6 6 van die PRESIDENT from the PRESIDENT VAN DIE - FROM THE PRESIDENT Sydney HUNT Tydens die laaste Raadsvergadering in 2017 het die Finansiële Komitee aangekondig dat al die komitees hulle jaar se werk voltooi het en wel binne begroting. Veels geluk aan almal. Die goeie reën gedurende die afgelope jaar het die ekonomiese uitkyk vir ons en die Landbou as n geheel, verander. Teen die einde van die jaar het ekonome die belangrikheid van die Landbou as n ekonomiese stimulator erken. Ek hoop dat ons politici dit ook sal sien. Die invloed van die vorige vier tot vyf jaar se swak boerdery toestande het aan die kommersiële teler die belangrikheid van gehardheid tuisgebring. En met die hoë koste van voer, het die voerkrale die voordeel van basterkrag erken. Binne hierdie konteks het die Brahman floreer. Die jaar 2017 was dus baie goed vir ons Ras. In 2018 gaan al die komitees se werksaamhede During the last Council meeting of 2017, the Financial Committee announced that all the committees successfully completed their year s work and within budget. Congratulations to them all. The good rain of the past year changed the economic outlook for us, and agriculture as a whole. By year end the importance of agriculture as an economic stimulator was recognised by all economists. My hope is that our politicians will also see this. The effect of the previous 4 to 5 years of poor farming conditions brought home to the commercial breeder the importance of hardiness. And with the high cost of feed, the feedlots recognised the benefit of hybrid vigour. Within this context the Brahman has flourished. So 2017 was a very good year for our Breed. In 2018, the activities of all committees will go ahead full force with Breed Improvement at the helm. We

Die goeie werk wat hierdie komitee in die verlede gedoen het, en nog steeds doen, wys dat ons suiwer beeste wel leemtes het, maar dat ons nie ver van die markvereistes af is nie. My hoop is dat hierdie komitee sy werksaamhede sal kan voltooi. Ek voel baie sterk dat, indien ons deur die wetenskap ons Ras se enkele klein leemtes kan korrigeer, sal die Brahman n markleier word inaggenome die weerpatrone wat so negatief verander. Die Promosie Komitee gaan n baie opwindende tydperk binne met digitale media wat sterk na vore tree. Ek wil graag aanhaal uit n brief van Mnr. Daniel Malherbe van Lumico: Die belangrikste is die skuif van die Suid-Afrikaanse gehoor van gedrukte na nuwe media. Oor die afgelope 5 jaar het prominente tydskrifte en koerante se werklike sirkulasie dramaties afgeneem. Om n paar uit te lig, wat die tendens demonstreer, kan ons kyk na Huisgenoot, waarvan sirkulasie gedaal het van na uitgawes (weekliks) en Landbouweekblad, wat gedaal het van na (weekliks). Koerante is ook nie gespaar nie, en hier kan ons koerante soos Die Burger, waarvan sirkulasie gedaal het van na onder uitgawes (daagliks) en Rapport wat gedaal het van na uitgawes (weekliks), uitwys. Die afname in sirkulasie gaan gepaard met n soortgelyke afname in advertensie-inkomste, waar daar miljarde rande reeds hertoegeken is van die gedrukte na digitale media. Aan die ander kant van die spektrum is die groei van Facebook en ander digitale platforms dramaties, waar daar nou reeds meer as Facebook gebruikers in Suid-Afrika is, op Twitter, op Instagram en meer as op LinkedIn. Dit is belangrik om te verstaan dat die waarde van gehore lê in ons vermoë om hulle te kan segmenteer. Dit beteken ons kan die breë publiek, die boer en al die ander rolspelers verdeel om ons boodskap, bemarking en ander inligting by n baie selektiewe gehoor te kry. Dus spandeer ons baie minder geld en bereik ons boodskap baie meer mense wat belangstel in ons inligting. hope to be able to publish our first GEBVs (Genomic Enhanced Breeding Values) this year. The valuable work that this Committee has done in the past, and still does, showed us that our pure animals do have shortcomings, but that we are not deviated too far from the market requirements. My earnest hope is that this Committee will be able to complete its work. I feel strongly convinced that if we can, through science, correct our Breed s few small flaws, Brahman will become a market leader considering the negative change in weather patterns. The Promotion Committee is entering a very exciting time with digital media moving strongly to the front. I would like to quote from a letter of Mr. Daniel Malherbe from Lumico: The most important move is that of the South African audience from the printed media to new media. Over the last 5 years the real circulation of prominent magazines and newspapers dramatically decreased. To highlight a few to demonstrate the trend, we can look at Huisgenoot, decreasing from 350k to 200k editions (weekly). Landbouweekblad decreased from 38k to 22k editions (weekly). Newspapers have also not escaped and here we can highlight Die Burger, decreasing from 150k to 50k editions (daily) and Rapport, decreasing from 300k to 128k editions (weekly). These decreases are associated with similar decreases in income from advertising, where billions of rands already moved away from the printed to digital media. On the other side of the spectrum, there is the dramatic growth of Facebook and other digital platforms, where we now have just over Facebook users in South Africa, on Twitter, on Instagram and just more than in LinkedIn. It is important to understand that the value of these audiences lie in our ability to segment them. That is to say, we can target the broader public, the farmer and all the other role-players to deliver our message, marketing and relevant content to a very select group. We therefore spend much less money and reach a lot more people whom are interested in our information. Having said that, it is quite understandable why many businesses adjust their marketing budgets to be a digital first, and thus spend up to 70% of their

10 10 van die PRESIDENT from the PRESIDENT Met dit gesê, kan mens verstaan hoekom baie besighede hulle bemarkingsbegrotings aangepas het om n digitaal-eerste te wees en daarom word tot 70% van hulle bemarkingsbegrotings op digitale aksies gespandeer. As finale punt is dit goed om te noem dat die gedrukte media nie afgeskryf moet word nie, maar om net baie slimmer te werk met die geld wat daaraan bestee word en dit te koppel aan digitale aksies om n holistiese bemarkingsplan daar te stel. Die Raad het dit dus goed geag om Promosie vanuit hierdie twee objektiewe te bedryf. Mnr. Willem Barnard sal hoof van Promosie bly en onder andere na die gedrukte media-afdeling omsien. n Sub-komitee, onder leiding van Mnr. De Waal Nigrini, sal omsien na ons huidige en toekomstige digitale behoeftes. Promosie bly dus n baie belangrike deel van die Raad se aktiwiteite, maar hulle werksaamhede sal bepaal word deur finansiële uitdagings. Hiermee wil ek graag namens die Raad en al ons lede dankie sê aan Voermol, BKB, FNB en Cape Gate, ons premium borge, vir hulle bydrae tot ons hoogs geslaagde media veldtog van die afgelope drie jaar. Ons Bylaes (uitgawes 1 tot 4) het n geweldige impak gemaak deur die hele Suider-Afrika. Opleiding gaan, onder die bekwame leiding van Mnr. Llewellyn Labuschagne, bygestaan deur Mev. Corrie Labuschagne, weer die nodige doen om ons Telers ingelig te hou. Die konsep/uitdagings/voordele van ons Genomiese Projek gaan van 2018 af n steeds groter rol binne opleiding speel. Die Beoordelaars is weer in Februarie ge-evalueer en so ook n aantal nuwe Beoordelaars, wat tot die paneel toegevoeg is. Die toekoms van ons Ras lê opgesluit in die suksesvolle voltooiing van Rasverbetering se mandaat. Skoue vir 2018 sal sentreer om ons grootste geleentheid te Parys. Hier speel Mnre. Stefan Coetzee, Andries Marx, Jan Serfontein en die Vaalklub n leidende rol. Die ABC kongres-week lei hierdie geleentheid in, en eindig met ons Nasionale Veiling. Die is seker die besigste twee weke op ons kalender, en die hoogtepunt van wat ons hoop n baie suksesvolle 2018 sal wees. Die Raad wens al sy lede Voorspoed en Vrede toe vir marketing budget on digital actions. As a final point, it would be worth mentioning not to discard the printed media, but to use the available funds wiser and to link it to digital actions, to present a holistic marketing plan. The Council deemed it well to drive Promotion from these two objectives. Mr. Willem Barnard will remain head of Promotion and will, among others, attend to the printed media. A sub-committee, headed by Mr. De Waal Nigrini, will attend to current and future digital requirements. Promotion will therefore remain a very important part of Council s activities, but the actions will be determined by financial challenges. At this point I would like to thank our premium sponsors on behalf of Council for their contribution to our highly successful media campaign over the last three years Voermol, BKB, FNB and Cape Gate. Our Supplements (editions 1 to 4) have made a tremendous impact throughout Southern Africa. Training will again, under the competent guidance of Mr. Llewellyn Labuschagne and assisted by Ms. Corrie Labuschagne, do what is needed to keep our Breeders informed. The Judges have been evaluated again in February, as well as a number of junior Judges, whom had been added to the panel. The concept / challenges / advantages of our Genomic Project will increasingly play a more important role in training. The future of our Breed lies in the successful completion of Breed Improvement s mandate. In 2018, shows will center around our main event in Parys. In this, Messrs. Stephan Coetzee, Andries Marx, Jan Serfontein and Die Vaal Klub, will play a leading role. The ABC Congress week will usher in this event, and it will conclude with our National Auction. It would surely be the busiest two weeks on our calendar, and the highlight of what we hope would be a very successful Council wishes all its members Success and Peace in 2018.

