2 LAKESIDE FIELD N orthwestern s Lakeside Field hosted its first men s soccer game on Sept. 26, 2007 when the Wildcats defeated Loyola University Chicago 1-0. The team played its first night contest on Nov. 3, 2007 against the University of WisconsinGreen Bay. Lakeside Field, which has a FieldTurf playing surface, is home to Northwestern s men s soccer, women s soccer and women s lacrosse programs. The Wildcats have posted a (.746) record on their home field since the 2007 season and hosted NCAA tournament matches in 2008, 2009 and Located along the shores of scenic Lake Michigan and with a clear view of downtown Chicago in sight, the facility is one of the best of its kind in all of collegiate soccer and certainly one of the most picturesque. Lakeside Field features a new scoreboard, a game operations box, permanent stands for 2,000 fans and lights for night games. In 2012, all seven Big Ten men s soccer programs visited Lakeside Field for the Big Ten Tournament. When I tell people that we have one of the most beautiful soccer venues in the world, they usually look at me strange. But when you stand on the top row of the bleachers and you look out at Lake Michigan and see the sailboats and the Chicago skyline, they understand what I m talking about. Lakeside Field has already had a great impact on our program and Northwestern as a whole. Head Coach Tim Lenahan

3 2012 SEASON NOTABLES Northwestern won its second Big Ten regular season title in The Wildcats finished the regular season with 11 points (3-1-2) and shared the conference crown with co-champions Penn State. It was the second title in as many years for NU, who won the program s first Big Ten title in Freshman forward Joey Calistri was the unanimous selection as 2012 Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Senior midfielder Chris Ritter was tabbed the 2012 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. Both Calistri and Ritter, along with sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Miller and sophomore defender Nikko Boxall earned First Team All-Big Ten recognition. Senior defender Jarrett Baughman received Second Team accolades while Calistri and midfielder Cole Missimo made the All-Freshman Team. It was the first time in NU history the program had four First Team All-Big Ten honorees. Northwestern made its seventh NCAA Tournament appearance and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the fourth time in school history. NU defeated Western Illinois in its first-round game at Lakeside Field, upset No. 7 seed Marquette, 1-0, and played a tightly-contested match against No. 10 seed Louisville. Joey Calistri was also named First Team All-Freshman by College Soccer News and received third team accolades on the All-Great Lakes Region team. Tyler Miller, Nikko Boxall and Chris Ritter were all Second Team honorees for the All-Great Lakes Region team. During the regular season, Northwestern upset then-no. 7 Notre Dame at Lakeside Field on Oct. 9, which was one of a number of quality wins for the Cats. Notre Dame went on to receive the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and NU posted four wins and a tie against teams ranked in the top-30 RPI, including eventual NCAA Champion Indiana. Sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Miller further cemented his name in the NU record books, finishing the season with 10 shutouts and has 19 career shutouts to rank second in school history. Miller needs 10 more to tie the NU record of 29 shutouts set by Misha Rosenthal from His 0.82 goalsagainst average in 2012 ranks third in single-season history. which was the least amount of goals allowed in the conference, and posted a 0.45 goals-against average during the conference season. The Wildcats were when shutting out their opponent and when allowing one goal. Northwestern started and ended the regular season in similar fashion, playing four consecutive overtime matches. NU s first four games went to extra time and its final four matches of the regular season also went to overtime. Before this year, the Wildcats had never played four consecutive overtime matches. In total, Northwestern played nine overtime matches this year, breaking the school record of eight set in 2009 and NU was in overtime this year. Northwestern once again had an APR that ranked in the top 10 percent nationally. A school-record 14 of Northwestern s 19 varsity athletic programs received Public Recognition Awards as part of the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) program, ranking NU third nationally in honors per sport offered. