Joe Baker CD Review Andy Nelson s Full Nelson Shoeing A half nelson is something I wouldn't want to get in to, let alone a "Full Nelson" and when it comes to horseshoeing and I've had my share of that rewarding job in the American West! Actually, where I'm going with this is with our fellow board member with the Western Music Association and my good friend Andy Nelson and his new CD "Full Nelson Shoeing"! Wow, What talent Andy has brought to the table. I only wonder "What would Martha do? Two horseshoer's and getting two hooves at once, what a feat to undertake but Andy has come through and pulled it off. My favorite, License Plate Mottos is a sure winner, especially for my radio show audience. Cowboy poetry has come to a whole new meaning with humor, sincerity and the way it is as only Nelson can deliver. My hats off to Andy for this long awaited album with much antisipation we all have come to expect and I can assure you, no one will be disappointed. You call it... Half or FULL NELSON SHOEING. 4 POETS AND SONGWRITERS by Margo Metegrano, CowboyPoetry.com A great collaboration between a poet and a songwriter transcends "art" and "craft," and even goes beyond a good combination of story and talent. In the case of "El Fuego," a poem by Virginia Bennett turned into a song by Curly Musgrave, the exceptional result was blessed by the writers' special bonds of friendship and respect for each other's work, and another ingredient: some sort of inexplicable magic. Poet Virginia Bennett and songwriter Curly Musgrave reveal some of the magic and their friendship as they comment on their collaboration that resulted in the heralded song, which is included on the recent Red Rock Moon CD by Curly Musgrave and Belinda Gail. Virginia Bennett tells how she wrote the poem some years ago while working on a ranch in Twisp, Washington. She explains, "I listened to a recording of passionate music from a Mexican guitar. The music seemed to pulse through my pen as I wrote. Easily recognizable in the back of my mind somewhere was my childhood dream horse, "Fury"...It didn't take much to imagine a mare who would be his equal. Not a mare who would bend to his will, but one who also demanded that her own desires 'would not be denied.'" She comments, "I always wanted a true musician to try and find a song within these lyrics. I played and sang this song for years as something slow, sexy, with simple music, 3/4 time and two chords. Possibly seven years after I wrote 'El Fuego,' I thought of my friend Curly Musgrave and his ability to create intellectual music, his grace with the Spanish language, and his partnership with Belinda Gail. For if anyone is perfect to play and sing the part of the palomino mare, 'La Luz de Oro,' it is Belinda." Here's Virginia Bennett's original poem: EL FUEGO Each night he comes to the ridgetop Overlooking the rancho below. Sparks fly from his hooves, dark and flashing, And lightning reflects in the blaze of his coat. The hot wind carries his summons To the mare of the wife of the rancho's patron. With wild eyes, she paces the fenceline As her answers ring off that rocky caňon. He's on fire, and the Mexican sunset Gleams in the sweat of his chestnut hide. Ann they call him El Fuego de Sonora. For they know his desires will not be denied. His sire escaped Pancho Villa And his dam once served in Zapata's band. He was born on el Cinco de Mayo Never once has he known man's cruel, iron brand. And the mare of the wealthy Seňora Has won all the races down Fiesta's lanes Warhorses of the conquistadores, Their blood courses through her hot, royal veins. She's on fire, and the Mexican sunrise Gleams in the sweat of her golden hide And they call her La Luz de Oro For they know her desires will not be denied. On the eve of the summer solstice El Fuego calls to that palomino mare. And she flies to obey his every command No corral on earth could hold her down there. Now, on cool nights, out on the desert, He races the wind with the mare at his side. With blood-soaked flanks, their teeth slashing, They're out there tonight for the angels to ride. They're on fire, and the Mexican sunset Gleams in the sweat of his chestnut hide. And they call him El Fuego de Sonora For they know his desires will not be denied. Virginia Bennett, All rights reserved These words may not be reprinted without the author's written permission. Poets and Songwriters Cont With his usual combination of eloquence and humility, Curly Musgrave shares his experience in working with Virginia Bennett's words. He comments that the resulting song is a "wonderful model of a poet/ musician/performer collaboration...though an intriguing notion for me to entertain is that neither of us, individually, could have produced the sum total of what the song is." As to taking it from a poem to a song, he tells, "With a minor tweak or two, the poem was set up as the personification of El Fuego and La Luz De Oro and it just fell into place. Both Belinda and I busted our butts with our respective guitar