The Broncos received five first place votes and tallied 35 overall points, while the Dons garnered the remaining two first place votes and received 28 overall points. San Diego was picked to finish third with 20 points, while Loyola Marymount and Portland each received 19 points to tie for the No. 4 spot. Gonzaga finished just one point shy of the fourth spot with 18 points, and Saint Mary s rounded out the poll at No. 7 with eight points. Santa Clara, which captured its ninth WCC title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals last season, brings back eight starters and 19 letterwinners from the 2006 campaign. Sophomore Stephen McCarthy, the 2006 WCC Co-Freshman of the Year, returns for the Broncos and will be joined in the midfield by senior Peter Lowry, who earned second team All-WCC honors after tying for the team lead with six goals a year ago. WCC Coach of the Year Cameron Rast also returns junior goalkeeper Joseph Buttitta, the conference leader with nine shutouts in San Francisco, picked to finish second, earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season last year after going and in WCC contests. The Dons return seven starters including senior defender Rob Valentino, who was tabbed for WCC Player of the Year honors after anchoring a USF defense that surrendered a conference-low 18 goals last season. Senior forward Ardalan Attar, who ranked second on the squad with five goals in 2006, will help pace the San Francisco attack. San Diego was picked third after leading the WCC with 47 goals last season and tying a conference record with 22 goals against league opponents. USD s returning group is headlined by midfielder Dustin Guerrero, who tallied four goals and three assists last year, and All- WCC honorable mention defenders Tim Grey and Sam Reeder. Loyola Marymount and Portland tied for fourth place in the preseason poll, and both programs have their sites set on a return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since First team All-WCC midfielder Nick Blanco returns for his senior season after scoring a pair of goals and assisting on four additional scores last year, and junior Brad Stisser returns in the LMU attack after tying for the team lead with four goals in The Pilots will field one of the most experienced units in the conference as 23 letterwinners and nine starters return to Head Coach Bill Irwin s squad. Gonzaga checked in at No. 6 after finishing third in the WCC standings last year, the highest finish for a GU squad since The Zags will be led by senior forward George Josten, who led the conference in goals for the second straight season with 12 scoring strikes in Saint Mary s rounds out the poll at No. 7 despite the return of second team All-WCC selection Dylan Leslie, who tied for the team lead with four goals last season Men s Soccer Preseason Poll 1. The Broncos claimed the ninth WCC crown in program history to snag the league s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, while USF garnered an at-large selection and hosted a first round contest. It marked the sixth straight season, and the 18th time in conference history, that multiple league squads have received postseason bids. Santa Clara enjoyed an exceptional run in the postseason, advancing to the quarterfinals before falling on the road to Wake Forest, 3-1. The Broncos began the 2006 NCAA Tournament with a second round overtime victory over Washington at Buck Shaw Stadium, 3-2. Head Coach Cameron Rast s squad then traveled to Indiana, where they battled the Hoosiers to a scoreless draw before winning a penalty kick shootout, 5-4. San Francisco hosted a first round contest for the second time in three seasons, falling 1-0 to New Mexico on a late goal. USF s Rob Valentino was tabbed for WCC Player of the Year honors in 2006, becoming the second Don in three seasons to take home the league s top honor. Santa Clara s Stephen McCarthy and San Diego s Ciaran O Brien shared WCC Freshman of the Year recognition, while Portland goalkeeper Luis Robles became the first Pilot to be named WCC Defensive Player of the Year. Rast received WCC Coach of the Year honors for the second time during his career on the Mission Campus, after also garnering the Coach of the Year award in Six different WCC players received All-American honors during the 2006 campaign, with Gonzaga s George Josten and Santa Clara s Keith DeVey receiving Academic All-American accolades. McCarthy and O Brien, along with Santa Clara s Amaechi Igwe were each named Freshman All-American, while Valentino was tabbed for preseason All-American honors by College Soccer News. Santa Clara finished the season ranked No. 7 in the NSCAA/adidas poll Team Capsules Gonzaga Bulldogs The Gonzaga Bulldogs enjoyed a solid 2006 campaign, posting a overall mark and a record in conference play to finish third in the WCC. Much of Gonzaga s success came due to the goalscoring capabilities of forward George Josten. The senior netted 12 goals last season to pace the conference, matching his WCC-leading total from the previous season. Josten, who aims to become just the second player in league history to lead the conference in goals for three straight years, enters the season tied for sixth on the WCC career chart with 13 goals against league opponents. Joining Josten in