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the , , and academic years. A total of 14 men s soccer players earned Academic All-Big Ten distinction, including Jarrett Baughman, Peter Beasley, Nikko Boxall, Nick Gendron, Peter Horner, Scott Lakin, Layth Masri, Tyler Miller, Chris Ritter, Jeff Rogers, Kyle Schickel, Tommy Tombridge, Michael Walbridge and Grant Wilson Overall Record: Big Ten Record: Big Ten Regular-Season Co-Champions Postseason: NCAA Third Round The Cats began the season on an eight-match unbeaten streak and won 10+ games for the seventh time in the last nine years. The Wildcats won the school s first regular season Big Ten title in dramatic fashion on Nov. 5 in Ann Arbor, Mich. Playing against Michigan without NU s leading goal scorer Oliver Kupe, junior Chris Ritter filled in for some lategame heroics, scoring the lone goal of the game at the 83:09 mark, giving the Wildcats their first conference crown. Northwestern came into its game against Michigan second in the conference standings but had some help as Ohio State lost to Indiana, helping NU take the title. Another first came during the regular season as Northwestern was unbeaten (4-0-2) in conference action. The unbeaten Big Ten record helped contribute to Northwestern s 11-match unbeaten streak (second longest in school history) that spanned from Oct. 1-Nov Big Ten Tournament Champions Back Row (L-R): Athletic Trainer Danielle Colegrove, Assistant Coach Rich Nassif, Assistant Coach Neil Jones, Volunteer Assistant Coach Ovidio Felcaro, Connor Holloway, Peter Beasley, Michael Walbridge, Scott Lakin, Christian Ludtke, Peter Horner, Tyler Miller, Nikk Boxall, Athletic Trainer John Lee, Layth Masri, Head Coach Tim Lenahan Middle (L-R): Director of Operations Mark Plotkin, Chris Ritter, Lucas Swertloff, Oliver Kupe, Jeff Rogers, Nick Gendron, John Rogers, Tommy Tombridge, Grant Wilson, Eric Weberman, Jagger Martinez Front Row (L-R): Team Bus Driver Dave, Jarrett Baughman, Jonathan Harris, Kyle Schickel, Peter O Neill, Lepe Seetane, Reed Losee After winning the 2011 Big Ten regular season title, Northwestern kept its momentum going in the Big Ten Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich. As the No. 1 seed, NU received a bye in the first round, setting up a tough second round match with No. 4 seed Indiana. The Hoosiers got on the board first, scoring in the first half but much like they did all season, the Wildcats came back late in the game. NU knotted the score at 1-1 at the 76:59 mark thanks to an Indiana own goal. Lepe Seetane took a shot from the left side that an IU player tried to clear but the ball bounced off IU goalie Luis Soffner and into the net. Two overtime periods later, the game went to PKs and the drama continued as an extra round of PKs was needed to determine who would advance. Nick Gendron scored the winning PK and goalkeeper Tyler Miller came up with some huge saves, helping the Cats advance to the finals against No. 7 seed Penn State. In the finals, NU trailed 1-0 going into the break but stepped up in the second half with two goals by the senior leaders. Peter O Neill tied the score at 1-1 after converting a penalty kick and Oliver Kupe scored the gamewinning goal at the 73:23 mark, giving NU the 2-1 win and Big Ten Tournament title on the same field the team won the regular season title, the U-M Soccer Field.

8 BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS 2012 Big Ten Regular Season Co-Champions Back Row (L-R): Head Coach Tim Lenahan, Connor Holloway, Grant Wilson, Tyler Miller, Brendan Gruenwald-Schmitz, Cole Missimo, Peter Horner, Connor Jacobson, Scott Lakin, Peter Beasley, Sagar Jambusaria, Assistant Coach Mike Babst Middle Row (L-R): Layth Masri, Nikko Boxall, Joey Calistri, Henry Herrill, Zak Allen Front Row (L-R): Jeff Rogers, Michael Walbridge, Jarrett Baughman, Nick Gendron, Kyle Schickel, Chris Ritter, Eric Weberman, Lepe Seetane, Mick Maley, Associate Head Coach Neil Jones, Director of Operations Norm Hillner The Wildcats finished the Big Ten regular season with 11 points (3-1-2) and shared the 2012 crown with co-champion Penn State (3-1-2, 11 points). With Michigan State s 1-0 loss at Michigan on Nov. 3, Northwestern officially secured a share of the 2012 Big Ten regular-season title. Needing a win at Michigan to claim the title outright, Michigan State finished the conference season with nine points (3-3-0). It s a great day for our program, Northwestern head coach Tim Lenahan said. We didn t get to jump around on the field and celebrate like we did last year but nonetheless, to be back-to-back champions is just amazing. The effort we gave in the regular-season finale against Indiana was absolutely epic and to earn that point there after being down, really showed the character of this team. I m very happy for the program and all of the guys, not just on the team, but all of the guys throughout the years. We weren t a flash in the pan, we re a program built with a lot of character and I hope everybody that s ever been a part of this program takes some time to celebrate this. This is the second-consecutive conference crown for head coach Tim Lenahan s Wildcats after they won the first title in program history during the 2011 campaign. Lenahan has guided the team to a record during regular-season Big Ten games the last two years.