parts in live performance, but putting that 'sweat' into it brings the musical passion the horses inspire." In an essay, "Fine Lines," at CowboyPoetry.com, respected poet Rod Miller comments that the poem "...demonstrates its writer s expertise with sensuousness...virginia Bennett forces you to fan yourself to ward off the heat, squint in the glare of the searing light, even wrinkle your nose at the stench of sizzling sulphur..." In their electric performances on stage, Curly Musgrave and Belinda Gail ignite that passion of the poet's words. The results of the collaboration go beyond words, music, and instruments. Audiences experience a magical something that approaches "other-worldly," under the spell of their stunningly powerful and skillful instrumental accompaniments and forcefully delivered lyrics that set the steamy song on fire. Curly comments, "If it were just my own composition and performance, I certainly wouldn't put the words, 'Western masterpiece' to it, but as the collaboration it has become--in my view as a life-long songwriter--it lays down about as well as a song can, from its inspired poem through the music and the performance. I'm so delighted and proud to be connected to it and honored that Virginia would entrust me with her wonderful poem. She certainly deserves to be recognized for her work with it as well as for the body of work she has contributed to the genre. I think history will see it, and her, as very significant." A recent American Cowboy magazine review by Mark Bedor singles out the song as a "standout." "El Fuego" is on Curly Musgrave and Belinda Gail's Red Rock Moon CD ($17 postpaid from Curly J. Productions, PO Box 512, Lake Arrowhead, CA 92352). "El Fuego" is in Virginia Bennett's most recent poetry collection, In the Company of Horses ($18.95 postpaid from Virginia Bennett, PO Box 268, Goldendale, WA 98620). There was cowboy, country and bluegrass music for everyone along with gunfights performed by Los Pistoleros. Los Pistoleros is a theatrical stunt team began by Cowboy Bill. The group really woke up the neighborhood with a huge gunfight. Cowboy Bill Can be contacted at: The Arizona Cowboy Symposium is the Real Deal The Arizona Cowboy Symposium Association Inc., a non profit 501(c)(3) corporation whose purpose is to preserve and perpetuate the traditional Music, Prose, and Poetry of the American Cowboy, was born January 30, This is a result of five years of hard work and determination by a group who call themselves the Arizona Ranch Hands. Our goal is to grow The Arizona Cowboy Symposium into the Crown Jewel of cowboy gatherings. When the original Arizona Ranch Hands was conceived as a chapter of the Western Music Association, our main purpose was to assist the parent organization in producing the Welcome to The Romance concert series, and serve as the staff of volunteers for the annual Western Music Festival which was held in Tucson each year in November. In 2002 the WMA chose to move it s annual Festival away from Tucson. That year the Ranch Hands reorganized under new leadership and, pulled off the first Tucson Cowboy Music Roundup. When it was over and the dust settled we were able to pay all the bills and give each performer a little token of our appreciation. I know it wasn t enough to buy a tank of gas to get home; however, the Tucson Cowboy Music Roundup had finally paid everyone a little money for sharing their talents with our community. The next years were about the same, many talented folks returned to support, and be a part of The Roundups in 2003, 2004, We continued to be able to meet our cost of production and that was about all. It became apparent that if we were to survive, it was time to look at other options. The conclusion was that Cowboy Music and Poetry should be performed in Cowboy Country where it would be appreciated and understood. With that in mind we changed the name to The Arizona Cowboy Symposium, and began proceedings to form the new corporation, and moved the event to Sonoita, AZ. The Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds was chosen as our venue for the first ever Arizona Cowboy Symposium. The fair commission wanted a major event annually in the month of November, and we wanted a permanent home for our Symposium. What a deal, after five years of struggle we were warmly welcomed into the heart of cowboy country. The Sonoita-Elgin Chamber came on board in full force to assist in accommodating performers with housing. They proceeded to seek host families and we had more offers of housing than we had performers. At the present time, all of last year s performers are committed to return in November 2007, and we have a waiting list for any cancellation that may occur. Membership in The Arizona Cowboy Symposium Association is available to all residents of The United States of America who will support our purpose and objectives. Annual dues are $30.00 per individual. For more information about this new and growing organization contact: John Payne at or