to play hockey. If I m focusing on trades or signing or stuff like that, then I can be distracted on the ice. You pay an agent for a reason, to deal with these things. I m paid to play hockey so I m just trying to keep my mind clear. Obviously you re aware of it but you can t let it affect you or then your game is going to hamper. Orange County Register: LOADED:

Anaheim Ducks Ducks add Panthers' Brandon Pirri ahead of NHL trade deadline Feb. 29, 2016 Updated 12:53 p.m. By ERIC STEPHENS / STAFF WRITER The Ducks added an offensive-minded player to their forward ranks by acquiring Brandon Pirri from the Florida Panthers for a sixth-round pick in this year s NHL draft. Pirri, 24, had 11 goals and 13 assists in 52 games with the Panthers this season. Known as a streaky scorer, Pirri had a career-high 22 goals and just two assists in Pirri is currently recovering from an ankle injury suffered when he was driven into the boards during a Feb. 13 game against Nashville. No longer on crutches, the former Chicago Blackhawks second-round pick may be ready to resume skating soon. Pirri joins a list of Ducks players who can become restricted free agents this summer. The forward is eligible for salary arbitration. Orange County Register: LOADED:

Anaheim Ducks Ducks handle Kings: What you need to know Feb. 28, 2016 Updated Feb. 29, :59 a.m. By ERIC STEPHENS / STAFF WRITER ANAHEIM Here s what you need to know about the Ducks 4-2 win over the Kings on Sunday night: THE GAME IN 140 CHARACTERS OR FEWER - A rock em, sock em start was riveting but the Kings were no match for a scorching Ducks power play and Corey Perry s nose for the net. QUOTE OF THE NIGHT Of course it s a big game for us. Every time we play against L.A. It always gets everybody going and there s emotions on the ice and it s a fast game. It s a pleasure to play these games when it s against them. - Ducks defenseman Sami Vatanen STAT OF THE NIGHT - The Ducks have scored power-play goals in eight straight games and are 13-for-28 over that span. PLAYER OF THE GAME - Corey Perry. You can t ignore three goals and an assist on the fourth one. ANALYSIS - The Ducks are coming up on Monday s NHL trade deadline and they ve been in the hunt to add a forward. But a trade for a forward they made six weeks ago continues to pay off big for them. David Perron has not only had seven goals and 16 points in 18 games but he s also recorded a plus-14 rating. He has as many points as he had in 43 games with Pittsburgh before the trade. And it isn t just the numbers. The winger is a constant presence around the net. He goes there and stays there, giving the Ducks someone else that s consistently willing to do that other than Perry. Not only was going back-and-forth with Jonathan Quick in the first period but he was beating the great Kings goalie with a big insurance goal in the third. And his presence has allowed Coach Bruce Boudreau to keep Perry and Ryan Getzlaf on different lines, giving the Ducks the ability to provide offense from three groupings or, at the very least, two and a dedicated shutdown line that can still chip in goals from time to time. Maybe another forward is needed Ryan Garbutt was spending time on the top line Sunday but Ducks GM Bob Murray might be wise to do whatever he can to avoid using a roster player to get that extra scorer. The feeling is that any conversation that includes defenseman Shea Theodore or their first-round pick is a short one. But the six the Ducks are employing on defense shouldn t be tinkered with. Sami Vatanen had two assists and is an integral part of a white-hot power play. Maybe there is a problem reaching a deal on a long-term contract extension but Murray can continue to work on that after the season and if there is an impasse, then a trade could be pursued over the summer perhaps at the June draft. And they'll eventually get Chris Stewart back, a fractured jaw healed. There s no sense in breaking up the band now. KEY MOMENT - Ducks goalie John Gibson shook off a bad bounce that led to Tanner Pearson s opportunistic goal by making his best save, a sprawling left pad stop on a redirect try by Anze Kopitar. It kept them within a goal, which was important as Corey Perry forged a 2-2 tie late in the second with his quick hands in grabbing Cam Fowler s errant slap shot off the end boards and putting the puck in off Kings goalie Jonathan Quick. ANY NEWS? - The Kings acquired winger Kris Versteeg from Carolina for prospect Valentin Zykov and a conditional fifth-round draft pick. Versteeg had 11 goals and 22 assists for the Hurricanes this season. - Ducks center Ryan Kesler was struck by a slap shot right at the end of the game. Kesler stayed down on the ice and was attended to by the training staff but left the ice under his own power. Coach Bruce Boudreau reported that he was fine afterward. MORE POSTGAME QUOTES RYAN GETZLAF (on the victory ) I thought we controlled our emotions for the most part. Got into a little bit of penalty trouble at the start but that s kind of natural in a game like this. Power play responded well again. I thought our group held it together throughout the whole game. (on the Ducks and Kings being neck and neck for rest of season ) Yeah. No one s going to run away with this thing. We re going to be in a battle down to the end here. It s great to be able to compete with a team like that on a nightly basis. We got a couple more against them, I think. It d be good getting ready for the playoffs. (on getting four goals against Kings ) We ve been playing good hockey against them as of late. Tonight, I thought we put a 60-minute effort together and came out with some results. (on the third period ) I like the way