13 Brahman telers 13 MASBRA RED BRAHMANS - Wayne Southwood - Dr. Tok and Linda Serfontein have been farming for 50 years and breeding pure Red Brahmans for 37 years. Their son, Stephan, has been involved on the farm from an early age. The most striking thing when visiting this herd is the width in the hind quarters and the quality of udders. Dr. Tok said that the most important selection criteria for good breeding cows are fertility and structural correctness. Width throughout with wide spring of rib ensures cows with good constitution that can thrive and produce even under tough conditions. Strong hooves and structurally correct legs are essential for cattle in the herd to survive in extensive conditions. Strong selection against pendulous navels in the female herd has made a big difference in ensuring the male offspring has good sheaths. Well placed udders with small teats are essential for cows that raise calves under extensive conditions. Fertility, masculinity and structural correctness are extremely important when selecting bulls. The Masbra herd has been selected and bred using the best of the best in the world. Selection of potential sires in the herd is done as much visually as on pedigree, to ensure genetic predictability. The Cherokee Red Brahman herd was established by CE Yoakum in the early 1940s, in Cherokee, Texas. They carry a lot of meat and are very fertile, structurally correct, mobile, and can survive under very hard conditions. WD S 78 was a Cherokee bred bull that made a huge impact in the Red Brahman industry. His input was specifically noticed in the meat and bigger frame of his progeny. Masbra is continuing with this type of cattle. In 1975 Dr. Daan Claasen visited the Cherokee Ranch where he bought 20 pregnant cows and imported them to Origstad. He later sold some of the heifers to Dr. Tok. He also sold 10 of the cows and two imported Cherokee bulls to Reg Hunt of Warrenton. Dr. Tok and Reg Hunt became close friends and he was so kind as to let him select a few females from his herd. Dr. Tok travelled America extensively, visiting the prominent Red

14 14 Brahman telers Breeders looking for bulls that he could buy semen from. They continued using pure red bulls to build up the herd of top quality, meat-type cattle. Over the last two decades Larry Jansen and Dinah Weil gave Dr. Tok good advice on producing good purebred cattle. They were responsible for developing a huge demand for Red Brahman in Mexico, Columbia, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Panama. There is also a huge demand for Brahman in countries north of South Africa. Breeding Policy The Masbra breeding program is based on producing high quality superior Pure Red Brahman genetics for both seed stock and commercial producers. The stud adheres strictly to the basic principles of breeding. An intense line breeding program is in place. Fertile cow families with predictability have been built into the Masbra herd. By only producing from the best pure Red cattle and then selecting the best from these, the herd is continually enhanced with top producing bulls and females that breed true to character. Masbra have long recognized that the most essential and fundamental ingredients of a truly top herd is its productivity and quality. Qualities such as femininity in their cow herd and masculinity in the bulls have been firmly established as can be seen in uniform appearance of the herd. The herd is measured by performance testing and inter-calving period, producing good calves on a regular basis. Dr. Tok said It all boils down to the fertility, superior performance, genetic consistency, structural correctness, beefiness and breed character. In the end, as all true cattle breeders know, there is nothing to equal the predictability of pure bred cattle. In conclusion - they raise Pure Red Predictable Brahman which are selected for their ability to produce and reproduce on natural grazing alone. The farm is mainly Bush Veld with predominantly Red Grass, Smuts Finger Grass, Fan Grass, lots of Acacia trees and Velvet Raisin (Rosyntjiebos). In the dry years the cattle survive on leaves and pods of these trees. They try to farm as closely to nature as possible. Their average rainfall is between 450 and 550 mm per annum.

16 16 Brahman telers MEET THE DREAM TEAM - Wayne Southwood - Jan Serfontein of the Serfbred Brahman Stud is the leader of the Dream Team. He is a visionary with exceptional leadership skills and is the motivation behind one of the most successful Brahman herds in the world. The Dream Team Standing: Petrus Serfontein, Carla de Kock, Jan Serfontein Jnr. Seated: Jan and Juanita Serfontein Juanita Serfontein Juanita Serfontein and Carla de Kock are both competent inseminators It is very seldom that I find a family business that works like Clockwork, like this one. How many times does a son take over the family business and within a few years the company is bankrupt. Jan has an amazing ability to lead and motivate people; he is a problem solver of note and in some circles is known as the Today Man. When he finds a solution to a problem it is rectified today. The Serfontein Group is a third generation, familybased business in the Potchefstroom district. They are breeders of top class Manso type Brahmans. They are also producers of Dekalb chickens which they supply to Southern and Central Africa. They operate from three farms totalling ha, which vary from Bush Veld, open Savannah and some pastures under permanent irrigation. Jan is the dreamer in the family and the Team supports him all the way. Jan and Juanita have two sons, Jan Junior and Petrus, who are mainly responsible for the poultry business. Their daughter Carla de Kock is responsible for the Brahman stud. Farming is in their blood The chicken operation was started in 1946 by TA and PJ Serfontein. The Serfbred herd was established in Prior to this they had a Jersey herd, where the cows were mated to Brahman bulls. When Jan decided to become serious about the Brahmans, he bought 15 pure bred cows and one bull. Over a period of six months, he took over a few herds and ended up with 800 females. Out of these cows he selected the best 150 and slaughtered the rest. Jan Junior started farming at the age of 12. On Friday afternoons a driver would fetch him and they would inspect, inoculate, dip, dehorn and tag animals in the different herds. He was always more interested in farming than school. All the children and grandchildren are introduced to cattle at a very young age. Jan Senior only has a Diploma from Potchefstroom Agricultural College and now he is the Managing Director of a multi-million-rand company. He is a man who wants to learn something every day and is continuously learning from successful people.

17 Brahman telers 17 Serfbred cattle are highly efficient meat producing animals When he hears of a success story or an outstanding bull, he will investigate. According to Jan Senior it is more important in life to be able to deal with people and to solve problems than to have fancy degrees. The basic business principles implemented are honesty, integrity, hard work and a burning desire to be the best at whatever they do. Jan said that their breeding goal is to breed efficient genetics for their clients to be able to produce adaptable, fertile, fast growing and profitable cattle that produce off grass. He said Your approach must always be aimed at the end user; we need to produce meat for the housewife at a reasonable price. To do this we need to breed cattle that can produce on grass; good fertile cattle that can produce a calf on time, with the best feed conversion that can change grass into meat, requiring very little other inputs. With climate changes as they are, we need to have the right breed that can survive on the veld without extra feeding, and with minimum extra cost to ensure that your income per hectare is optimised. Jan said In a nutshell, we want to be the best - breeding the best Brahmans and producing the best chickens. We achieve this by investing in the best genetics in the world and dedicated, hard work. This is not an eight to five business, it is 24-hours-a-day and 365-days-a-year job. If you have the passion, the success will come by itself. They place a huge emphasis on the cow-herd. The average weight of the cows is between 550 and 630kg; the bulls are between 900 and 1 000kg. The average weaning weight is 210kg in a dry year and 260kg in a wet year, off the veld. They keep all females until they calve; any cow that is not a good mother is slaughtered. Sub-standard cattle are never sold for breeding purposes. More or less 100 cows are inseminated each year with the best semen they can find. Jan and Carla do extensive research to find bulls with the best EBVs in the world to use. Jan has travelled extensively overseas to locate top genetics. They are even stricter on the bulls and only 3% of their bulls are ever sold. Jan said it is not worth selling bulls for cheap prices like R With the weaner prices as they are it is far more profitable to sell them at seven months to earn R9 000 and more, than to grow them out to three years and then get next to nothing for them. Instead he sells four-year old proven bulls that have good progeny on the ground for R They have some regular clients in Zimbabwe and Botswana. They are having their annual sale on the 19 th of April, mostly cows that have proven themselves; they will be in calf or have a calf at foot. They have developed a strong client base of return buyers for these productive cows, even some commercial breeders buy these animals. Jan said he is expecting the average price to be R for three-in-one cows at the next sale. Weighing is done at 203 days, when the calves are weaned. Most of the bulls are then sold to feedlots and only the cream of the crop is retained. Animals are weighed again at 12 months and 18 months. They use the HerdMaster farm management program to process this data. The type of cows they breed must have good udders, teats, depth of body, meat characteristics while still maintaining femininity and they must calve easily. Outstanding Achievements SER was the Breed Champion Grey Brahman cow at the Beef Expo in Parys in She went on to represent South Africa in the Miss World competition, where she became Miss Europe/Asia/ Africa and Australia. She then went on to compete with the USA and Columbian cows, where she was placed 4 th. SER Runner-up Supreme Beef Animal at the Rand Show in SER Gold Cup winner at the Royal Show SER Super Cow at the Brahman World Congress in SER Best Breeding Bull in SA/most progeny 2015.

18 18 Brahman telers Bulls used to build the herd JDH A Dakota Manso 599 was a bull that made an impact on the herd. He bred meat into the cattle and his females are highly fertile. SER was bred from him. JDH Karu Manso 800 (SER and SER ), JDH Grande Manso 488, JDH Sir Shano Manso 825, JJ Dixor Crata 258 and MR V8 702 and 700 are more sires used with great success. Bulls used recently: JDH Gene Manso 177, JDH Domino Manso 200 and JDH Clanton Manso 313. Bulls for the future: JDH Layton de Manso 701 and JDH Becton de Manso 490. Serfbred is concentrating on carcass weight to improve the herd. Closing Advice Jan said You must check what the other guys are doing, don t just think you are the only one that knows what s going on. As long as a cow has a good udder and teats you can breed her, just use a good bull. Daarna het sy meegeding teen MISS USA, MISS USA opvolger en MISS COLUMBIA waar sy n 4de plek behaal het. Dit is voorwaar n wêreldklas prestasie. Jan en Juanita Serfontein het Serfbred Brahmane in Texas verteenwoordig om die toekenning te ontvang.