tcmr@cybertrails. com. Membership has some valuable benefits. A valid membership card will admit you to all Arizona Cowboy Symposium activities at the November event. It will also get you a discount on tickets for any other event produced by the ACSA during the year. Climb on board our wagon, it s going to be a great ride! KGAF 10 Most Requested Songs 1. I had the opportunity to meet and hear Cody perform back in early March of this year and I was equally impressed with both. Cody, being from my old stomping grounds around Jacksboro, Texas, where each man pulls his own weight and Dodson is no different. His self titled album is produced by the legendary Grammy award winner Tommy Allsup along with some of the finest musicians known to man in the North Central Texas area. Recorded at Eagle Audio Recording Studio in Fort Worth, Texas, Cody did another legend in the western swing world justice as my good friend, Academy of Western Artists award winner, Curtis Potter offers his style as background vocals, along with one of the most sought after piano players in the industry today, Mr. Wayne Glasson, plus Johnny Cox on on steel, Allsup on guitar, Dale Morris on fiddle, former Asleep At The Wheel Drummer Chris York and Ronnie Ellis on bass guitar. I'd like to quote Cody as he said "I am from Jacksboro, Texas and a big fan of traditional country music". Dodson's words could not be more true as he knows his roots and his goal in the music industry, with no doubt. His selections and arrangements spells it all out with some of Potter's recordings such as Somewhere In Texas and Twin Fiddles as well as some Ray Price tunes like Sittin & Thinkin, Dodson has really nailed this album and will receive tremendous radio airplay. To listen to a couple of song clips and to purchase Cody's CD, you can find it at BackfortyBunkhouse. com on the CD Chorale Artists page. Or you can Cody at: Dodson_655@msn.com Backforty Bunkhouse Trivia Thanks to Charley Engel aka Chuckroo the Buckaroo for his correct answer to last month s trivia question. Question: What was the name of Bob Wills Horse? Correct Answer: Punkin Chuck will be receiving a copy of Bob Wills 100th Birthday CD for the only correct answer submitted in the Backforty Trivia. The Following Article Courtesy of Ok, so Punkin wasn't a Texas Playboy. But Punkin was Bob's favorite horse, so maybe you'd like a little background on him. Punkin was cream-colored with a solid white face and forelegs. The casual observer would say he was a Palomino, but actually he was of noble Arabian ancestry, bred and bought in New Mexico. His brother was bought for $125,000, but Bob Wills wouldn't take that or any part of that for him. "Mainly because he's so smart," Bob explained, "Most performing horses had to be trained for years. Punkin never had any formal training. He just naturally knew what to do at the right time - and that's more than a lot us humans know" joked Bob. Bob and his boys were the pride of Tulsa between 1934 and Each year they held a rodeo called "Bob Wills Stampede" at the Tulsa Pavilion, which was the talk of the southwest, and featured 500 riders and the best bucking broncos in the country. One of the highlights of the show was Bob's horse, Punkin. It was Bob's fiddle that made him a favorite with music lovers and dancers, but Punkin played an equal part in putting Bob's name in lights as a stage and screen star. Punkin, like Bob, was a natural actor. He played at scores of big theaters and arenas throughout the country, always standing sedately in the wings until he heard the name "Bob Wills" announced. Then one ear would go down, Punkin would brace himself, and WHAM - he would make a speedy, dramatic dash for the center of the stage. "Only trouble I ever had from him," Bob recalled, "is when we parked him in a big dressing room that housed a drinking fountain. He liked this little pastime so well that nobody else could get a drink of water." In 1950, Bob moved to Dallas, where he opened the Bob Wills Ranch House, one of the largest buildings for dancing in the country. He provided stalls for Punkin and the other horses. Punkin was shod with special rubber shoes, so Bob could ride him onto the dance floor once a night during the show. Punkin lived to be twenty five years old and died on Roy Parnell's ranch outside Fort Worth. This Month s Trivia Question for a CODY DODSON CD. Question: What was the name of Dale Evans horse.? Skeebo Norris KBAL Top Playlist "The Skeebo Show" actually began as a counterpart of Joe Baker's Backforty Bunkhouse in Ruidoso, NM with KWMW and KNMB radio. His show ran daily from 3pm 6pm, Monday through Friday. Skeebo's radio career began as an offer from station manager, Tim Keithley. The Skeebo Show featuring Country Gold, Nashville Hits and New Artists began. A Job transfer for his wife to central Texas ended the show with KWMW and KNMB, however, Skeebo hooked up with KBAL radio in San Saba, Texas and began his show again in January The show runs from 9am 12pm daily on FM.
