5 BI G TE N CH A M P I O N S H I P S PA G E 5 BIG TEN RANKINGS A number of Hoosiers rank among the top 10 in the Big Te n Conference in different categories. In fact, IU leads the Big Ten in every major team category. Here is a look at how the Hoosiers fare in the conference rankings: ALL GAMES RANKINGS (AS OF NOV. 6) INDIANA 1st in Goal (49) 1st in Points (144) 1st in Assists (46) 1st in Shots (338) 1st in Goals Allowed (13) 1st in Shutouts (11) MIKE AMBERSLEY T-7th in Assists (5) T-9th in Goals (5) CHRIS MUNROE 1st in GAA (0.70) 1st in Shutouts (8) 6th in Saves (50) LEE NGUYEN 1st in Assists (11) 2nd in Shots (61) T-2nd in Points (21) T-9th in Goals (5) JACOB PETERSON 1st in Goals (9) 4th in Points (20) 6th in Shots (44) BRIAN PLOTKIN 1st in Points (25) 1st in Game-Winning Goals (4) 2nd in Assists (9) T-2nd in Goals (8) 4th in Shots (55) JOSH TUDELA T-9th in Goals (5) T-10th in Assists (4) JORDAN CHIRICO T-4th in Assists (6) SENIOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS The senior trio of Brian Plotkin, Mike Ambersley and Jordan Chirico have been an integral part of the Hoosier success during their careers in Bloomington. The Hoosiers have gone over the last four seasons with a pair of national championships. The threesome is doing its best to make its final season in Bloomington a magical one. The examples being set by the elder statesmen are being followed as the Hoosiers are unbeaten in their last 10 matches (7-0-3). On Oct. 19 against Butler, all three seniors tallied a goal and an assist in the 6-0 victory. Ambersley found Plotkin with a header for the gamewinner against the Bulldogs. Not long after, Plotkin found Chirico for a header on the back post. Chirico notched an assist and Ambersley scored a goal in the four-goal, second-half barrage against Butler. Chirico notched a goal and an assist against both Wisconsin and Butler this season. He has a career best 10 points on the year with two goals and six assists. The six helpers rank him fourth in the Big Ten Conference. In total, Chirico has 76 career games played and 37 starts for the Hoosiers. He has 19 career points on six goals and seven assists. Last season, the Conesus, N.Y., native scored what proved to be the game-winner against Tulsa in the NCAA Quarterfinals. Ambersley has been a model of consistency whether it is in the midfield or up front as a forward. The Ballwin, Mo., native has already surpassed his point and goal totals from a season ago with 15 points and five goals this season. He ranks ninth in the Big Ten in points, seventh in goals and sixth in assists. The former Big Ten Freshman of the Year has started 77 of his 83 games played in the cream and crimson. The Ballwin, Mo., native has 51 career points on 16 goals and 19 assists. Plotkin has been the leader of the Hoosiers this season. He tops the squad in points (25) and game-winners (4). The Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy candidate leads the conference in points, while ranking second in assists (9) and in goals (8). Plotkin has 75 career points as a Hoosier. NGUYEN EARNS HONORS Freshman forward Lee Nguyen was named College Soccer News National Player of the Week, Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and IU Athlete of the Week following his performances against Notre Dame (Oct. 26) and Maryland (Oct. 29). The Richardson, Texas, native notched the game-winner against the Irish, while spearheading the first three-goal comeback in school history against Maryland. Against Notre Dame, Nguyen bent in a beautiful free kick from 25 yards out for the game-winner. After senior midfielder Brian Plotkin drew the foul to set up the play, Nguyen sent the shot from the left side into the upper right corner, leaving 6-6 Irish goalkeeper Chris Cahill with no chance to stop it. It was Nguyen s second game-winner of the season and fifth goal during his rookie campaign. In College Park, Md., Nguyen led the Hoosiers to one of the most improbable of comebacks, as IU scored three goals in the final 17 minutes to forge a 3-3 tie with the third-ranked Terrapins. He had two official assists, but had a hand in all three Hoosier tallies.