Dit sluit in, onder andere, die opstelling van die boodskap wat ter bevordering van die Brahman Brand, doelwitte en gebeure aan teikenmarkte op n geïntegreerde en volhoubare basis op die verskillende platforms en deur verskeie kanale bemark sal word. Ons het ook die besluit om die twee Facebookplatforms wat ons tans het, naamlik die Facebook Page en die Facebook Group te behou en verder te ontwikkel as twee unieke kanale tot ons beskikking. Deel van ons strategie is om die platforms vir die telers beskikbaar te stel en om die Ras uit te bou. Rakende die webwerf wil ons graag vir die telers inlig dat Lumico en Mia, ons webmeester, in kontak is en reeds kyk na maniere om die webtuiste meer verbruikersvriendelik te maak. Hulle sal ook n proses in plek sit om op n meer gereelde basis nuwe, relevante inhoud op die webtuiste te plaas. Lumico gaan ook vir ons kyk na die e-handel platform. Die strategie wat ons volg met die digitale bemarking is tweeledig; eerstens gaan ons op die Brahmanhandelsmerk fokus en dit uitbou deur middel van gereelde kommunikasie op ons digitale kanale. Tweedens gaan ons die databasis wat ons reeds het, verder ontwikkel om seker te maak dat die eksterne kommunikasie vir ons langtermyn waarde skep, wat ons op n deurlopende basis sal kan gebruik. Ter verdere verduideliking meld ons dat die digitale bemarking wat deur die Genootskap onderneem word met behulp van Lumico, hoewel telers direk en indirek daardeur bevoordeel sal word, nie bemarking deur die teler van sy eie kudde en of veilings vervang nie. Telers word daarop gewys dat die reikwydte van digitale bemarking reeds diè van gedrukte media oorskry. Derhalwe, indien enige telers beoog om hul kuddes digitaal te bemark of n veiling wil aanbied en digitaal bemark, kan u gerus vir Lumico of enige ander verskaffer van digitale bemarking gebruik. Indien u egter deur middel van vermelde Facebook Page wil bemark, hoef u slegs n e-pos aan brahman@ lumico.co.za te stuur om die bal aan die rol te kry. Vandaar sal die Lumico-span opvolg met die teler om u behoefte te bepaal en Lumico sal behulpsaam kan wees om riglyne in plek sit om die uitvoer van u bemarkingsveldtog te bestuur. Laastens, na aanleiding van n digitale ekosisteemontleding, het ons opgemerk dat die inhoud wat die beste doen op ons Facebook Page dié inhoud is waar mense met hulle diere uitgebeeld word. Ons wil u dus graag uitnooi om enige relevante inhoud met ons te deel by brahman@lumico.co.za. Stuur vir ons n foto met n byskrif of n video en ons sal dit verwerk en plaas. Part of our strategy is to make these plarforms available to our Members in order to promote the Breed. Regarding the web, we would like to inform our Members that Lumico and our own webmaster, Mia, are in contact and already investigated ways to turn our web into a more user-friendly page, as well as updating the web on a more regular basis with new relevant information. Lumico will also investigate the e-commerce platform. The strategy that we are following with the digital marketing is dual-purpose firstly we are going to focus on the Brahman trademark to expand it through regular communication on our digital channels. Secondly we are going to expand our current database to ensure that the external communication will generate longterm value which we will be able to utilize continuously. We would like to mention that the digital marketing undertaken by the Society with the assistance of Lumico, even though Members will benefit from it directly or indirectly, will not replace the markting of Members of their own herds or auctions. We would like to point out that the reach of our digital marketing already exceed that of the printed media. Therefore, if any of our Members intend to digitally market their herds or auctions, you are welcome to contact Lumico or any other digital marketing service provider. However, if you would like to use the mentioned Facebook Page, you only need to send an to brahman@lumico.co.za to start the process. From there the Lumico team will follow up with a needs assessment and will put guidelines in place to manage your marketing. 26 26 Skoureëls en veilings BEOORDELAARSBELEID JUDGES POLICY Ingevolge die Genootskap se beleid om jaarliks sy beoordelaarsbeleid te evalueer en na gelang van omstandighede aan te pas en indien nodig meer klem te plaas op sekere ekonomies belangrike eienskappe of wetenskaplik meer toeligting te gee in die uitvoering daarvan, is tydens die Beoordelaarskonferensie 1 Maart 2018 konsensus bereik oor die volgende. In accordance with the Society s policy to evaluate its judges policy on an annual basis and to amend it according to circumstances, and, if necessary, place more emphasis on certain economically important traits, or give scientific elucidation on the implementation of such, consensus was reached on the following, at the Judges Conference 1 March DOELSTELLING Die inhoud van die dokument het ten doel om jou as beoordelaar met spesifieke verwysing na jou ambassadeursrol en verantwoordelikheid om aan die hand van ras- en produksiestandaarde, jou beoordeling nougeset en as belangrike opleidingstaak in die skouring te vervul. Jou plasing en kommentaar is dus deurslaggewend in die strewe na ons breë missie, nl: Die teel van Brahmane wat onder Suid-Afrikaanse klimatologiese toestande ekonomiese opbrengste lewer, as gevolg van sy aanpasbaarheid, doeltreffende benutting van natuurlike weiveld en die totaliteitsverbetering van die ras. 1. ALGEMENE REËLS 1.1 Dat beoordelaars streng daarop moet let dat geen dier(e) beoordeel mag word indien die ouderdom van n dier 15 (vyftien) maande en ouer is geen brand- en tatoeërmerk op die dier verskyn nie Diere ouer as 20 maande met vars brand mag nie geplaas word nie. 1.2 Dat beoordelaars nie n vertoner se diere in aanmerking sal neem vir enige plasing indien die handleiers nie ingevolge die Genootskap se amptelike drag geklee is nie. 1.3 Reproduksie: Dat alle verse ouer as 32 maande moet dragtig gesertifiseer wees, en/of reeds gekalf het. (Die kalf moet vertoon word) Verse OBJECTIVE The contents of this document aim to assist you as judge, with specific reference to your role as ambassador and responsibility to, on the basis of breed and production standards, execute your judging in the show ring meticulously, and as an important training assignment. Your placing and comments are therefore crucial in the pursuit of our broad mission, viz: The breeding of Brahmans that perform economically under South African climatologically conditions, due to their adaptability, efficient utilization of natural grazing, and the total improvement of the breed. 1. GENERAL RULES 1.1 Judges should pay meticulous attention to the fact that no animal/s 15 (fifteen) months and older, without brands and ear tattoos may be judged Animals older than 20 months with fresh brand, may not be placed. 1.2 An exhibitor s animals will not be considered for any placing, unless the handlers are dressed in accordance with the Society s official dress. 1.3 Reproduction: That all heifers older than 32 months are certified in calf, or already calved. (The calf must be exhibited) Heifers