the Gonzaga lineup will be redshirt senior John Reha, who enjoyed a standout junior campaign in the Bulldog midfield. Reha assisted on eight GU goals in 2006 to become the first Zag in a decade to lead the conference in assists, while adding a pair of goals of his own. Head Coach Einar Thorarinsson brings back plenty of firepower in midfield, as senior John Palladino (5 g, 2a), sophomore Tye Perdido (4g, 3a), and senior Grant Lundberg (4g, 2a) are all capable of joining the attack. Veteran goalkeeper Vito Higgins, who started all 19 games and made 68 saves as a junior last season, anchors the Gonzaga defense. Loyola Marymount Lions LMU will aim for a return to the NCAA Tournament in 2007, but Head Coach Paul Krumpe will have to replace some key players from a 2006 squad that posted a overall record and mark in WCC play. The Lions lost first team All-WCC standout Bobby Burling (4g, 5a) and three-year starting goalkeeper Robert Flores to graduation, and will also have to replace midfielders Junior Ybarra (1g, 1a) and Diego Barrera (3g, 1a). LMU will look to first team All-WCC midfielder Nick Blanco to lead the charge after the senior enjoyed an outstanding 2006 campaign with two goals and four assists. Joining Blanco in the attack is junior Brad Stisser, who tied for the team lead with four goals last season after transferring George Josten Gonzaga Nick Blanco LMU continued on page 6

An 11-member recruiting class that was ranked No. 40 in the nation according to College Soccer News will be called on immediately to contribute. Portland Pilots Portland returns the most experienced side in the conference, as eight starters and 21 letterwinners return from a Pilot squad that went and in WCC play last season. Head Coach Bill Irwin welcomes back the goal-scoring prowess of junior Alex Elliott, who will be expected to pace the Portland attack during the upcoming campaign. Elliott tallied a team-high nine scoring strikes en route to second team All-WCC honors as a sophomore last season. Returning to the Portland midfield is the experienced trio of senior Jeff Griffin (4a), junior Brayton Knapp (1g, 2a), and sophomore Collen Warner (3g, 1a), who was an All-WCC honorable mention selection as a freshman. Leading the Portland defensive effort will be seniors Michael Gavin and Eric Fredback, junior Bryan Irwin (1a), junior Drew Chrostek and 2006 WCC All-Freshman team selection Logan Emory (1g). After minding the Portland net for four seasons and collecting three All-WCC first team honors, Luis Robles moved on to the professional ranks and leaves the Pilots with limited experience between the pipes. Sophomore Daniel Rhine is the most experienced of four goalkeepers on the UP roster, having seen brief action against Marshall last season. The Pilots will also have to replace forward Chris Sanders, who moved on to the professional level after earning All-WCC first team honors a year ago. Saint Mary s Gaels Saint Mary s looks to rebound from a overall record and a finish in the WCC last season. Head Coach Adam Cooper will rely on 15 newcomers to fill the gaps left by five departing starters and 12 letterwinners lost to graduation. Six starters from the 2006 squad return including sophomore Dylan Leslie, who tied for the team lead with four goals last season and was named second team All-WCC. Leslie will be joined in the midfield by junior transfer Justin Kim, who led Bowling Green with five goals last season and added a pair of assists for the Falcons. Senior David Blanchard (3g) adds scoring punch to the midfield, and Guillermo Trujillo (1g) looks to step into a starting role after seeing action in 19 games with seven starts a year ago. The defense will be anchored by junior Corey Heldreth (2g) and Brian Siu, a transfer from Cal State Northridge that saw action in 18 games last year. Goalkeeper Brian Mason started 15 games in 2006, posting a pair of shutouts, and has started 43 games in the SMC net over his three-year career. Sophomore goalkeeper Keenan Flynn made four starts 2006, and provides an experienced alternative in net for the Gaels. San Diego Toreros The high-scoring San Diego Toreros were ranked as high as No. 10 in the nation at one point last season, but struggled in conference play before finishing out the campaign with a overall record and a mark in WCC action. The Toreros led the league with 47 overall goals, but Head Coach Seamus McFadden will have to replace his top three goals scorers from a year ago in Michael Caso (8g), Ryan Guy (8g), and Ciaran O Brien (6g). Returning to the lineup will be midfielder Dustin Guerrero, who netted four goals and contributed three assists as a junior. Guerrero will be joined in the Torero midfield by senior Tannen Wels, who tallied three goals and two assists last season. Forwards Chase Tangney and JT Howlan will look to step into increased roles up front, after both contributed off the bench last season. Tangney assisted on three goals in 15 Alex Elliott Portland Dylan Leslie Saint Mary s Dustin Guerrero San Diego sub appearances a year ago, while Howlan enjoyed a solid freshman campaign in 2006 with three goals and four assists in 19 appearances and three starts. All-WCC honorable mention defenders Tim Grey (1g) and Sam Reeder (1a) will anchor the backline along with senior Brett Hiroto.