we responded all night, to tell you the truth. There was ups and downs throughout the game. They played really well. Hard-fought game. Obviously we were fortunate to come out on this side of it. (on if they pay attention to the standings ) We notice it. The standings are posted everywhere. I ve said repeatedly in the last couple of weeks, it s just about playing. We re trying to get our game to where it needs to be on a consistent basis and we ve been doing a good job of that lately. COREY PERRY (on the game ) "We had three power-play goals so our power play was working tonight. It s a close checking game out there when you play those guys. It s a man s game. You got to be ready to play." (on whether he considered it a big game ) It s a huge game. When you re chasing them for first in the division, these points mean everything down the stretch. You re jostling for playoff position. We put ourselves in a good spot just to continue and keep pushing forward. (on if he thought being in their position was possible ) We dug ourselves a hole. We found a way to get out of it. Everybody s contributing and playing their role. Everybody s found a spot on this team to go out there and do the right things. It s working. SAMI VATANEN (on battling the Kings for the division the rest of the way ) That s what I ve read. I ve read that we re pretty close to each other right now. I haven t checked the standings in a little while. We just try to focus on one game at a time and try to win that." (on if he surprised their winning run has kept going ) We trusted this team. We knew when we get everybody buying in and doing thing and we d get a couple bounces, it will turn around and we will have the success like we have right now. BRUCE BOUDREAU (on being two points back of first place ) I think we re obviously cognizant of where we are in the standings. But I don t think it s the be-all, end-all. We just want to play good. We won a couple games there when we didn t play good but when we played the better teams, we thought we d step it up. That was a playoff game out there today and both teams played like it. (on cutting into the Kings division lead ) When you re living in the moment, you don t really notice it. This is something you ll notice in three years. We re near the top of the mountain, but we re not at the top of the mountain yet. We have to keep persevering. DREW DOUGHTY (on the goal that was waved off.) We were prepared for it. It didn t count. We were going to come back and try to get another one right away on the power play. It should ve been a little longer of a power play, but I could be wrong. We were determined to go back out there and get another one, but we weren t able to. (on the Kings penalty killing )

Bearing down around our net and getting pucks out. It s the same old thing. It s about getting pucks out, blocking shots, and not letting them bend goals in around the net, and they were able to do that tonight. POSTGAME NOTES The Ducks were credited with 41 hits to the Kings 35. Josh Manson, Ryan Kesler and Nate Thompson each had five. Kesler also went 16-for-23 in the faceoff circle and led Ducks forward with 21:36 ice time. Corey Perry scored on three of his four shots on goal, getting his ninth career hat trick. Jakob Silfverberg attempted nine shots but missed the net on five and had two blocked. Ryan Getzlaf had an assist to extend his point streak to 11 games. Cam Fowler has eight assists in his last games and is a plus-6 over his last nine. Kings defenseman Jake Muzzin has seven shots on goal and a team-leading six hits. Jonathan Quick stopped 25 of 29 shots for the Kings. Tanner Pearson has three goals in his last two games and 11 for the season. 11 Anaheim Ducks Ducks make flurry of deals at NHL trading deadline Feb. 29, 2016 Updated 9:53 p.m. By ERIC STEPHENS / STAFF WRITER DEALING DUCKS The Ducks made four moves before Monday's trade deadline: Acquired F Jamie McGinn from Buffalo for a conditional third-round draft pick. Acquired F Brandon Pirri from Florida for a 2016 sixth-round draft pick. Traded LW Patrick Maroon to Edmonton for a 2016 fourth-round pick and D Martin Gernat. Traded F Tim Jackman and a 2017 seventh-round pick to Chicago for F Corey Tropp. PLAYER CAPSULES Scouting reports on the key players involved in the Ducks' deals Monday: COMING Jamie McGinn, LW: Gritty winger had 14 goals with Buffalo this season and will add some touch around the net. Likely rental for Ducks, but knows the Western Conference from days in San Jose and Colorado. Brandon Pirri, F: Streaky scorer can play on the wing but has some experience at center. Had a career-high 22 goals last season but became expendable when Florida traded for Jiri Hudler and Teddy Purcell. GOING Patrick Maroon, LW: Big winger provided protection for skilled players but had trouble finishing at times and couldn't stick on top two lines. Slumped this season after strong 2015 playoffs in Ducks' run to West final. ERIC STEPHENS Bob Murray wasn t going to sit this NHL trade deadline out, and the general manager s work Monday was about what he could get for his ascending Ducks and what he would keep. Jamie McGinn and Brandon Pirri are coming in. Patrick Maroon is heading out. Sami Vatanen, Shea Theodore or Brandon Montour are not going anywhere. Already emboldened by how the January deals for David Perron and Ryan Garbutt have fared, Murray beefed up his forward mix by acquiring McGinn from the Buffalo Sabres and Pirri from the Florida Panthers. The prices paid weren t costly. To get McGinn, the Ducks sent a conditional third-round pick for this year s draft that can become a second-rounder in 2017 if they advance to the conference