6 2007 Season Outlook Broncos Set Sights On Cary Heading into the 2006 season, the Santa Clara University men s soccer team had 14 newcomers and only six starters returning yet the team went on to win its ninth West Coast Conference title, earn a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament and reach the quarterfinals. With 19 players returning and only three starters gone last season may have only been the beginning for Cameron Rast s Broncos. Santa Clara enters the 2007 season with depth from back to front, along with the core of the team that enjoyed so much success last season. The team has been picked to win the 2007 WCC title in a preseason coaches poll and College Soccer News has given the Broncos a No. 5 national ranking in its preseason poll. We have a strong group returning and there are some expectations now, said Rast. However, we always tell our team that every season is different and that we have to work just as hard to accomplish our goals. We can t just rest on what we accomplished last year. The goals that Rast mentions include winning another WCC title, reaching the College Cup and ultimately winning the national championship. a significant role for SCU last season. The incoming class of freshmen provides added coverage at nearly every spot on the field. One of our biggest assets this year is our depth, said Rast. We have a good group of goalkeepers with our entire backline returning from last year. Also, we a lot of versatile players in midfield and at forward that give us plenty of options in those areas. Coaching Staff Over the past five years, Rast has continued to the success of the Bronco soccer program, leading his team to four NCAA Tournament appearances, two WCC titles and a College Cup appearance. He is now third all-time in wins at Santa Clara with a record and he has never finished lower than third in the conference. The entire staff returns to assist Rast in 2007, led by long-time assistant coach and former Bronco goalkeeper Eric Yamamoto. Yamamoto enters his 17th season as an assistant soccer coach at Santa Clara, having worked with both the men s and women s programs. Rusty Johnson is back as the goalkeeper coach after helping develop Joseph Buttitta into one of the top keepers in the conference. Rounding out the staff is former MLS star, Tim Martin, who has become a key part of the staff during both training sessions and games. As I say every year, our goal at the start of every season is to win the national championship, said Rast. We have a lot of work to do, but the team worked hard over the past year to prepare themselves for 2007 and I am looking forward to the season. Who s Gone The Broncos lost three key contributors from last season s squad that went Seniors Keith DeVey and Erik Ustruck departed after helping SCU reach the NCAAs during each of their four seasons together. DeVey finished his career with 20 goals to put himself into the Top 10 all-time at SCU, while Ustruck had eight goals and six assists in his standout career in midfield for the Broncos. Amaechi Igwe also will not be back after signing a pro contract following his strong freshman season. Igwe netted five goals and had three assists at forward for SCU, before being selected in the first round of the Major League Soccer SuperDraft by the New England Revolution. Ustruck also made it to MLS, as he was picked by the Houston Dynamo in the Supplemental Draft. We will miss all three of those players, said Rast. Erik and Keith contributed a lot to the program over four years and Amaechi was an impact player right away for us. That being said, we feel that we have a number of players that can step up and make this year s team even stronger. Depth Despite those losses, the Broncos return one of their deepest teams in recent memory. The team has experience and youth at every position on the field from the goalkeepers to the forwards. Eight starters return, plus six more players who played Junior Brian Martin is aiming for another successful season in Goalkeeping At the goalkeeper position, the Broncos are loaded with talent and options heading into the 2007 season. The incumbent between the pipes is junior Joseph Buttitta, who had an exceptional first season for Santa Clara in his first action with the team. Despite nursing an ankle injury throughout the year, Buttitta posted eight shutouts and a 0.89 goals against average. He earned WCC Player of the Week and Player of the Month honors, before being honored with All-WCC accolades. Joe had a very solid year for us in net, said Rast. That position was a bit of a question mark heading into last year, but he really stepped in and did a nice job. With Joe and the other goalkeepers coming in, we feel very comfortable with that position going into upcoming year. Joining Buttitta will be sophomore Ari Zlotoff, who saw action in three games in 2006, and freshmen Jeremy Del Re and Kevin Klasila. Zlotoff provided steady support off the bench last season, while Del Re and Klasila arrive at Santa Clara after outstanding prep careers. Del Re starred at Buttitta s alma mater, Bellarmine Prep, helping the Bells win the WCAL Championship last year. Klasila arrives on the Mission Campus from Loyola High School in Southern California. He has been a mainstay on the United States U-18 team this year and traveled with the team to the PanAm Games in Brazil as well as a trip to Japan. Defenders The backline from 2006 that helped post nine shutouts returns intact for the 2007 campaign. Three seniors, Matt Hatzke, Matt Marquess and Jamil Roberts all return, along with Chris Sauter, who fit in nicely at right back during his freshman season. Marquess and Roberts provide athletic and steady play in the center of the 4 University Media Guide

