Password: hockey TOTAL MAN-GAMES LOST DUE TO INJURY/SUSPENSION: 0 A NEW HOPE The Nashville Predators commence their 17th NHL season tonight against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Preds boast a record in their last five openers and an overall record of in their first 16. At home, the Preds have an record in their home opener, with points in six of their last seven games at Bridgestone Arena (5-1-1). LOOKING BACK ONE LAST TIME The Nashville Predators finished the NHL regular season with a record, which was good for 104 points and second place in the Central Division. Head Coach Peter Laviolette, who coached his first season for the Preds, led the team to a 16-point improvement in the standings over the prior season, and the club went from a minus-26 goal differential in to a plus-24 in QUICK HITS The 104-point total was tied for the third best in franchise history. The team s best season came in , when the club posted a record (110 points), followed by the campaign ( , 106 points). The team also had 104 points in with a record. Rookie Filip Forsberg led the team in goals (26) and in overall points with 63 (26g-37a) last season. He was the only rookie in the NHL to finish the regular season as the top scorer on his respective team. Nashville had several player in the Top Five of voting for NHL awards, including goaltender Pekka Rinne (second, Vezina), forward Filip Forsberg (fourth, Calder), defenseman Shea Weber (fourth, Norris), and defenseman Roman Josi (fifth, Norris). Head Coach Peter Laviolette was a finalist for the Jack Adams Award, which is presented annually to the coach who has contributed the most to his team s success. The team boasted the best home record in the Western Conference (28-9-4) last season, which was the third-best home record in franchise history. The team qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs and drew the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round, losing to the eventual Cup champs in six games. Three contests were one-goal affairs, with two games going into overtime, including a triple-ot thriller in Game Four. WHAT THE COOL KIDS ARE SAYIN ABOUT THE PREDS THIS SEASON Fresh off of a 104-point campaign, the Nashville Predators have received positive press and higher expectations for Below are just a few outlets on what to expect from the Preds: USA Today In an article listing the top defensive corps in the NHL, USA Today ranked Nashville as having the top group in the League, saying, the Predators' defense group has the best combination of skill, grit, depth and potential. Shea Weber, Roman Josi and Seth Jones are three players who have been, or will be, in the Norris debate. They added, They [Nashville] can defend, play a rugged style, but also move the puck well and provide offense. TSN In a list of the Top 50 players in the NHL, three Nashville Predators cracked the list, with Shea Weber (16), Pekka Rinne (29) and Roman Josi (40) all amongst the NHL leaders. The Preds join Chicago, Los Angeles, Montreal, Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay as the only teams to have three-or-more players on the Top 50 list. Other notable predictions: ESPN.com picked the Preds to finish second in the Central Division, while Sports Illustrated predicted another 100-point season and a third-place finish in the division. CAROLINA The Nashville Predators and Carolina Hurricanes faceoff for their first of two meetings of the season on Thursday at Bridgestone Arena. The Preds have posted wins in seven of their last 12 games against the Canes, and have points in nine of 14 dating back to Dec. 3, 2003 (7-4-(0)-2 record). Overall, the Preds are 12-7-(1)-1 in 21 all-time matchups against the Canes and 8-2-(0)-0 on home ice. The last time these two teams met on Jan. 6, 2015, the Preds were trailing 1-0 heading into the third period. Nashville tied it up, only to see Carolina take the lead again. However, Mike Fisher and Roman Josi led the charge for the comeback win, each netting a goal in the contest to give the Preds a 3-2 victory.