27 Skoureëls en veilings 27 tussen die ouderdom maande wat dragtig gesertifiseer is, sal tot haar voordeel in die beoordeling van die klas wees Dit is nie n vereiste dat Verse tussen maande dragtig gesertifiseer is nie. 1.4 Dat jy as beoordelaar voortdurend daarna sal streef dat jou beoordeling as n professionele opleidingstaak gesien word en jou kommentaar opbouend en positief aangebied word. 1.5 Dat beoordelaars streng sal optree teenoor enige dier wat moeilik in die ring hanteerbaar is of om die een of ander rede onhanteerbaar is. 1.6 Alle bulle ouer as 15 maande moet n neusring in hê. 1.7 n Koei moet haar eie volgeregistreerde kalf hê. 1.8 Die kalf van n koei wat beoordeel word, mag nie ouer as 210 dae oud wees op die dag van beoordeling nie. 1.9 Geen bees sal beoordeel word indien dit aan die kant van die ring, of enige ander voorwerp, vasgemaak is nie n Tweede hanteerder sal, volgens die beoordelaars se diskresie, toegelaat word in die ring om diere te beweeg wat lui of onbeweeglik is Die kalf van n koei moet teenwoordig wees in of langs die ring wanneer sy beoordeel word. Volgens die Beoordelaars se diskresie kan die kalf verwyder word, nadat die Beoordelaar die kalf gesien het n Koei sonder n kalf wat nie dragtig is nie word nie beoordeel Vroulike diere wat die ouderdom van 30 maande bereik het, moet die dag van beoordeling as dragtig gesertifiseer wees, en/of met n kalf loop (nie-halter klas) Slegs volgeregistreerde diere sal beoordeel word. Diere waarvan hul registrasie status onafgehandel (pending) of op navraag is, mag nie ingeskryf word nie. (Laat inskrywings moet deur die kantoor gekontroleer word, as volgeregistreer om deel te neem aan beoordeling) DIE BEOORDELAARSBELEID Ten einde jou in staat te stel om die verantwoordelike taak wat aan jou opgedra is, so effektief as moontlik uit te voer, moet genoegsame klem geplaas word op die volgende belangrike eienskappe. Eienskappe varieer volgens hulle relatiewe belangrikheid teenoor mekaar en moet daar gevolglik altyd gelet word op die ekonomiese belangrikheid daarvan in vergeleke met funksionaliteit. At the judges discretion after he has seen the calf, it may be removed A cow without her calf and not in calf will not be judged Females which reached the age of 30 months, must be certified in calf or have a calf at foot on the day of judging. (non-halter trained class) 1.13 Only fully registered animals will be judged. Animals with pending registration (held entry), may not be entered. (Late entries must be screened by die Office, and certified as fully registered, in order to be exhibited.) JUDGE S POLICY In order to enable you to execute the responsible task entrusted to you as efficiently as possible, sufficient emphasis should be placed on the following important traits: Traits vary in accordance with their relative importance and consequently continuous attention should be paid to their economic importance compared to functionality. Turned out front legs and a straight hock can for example be identified as two faulty leg traits, but the hock would be judged as more important, as it could adversely influence the primary function of a bull, namely to serve. Die kop, skof- ontwikkeling, nek (nekplooitjies), speenontwikkeling en wig. Let veral na die skofplasing direk op die skouer. Per definisie sal meeste van die eienskappe ook beskryf kon word met woorde soos genoem onder Manlikheid, hoewel met die klem op fynere ontwikkeling. (3) Reproduksie / Teelorgane Hoewel die aksente nie in volgorde van belangrikheid genoem word nie, is dit baie belangrik dat vrugbaarheid genoegsaam beklemtoon word. Geen verskonings vir afwykings in van die volgende eienskappe moet toegelaat word nie:- a) Testis te klein of te gedraai. Skrotumomtrek (SO)- metings In die geval van SO-metings word die aandag daarop gevestig dat indien die gegewens beskikbaar is (METINGS WORD SLEGS GEDOEN BY SKOUE WAAR 80 EN MEER DIERE VERTOON WORD EN TEN OPSIGTE VAN MANLIKE DIERE 15 MAANDE OUDERDOM), moet bulle geselekteer word met n SO waarvan die parameter nie minder as 5 mag wees nie. b) Onvoldoende ontwikkeling van die vroulike geslagsorgane bv. vulva en spene, c) Aangesien skoudiere aan optimale toestande onderwerp word, is daar geen rede hoekom produksie nie aan optimale standaarde gemeet moet word nie. Tussen-kalfperiodes (TKP) langer as 425 dae en dae sedert laaste kalwing van meer as 399 dae moet ook gepenaliseer word (indien beskikbaar). your placing as well as your comments continuously focus on what the beef chain or market demands. In order to maintain this market share, the following traits should enjoy continuous emphasis in the judging ring: (A) SEXUAL TRUENESS (1) Masculinity Which traits constitute a function of masculinity? The head, hump development, neck (neck pleats), testicle development, wedge and even darkening of color in most of these traits. Per definition most of these traits will be described with words such as: strong, broad, prominent and balanced. (2) Femininity Which traits constitute a function of femininity? The head, hump development, neck (neck pleats), teat development and wedge. Pay special attention to positioning of hump directly on shoulders. Per definition, most of the traits will also be described with words as mentioned under Masculinity, but with the emphasis on finer development. (3) Reproduction/Reproductive organs Even though the emphasis are not mentioned in order of importance, it is very important that fertility should be stressed sufficiently. No considerations for defects in any of the following traits should be allowed: a) Testes too small or too twisted. Scrotum size (SC) measurements. When judging SC where the relevant data are available, only bulls with an SC of which the parameter is not less than 5 may be selected. (MEASUREMENTS ARE ONLY DONE AT SHOWS WHERE 80 OR MORE ANIMALS ARE EXHIBITED AND ON BULLS AGED 15 MONTHS). b) Insufficient development of the female genitalia, e.g. vulva and teats. c) Since show animals are subjected to optimal conditions, there is no reason why production should not be measured by optimal standards. Inter calving periods (ICP) exceeding 425 days and days since last calving of more than 399 days must also be penalized (if relevant data are available). d) If a poor calf is exhibited with a cow, the cow must be penalized. Remember that the calf is also an indication of the cow s stage of lactation.

(B) KONSTITUSIE Eienskappe soos; (1) loopvermoë of mobiliteit Gedagtig aan die feit dat die Brahman by uitstek n ekstensiewe ras is, is beweeglikheid van kardinale belang. Been- of voetfoute moet streng na gelet word. Gee noukeurige aandag aan die dier se agterbene, veral hakke en kootgewrigte, aangesien dit die dier se beweeglikheid bepaal. Kootgewrigte moet van mediumlengte wees. 2) breedte in die borsvloer 3) middelstuk goeie oogspierontwikkeling en ribsprong en 4) strukturele korrektheid is almal n funksie van konstitusie. Let veral op na n sterk breë bek, n goedgevormde skof wat direk op die skouer geplaas is, goeie skoueraanghegting sonder prominente skouerknoppe, lengte en breedte in die agterkwart met goed gevulde binne en buite dye. n Breë borsvloer sal normaalweg gepaard gaan met breedte in die voorkwart, terwyl n nou bors aanleiding kan gee tot n nou stand in die voorbene. (C) VLEISEIENSKAPPE / BESPIERING 1) Let hier op na ekonomies belangrike eienskappe wat n funksie is van groei en bespiering en plaas die aksent op:- a) lengte, breedte, diepte en balans b) Let op na die gedefineerdheid van oogspier, rug, lende en lengte van heupbeen na sitbeen (Kruis) 2) Massa (M) (D) In die geval van M word die aandag daarop gevestig dat indien die gegewens beskikbaar is (METINGS WORD SLEGS GEDOEN BY SKOUE WAAR 80 EN MEER DIERE VERTOON WORD), moet gepoog word om diere te selekteer wat tussen die parameters 6 tot 8 is. In jou kommentaar moet die aksent geplaas word op die feit dat die dier te groot neig en ingevolge markvereistes die dier buite die ras se oorhoofse seleksiedoelwitte val. Let ook veral op na oorvet diere en diskrimineer daarteen. SKEDE / PREPUTIUM In terme van n bul se funksionele vermoë (B) CONSTITUTION Traits such as; 1) Walking ability or mobility Mindful of the fact that the Brahman is preeminently an extensive breed, mobility is of cardinal importance. Leg and hoof faults must receive serious consideration. Give meticulous attention to the animal s hind legs, especially hocks and pasterns, as they determine an animal s mobility. Pasterns must be of medium length. 2) Width of the chest floor. 3) barrel good eye muscle development and ribs well sprung. 4) Structural correctness each a function of constitution. Pay special attention to a strong, broad muzzle, a well formed hump placed directly on the shoulders, good shoulder attachment without prominent shoulder bumps, length and broadness in the hindquarter and well defined inner and outer thighs. A broad chest floor will normally go hand in hand with width in the forequarter, while a narrow chest can lead to a narrow stance in the front legs. (C) BEEF TRAITS / MUSCLING 1) Concentrate here on important economically important traits that are a function of growth and muscling and place the emphasis on:- a) Length, width, depth and balance. b) Look at definition of eye muscle, back, loin and length from hipbone to pin bone (rump). 2) Mass (M) (D) In the case of M attention is drawn to the fact that, should this data be available (MEASUREMENTS ARE ONLY DONE AT SHOWS WHERE 80 AND MORE ANIMALS ARE EXHIBITED), you should endeavor to select animals between parameters 6 to 8. In your comments the emphasis should fall on the fact that the animal inclines towards being too big, and in terms of market requirements falls outside the primary selection objectives of the breed. Give special attention to over fat animals and discriminate against such. SHEATH / PREPUTIUM In terms of the bull s functional ability to serve being an economically important trait, adequate attention should be given to the preputium. During judging of the preputium the following should receive special attention:

By die beoordeling van die preputium moet veral gelet word op die: 1) Preputiale opening Die opening moet klein en digsluitend wees. 2) Preputiale tuit n Tuit wat lank en atonies (uitpeul) vertoon, moet teen gediskrimineer word. n Kort en ferm tuit is dus wenslik. Die preputiale tuit moet verkieslik nie onder die Os-tot-Os lyn, m.a.w. indien u n reguit lyn vanaf die hak tot by die knie sou deurtrek, hang nie. Die preputiale opening sowel as preputiale tuit moet nie ventraal projekteer nie, maar kranioventraal, m.a.w. vanaf die buik in die rigting na die voorste by-kloutjies. 3) Naelvel Die naelvel moet verkieslik nie oorontwikkeld wees nie, m.a.w. moet nie swaar voorkom of soos n gordyn voor die naelvel hang nie. Diskrimineer daarteen. Eversie (uitsakking) van die Lamina interna (binneweefsel om die penis) moet by wyse van uitsondering geskied en nie as n vaste reël voorkom nie. Diskrimineer weereens daarteen. Die naelvel kan pendulous vertoon, maar geen los velvoue moet voorkom op die Lamina eksterna (buiteweefsel) nie. KOMMENTAAR 3.1 Maak seker dat jy jou terminologie ken en korrek gebruik wanneer na n bepaalde eienskappe of deel van n dier verwys word. 3.2 Wees spesifiek in jou kommentaar en moet onder geen omstandighede woorde gebruik soos; lekker, mooi, pap of bloot te wil sê ek hou van. Uitlatings soos Vers Nr 1 is beter as Vers No 2 omdat sy beter bespiering het, gee geen verduideliking aan die vertoner of omstander indien u nie kan uitwys watter ekonomiese eienskappe op vers 1 haar laat uitstaan bo vers Nr. 2 nie. 3.3 Gee slegs die belangrikste redes vir jou plasings deur jou plasing in pare te verduidelik, bv. 1 met 2, 2 met 3 ens. Werk metodies deur u plasings. 3.4 Vermy aannames of stellings wat wetenskaplik nie verantwoordbaar is nie. 3.5 Lewer opbouende kommentaar en moenie skroom om voor die publiek komplimente aan (E) 1) Preputial opening The opening must be small and tightly closed. 2) Preputial nozzle A nozzle which is long and atonic (protruding) must be discriminated against. A short and firm nozzle is therefore desirable. The preputial nozzle must preferably not hang below the Osto-Os line (an imaginary straight line from the hock to the knee). The preputial opening, as well as the preputial nozzle, must not project ventrically, but cranioventrically, in other words from the abdomen towards the front dew claws. 3) Navel The navel must preferably not be over developed, in other words must not appear bulky or hang like a curtain in front of the navel. Discriminate against such an event. Eversion (prolapse) of the Lamina interna (inner tissue surrounding the penis) should occur by way of exception and not as a rule and discrimination should once again be applied. The navel can appear pendulous, but no loose skin folds must appear on the Lamina externa (outer tissue). COMMENTS 3.1 Make certain that you know your terminology and apply it correctly when referring to a specific trait or part of the anatomy of an animal. 3.2 Be specific in your remarks and under no circumstances use words like: nice, attractive, flabby, or a mere expression like I like Remarks like Heifer No. 1 is better than Heifer No. 2, because she has better muscling, gives no explanation to the exhibitor or bystander, unless you can point out which economic traits in Heifer No. 1 stand out above Heifer No Give only the major reasons for your placing by explaining your placing in pairs, e.g. 1 compared to 2, 2 to 3, etc. Be methodical in your placing. 3.4 Avoid assumptions or statements that are not scientifically accountable. 3.5 Your comments must be constructive and do not hesitate to give compliments to an exhibitor(s) for an exceptional animal, group of animals, or champions in the presence of the public. Remember that you are not representing yourself. You are acting as ambassador for the Brahman breed. 3.6 In the comments endeavor to organize