finals and McGinn plays in at least half of their playoff games. And in Pirri s case, Murray only had to part with a 2016 sixth-round selection. McGinn, 27, had 14 goals and 13 assists in 63 games with Buffalo this season while Pirri, who s recovering from an ankle injury, had 11 goals and 13 assists in 52 games with Florida. I m comfortable with not screwing up the chemistry too much, Murray said. I don t think we did too much. I think both young men we re bringing in are from doing our homework and our due diligence very good kids who get along with everybody, and they re both very excited to be coming here. Again, you can do too much. I think this works. This fits. We re deeper and we re very versatile. McGinn is expected to make his Ducks debut Wednesday when they host Montreal. He s a potential unrestricted free agent who s a likely rental who might re-sign with the Sabres this summer, but the winger has played in the postseason with San Jose and Colorado. And that matters to Murray, who monitored the gritty forward closely when Buffalo made its three-game California trip last week. He fits with how we play out here right now, Murray said. We know he can play in the West, let s just put it that way. Pirri, 24, has been out since Feb. 13 when he suffered an ankle injury in a game against Nashville. He had a career-high 22 goals last season and Murray said he believes the winger will resume skating in the coming days and might be ready within two weeks. The only roster player Murray was willing to part with was Maroon, who struggled this season after posting a career-high 34 points in He had four goals, nine assists and a minus-13 rating. The Ducks are getting defenseman prospect Martin Gernat and a fourth-round pick from the Edmonton Oilers. And there is a financial benefit. The Ducks retained 25 percent of Maroon s salary but will shed $1.5 million in each of the next two seasons, which could aid Murray in signing a key potential restricted free agents. Vatanen, Hampus Lindholm, Rickard Rakell and Frederik Andersen are all on that important list. When we made a couple of moves here today, we had too many forwards here basically, so Patrick was available, Murray said. I called (Edmonton GM) Peter (Chiarelli), and it kind of fits into what he s trying to add to the organization there, so he moved pretty quickly. This is a good move for Patrick Maroon, and that s kind of what I was looking for when I did it. There was interest on their part in forwards such as Andrew Ladd, Eric Staal, Loui Eriksson and current holdout Jonathan Drouin. But when it came to being asked about current defender Vatanen or high-end prospects such as Theodore or Montour, Murray said no. Vatanen is the Ducks top scorer on their blue line with nine goals and 34 points. He ll be due a huge raise one report had him asking for a six-year deal at $6 million per season, which the Ducks strongly denied but Murray will take another swing at that contract negotiation later. I had lots of calls on certain people on the back end, Murray said. I ve got lots of thinking to do about our defensive corps in the next four months. I wasn t doing anything today. I want to have a long, hard look at what we ve got going forward. After the Ducks 4-2 win Sunday over the Kings, Vatanen said he s concerned only with what occurs on the ice with his teammates. You hear all kinds of things when you come to the rink like that, he said. It s out of my hands. I can t do anything about that. I can just focus on coming to the rink and enjoy it. Having fun with the boys and play my best. I want to be a Duck. That s my first thing what I want to do. It s been my favorite team. That s on my mind. To be here for a long time would be a dream come true. The Ducks also traded winger Tim Jackman and a 2017 seventh-round selection to Chicago for minor-league forward Corey Tropp. Jackman had not been with the club since being put on waivers in November and assigned to San Diego (AHL). Forwards Harry Zolnierczyk was also sent back to San Diego, while Nick Ritchie was assigned in a paperwork move to allow him to be eligible to play for the Gulls if they reach the AHL playoffs. 12 Anaheim Ducks Ducks create forward opening for pickups by trading Patrick Maroon to Oilers Feb. 29, 2016 Updated 2:50 p.m. By ERIC STEPHENS / STAFF WRITER With deals made to acquire forwards Jamie McGinn and Brandon Pirri, the Ducks cleared a spot up front by trading left wing Patrick Maroon to the Edmonton Oilers for a 2016 fourth-round draft pick and defenseman prospect Martin Gernat. After getting a career-high 34 points last season and scoring seven goals in the 2015 playoffs, Maroon struggled in getting four goals and nine assists over 56 games while bouncing between the second and fourth lines. The deal also allows Ducks general manager Bob Murray to shed $2 million that s owed to Maroon in and , which could be used toward contract extensions for key restricted free agents such as Hampus Lindholm, Sami Vatanen, Rickard Rakell and Frederik Andersen. Gernat, 22, had three assists and an even rating for the Bakersfield Condors, the Oilers affiliate in the American Hockey League. The Ducks culminated their trade deadline day with a minor deal, sending veteran Tim Jackman and a 2017 seventh-round pick to Chicago for forward Corey Tropp. Jackman had been out of their plans since they put him on waivers in November and sent him to San Diego (AHL). Tropp, 26, has appeared in 148 NHL games with Buffalo and Columbus and had 11 goals and 17 assists in 51 games with Albany (AHL) this season. The right wing was on loan to Albany from Chicago's AHL team in Rockford, Ill. Orange County Register: LOADED:
