The first came against Fort Wayne in the second weekend of the season as the Mavericks bounced back from a Friday loss to win on Saturday, Oct. 21. Last weekend the Mavericks tied the Gladiators one game apiece in Atlanta. FRESCHI GETS HIS FIRST Eric Freschi scored his first professional goal in Friday night s game, putting the Mavericks on the board in the second period. It was the first of two goals by the Mavericks in five minutes. PAULY GETS TWO Shawn Pauly entered last night s game looking for his first point of the season and left the game with a goal and an assist. Pauly claimed a helper on Freschi s marker and then beat Shane Starrett with a backhand to pull the Mavericks back within one goal. POWER OUTAGE The Mavericks rank sixth in the ECHL on the power play but are now 0-for-5 on the man advantage inside of Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. A big reason for the fruitless advantages has been Wichita goalie Shane Starrett who has racked up 81 saves in 84 shots faced against the Mavericks in two games. PK FINDING ITS FOOTING The Mavericks finished third in the league on the PK last season with an 84.4-percent kill rate. This year has been a slower start for Kansas CIty when down a man, as the Mavericks have allowed 10 goals in 33 changes for the opponents on the power play. The stats are somewhat skewed after last night s 4-for-5 performance from Wichita s power play.

Platzer had posted 14 points in nine games and held a plus- 9 rating. Against KC, Platzer finished with two assists and a plus-1 rating. STARRETT STELLAR AGAIN Thunder goalie Shane Starrett has been strong all season but particularly so against the Mavericks. The Oilers prospect has stopped 81 of 84 shots against Kansas City, both games in Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. POWER JOLTS The Thunder entered last night s game with the league s 14th-ranked power play unit, but after last night s 4-for-5 performance Wichita has jumped to No. 3 in the ECHL at 9-for-37 on the season. UPPER HAND FOR THE CUP The Mavericks have claimed the last two Independence Cups, winning the season series against the Thunder in and The Thunder have jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the early running this season. FIRST GOAL TRENDS The Thunder have scored the first goal in seven of their 10 games so far this season, posting a 6-1 record when getting the early edge. Kansas City, meanwhile, has scored first three times this year but is 1-2 with the early lead. * Probable lines are subject to change.

Mavs Minutes A Look Back The Mavericks dropped Friday s game against Wichita by a 6-2 final score. The Thunder raced out to a 3-0 lead before back-to-back goals from Eric Freschi (his first pro goal) and Shawn Pauly (his first of the season) put the Mavericks back within striking distance, but it was all Wichita after that as the Thunder pulled away for a 6-2 win. PK Woes The Mavericks penalty kill had a rough night on Friday, allowing four PPG in five opportunities for the Thunder. Kansas City is now last in the ECHL in penalty killing having allowed 10 PPG in 37 chances. Power Play Packs A Punch The Mavericks finished the season, head coach John-Scott Dickson s first behind the bench, as the ECHL s third-best penalty killing team with an 84.4-percent kill rate. This year it has been the power play that has carried the load on special teams, clicking at a 20.7-percent rate. The Mavericks are sixth-best in the ECHL with the man-advantage and boast a 19.4-percent road conversion rate. Solving Starrett A Key Through two games against Wichita, Thunder goalie Shane Starrett has stopped 81 of 84 shots faced for a.964 Save Percentage. The Oilers prospect now has a.932 Save Percentage on the year to go with a 2.13 GAA. Wichita s netminders have carried the load for the Thunder thus far as Wichita has started the year 9-1. Trouble At Home The Mavericks have started 0-2 at home only once prior to this season While a down home record is typically a sign of trouble, the Mavs made their deepest-ever run in the playoffs in the season. Kansas City will look to right the ship starting tonight against the Thunder. Mavs Packing Heat in Net The Mavericks entered preseason camp with only one goalie, Ty Rimmer, who was traded to Greenville for future considerations after the announced additions of Mason McDonald and Tyler Parsons to the team from the AHL s Stockton Heat. Both goalies bring polished resumes that include Best Goalie awards (McDonald - U-18 WJC, 2013; Parsons -CHL Most Outstanding Goaltender; ) and World Junior tournament championships (McDonald - U-18, 2013, Parsons - U-20, 2017). Both goalies were picked in the second round by the Calgary Flames in their respective drafts, McDonald going 34th overall in 2014 and Parsons 54th overall in Straight Outta Stockton The Mavericks are already seeing the benefits of the new affiliation with the Calgary Flames and Stockton Heat, currently carrying six players on the roster assigned from Stockton. In addition to goalies McDonald and Parsons, Kansas City received forwards Mike McMurtry and Darren Nowick during the team s preseason camp and acquired forward Hunter Smith and defenseman Kayle Doetzel on Wednesday. McMurtry is a young forward who began his career in the AHL with the Texas Stars at the end of the season and he spent the majority of the campaign in Austin with the Stars as well. Nowick is a familiar face in Kansas City, bringing parts of two seasons of experience with the Mavericks to the team this season. Doetzel is a defenseman who is entering his second professional season after claiming two assists last year with Stockton. Smith is a former second-round selection of the Flames in the 2014 NHL Draft, along with McDonald. The 6-foot-7, 231-pound forward won a Memorial Cup and an OHL title with the Oshawa Generals in the season. For KC, Less Is More Through eight games on the season, sample size is called into question with any trend. For the Mavs, though, the team is 0-4 on the year when outshooting its opponents compared to 3-1 when being outshot. KC is also 1-0 when tied in shots on goal. Rookies Looking To Make An Impact The Mavericks will open the season with four rookies - defenseman Nate Widman, forwards Eric Freschi and Carson Dubchak and goalie Tyler Parsons. Widman was one of the Mavs first offseason signings, a solid defenseman who has demonstrated poise and responsibility along the blue line. Freschi and Dubchak are gritty forwards willing to work in the dirty areas