Kyk ook nou veral noukeurig na die dier se agterbene, veral hakke en kootgewrigte (loopvermoë) your reasons in a logical sequence, so as to explain those traits that have influenced you in your placing. It is recommended that you apply the following methodology, as guideline: Start with the head and work systematically towards functionality: (1) HEAD (2) FOREQUARTERS (3) BARREL (4) HINDQUARTER (5) CONSTITUSION (6) REPRODUCTION / SHEATH AND NAVEL SKIN / REPRODUCTIVE ORGANS (F) METHOD OF JUDGING To act successfully as Judge it is recommended that you use the following method as guideline to execute your task in a professional, methodical an organized way. Judging basically comprises two phases, namely a Qualifying Phase and a Comparative Phase that have to be continuously applied throughout each class. 1. THE QUALIFYING PHASE As soon as all the animals for the relevant class are in the ring, place yourself in such a position that you can instruct the ring steward to allow every animal move in your direction, so that you can judge every animal from the front, while walking. Always let the animals walk clockwise in the ring, because it places the handler on the outside of the animal. Now you take note of the following: (a) Head and muzzle, front legs (walking ability) and chest, Now step to the inside so that the handler is on the outside and observe the following: (b) Muzzle (pay special attention to the lower jaw) neck, shoulders, hump and spring of rib, length and depth of body, preputium, navel skin, hindquarter and walking ability. Now step backwards while the animal is moving away from you, and observe the following:- (c) Observe the pin bone width, since it is generally a function of the width across the entire body of the animal. Now also carefully observe the animal s hind legs, especially hocks and pasterns (walking ability). If necessary, you can let the animal stand still, while carefully looking at the following:

(ii) indien n dier uit die beoordelaarsring hardloop, word hy gediskwalifiseer en nie verder beoordeel nie. Nou is jy klaar met jou kwalifiserende fase en diere met ooglopende eienskappe waarmee jy nie tevrede was nie is uit die ring, terwyl jy nou begin met die Vergelykende Fase. 2. DIE VERGELYKENDE FASE Op die stadium behoort jy alreeds n baie goeie indruk te hê van die standaard van die klas, watter dier(e) jou beïndruk het of selfs jou waarskynlike 1ste plasing. Posisioneer jouself nou in die middel van die ring, terwyl die diere in die rondte om jou loop. Jy kan selfs die volgorde van die diere begin verander deur jou tweede beste dier agter die beste dier te laat loop. Die diere word nou met mekaar vergelyk. Let nou op na die volgende:- (a) Begin om die beste en die 2de beste ens. uit te haal en tentatief met mekaar te vergelyk waar hulle in die middel van die ring langs mekaar staan. Plaas die diere van links na regs vanaf voor gesien. (b) Kyk nou veral na eienskappe soos:- Geslagsegtheid, Konstitusie, Vleiseienskappe/Bespiering en Skede/Preputium soos na verwys in die Beoordelaarsbeleid. (c) Kyk die diere nou finaal deur waar hulle langs mekaar staan, terwyl jy bv. die 2de en 3de plasing weer laat loop om absolute sekerheid te verkry. Vergelyk die 1ste met die 2de, 2de met 3de ens. (i) Oorvet diere Indien n dier die beste in sy groep is, maar die dier is oorvet, word die dier een plek gestraf afgeplaas. Dit sal in die kommentaar uitgewys word. (d) Kyk veral na die metings op die inskrywingskaart en gebruik die Brahdex- (d) Take note of the bull s testes (testicular development), or in the case of a female animal, sexual development, as well as the udder, teat shape, and udder attachment. (e) Docility :- Animals that handle with difficulty in the show ring. (i) An animal that pulls free from its halter in the ring gets ONE chance only. (ii) If an animal runs out of the judges ring, it is disqualified and not judged any further. Now you have finished with your Qualifying Phase and animals with obvious characteristics you were not satisfied with, are out of the ring. Now you can commence with the Comparative Phase. 2. THE COMPARATIVE PHASE At this stage you should already have a very good idea of the standard of the class, which animal(s) have impressed you, or even your probable first placing. Now position yourself now in the centre of the ring, while the animals circulate around you. You can even start changing the sequence of the animals, letting your second best animal walk behind your best one. The animals are now compared with one another. Note the following: (a) Start by taking out your best and second best placing etc., tentatively comparing them with each other where they stand next to each other in the middle of the ring. Place the animals from left to right as seen from the front. (b) Now concentrate mainly on traits like Sexual trueness, Constitution, Beef properties/muscling and Sheath/ Preputium as referred to in the Judges Policy. (c) Make a final observation of the animals, while you let the 2 nd and 3 rd placing walk again, to gain absolute certainty. Compare the 1 st with the 2 nd, 2 nd with 3 rd, etc. (i) Overfat animals If an animal is the best in its group, but overfat, it is demoted by one placing. This will be explained in the commentary. (d) Look at the measurements on the entry card and use the Brahdex data to explain a trait during your commentary. (e) Now instruct your ring steward to place the animals from left to right, seen from the front. Place at least 6 animals, depending on the number of entries.

CLASS 139: BREEDPLAN MALE ON SHOW GENERAL RULES 1. Official Brahman Show Catalogue A Catalogue with the latest official details will be supplied to the show, provided that: i. if the enclosed entry form is submitted at least one month before the show by fax or to the Brahman office; ii. the cut-off date used for the calculation of age for each Class will be the first day of the show month and must be submitted to the Brahman Office; iii. Individual Class Entry R (VAT inclusive) iv. Show entry fees for animals on sale will be R150 (VAT inclusive). v. All animals on offer must be exibited. vi. no entry fees will be refunded after the closing date. Brahman Society, Brahman Bank Account, Standard Bank, Account number , branch code ; vii. entry fees are payable with registration to The Brahman Breeders Society. 2. Unofficial catalogue If the show society prepares its own catalogue, the following MUST appear on the front page: Particulars not checked by Brahman Society. 3. Judges Will be nominated by the Brahman Society. Details will be forwarded to the show committee. The Brahman Society contact person is Sietze Smit, nr , or the Brahman Office. 4. Identification and ownership No animal without official identification in the ear and, if older than 15 months, without the official brand, will be allowed in the ring. If a purchased animal is not yet transferred to the exhibitor making the entry, the animal will be rejected. 5. Show society rules Exhibitors must comply with all veterinary regulations, transport permits and other show affairs. CA and TB certificates must be send to the office on/or before 12 August Red and grey classes If more than 30 red or grey Brahmans are entered, red and grey MAY be judged separate. 7. Pregnancy and fertility Females which reached the age of 30 months at judging day must be certified in calf or should have calved already calf must be exhibited (submission of a birth notification serves as proof). Heifers from 24 to 30 months need not be certified, but if certified in calf, it will be to their advantage. Pregnancy tests must be carried out by a vet and such certification must be presented to the Brahman Technical Advisor (TA) before judging. The TA will