6 BI G TE N CH A M P I O N S H I P S PA G E 6 With precious seconds coming off, it looked as though the Indiana comeback attempt would fall painstakingly short. Nguyen sent a corner kick to the far side of the six-yard box where sophomore back Greg Stevning headed home the equalizer with just five seconds remaining. Nguyen became the first Hoosier since Ned Grabavoy on Oct. 13, 2003, to be named College Soccer News National Player of the Week. It is the second Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week award of the season for Nguyen. He also earned the honor on Sept. 19. MARYLAND COMEBACK The Hoosiers pulled one of greatest comebacks in school history against the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday, Oct. 29. Trailing 3-0 in the second half, Indiana reeled off three goals in the final 17 minutes of regulation culminating in a goal from sophomore back Greg Stevning with five seconds remaining to forge a 3-3 tie with the third-ranked Terps. It marked the first time in school history the Hoosiers had overcome a three-goal deficit. Indiana drew within two at 3-1 in the 74th minute when freshman Lee Nguyen found junior Jacob Peterson on the back post. Nguyen beat a defender on the right flank and dribbled into the penalty area. He sent a cross that ended up on the back post where Peterson hammered it home. Nguyen again wreaked havoc on the Terrapin defense, closing the gap to 3-2 less than two minutes later. In similar fashion to the opening Hoosier marker, Nguyen found space in the right side of the 18. He sent a centering cross that appeared to be intended for senior midfielder Mike Ambersley, who like Peterson on the first IU goal, was on the back post. Instead of finding Ambersley, the ball deflected off a Maryland defender and rolled just inside the left post. With precious seconds coming off, it looked as though the Indiana comeback attempt would fall painstakingly short. After a throw-in by freshman Brad Ring was cleared out for a corner kick, the Hoosiers scrambled to get the opportunity off. Junior midfielder John Michael Hayden placed the ball down, and Nguyen took the corner after sprinting from the far side of the field. His cross to the left corner of the six found the head of Stevning, who headed the ball on net. The shot was nearly cleared by the Maryland defense, but the ball caromed off the crossbar, down and in. In IU s 3-0 victory over Notre Dame on Oct. 26, Traylor notched his first career goal, while Zayner scored his against Ohio State on Oct. 23. Traylor has displayed his versatility over his first two seasons. He started 10 matches wide in the midfield as a redshirt freshman a season ago, and has started part of the 2005 season on the backline. In the 65th minute against the Irish, the Indianapolis, Ind., native headed home a cross from senior Mike Ambersley to put the Hoosiers on top, 3-0. Traylor has a history of magical touches as a Hoosier. His first career point came in the 3-2 double-overtime national semifinal victory over Maryland last season when he assisted with Danny O Rourke on John Michael Hayden s game-winning header. Zayner notched his first career goal off a header in the first half against Ohio State. The Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy candidate headed home a Brian Plotkin corner kick in the 23rd minute. While Zayner has four career assists, it was the first marker of his career. He is known more for his defensive prowess over his three-year career, helping a Hoosier defense shutout 32 opponents with a goals against average of OFFENSIVE FIRE POWER The Hoosiers have shown offensive firepower during the 2005 season. Indiana leads the Big Ten in nearly every offensive category, including goals, assists and points. In fact, the Hoosiers are averaging 2.72 goals per contest and eight points per game. Nationally, Indiana is third in goals per game as of Nov. 7. IU has five games with five or more goals this season. It marks the first time the Hoosiers have accomplished that feat since the 1997 team pulled the trick. The last time IU had six regular season games of five or more goals occurred during the 1987 campaign. Butler became the latest Hoosier victim as IU notched six goals in the victory. It was the first match with six since Sept. 22, 2002, when IU won at Michigan State, 6-1. The last time the Hoosiers scored six goals at home was a 6-0 victory over IUPUI on Nov. 4, Also in the match against Butler, the Hoosiers showed a knack for distributing the ball. IU totaled nine assists in the win, matching the fifthbest total in school history. The last time an IU team had more than nine assists in a match was on October 26, 1983 when it had 13 in a 14-0 victory over Louisville. The Hoosiers notched 5-0 victories over Boston University and Cal State-Northridge in back-to-back matches on Sept. 11 and 16, respectively. It marked the first time since 1999 that Indiana had back-to-back fivegoal performances. During the 1999 season, which was capped by the second of back-to-back national titles, IU defeated Butler, 5-0, on Oct. 7 and Evansville, 6-0, on Oct. 10. Indiana also owns five-goal performances against IUPUI (5-0) on Oct. 2 and Wisconsin (5-2) on Oct. 14. HOOSIERS ON TV The Hoosiers had four regular season affairs on television during the 2005 campaign. The Hoosiers were on Fox Soccer Channel on Sept. 30, Comcast Local in Michigan on Oct. 