7 2007 Season Outlook the middle of the park. He will be fighting for a starting role this season. Two new faces could play big roles for the Broncos in the midfield. Redshirt freshman Ricky Character should make a big contribution, as well as incoming freshman Jalil Anibaba, who spent this past year performing for the U-18 and U-20 national teams. Character had an outstanding prep career in Memphis and Anibaba was the California Gatorade Player of the Year in 2007 at Davis Senior High School. Other members of the midfield are Scott Sweeney and Jerred O Connell. Sweeney overcame a variety of injuries to work his way back onto the team last season, while O Connell has also battled injuries in his career. Forward Line M.A.C. Hermann Trophy candidate Peter Lowry hopes to celebrate a lot of goals for the Broncos as they attempt to make it back to the College Cup. defense, allowing Hatzke and Sauter to get up and down the wings and jump into the attack. Hatzke and Roberts were All-WCC selections with Roberts also picking up All-Far West Region accolades last year. Roberts and Marquess proved to be very durable as well in central defense, starting every game of the year and finishing as the team s leaders in minutes played. Marquess has played in 45 straight games for SCU since arriving as a transfer from UC Santa Cruz as a sophomore. Sauter started the year on the bench, but once he established himself on the right side, he did not come out of the lineup. He also scored a huge goal late in the year, heading home a cross to beat San Diego in overtime on the road. We have an excellent group returning in defense and I am confident that they are ready for another good year, said Rast. We have experience, athleticism and players who can move the ball so I believe that defense should be one of our strengths. Along with the four returning starters, Rast can also count on senior Brian Curry, who has started 22 games in his career, sophomore Ross Smith and junior Anton Hooker. Smith played both forward and defense a year ago for SCU. Midfield Despite losing Ustruck and DeVey from the midfield, the Broncos could have one of their strongest midfield groups ever in Captain Peter Lowry is expected to have a big senior season after tying for the team lead in scoring a year ago. The two-time All-WCC selection was one of 29 players across the country named to the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy watch list and he spent part of the offseason playing with the U.S. U-23 team. With six more goals, he will become one of 10 players in program history to reach the 20-goal plateau. Peter continued to prove last year that he is one of the top players in the country, said Rast. He scored some important goals for us throughout the year and really created a lot of offense. He will be our leader in the midfield. Joining Lowry will be a talented group of youngsters, including 2006 WCC Co-Freshman of the Year, Stephen McCarthy. McCarthy enters his sophomore year with big expectations after serving as the team s defensive midfielder as a freshman. His ability to keep possession and start the attack, in conjunction with his disruptive abilities on defense, proved key to SCU s success last season. Sophomore Jeff Cosgriff came off the bench in 22 out of 23 games last season and had a major impact, scoring four goals, including an overtime game-winner at Saint Mary s, while providing a big threat on set pieces. He worked well with McCarthy and Lowry in Despite losing Amaechi Igwe and sometime forward Keith DeVey and their combined 11 goals, the Broncos appear to be loaded with offensive firepower. Back from last season s squad are regular contributors Jide Ogunbiyi (2 g, 5 a in 2006), Sean Danzeiser (4 g, 1 a in 2006), and Brian Martin (3 g, 5 a in 2006). Ogunbiyi recovered from offseason foot surgery to have a strong finish to the year, including scoring the game-winner against Washington in the NCAA Tournament second round. Martin also had a great finish to the year and appears to have found a home on the left side of the forward line. He set up a number of goals with his powerful runs down the wing that ripped holes in the opponent s backlines. Danzeiser s explosive speed and quickness proved tough for opponents to handle last year and with a year of experience under his belt, he should be even more effective. His game-winner against San Francisco in the WCC opener last year was just one example of his goalscoring prowess. We have a lot of options at forward, noted Rast. We have speed, size, athleticism, along with some great goalscorers. I am excited to see how this group comes together over the course of the year. Two Boise natives also hope to produce for SCU this season. Redshirt freshman Kellen Wantulok sat out last year with a broken ankle, but has his sights set on a breakout year, while freshman Jeremy Strong brings an impressive resume with him to the Mission Campus. Aaron Clubb, who scored an important goal against St. Louis last year, also should be in the mix up top for SCU. The Schedule The Broncos should be tested early and often in 2007 with another tough nonconference schedule and the always difficult double round robin WCC format. The team will play four 2006 NCAA Tournament teams, Brown, UCLA, California and San Francisco. The Bruins, who invade Buck Shaw for a Saturday night tilt on Sept. 22, reached the title game last year, before falling to UC Santa Barbara. The Broncos will also play local rivals, Stanford and San Jose State, in addition to traveling to Rhode Island to play in the Brown adidas Classic against the host Bears and Boston University. We are excited about the teams on our schedule, said Rast. We have a good mix of non-conference opponents with a big trip to the East Coast and that should prepare us for another year in the WCC. Last season, we got better as the year went on because we played top competition early on and we are hoping to repeat that formula. The 2007 