Calving dates Only calving dates (birth notification) which were submitted to the office in time, will be considered. Flushings will be considered if submitted via the official Schedule O form. 9. Calves A cow without a calf or which is not in calf, will not be judged. 10. Animal younger than 8 months No animal younger than 8 months will be allowed or entered at the show. 11. Maximum number of entries No restriction will be placed on the number of animals entered by a Breeder. 12. Super Cow, Breedplan Male, as well as Breedplan Female will NOT participate in the Championships. NON-HALTER TRAINED SHOW RULES 1. The presentation of Non Halter tame shows will be known as CHALLENGE in order to distinguish it from halter tame shows. Example: Swartruggens CHALLENGE 2018 or National CHALLENGE The National CHALLENGE should be presented parallel with the National Championships. 3. The Society s show rules will be applicable except in cases where it is directly and logically in conflict with halter tame show rules. 4. All handlers in kraals to be dressed in accordance with the rules. 5. The Judges Policy of the Society will be applicable 6. Grey and red animals to be judged separately. A minimum of 30 animals per type is needed to show separately. Less than 30 entries per typed must be showed together. 7. Judges to be appointed by the Society. 8. If logistically expedient, entries may be limited. 9. No animal may participate at the same show in both the halter trained and the non-halter trained classes. (a) No animal entered in a halter trained class may be entered in the nonhaltered classes in all future shows. (b) An exhibitor may show different animals in the halter trained and non-halter trained classes at the same show. 10. Group classes are not presented. 11. Only three placings are made 12. In order to ensure a smooth flow animals to be judged are held in single holding pens outside of the arena. Animals will enter the arena in accordance with entry numbers to be painted on the relevant animal. At least 5 must be available. (Holding pens to be marked with a W (Waiting pens) 13. The arena must be at least 18m X 18m. 14. The arena will consist of six pens lined up directly adjacent to the judging ring. The placings made by the judge to be placed in the pens. Animals will be brought into the arena one by one as indicated by the judge and will then be judged. After placement and at the discretion of the judge, animals placed lower down will be moved one pen lower down, with the animals in pen 6 leaving the arena. 15. Pens for animals to participate in the championships are erected close to the judging ring to ease the availability of animals for judging. At least eight pens must be availlable and marked K {Championships}) 16. Poor temperament Animals that are difficult to control will be disqualified. 17. Animals that are not show ready will be disqualified and not be allowed in the arena. The decision of the Technical official or other officially appointed person is final. 18. As circumstances may predict judges will screen animals beforehand to be allowed to enter the arena. 19. It is the sole responsibility of the exhibitor to ensure that animals entered be at the holding pen in time for the relevant class. The exhibitor s handlers must, after judging, return the animal to the pen or if necessary, to the waiting pen for the championships. 20. No animal may be handled with a halter at any stage, irrespective of it being halter tame of not. This is applicable for the full duration of the animal being at the show venue. 21. Animals are measured and weighed 22. Animals are scanned. The norms still to be determined as soon as parameters had been set. 23. Organising committees to apply to the Society for a CHALLENGE well in advance. 24. The arena to be manned by two ring stewards as well one to let animals in and out of the arena.

Ek gaan nie my teelprogram wysig, omdat n Beoordelaar sy opinie uitspreek oor my bees of beeste nie. 2. Skoue moet deel wees van u promosie aksie en beslis nie u teelprogram nie. As u skoue gebruik om u beeste te bemark, sal u ook uself, asook u kudde n geweldige hupstoot gee. U sal ook sien hoe n positiewe invloed dit op die bemarking van u kudde het. U kan nie op die plaas sit en dink u het die beste kudde in die land, maar u is nie bereid om dit met ander kuddes en telers se diere te vergelyk nie. Skoue is dus n promosie-aksie ja, maar terselfdertyd ook n bemarkingsaksie van u kudde.

51 Skoureëls en veilings 51 A. Diere Kalf: Soek u skoukalf uit op vyf tot sewe maande. Die mooiste kalf sal die beste bly. Wanneer u speen: o Sit n halter aan. o Halter breek die kalf daagliks. o Na twee weke kan u die halter afhaal. Hy of sy sal nou mak bly. o Hou die bees in goeie kondisie, sodat hy of sy kan bly groei. Moet nooit jou diere oorvoer nie, so kan n teler sy diere baie skade aan doen. o Don t kill them with kindness Hoe moet jou skoubees of kalf lyk, sodat hy sal presteer in die skouring?: Hy of sy moet: Vierkantig op pote staan -- o Nie swak, lang of stywe kote hê nie. o Nie uitdraai of duiftonigheid wys nie. Uitdraai slegs 15 %. o Nie regop- of sekelhakke hê nie. Die bees moet breedte, bespiering en konstitusie hê en baie vleis dra. Die bulle moet manlik wees. Die vroulike diere moet vroulik en funksioneel wees. Die diere moet goeie konstitusie hê, goeie sprong van rib en rond vertoon. Platsydige beeste sonder sprong van rib het nie bespiering en konstitusie nie. Skoustring belangrike eienskappe: Vroulike diere: Vroulikheid. Skoon onderlyn. Goed gevormde en geplaasde spene. Wig na voor (vertoon swaarder na agter, van die kant gesien). Skoon plat nek met sagte vel, en vel plooitjies. Funksioneel en struktureel korrek wees. Goed ontwikkelde geslagdele. Manlike diere: Manlike kop. Breë bek, goed ontwikkelde oogbanke en breedte in kop. Nek moet bespiering wys. Goed gevormde skof wat reg op die voorarm geplaas is. Skoon skede met klein skede-opening. Goed ontwikkelde teelballe met ongeveer 6 tot 9 Bradex indeks. Bespiering oor hele liggaam vertoon, bevestig manlikheid. Gemaklike beweeglikheid, met goeie bene en voete (kloue). Breedte deurgaans, sitbene, heupbene, buite en binne dye. Funksioneel en struktureel korrek wees. Moet nooit beeste skou met: Diskriminerende foute soos byvoorbeeld: o Diere wat te groot of te klein is nie. o Geen voet- of beenfoute soos regop hakke, duiftonigheid, uitdraai of x-benigheid hê nie. o Groot of oneweredige speen plasing, SWAK uier vorm. o Foutiewe wig, swaar borsstuk, groot skof met nekspier ontwikkeling wat tekens toon van lae vrugbaarheid, asook klein geslagsdele by vroulike diere. Diskwalifikasies in die ring is: o Swak pigment wat op twee plekke van die liggaam vertoon. o Te klein of gedraaide teelballe. o Skewe bek of neusbeen. o Groot skedes, naelvel, groot skede opening of preputium, voorhuid wat bly uithang. Groepklasse word soos volg beoordeel: Eenvormigheid van groep. Funksionele doeltreffendheid en strukturele korrektheid van groep. Vermy n dier met diskriminerende foute in jou groep klasse. Die dier veroorsaak dat u groep nie struktureel en eenvormig vertoon nie. B. U stalle en promosie (dit is net so belangrik soos u diere): U grootste promosie is u diere: Hulle moet eenvormigheid vertoon. Dit is die vertoonvenster van die diere wat u teel en wat u kudde verteenwoordig. Altyd skoon wees. Moet skougereed wees en perfek aangebied word die dag met beoordeling.

52 52 Skoureëls en veilings Stalle: Moet altyd skoon en smaakvol wees. Aantreklik wees en niks moet rondlê nie. Behoorlike gereedskaprakke help. Voer netjies geberg. Werkers blyplek moet netjies en skoon wees. Werkers moet altyd perfek aangetrek wees. Tydens beoordeling moet u werkers geklee wees volgens die Brahman Genootskap se voorgeskrewe drag. Promosie by u stalle: Baniere (detail oor stoet), skoon, nuut met korrekte detail van u en u stoet. Detail oor bees help kopers baie soos : o Ouderdom van bees. o Gewig van bees o Breedplan/prestasiedata met n volledige stamboom. o U promosie materiaal soos pamflette, foto s en besoekersboek moet altyd uitgestal word. o Advertensie van veiling of detail van veilingsdiere moet beskikbaar wees. o Toekennings by DIE skou moet vertoon word. o Geen linte, toekennings van ander skoue word toegelaat om uit te stal nie. (Gebruik hier foto s van vorige skouwenners in n plakboek of ander media). C. Seleksie van skoudiere Hoekom kies ek n skoustring?: Om u kudde te bemark. Om u diere te bemark. Om uself te bemark met ander woorde u: o Teelbeleid. o Tipe diere wat u teel. o U bestuursvermoë. o U netheid, presiesheid, by u diere en stalle. o Vriendelikheid met publiek en telers wat u stalle besoek. o U kennis van u stoet, u diere, asook u diere se stambome is nodig om u produk te kan bemark. Hoe kies ek n skoustring en balans van n skoustring?: Probeer in elke klas deelneem. Moet nooit te veel beeste in een klas vertoon nie. Vergelyk u beeste teen mekaar. As een vers baie beter as die ander is, los die wat baie swakker is, eerder op die plaas. Hoe kies ek diere?: 1. Versprei diere in klasse (een per klas). 2. In Kampioenskappe: Probeer in alle Kampioenskappe deelneem: a. Kalf b. Intermediêr. c. Junior d. Senior 3. n Skoustring word oor n paar jaar gebou. a. Las onder by. b. Sny swak presteerders uit. 4. Neem groepklasse in ag met die keuse van u skoustring. 5. Vader nageslag van vier (advertensie van u bul). 6. Koei nageslag van twee (advertensie van u koeikudde). D. Afrigting en voorbereiding van u diere vir skoue. 1. Onthou dit is n onnatuurlike situasie, beeste gaan eers baklei. 2. Probeer dit regstel en vergemaklik met u bestuur. 3. Hoe vroeër u kan begin, hoe beter. Direk na speen is die beste tyd. 4. Bulle oor 15 maande moet neusringe aan hê en daarmee gelei word. 5. Metode: a. Sit eers net n halter aan. b. Na n week sit n tou aan die halter. c. Maak vas in stal met tou sodra die dier gewoond is aan a en b. d. Vasmaak dan losmaak en dan beloon met kos. e. Laat diere loop met tou of ketting. f. Oefen u diere elke dag as u kan. g. Werk met u hele skoustring daagliks. h. As oefen naboots skouring: i. Loop. ii. Trek dan een uit. iii. Vat aan dier, vryf diere. iv. Vergelyk met ander diere, twee, twee ens. v. Speel self beoordelaar. vi. Lei handleiers op. Swak handleiers is vir u stoet negatiewe reklame. E. Voeding van skoustring: Jou duurste kommoditeit. Moenie swak diere voer nie. Doseer alle diere, vir lewerslak en breë spektrum wurmmiddels, voor voer en ses weke later. Moet nooit n warm mengsels gebruik nie. Dit

