1 San Antonio Stockton Heat GAME PREVIEW: The Silver and Black make a trip 80 miles North of San Jose for a Sunday evening game with the Stockton Heat. San Antonio has made the trip to Stockton once this year, where they fell 6-2 to the Calgary affiliate. Stockton is coming off a big win over the division leading Ontario Reign, while the Rampage were blanked by the San Jose Barracuda 5-0. Despite the loss, last night s game was the first time that the Rampage have had a familiar linecard since early December. RAMPAGE LEADERS: Mikko Rantanen leads the Rampage scorers, collecting a team-high 17 goals and 41 points, while Colin Smith sits in second with 13 goals and 21 assists. Defensiveman Maxim Noreau jumped to third in scoring after a four-game points streak and has bagged nine goals and 25 assists on the season. Noreau also leads the team in power play goals and is tied with Joey Hishon and Rantanen for the most multiple-point games (9). AGAINST THE HEAT: The Rampage have seen Stockton four times this season, posting a record. San Antonio has found success on their recent power plays, but have failed to convert more than one of their opportunities with the man advantage against the Heat (1-18). Rampage players Colin Smith, Mikko Rantanen, and Marc-Andre Cliché have found success against the Heat this season. Smtih has recorded three goals in four games against the Calgary affiliate, while Rantanen and Cliché have bagged two goals and one assists in three appearances. A LOOK AT THE PACIFIC DIVISION: The Rampage are sixth in the Pacific Division after falling to the San Jose Barracuda 5-0 yesterday afternoon. As the Pacific Division stands, they will forfeit their fourth playoff seed to the Charlotte Checkers ( ,.573%) of the Central Division due to the AHL s crossover rule. Ultimately, the Silver and Black are aiming for the third seed or better come playoff time, and trail the San Jose Barracuda by.056 win-percentage points. ROAD WARRIORS: February has 11 road contests in-store for the Rampage, who boast one of the best road records in the AHL at Their 32 points earned away from the AT&T Center is fourth in the league for the most points earned on the road. On this season s Rodeo Road Trip, the Rampage will play six different opponents in 23 days. The trip will span both coasts and cover more than 12,000 miles, which will rank first in franchise history for distance covered on the Rodeo Road Trip. The Silver and Black have also posted a overall record on their Rodeo Road Trips since San Antonio won t return home until Mar. 4, when the Manitoba Moose visit the Alamo City. REMARKABLE ROOKIE RANTANEN: After collecting five points in the back-to-back against the Texas Stars and four points in the Charlotte series, Mikko Rantanen now ranks first among the AHL's rookies in scoring with 41 points despite having played just 32 games. Rantanen also ranks third in assists tallied by a rookie, and is first in +/- rating at +25. DEFENSIVE IMPACT: Of the Rampage s 51 points this season, 38 of them have come when the Silver and Black have given up two or fewer goals. San Antonio has held their opponents to two or fewer goals 20 times this season, posting a record. In those 20 games the Rampage have outscored their opponents 68-27, averaging 3.40 goals per game. The loss is the most lopsided of the season for the Silver and Black, who were shut out for just the second time of the campaign. San Jose registered their first goal in the 11th minute of regulation when Ben Smith sent a blast from the point and scored 10 seconds into the Barracuda power play. Despite being outshot 20-8 in the first period, the Rampage took a one-goal deficit into the first intermission. The Barracuda came out of the first break hungry for more after their barrage of shots in the first 20 minutes of regulation. They got on the board again when Patrick McNalley slipped a wrister past Roman Will, who was screened on the shot. San Antonio looked to answer with a few good scoring chances midway through the stanza, but Aaron Dell stood strong between the pipes to record the first Barracuda shutout of the season. San Jose tallied one more goal at the 10:24 mark and took a commanding 3-0 lead at the second intermission. The Rampage came into the final period looking to whittle away at the deficit, but despite outshooting the Barracuda in the frame, were unable to find the back of the net. San Jose got two more goals from Smith and Bryan Lerg to take a 5-0 win. Roman Will finished with 38 saves on 43 shots, his highest save total since stopping 44 shots against the Texas Stars on Dec. 26. The Rampage failed to convert on their only opportunity with the man advantage, while San Jose collected one power play goal on three chances.
