The City of Brampton has been approached by the Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association to solicit the city's financial support of its tournaments. The hosting of this event in Brampton will build pride in the community, will help to build awareness of the sport of lacrosse, will result in positive impacts at the social level for youth, will offer immediate access to elite athletes who are role models for young aspiring athletes, will support a healthy active legacy and culture and will include an economic spin-off. Recommendations: 1. That the report from D. Doan, Manager - Program Support, Community Services, dated April 6, 2011, to the Committee of Council Meeting of May 18, 2011 re: Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association's Ontario Field Lacrosse Provincial Tournament and Annual John McCauley Memorial Lacrosse Tournament (File C16) be received; 2. That staff be authorized to provide funding assistance to a maximum value of $5, from Community Events Account # for the Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association's Ontario Field Lacrosse Provincial Tournament being hosted from Friday, May 20 to Sunday, May 22 and the Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association's Annual John McCauley Memorial Lacrosse Tournament being hosted from Friday, June 10 to Sunday, June 12, 2011, through a combination of in-kind services and marketing assistance;
3. That the Mayor and City Clerk be authorized to enter into an agreement to provide the support described in recommendation #2 above, in consideration of sponsorship recognition for the City of Brampton from the Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association, with content satisfactory to the Commissioner of Community Services, and in a form satisfactory to the City Solicitor. Background: Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association is an affiliated youth sports group operating under the guidelines of the City of Brampton Community Group Affiliation Policy and is also a member of the Brampton Sport Alliance. This volunteer organization offers a box lacrosse program and a field lacrosse program to the youth of Brampton. The box lacrosse program includes teams in the Peanut/Paperweight, Tyke, Novice, Peewee, Bantam, Midget and Intermediate age divisions. The field lacrosse program includes both girls and boys teams in the Novice, Peewee, Bantam and Midget age divisions. The City of Brampton is proud to be the host city for the Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association's Ontario Field Lacrosse Provincial Tournament and the Annual John McCauley Memorial Lacrosse Tournament. Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association has been selected as the host centre for the Ontario Field Lacrosse Provincial Tournament for the third year in a row, attracting 128 teams from across the province. The Annual John McCauley Memorial Lacrosse Tournament, entering its 19th year, will attract over 60 teams to this three day tournament. These two events will attract over 8,000 people, and many will be visitors to Brampton. The hosting of this event in Brampton will build pride in the community, will help to build awareness of the sport of lacrosse, will result in positive impacts at the social level for youth, will offer immediate access to elite athletes who are role models for young aspiring athletes, will support a healthy active legacy and culture and will include an economic spin-off. Current Situation: The City of Brampton has been approached by the Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association to solicit the City's support of the Ontario Minor Field Lacrosse Provincial Tournament operating from Friday, May 20 to Sunday, May 22, 2011 inclusive and the Annual John McCauley Memorial Lacrosse Tournament operating from Friday, June 10 to Sunday, June 12, 2011 inclusive.
Tournament teams in tyke, novice, peewee, bantam, midget, intermediate age divisions will play at Creditview/Sandalwood Park for the Provincial Tournament and will take to the floors at six City of Brampton Recreation Centres for the Annual John McCauley Memorial Tournament to see who will be successful in taking home the honours of Champion. The Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association, a non-profit organization, uses these tournaments as a means to fundraise money that they put towards their annual operating budget. It will help to grow the sport of lacrosse in Brampton by building awareness and by promoting an active, healthy lifestyle. The Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association offers a quality experience at a reasonable cost. The monies raised through various fundraising efforts in turn help to keep the registration fees for each player at an affordable amount, therefore allowing greater access to our National Sport for Brampton residents. The hosting of this major sporting event in Brampton brings with it several positive benefits to both the City and its residents: Lacrosse promotes an active, healthy lifestyle Participation in sport fosters the development of youth by providing a positive social and moral environment. These events are a great opportunity for the community/residents to get involved in a large sporting event in their own neighbourhood. It creates opportunities such as volunteering and gaining event management skills. Local students have an opportunity to obtain meaningful volunteer hours to help meet their scholastic requirements Increased tourism These events will attract over 8,000 visitors from across Ontario, many of whom will stay an average of 3 days in local hotels, eat in local restaurants, shop in local stores and in many cases get their first impression of Brampton These events will attract local media Two letters (see attached Addendum "A" and "B") from the Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association received on March 25, 2011, request assistance as follows: Financial Assistance: Ontario Minor Field Lacrosse Provincial Tournament Event Tenting $2, Annual John McCauley Memorial Lacrosse Tournament Tournament Book and Scorekeepers/Timekeepers $3, Staff concur and support this request.