As diere nie groei soos maats, soek fout o Of parasiete, o Of kos of voermetode, o Of dalk slegte voeromsetter. Onthou mielies maak vet. Langhooi bou spiere. Gooi min kos op n slag, vreet eers alles op, voor weer nuwe kos gee. Hou altyd u krippe skoon. Daar moet altyd skoon koue drinkwater vir u diere beskikbaar wees. Hanteer elke dier apart vir beste resultate. Dit werk om mengsel deur voedingkundige te laat uitwerk. Gebruik waar moontlik natuurlike mengsels (vismeel/sonneblom in plaas van ureum). Die rede daarvoor is dat dit die eerste keer was wat al 9 wenners in die vleisbees- afdeling met BRAHMANE geskou het. n Absolute ongelooflike gesig en verder ook iets waarop Noordwes Jeugskou as Provinsie baie trots is, want 8 van die wenners het uit die Noordwes Provinsie gekom. Vir enige Brahmanteler sal dit hoendervleis gee as hulle die wenners aankondig en elkeen van die 3 ouderdomsgroepe in die Vleisbeesafdeling staan met BRAHMANE. Die Brahmanras is so sterk bemark, dat daar 2 ander Provinsies nl Kwazulu Natal en Mpumalanga ook nou net met brahmane jeugskou wil doen. Daar word nou brahmane aan Mpumalanga verkoop om met die ras te teel en dit alles vir Jeugskou. Nampo Sietze Smit In die week 16 tot 20 Mei 2017 was Nampo aangebied. Dit was weereens n sukses vir die Brahman Beestelersgenootskap. Verskeie buitelandse besoekers het ons uitstalling besoek. Ons beesuitstalling was van hoogstaande gehalte. In die Wit afdeling het ons Willie Jacobs se besonderse koei VDM 14 3 gehad met n uitstekende bulkalf by haar, die uitstekende bul, ARC geteel en vertoon deur Arc-en-Ciel van mnr. Jose Maciel, Secunda is deur Johan Gouws vertoon, hy het ons ook ondersteun by die uitstalling. In die Rooi afdeling is die bekende bul BON 14 5 en die koei Bon 14 3 vertoon deur mnre. Andries Marx en Fanie van der Merwe, weereens n kwaliteit uitstalling. Albei groepe diere is tydens die Interras-evaluasie baie gunstig beoordeel. Baie dankie aan die twee telers wat hul diere beskikbaar gestel vir die belangrike uitstalling. Stephan Coetzee as Raadslid van die Noord-Wes Provinsie het ons bygestaan om die stalletjie funksioneel reg te kry. Dankie aan Karin, Sharon en Theresa wat die promosie artikels bemark het, dit was uitstekend gedoen.

93 Random/Lukraak 93 Parasietologiese Vereniging VAN SUID-AFRIKA Internasionale Kongres 2017 Om n akademiese kongres te kan bywoon en dan nog jou eie navorsing te kan deel met ander mense is van onskatbare waarde vir enige wetenskaplike. Ek was gelukkig genoeg gewees om saam met die Universiteit van die Vrystaat die 3de internasionale kongres wat deur die Parasietologiese Verening van Suid-Afrika aangebied is vanaf die 24-27ste September 2017, te kon bywoon in die Kruger Nasionale Park. Sprekers was parasitoloë van reg oor die wêreld wat fokus op die studie van parasiete van wild en vee. Ek was baie bevoorreg as jong wetenskaplike om n klein deel van my MSc navorsing met hulle te kon deel. Ek is ook baie gelukkig om te kan sê dat my navorsing goed ontvang was tydens die kongres en wil nou graag n kort abstrak van my praatjie met julle ook deel: n Vergelykende studie in ektoparasiet weerstand tussen suiwer Brahman (Bos Indicus) Linnaeus, Sussex (Bos Taurus) Linnaeus en Brahman x Sussex kruis beeste in die Vrystaat, Suid Afrika. 1 Marilie Esterhuyze, 1 Ellie van Dalen & 1 Sonja Brink, 1 Departement van Dierkunde en Entomologie, Universiteit van die Vrystaat, Bloemfontein 9301 Die fokus op volhoubare winsgewendheid op enige beesplaas val nie net op finansiële voordeel nie maar ook op die produksie van n kwaliteit produk as omgewingsbewuste produsent. Die kruisteling van Bos indicus en Bos taurus beeste was ondersoek as n manier om bosluis infestasie te beheer, deur spesifiek bosluis en myt weerstand tussen Brahman, Sussex en Brahman x Sussex kruis beeste te vergelyk. Die studie area was in die sentrale Vrystaat geleë, waar die bees rasse gevolg was oor verskillende kampe en plase waar hul gewei het om die ektoparasiet teenwoordigheid en ladings te monitor. Die resultate tussen die rasse was toe met mekaar vergelyk en ook gebruik om moontlike ektoparasiet weerstand eienskappe te identifiseer tussen die rasse (haar en vel eienskappe, gemiddelde ras gewig en gemiddelde ras liggaamstemperatuur). Bosluise is op n maandelikse basis versamel vanaf Maart 2014-Maart 2015 tydens inspeksies van diere en van die omgewing waar hul gewei het. Dit was gevind dat buiten die ras weerstand eienskappe, reënval en omgewingstemperatuur ook n groot invloed gehad het op die voorkoms en ladings van bosluise op die gasheer en in die omgewing. Hoër bosluis infestasies was gevind tydens die warmer en meer humiede maande van die jaar. Wanneer die rasse se totale infestasie getalle met mekaar vergelyk was is daar gevind dat die Sussex beeste die mees geaffekteer is deur die jaar. Beide rooi en grys Brahmane was die minste geaffekteer deur die verloop van die studie. Die Brahman x Sussex beeste het baie minder bosluise gehad as die Sussex beeste en kon vergelykbaar in dieselfde prestasie klas geplaas word as die Brahman beeste. Kruisteling kan dus effektief gebruik word as n manier om ektoparasiet infestasie te beheer gesamentlik met ander metodes. Ek bedank lede en personeel van die Brahman Beestelersgenootskap vir al julle ondersteuning deur my MSc studies! Ek hoop om nog van my navorsing met julle te deel vorentoe.

94 94 In Memoriam HULDEBLYK AAN JAN BOSMAN - Schalk Erlank Gun my die geleentheid om n kort huldeblyk aan Jan Bosman te doen, namens die Beoordelaars van die Brahman Beestelersgenootskap van Suid-Afrika. My pad as Beoordelaar het in 1989 met dié Jan Bosman gekruis, toe ons genooi was om n Junior beoordelaarskursus by te woon. Op hierdie geleentheid het dit baie gou duidelik geword dat Jan n besondere talent en gawe het om diere te beoordeel en bespreek. Jan het hierdie kursus met lof geslaag, soos altyd, en het hy baie gou opgang gemaak in die geledere as Beoordelaar. Jan is kort daarna dan ook met groot sukses bevorder tot Senior Beoordelaar. In 2008 is Jan bevorder tot n Rasbeoordelaar van die Genootskap. Nadat Jan by ons aangesluit het as Rasbeoordelaar, het hy en ek nou saamgewerk met ander Rasbeoordelaars, asook die Opleidingkomitee, om n nuwe Beoordelaarsbeleid te vestig. Dit was nie maklik om die nuwe rigting in te slaan nie, maar met Jan se insette het hy dit vir ons veel makliker gemaak. Jan het verskeie skoue oor die hele land met groot sukses beoordeel. Hy het begin by klein skoue toe groter skoue en verskeie Nasionale Kampioenskappe. Ek dink die hoogtepunt in Jan se lewe as Beoordelaar was, toe hy in 2014 gevra is om die Brahman Wêreldskou te beoordeel (Ek was bevoorreg om hierdie 3 dae van beoordeling saam met Jan die ringe te deel). Jan het verskeie talente binne die ring gehad, wat my altyd sal bybly: Jan het die Ras geken Jan was n eerlike en opregte Beoordelaar Jan was n nederige Beoordelaar Jan was n regverdige Beoordelaar As gevolg van hierde talente was Jan onwrikbaar in sy besluite binne die ring en was nie beïnvloedbaar van buite nie. Seker een van Jan se grootste gawes was dat hy geluister het wat mense sê en dan opgetree het. Jan het groot respek geniet by ander beesrasse. Ek kan verskeie geleenthede opnoem, maar een voorbeeld was die bekende Leehan Bonsmara van Johan en Coleen Jacobs. Drie jaar gelede het hulle Jan en myself genooi om hulle bulle te kom beoordeel. Daar het ek weer gesien hoe Jan se eerlikheid en opregtheid teenoor sy vriende en mede-boere uitgestaan het. Jan het vir die laaste agt jaar op die Opleidinskomitee van die Genootskap gedien. Ons werk was om jong beoordelaars op te lei en so ook te bevorder. Ek het soms baie keer teruggestaan en toegekyk hoe Jan met sy besondere talente met jongmense gewerk en leiding gegee het. Aan die einde van die opleidingsdae, het Jan hulle vriend geword. Ons (Jan en Ek) het vir die afgelope 22 jaar, elke jaar, hierdie opleidingsdae bygewoon, saamgery, saamgebly en saam huistoe gegaan. Hierdie jaar was Jan se plek leeg as gevolg van sy omstandighede. Onmiddellik het ons opgemerk dat daar n leemte was waar Jan se insette voorheen was. Ek wil ons Hemelse Vader bedank vir hierdie pad wat ek met Jan kon stap as LEIER, BEOORDELAAR en MY VRIEND... WANT HIER HET NOU NET EEN VAN DIE GROTES VERBYGESTAP.