9, ESPNU on Oct. 26 and CN8: The Comcast Net on Oct. 29. The Hoosiers took part in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and Fox Soccer Channel (FSC) College Soccer Game of the Week television package. The Hoosiers Sept. 30 tilt with Big Ten rival Penn State on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium was part of the live FSC eight-game Friday night package. Over the past eight years, the Hoosiers are on television, playing games on FSC, CSTV, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, Fox Sports Net, Comcast Local and CN8: The Comcast Net. The Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy candidate notched his second Big Ten weekly accolade of the season, scoring goals in the Hoosier 5-2 win over Wisconsin and 1-1 tie with Northwestern. Against the Badgers, the Lisle, Ill., native scored a on 30-yard bomb to give the Hoosiers a 2-1 lead in the first half. The goal was reminiscent of his game-winner in IU s season-opening victory over then-no. 10 Wake Forest. Plotkin later notched an assist on the Hoosiers final goal of the evening. He sent a long ball to senior midfielder Jordan Chirico, who chested the ball down and scored to the far post. The assist was the 30th of Plotkin s IU career, moving him into 13th place on the school s career assists list. With the Hoosiers trailing 1-0 in the first half against Northwestern, Plotkin scored from the right side of the 18-yard box to even it in the 30th minute. The goal was Plotkin s sixth on the season. It also moved him into a tie for 24th on the Indiana s career points list. NORTH CENTRAL TRIO STARTS TOGETHER For the third time in school history, a trio of high school teammates started together. On Sept. 2, sophomores Charley Traylor, Greg Stevning and Chris Munroe started together for the first time in their IU careers. They were all members of the same recruiting class three years ago after playing for North Central High School in Indianapolis, Ind. They have started five matches together in Ironically enough, the last time three players from the same high school started together was That year, the Hoosiers went on to win their second of back-to-back national championships. The trio of Dave Boncek, Pat McGauley and Keith Meyer started 18 matches together and played in all 25 together during the season. All three scored a goal in the same game on Oct. 26, 1983 against Louisville, a 14-0 victory. The first time three teammates from the same high school started together was 1976, when Mark Simanton, Cary Feld and George Perry helped IU advance to the national title game before falling to San Francisco, 1-0. They started two matches out of the 20 during the 1976 campaign. In the 33-year history of IU Soccer, three players from the same high school have appeared on the roster at the same time on 14 occasions. The 14 years consists of a total of eight groups of players. In fact, eight of his 14 career points, including both his career goals, came during the NCAA Tournament each of the last two seasons. He played a vital role in the national title runs, but would have been better described as a quiet contributor with a knack for being around the ball. The dawn of a new year brings about a change in the numbers and the play. The Evansville, Ind., native has 14 points on five goals and four assists during the 2005 campaign. From his central midfield position, Tudela has remained a key component in starting the Hoosier offense, but has also added the scoring flair as well. Tudela notched his first goal of the season in just the Hoosiers second match, a 4-0 victory over then-no. 7 SMU. He notched the game-winner heading in a corner kick against then-no. 25 Cal State-Northridge at the Oregon State Diadora Classic. The goal started a Hoosier onslaught of five second-half goals. Tudela scored three goals in back-to-back against Louisville and Michigan. Against the Cardinals, he notched both Hoosier goals, including the game-winner in the 19th minute. He iced the Hoosiers 2-0 win over Michigan with a goal in the 80th minute.

9 BI G TE N CH A M P I O N S H I P S PA G E 9 FRESHMEN FIRSTS A quartet of Hoosier freshmen have registered their first collegiate points. True freshmen Lee Nguyen and Brad Ring, along with redshirt freshmen John Mellencamp, Billy Weaver and Kevin Noschang have found the scoring column for the first time in their Hoosier careers. Nguyen notched his first collegiate point, registering an assist on the eventual game-winner against Cal State-Northridge on Sept. 16. He also scored his first goal in the match. Ring followed suit by scoring his first goal on a bullet from 35 yards in the 68th minute against the Matadors. Noschang and Weaver notched their first collegiate points at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament. Noschang assisted on the equalizer in the early stages of the second half against Saint Louis on Sept. 9. Weaver scored his first career goal, putting in his own rebound in the second half against Boston University on Sept. 11. Noschang scored the first goal of his Hoosier career against IUPUI. In the match, he notched a pair of goals, including one off an assist from his fellow classmate and former high school teammate Mellencamp. It was the first career point for Mellencamp and sophomore back Kyle Brabender, who both set Noschang up. SWEEPING THE BIG TEN HARDWARE AGAIN For the second time in the 