9 Page9 WARMUP/COOLDOWN (optional) The purpose of the warmup is to elevate the core body temperature to prepare the body for the activity to follow. It should consist of activities that the athlete will be doing in the actual practice or game. Once the heart rate has been elevated the muscles can easily be stretched. It is very important to do a proper warmup to prevent injury. It is best for the athlete do an off ice warmup and stretches prior to getting on the ice. Teaching the athlete correct habits are important for the years to come because as they get older it will be required by most coaches. 1. Light run 2. Bring knees to chest while jogging 3. Bring heels to butt while jogging 4. Side step cross overs to R and L while jogging 5. Short sprints 6. Stationary Imitation boxing - alone A cooldown period is also equally as important. It should consist of minutes of slow continuos exercise followed by lots of stretches. This process is important because lactic acid is produced by the muscle from doing anerobic exercise. Hockey 1-4 is mostly aerobic exercise so there should be minimal lactic acid build up. However once the lactic acid is removed the rebuilding in the muscle can take place. The harder the athlete trains the more time will be required to cool off. NUTRITION Eating a light snack is highly recommended before practice such as a granola bar or piece of fruit. The snack is not enough to give the muscles fuel for performance but will prevent low blood sugar and prevent the feeling of being hungry. The pre activity snack should be mostly carbohydrate with small amount of protein and lots of water. Please also ensure that you have a snack (high carbs) and water for your child at the end of practice (within 15 minutes) to replenish lost fluids and maximize the storage of glycogen.
