1 IRDL International Roller Derby League cards for ROLLER RUMBLE Roller Derby Game Here s a really great set of roller derby cards created for ROLLER RUMBLE by roller derby historian Chris Schmidt. Chris spent many years preparing roller derby telecasts for international distribution, and as such has a huge stockpile of rare, vintage roller derby footage. I still have 50 DVDs from my 250 strong Roller Derby DVD collection to watch again but none of those cover the earliest years, Chris wrote recently. Thus, I was able to finish my first new ROLLER RUMBLE card set: the NRDL season. Backed by Chris extensive video archive and his meticulous notes, you can be assured that these cards will play just like the real thing. If you ve ever wanted to be able to hop into a time machine and punch a ticket for an evening at the roller derby of the mid-20th century, these cards will give you an authentic approximation of what you d see! Before you dive in, though, here are a couple of Chris design notes. The first concerns his ratings vs. the official game ratings from the Roller Derby Pioneers cards. The PLAAY Games cards represent a skater s overall career ability, rather than a specific season of action as Chris cards do. Chris notes, Where the same skater appears in the Pioneers set I have retained the ratings from the Pioneers set. The other skaters, though, are rated based on their performances in the games from the season. While Chris cards include team logos, they re not the actual official team logos from I tried to find logos which are as close as possible to the originals, and I think I succeeded with the Red Devils, Westerners and Chiefs. The team colors presented on the cards are substantially similar to each team s actual colors. The colors may seem odd compared to subsequent years, Chris says, but they are correct for the season. Chris recalls that the Jolters switched to blue uniforms in later years but in they wore orange and black. Similarly, the Westerners, who are mainly known for their classic red and blue uniform color scheme, actually wore purple and white in Each team was assigned a home city or region, although in reality the league was more of a traveling road show. For the record, here are the home cities for each of the teams: Chiefs(New York); Jets(Washington, DC); Jolters(New Jersey); Panthers(Philadelphia); Red Devils (Brooklyn), Westerners(Chicago). For the most faithful re-creation of the season, you should use the ROLLER RUMBLE Rules Revisions included with the Skate Pioneers cards. For example, any skater could jam, not just the jammers. Thus, you should consider whichever skater scores the match-track point that sends a team into a jam, THAT skater should be considered the jammer. Also, the scoring rules were somewhat different in this era: 1 point was scored for passing one or two opponents; two points was scored for passing three or four opponents; five points was scored for passing all five opponents. If you own the Pioneers card set, it would be a good idea to review all of the modifications. Of course, you can play these cards with later-era rules, and it ll work just fine! Mostly, it s our hope these cards enable you to experience a little bit of the charm and nostalgia of this fun, quirky and (sadly) now mostly-forgotten relic of American sports history, the banked-track roller derby.