2005 season, Indiana swept the Big Ten Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards. Junior midfielder Josh Tudela was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while sophomore goalkeeper Chris Munroe earned the Defensive Player of the Week honor. The duo earned the accolades after helping the Hoosiers to a pair of road victories over Louisville, 2-0, and Michigan, 2-0. Tudela and Munroe were the fourth and fifth Hoosiers to earn the Big Ten Players of the Week this season. It also is the first Big Ten honor of their careers. Tudela scored three of the four Hoosier goals in the pair of wins. On Oct. 5 at Louisville, the Evansville, Ind., native scored both Hoosier goals. He headed in a corner kick in the 19th minute from freshman Lee Nguyen before bending a free kick around the wall to ice the match in the 82nd minute. Against Michigan with the Hoosiers leading, 1-0, he went far post from 18 yards off an assist from senior midfielder Jordan Chirico, clinching a 2-0 win. Munroe notched his fifth and sixth shutouts of the season against U of L and U-M. The Indianapolis, Ind., native made four saves, all in the second half, to preserve the clean sheet against the Cardinals. In conference action against the Wolverines, Munroe made a pair of saves in recording the shutout. With IU clinging to a 1-0 advantage, he made a diving save to his left pushing out a bending shot from Michigan senior forward Trai Blanks. NGUYEN EARNS HONORS Freshman Lee Nguyen had a breakout weekend in leading IU to the Oregon State Diadora Classic title. As a result, he was recognized as the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 19. It marked the second time this season a Hoosier had been named Offensive Player of the Week after senior midfielder Brian Plotkin earned the honor on Sept. 5. In the opening game of the Diadora Classic, Nguyen registered his first career point in the 53rd minute, assisting on the eventual game-winner to help the Hoosiers knock off then-no. 16 (Soccer America) Cal State-Northridge, 5-0. The Richardson, Texas, native sent a short corner to the near post where junior midfielder Josh Tudela was there to head it home. Nguyen followed that by scoring his first career goal in the 64th minute. He played give-and-go with Plotkin before bending a shot into the right corner. The U.S. Under-20 National Team player also drew a penalty kick in the 68th minute that Plotkin nailed home. After falling behind, 2-0, to host Oregon State, Nguyen propelled the Hoosiers to a second-half comeback. Four minutes after the Beavers took the two-goal advantage, the reigning Gatorade National Boys Soccer Player of the Year set up junior forward Jacob Peterson for a goal to cut the deficit to one. With seven minutes remaining, Nguyen beat two defenders before floating a shot over the OSU goalkeeper to even the match at two. Nguyen also earned College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week honors following his performance at the Diadora Classic. He became the third Hoosier in as many weeks to be named to the pair publication s National Teams of the Week. Plotkin (Sept. 5) and Peterson (Sept. 12) were selected the previous two weeks. IU SWEEPS BIG TEN PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Senior midfielder Brian Plotkin and sophomore back Greg Stevning were named Big Ten Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, after leading the consensus No. 1 Hoosiers to the 2005 adidas/iu Credit Union Classic title. Indiana knocked off No. 10 Wake Forest, 1-0, to open the classic before topping No. 7 SMU, 4-0. The Big Ten honor marks the second time in Plotkin s career he has been named Offensive Player of the Week. The two-time first team All-Big Ten selection earned the distinction on Nov. 10, 2003, after scoring a goal and registering an assist in Indiana s 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Penn State. The accolade is the first career honor for Stevning. Plotkin was voted the Offensive Most Valuable Player at the 23rd annual adidas/iu Credit Union Classic by the media. The Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy candidate scored the game-winner in both matches. Against Wake Forest, Plotkin unleashed a shot from 25 yards out toward the right post that hit the back of the net in the 82nd minute. He scored the eventual game-winner against SMU on a header in the 12th minute. The Lisle, Ill., native also had an assist against the Mustangs and was named to the All-Tournament team. Stevning also received the Defensive Most Valuable Player at the classic by the media. The Indianapolis, native organized a Hoosier defense from the center back position that held a pair of top-10 programs without a goal in two matches. MISSOURI ATHLETIC CLUB HERMANN TROPHY WATCH LIST Senior midfielder Brian Plotkin joined juniors Jacob Peterson and Jed Zayner on the 2005 Missouri Athletic Club (M.A.C.) Hermann Trophy Watch List released by the National Soccer Coaches Association. The trio are among the 25 players considered the best returning players in college soccer. Last season, Danny O'Rourke became the first Hoosier to win the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy. The M.A.C. Award and Hermann Trophy were merged into one award prior to the 2002 season. Before that, the honors were both given out as national player of the year awards. The merge of the two honors