Broncos open the year on August 31 against Alabama A&M and hope to end the season playing for the national title in Cary, N.C. on Dec. 14 and 16 in the College Cup. With a roster full of returnees that experienced the rigors of the WCC schedule and were hardened by difficult road games in the NCAA Tournament, SCU is poised to do just that. Possessing a career record at Santa Clara, Rast is now third on the all-time school wins list, surpassing Steve Sampson ( ) in After a successful 2006 regular season, the Broncos earned the No. 10 seed in the NCAA tournament and a bye in the first round. SCU then defeated Washington 3-2 in overtime in the second round before eliminating Indiana on the road on penalty kicks. The Broncos run to the College Cup was halted by Wake Forest in the quarterfinals as the Demon Deacons defeated Santa Clara 3-1. Prior to becoming head coach, Rast spent eight seasons as an assistant in the program, including serving as the Associate Head Coach in Rast has contributed greatly to the incredible amount of success that Santa Clara has achieved throughout the years, putting his unique stamp on the Santa Clara program. In 2005 under Rast, the Broncos had another strong season, placing second in the West Coast Conference and earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the 16th time in program history. The team ultimately lost on penalty kicks in the second round of the tournament, but eight players earned All-WCC honors, including Mehdi Ballouchy, the WCC Player of the Year, who was the program s first First Team All-American since 1999 (Eric Denton). Overall, during his five-year tenure as head coach, Rast has seen his players earn 36 All-West Coast Conference picks, one WCC Player of the Year award and four All-American selections. In 2006, Stephen McCarthy was named the WCC Co- Freshman of the Year, while Peter Lowry, Keith DeVey and Jamil Roberts all earned All-Far West honors. In 2003, he was named the WCC Coach of the Year for the first time, as he led the Broncos to the WCC Championship and an appearance in the NCAA College Cup. Prior to becoming head coach in 2002, Rast helped produce 67 All-West Coast Conference selections, seven All-Americans, five WCC Defenders of the Year, one WCC Player of the Year and numerous athletes that went on to a career in professional soccer as an assistant coach. The Broncos amassed a record of with five WCC titles and seven NCAA Tournament appearances. A former player and two-time All-American sweeper at Santa Clara, Rast earned a piece of Santa Clara s 1989 national championship and played a key role in leading the Broncos to the 1991 NCAA championship game. During his four-year career, the Broncos compiled a record. As a sophomore in 1989, he earned his first All-America selection, scoring a career-high 30 points on 11 goals, as Santa Clara finished with a record, the nation s top ranking and a share of the NCAA title. A knee injury forced Rast to sit out much of his junior season in 1990, but he returned to form his senior year in He and the Broncos returned to the national championship game, this time claiming the second-place trophy. Rast earned his second All-America honor, as did his twin brother and fellow Bronco defender, Matt. In 1991, Rast was a finalist for both the Hermann Trophy and the Missouri Athletic Club Award, both given to the nation s top collegiate men s player. Following his graduation from Santa Clara, Rast made an impact on the international scene, as well. He helped the United States team to a gold medal at the 1991 Pan-American Games in Havana, Cuba, and served as the captain of the 1992 U.S. Olympic Team in Barcelona, Spain. He also played in the 1993 World University Games in Buffalo, N.Y., and was a member of the U.S. Under-20 team that reached the semifinals of the 1989 Youth World Cup in Saudi Arabia. In the spring of 1997, Rast was named an assistant coach with the U.S. Under-17 National team, helping guide the squad to a fourth-place finish in the 1999 U-17 World Cup in New Zealand. He currently serves the sport with his participation as an executive member of U.S. Soccer s Board of Directors. Additionally he sits on the Athlete Advisory Council representing soccer to the U.S. Olympic Committee. Rast and his wife, Mindy, live in San Jose with their sons Jake and Timothy. 9 ERIC YAMAMOTO ASSISTANT COACH SANTA CLARA 90 (17th SEASON) Eric Yamamoto begins his 17th season as assistant coach for Santa Clara in He has been a mainstay at Santa Clara, dating back to 1986 when he wore the Bronco uniform, and now as the top assistant for the men s team. He spent most of the 1990 s as the goalkeeper coach for both the men s and women s squads. Yamamoto brings organization, dedication and commitment to the Bronco family. He earned All-America status as a goalkeeper, setting Bronco records with a 0.63 goals-against average and 38 shutouts as Santa Clara charged to the nation s top ranking and the NCAA co-championship during his senior season in Yamamoto, a four-year starter and three-time Academic All-American, anchored a stingy defense that allowed just 10 goals while posting a record en route to the nation s No. 1 ranking. Since the formation of the West Coast Conference for women s soccer, Santa Clara featured the league s toughest defense in six of the first eight seasons, all with Yamamoto coaching the Bronco keepers. In 2001, he helped the women s squad capture their first-ever National Championship, as the Broncos shutout perennial powerhouse, North Carolina, 1-0. As a member of the U.S. National Team coaching staff, Yamamoto has worked with many of the top U.S. goalkeepers, most recently with the U.S. Women s National Team. He also coaches numerous U.S. National Youth Teams on both the boys and girls sides. Most recently, he has served as the assistant coach for the U.S. U-18 men s team.
