Chris Loucks Assistant Director for Media Relations Women s Soccer Contact A Look Back... The University of San Diego finished the week 3-0 moving them to overall heading into conference play. The Toreros recorded two shut outs against Rider University 11-0 and Long Island University 3-0, and defeated UC Riverside 3-1. Against Riverside, Nick Leonard, Tannen Wels, and Ciaran O Brien were the goal scorers. Credit Dustin Guerrero with two assists and Adam Mariani with one assist. Goals against Long Island University came from Ryan Guy, Dustin Guerrero, and Adam Mariani. Assists were dished out from Ciaran O Brien, Dustin Guerrero, Eric Pohl and Kevin Meissner. The 11-0 victory over Rider included goals from Michael Caso (2), Dustin Guerrero (2), Nick Leonard (2), Adam Mariani (2), Eric Pohl, Tim Grey, and Ryan Guy. Freshman JT Howlan posted a new individual singlegame record of four assists. Guy finished with two assists, while O Brien, reeder, Caso, Leonard, Meissner, and Mariani finished with one assist each. A Look Ahead... The Toreros turn their attention to this upcoming weekend as they begin West Coast Conference play starting with the University of Portland Pilots on Friday evening followed by the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon. Portland is having lost to the Northern Illinois Huskies 1-0 this past weekend. While Gonzaga is having defeated Oregon State University 4-1. A look at the Pilots... Portland was slated to finish fifth in the WCC preseason poll. So far, they have faired well in non-conference action picking up their first loss of the season this past Sunday. The Pilots were unable to recover from a Northern Illinois penalty kick in the 10th minute. The Pilots have picked up wins over Air Force and Marshall. The Pilots have scored a total of eight goals this season and have allowed on two goals. Portland top offensive

2 threat is No. 10 sophomore forward Alex Elliott who has a team high five goals this season. A look at the Bulldogs Gonzaga was picked to finish seventh in the WCC preseason coaches poll. The Bulldogs come to San Diego with a record after picking up a 4-1 win in Corvallis, Ore. over Oregon State University. The Bulldogs are currently on a two game winning streak looking to extend that this up coming Friday when they open conference play against Loyola Marymount University. Keep an eye on No. 9 junior forward George Josten who has a team high six goals for Gonzaga this season. Winners at Home... San Diego remains undefeated when playing at home. The magic of Torero Stadium continues as the Toreros finished 3-0 last week defeating UC Riverside, Long Island University, and Rider University. USD s goalkeeping core has allowed only one goal when playing at home and scored 23 goals against opponents. By the Numbers... San Diego currently has 24 goals recorded this season taking 110 shot attempts, giving them a 4.80 Goals Scored Average. Of their 110 shot attempts, 60 have been Shots on Goal giving them a.545 SOG percentage. They have held opponents to three goals scored on 31 attempts, and a.060 Goals Scored Average. The team has tallied 25 assists this season. Eric Pohl and JT Howlan are tied at four assists each so far this season. Leaders by the Numbers... Goals: Michael Caso (3), Ryan Guy (3), Adam Mariani (3), Nick Leonard (3), Dustin Guerrero (3), Tannen Wels (2), Ciaran O Brien (2), Eric Pohl (1), Tim Grey (1), Mike Barbeito (1). Assists: Pohl (4), Howlan (4), Caso (3), O Brien (3), Guerrero (3), Guy (2), Mariani (2), Meissner (2), Leonard (1), Reeder (1). Shots on Goal: Caso has fired off 22 shots nine of which were shots on goal. Guy blasted 19 shots, seven of which were on target. Caso holds a.409 SOG percentage while Guy has a.368 SOG percentage. 11th Ranked Recruits in the Nation... The 2006 USD men s soccer recruiting class was ranked 11th in the nation this past week according to a poll conducted by CollegeSoccerNews.com. The recruits include Ciaran O Brien (Tacoma, WA), Ryan Peterman (Rancho Cucamonga, CA), Mike Barbeito (Fontana, CA), Tim Grey (Port Orchard, WA), Fabrice Guatrat (Valencia, CA), Jeremy Howlan (Thornton, CO), and Chase Tangney (Tacoma, WA). CollegeSoccerNews.com describes this class as... strong, fast, and ready to do their part to give the Toreros the lift they need to secure enough big wins to get back to the NCAA Tourney... The top recruit coming to USD according to CollegeSoccerNews.com, Ciaran O Brien, was named the Gatorade Player of the Year from the State of Washington and an NSCAA Youth All-American, and a three-time All-State honoree at Decatur High School. Ryan Peterman from Rancho Cucamonga High School is a versatile defender or forward. Peterman was a 2005 NSCAA Youth All-American as well. He was also a member for the Alta Loma Arsenal club. WCC Preseason Poll The West Coast Conference pre-season coaches tagged San Diego to capture third place. San Francisco is slated to finish first in the conference followed by Santa Clara. Loyola Marymount is fourth followed by Portland and Saint Mary s tied for fifth, and Gonzaga in seventh place. San Diego was picked third after narrowly missing out on NCAA Tournament selection in The Toreros bring back one of the deepest goal scoring groups in the conference, as 76% of the team s goal scoring production returns from last year. The returning group is headlined by first team All-WCC selection Kevin Meissner and goalkeeper Lance Friesz, who has started 60 straight games in the Torero net.