completed a process of combining the three top honors in collegiate soccer. In 1999, the M.A.C. and NSCAA came together to create a single award to recognize the top Division I player. On five occasions, a Hoosier won the Hermann Trophy and on three occasions, a Hoosier won the M.A.C. Player of the Year Award. The list of Hermann Trophy winners includes: Angelo DiBernardo (1978), Armando Betancourt (1981), Ken Snow (1988, 1990) and Brian Maisonneuve (1994). The list of M.A.C. Award winners includes Snow (1988, 1990) and Todd Yeagley (1994). O'Rourke became the first to win the merged honor. The Hoosiers had the most representatives on this year's 25-player preseason watch list. A quartet of other schools, UCLA, UNC-Greensboro, Connecticut and Duke, had a pair of players listed. Last season, Indiana was one of three schools with two players named to the watch list as O'Rourke and Drew Moor were named. Both Hoosiers went on to be first

The winner is determined through voting of NCAA Division I members of the NSCAA. YEARS FOLLOWING A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP Indiana has enjoyed great success the year following a NCAA National Championship, including a trio of back-to-back titles. Following the 1982 season, Indiana won the 1983 championship. After claiming the title in 1998, the Hoosiers repeated the following year in IU pulled the trick a third time winning the national title last season after claiming it in Following the previous six NCAA titles, IU has advanced to at least the NCAA College Cup and posted at the minimum 16 victories. The Hoosiers have also advanced to the College Cup after winning back-toback national titles in 1984 and Here is a look at how the Hoosiers fared following a national title: NCAA Champions NCAA Champions NCAA Champions NCAA Runner-up NCAA Champions College Cup Semifinals NCAA Champions NCAA Champions NCAA Champions College Cup Semifinals NCAA Champions NCAA Champions NCAA Champions 2005??? among the top three in average attendance in 2001 and Also in 2001, the Hoosiers ranked third in total attendance with 25,630 visiting Armstrong Stadium. In 2001, the Hoosiers averaged 2,330 over their 11 games. The following season, the Hoosiers averaged 2,195, which was second nationally. Since the NCAA began tracking attendance for men s soccer in 2001, Indiana is one of only two schools (Connecticut being the other) to average over 2,000 fans every season. In fact, the Hoosiers have average 2, 287 fans per game since the 2001 season. LOOKING FOR A NEW RECORD The 2005 Indiana men s soccer team will look to do something no other squad in school history has been able to do, three-peat. After winning back-to-back national titles in 2003 and 2004, under the direction of second-year head coach Mike Freitag, the Cream and Crimson will look to win its third straight national title. The 1984 and 2000 teams fell short of the feat in the College Cup. The only other program in NCAA history to win three straight national titles is Virginia, who claimed four straight in 1991, 1992, 1993 and NATIONAL EXPOSURE Junior Jacob Peterson and freshman Lee Nguyen spent their summers playing for the United States National Teams. Both Peterson and Nguyen were members of the U.S. Under-20 contingent at the FIFA World Youth Championships in Holland. The duo helped the national team advance to the Round of 16, while winning Group D. Peterson played in all four games of the championship, including a start against Egypt. He also notched the game-winner in that start. Nguyen saw action in two matches at the championships and also started against Egypt. In 2005, Peterson played in 12 matches for the U.S. U20s, including eight international competitions. For his career, Peterson has 11 international caps with the Under-20 National Team and has scored three career goals. Nguyen appeared in 11 matches for the U20s, scoring two goals and adding an assist. Nguyen also was the leading scorer on the U.S. Under-18 National team. In seven matches with the U18s, the Richardson, Texas, native was the side's leading scorer with five goals and two assists. Nguyen also helped the squad to its first ever Milk Cup title on Aug. 5. He scored the team s lone goal in a 1-1 tie against perennial power Brazil during the competition. PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS Juniors Jed Zayner and Jacob Peterson were both named second team Preseason All-American by College Soccer News. The Hoosiers were one of four teams to have two representatives among College Soccer News three Preseason All-America teams. The other schools included UNC-Greensboro, UCLA and Duke. Peterson was also selected to the Soccer America Preseason All- America Team. The team consisted of 11 players considered to be the top players in college soccer. LEADING NATION IN ATTENDANCE The Hoosiers are one of college soccer s most-watched teams annuall y. The numbers do nothing to hinder that fact either. In each of the previous two seasons, the Hoosiers have led the nation in attendance. During the 2003 campaign, IU led the nation in total attendance with a total of 28,778 attending Armstrong Stadium for 13 home affairs. Indiana averaged 2,214 for home matches, which ranked third nationally. Last season, the Hoosiers backed that up by averaging 2,385, leading the nation in that category. The Hoosiers have a history of drawing large crowds. Indiana ranked