13 and play around the net and Parsons is a high-end prospect in the Flames organization. Lagace Claims First NHL Win Former Maverick Maxime Lagace won his first NHL game on Saturday, Nov. 4, a 5-4 win over the Ottawa Senators. Lagace made his NHL debut last Monday, the fourth goalie in the short history of the Vegas Golden Knights. Lagace was called up to the NHL after an injury to Marc-Andre Fleury, and he found his way into the crease following injuries to Malcolm Subban and Oskar Dansk. Husso Makes Three Ville Husso became the third former Maverick to get the call-up to the NHL when he was recalled by the St. Louis Blues on Oct. 28, the date of the Mavericks first game against Wichita. Husso did not see game action and was returned to the AHL s San Antonio Rampage. Friday Night Ice Package Expanded To 10 Games The Mavericks partnership with KCTV and KSMO has continued to grow since its inception two seasons ago, with this year s televised package including 10 home games, eight of which on Fridays, to be shown on KSMO TV. The full TV schedule includes home dates against Wichita (Nov. 10), Kalamazoo (Dec. 1), Tulsa (Dec. 31), Toledo (Jan. 19), Rapid City (Jan. 26 and 27), Cincinnati (Feb. 2), Indy (Feb. 16), Allen (Feb. 23) and Fort Wayne (March 2). Similar to seasons past, Joel Goldberg will provide the play-by-play while Simon Watson adds color to the broadcast. New Divisions in A new season brings a new divisional alignment to the ECHL. The Mavericks, who spent last season in the Western Conference s Mountain Division, are now in the West s Central Division along with the Cincinnati Cyclones, Fort Wayne Komets, Indy Fuel, Kalamazoo Wings, Quad City Mallards and Toledo Walleye. The Mavs will play a total of 32 games against divisional opponents during the season. New Faces On The Roster Mavericks head coach John-Scott Dickson stayed busy this offseason assembling a roster loaded with talent. Some newcomers of note include Mark Cooper, who was second in scoring on Rapid City a year ago. Cooper scored the empty-netter to seal the win against Tulsa in the Mavs season opener. Jordan Kwas, coming off a 20-goal season, was aquired from Wheeling via trade for defenseman Zach Tolkinen. Troy Donnay comes to Kansas City from Greenville after wrapping up a three-year Entry Level Contract with the New York Rangers. On The Road Again Similar to recent years schedules, the Mavs are road-heavy through the beginning portion of the season. Seven of the team s first eight games this year will be on the road, including the season-opening win at Tulsa. The Mavericks have this weekend s pair of games at Fort Wayne, a Wednesday morning contest at Kalamazoo on Oct. 25, a midweek in Greenville on Nov. 1 and a pair of weekend dates with Atlanta on Nov. 3 and 4. The payoff comes on the back end of the schedule, when the team plays 16 of 21 games in January and February at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. New Name, Who Dis? The season represents a new beginning for the Mavericks, who officially changed their team name from Missouri Mavericks to Kansas City Mavericks on June 1. The name change came as part of an effort to better represent the entire fan base on both sides of State Line. With the new name also came a new NHL affiliation, as the team announced a partnership with the NHL s Calgary Flames and AHL s Stockton Heat at a June 8 press conference. A Look Ahead The Mavericks will face the Tulsa Oilers for the team s annual Kids Day Game on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.