JhM- The City of Brampton will request that the City be recognized by the Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association as a major sponsor of both events, and that such recommendation be included in an agreement with the group, with content to the satisfaction of the Commissioner of Community Services, and in a form satisfactory to the City Solicitor. "Other" Assistance: Recreation staff will coordinate a number of in-kind services, including City of Brampton Tourism maps and swim and fitness schedules. All of these items will be provided to the Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association to distribute during these events. Staff will also investigate the various internal avenues of assisting with the marketing for both tournaments (i.e. road-side signage, corporate special event list, etc.). Financial Comments: The City-Wide Community Events Account # has a 2011 Current Budget of $291,000.00, which has previously been used to support sporting groups, community events and/or heritage, arts and culture on a first come approval basis. There is currently sufficient funding available to support this initiative. The recommended value of the financial assistance provided for these initiatives is $5, Conclusion: Staff concur and support the request from Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association requesting financial assistance in the amount of $5, for the Ontario Minor Field Lacrosse Provincial Tournament and the Annual John McCauley Memorial Lacrosse Tournament. / Jamie Lowew^ Donna-Lynn Rosa Commissioner of Community Services Director of Recreation Report Authored By: Beth Cooper, Recreation Supervisor Community Services,
J i-5" Addendum "B'»**0N *> m Ontario Minor Field Lacrosse Dear Beth Cooper, It isalbert Rehanek, President of the Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association and Iam reaching out to the City of Brampton in regards to financial support of the upcoming 2011 Ontario Minor Field Lacrosse Provincial Tournament. This tournament is a 4 day affair that is held May 20th to the 23rd in Brampton and that hasover 128 teams playing and staying within the City of Brampton. That is over 2,500 athletes and their parents and siblings from Windsor, London, Ottawa and places in between. The Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association has successfully hosted the tournament at the Creditview and Sandalwood facility for the last two years. We have attempted to increase the exposure of the City, The BMLA and the Game of Lacrosse each year we have hosted the event. Last year we introduced event tenting (wedding tents) to the facility, which was a huge hit as it gave the facility the look of a very prestige's event. This came at a cost that was not budgeted for but because I understood the importance of the need for the drama of the landscape that these kids and parents were going to be spending the next 4 days at, I sponsored the $2,800 cost. This year I am asking that along with the portable tables and tents that they supplied per field that the City of Brampton helps with the cost of the event tenting. Iwould also like to request that Rogers TV attends the event to film the Provincial Final Games and thus Iwould require portable stands to be set up on specific fields and barriers to contain the public, even being able to charge for the events to help with the cost of televising the event. We could move these games to Chinguacousy Turf Field as a way to show case the new field and Brampton. We are hoping that the City believes that our endeavors to bring visitors to Brampton are worth an investment in the items mentioned above. You may contact me at anytime at or at president@bramptonlacrosse.com Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you. 6 JK> Addendum "A' '*** AS*^ Dear Beth Cooper, It is Albert Rehanek, President of the Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association and Iam reaching out to the City of Brampton in regards to financial support of the upcoming 19th Annual John McCauley Lacrosse Tournament. The Tournament is one of the most respected and attended tournaments in Ontario. We bring over 60 teams, 1,500 athletes and their parents and siblings into the city of Brampton for three days In June to celebrate the great Tradition of Lacrosse in Brampton. The tournament starts on Friday June 11th and ends Sunday June 13th and it also, so it happens, there is an underground movement in regards to a national event called "Lacrosse Day in Canada" on June 11th thatwe are tying into. We expect that this year's event will rival some of the bigger lacrosse events thru the year in Ontario. We are hoping that the City of Brampton would be willing to help the BMLA and support our long standing tournament with funding. We are creating a tournament book, that we estimate will cost $1,500 (after receiving sponsorships), that we will be distributing to all participants. We also have a major cost in paying our scorekeepers and timekeepersfor all the games. This cost will be at the $1,800 mark. We are hoping that the City believes that our endeavors to bring visitors to Brampton are worth an investment in the items mentioned above. You may contact me at anytime at or at president@bramptonlacrosse.com Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.