96 96 Opleiding/Training TRAINING OPLEIDING - Corrie & Llewellyn Labuschagne - Training is one of the anchors of the industry and it is therefore of paramount importance to regard this part of our industry very seriously. Opleiding is een van die ankers van die bedryf en is dit gevolglik uiters noodsaaklik om hierdie gedeelte van ons bedryf met groot erns te vol hou. The Training Committe, in collaboraton with Breed Improvement, put in real efforts to uplift and inform our Members in order to improve the phenotype and genotype of our Breed. It is the responsibility of the Society to empower our Members, to offer them the opportunity to obtain the expertise to identify the strong points an shortfalls in their own herds and to be abe to improve that Started with a Beginners Judges Course on 20 January at Onderstepoort on the farm of Hans Terblanche and Lize-Mari de Klerk. 32 Candidates attended the course. Theo de Marilac, Willie Jacobs, Lize-Mari de Klerk and Willem Barnard Jnr are the four candidates who scored 80% or more and had been invited to attend the Junior Judges Course, held on 27 and 28 February A cattle handlers Course had also been presented by Sietze Smit on 20 January. 26 Handlers attended the course. From 26 to 28 February a Junior Judges Course had been presented at the Kroon Boma, just outside Kroonstad. Seventeen candidates attended this course. On 28 February, after the conclusion of the Junior Judges course, the Training Committee meeting was held, where the Judges policy, Standard of Excellence, as well as the allocation of Judges for 2018 were discussed and finalized. The Judges Conference was held on the 1st of March Die Opleidingskomitee, in samewerking met Rasverbetering wend daadwerklike pogings aan om ons telers en ons Ras op te hef om die fenoen genotipe van ons ras te bevorder. Dit is die Genootskap se verantwoordelikheid om ons telers te bemagtig, om hulle die geleentheid te gee om met kundigheid beter telers te word, asook om die sterk punte en leemtes in hulle eie kudde te identifiseer en te verbeter Het afgeskop met n Beoordelaars- Beginnerskursus op 20 Januarie by Onderstepoort op die fasiliteite van Hans Terblanche en Lise-Mari de Klerk. 32 Kandidate het die kursus bygewoon. Theo de Marilac, Willie Jacobs, Lise-Mari de Klerk en Willem Barnard (Jnr.) is die vier kandidate wat bo 80% gekry het en bevorder is om die Junior Beoordelaarskursus, wat 27 en 28 Februarie 2018 plaasgevind het, by te woon. Op 28 Februarie het daar n Opleidingsvergadering plaasvind, waartydens die beleid, Standaard van Voortreflikheid, asook die beoordelaarsplasings vir 2018 hanteer en gefinaliseer is. Die Beoordelaarskonferensie het op

97 Opleiding/Training 97 On the 19th of January, correspondence was sent to all Area Representatives to notify them what the Member training for 2018 will contain. During the last two years, Score Card training received a lot of attention, and the Training Committee thought it well to focus on re-introducing functions in aid of Members, available at the Office. We intend to pay more attention to the following aspects during our Training sessions in 2018/2019: Methods for submission of birth notifications Submission of performance information Transfers Fertility requirements for females B-Branding Calf identification Interpretation of Breedplan EBVs What is the meaning and importance of Days to Calving We will spend some time on Carcase values And the use of the Mating Predictor in herds. We will touch the Score Card again briefly if there is a need. However, it had been discussed thoroughly during the past two years. Breed Improvement and its activities will also be discussed. We would like to pay more attention to the submission of mating data (for Days to Calving), the submission of accurate performance data, the set-up of contemporary groups and the application of Breedplan performance principles in your herd. During the last Council Meeting these aspects of 1 Maart 2018 plaasgevind. Op 19 Januarie is daar n skrywe aan alle Streekverteenwoordigers gestuur om aan hulle deur te gee wat die Telersopleiding vir 2018 gaan behels. Daar is die afgelope twee jaar baie aandag gegee aan veral Keurkaartopleiding en het die Opleidingskomitee dit goedgedink om vir 2018/2019 meer te fokus op funksies wat as hulpmiddel vir die teler by die Genootskap beskikbaar is. Ons beplanning is om gedurende 2018/2019 meer aandag te gee aan die volgende aspekte tydens ons Opleidingsessies: Metodes vir die aanmelding van geboortes Indiening van prestasie inligting Oordragte Vrugbaarheidsvereistes vir vroulike diere B-Brand Kalf Identifikasie Interpretasie van Breedplan BTWs Wat beteken Dae tot Kalwing en die belang daarvan Ons wil ook aandag gee aan Karkas waardes En die gebruik van die Mating Predictor in die kuddes. Ons sal weer kortliks raak aan die Keurkaart waar daar behoeftes daarvoor is. Dit is egter baie volledig die afgelope twee jaar hanteer. Rasverbetering en wat huidig uitgevoer word in die Rasverbeteringskomitee, word ook bespreek. Ons gee baie aandag aan die indiening van paringsdata Opleidingsdag Onderstepoort

BOEREDAG Ellisras - 3 Maart Willem Barnard - n Suksesvolle Boeredag is gehou op 3 Maart 2018 by Don Emslie, Ellisras. Die fokus was op die kommersiële boere en Don het dit reggekry om 45 plaaslike boere te betrek. Die boere was baie opgewonde en positief oor die Brahmane se strategie en planne. Ongeveer 21 telers het die dag bygewoon. Onderwerpe en sprekers soos volg: Sietze Smit: Die noodsaaklikheid van Rasverbetering, Prestasietoetsing en Wenke vir rekordhouding Willem Barnard: Onderwerp terugvoering vanaf Raadsvergadering. Limpopo beplanning en strategie vir Skoue, veilings, opleiding en deelname aan Nasionale skou. Telers het aandagtig geluister na: Klubsake bv. funksionaliteit van klubs, Grondwet en Telersbesoeke beplan vir Dr JG Nel van Cipla: Praat oor KI en Sinchorinisasie. Praktiese opleiding en keuring van diere is ook toegepas. PROMOTION COURSE: Mazabuka Zambia This course was held in Mazabuka Zambia on the farm of Mr Chucky Cantley. It was a Brahman Promotion course and 60 people attended. Mr Cantley has joined the SA Brahman Breeders Society and at the same time his whole herd was inspected. The field day was well attended by members of all breeds from all over Zambia. The Minister of the Dept. of Agriculture attended as well as Mrs Coventry, a Brahman breeder, aged 92. Brahman is very popular in Zambia and the potential to grow is there. Thanks to Chucky and Regan Cantley for hosting this day. Mr Wayne Porter held the field day.

Sodoende kan ons die markaandeel verbeter en n volhoubare besigheid vir alle betrokkenes verseker. Om die droom te kan bereik moet ons: Ons bestaande telers oplei en toerus om diere te teel wat aan alle verwagtinge van die mark voldoen. Ons telers ondersteun en toerus om seker te maak dat hulle by die veranderende verwagtinge van die mark bly deur deel te neem aan prestasietoetsing, genetiese verbetering van die ras om sodoende internasionaal kompeterend te bly. Die mark so te stimuleer deur innoverende denke dat voornemende stoettelers die Brahmanbedryf as die eerste en enigste opsie sal oorweeg. Om telers te ondersteun en toe te rus met die nodige kundigheid om n volhoubare, winsgewende en voortgesette boerdery te vestig. Gesonde, kompeterende, etiese besigheidspraktyk te vestig om sodoende die volhoubaarheid van die Brahmanbedryf te verseker. Seker te maak dat ons deur goeie onderlinge ondersteuning genetika en hulpbronne vir mede-telers in Limpopo beskibaar stel, om seker te maak dat ons die voorlopers in die bedryf is wat betref die verskaffing van nuwe genetika en teelmateriaal vir die groter bedryf, Verseker dat daar opvolgbeplanning in kudde is om die verwaarlosing en verliese van kuddes waar telers nie meer wil voortgaan nie, te beperk en uit te skakel. Sake wat aangespreek moet word om aan die verwagting te voldoen: 1. Rasverbetering Ons moet elke teler oortuig, motiveer, oplei en toerus om deel te neem aan prestasietoetsing en die nodige hulp verleen om dit te kan doen. Ons moet telers oortuig om alle onder-standaard diere uit die stoetkudde te skuif sodat daar net met die beste diere geteel word. Dit is die enigste manier waarop ons die nasionale Brahmankudde se kwaliteit sal kan verbeter. Verbeter kuddes deur telers by te staan, met toevoeging van nuwe genetika tot hulle kuddes, deur die beskikbaarstelling van semen teen bekostigbare tarief. Maak seker en rus elke teler toe sodat almal die proses van Ras- en Kuddeverbetering verstaan en kan toepas.

101 Streeksverslag Opleiding Ons poog om ons telers te oorreed om ten minste twee formele tegniese opleidingsessies gedurende die jaar by te woon om hulleself toe te rus om hulle kuddes te verbeter ten opsigte van: B-Brand Keuring Prestasietoetsing en genomiese bevordering van die kudde Seleksie en keuring van eie diere Administrasie en rekordhoudig Verder beplan ons ten minste drie telersbesoeke gedurende die jaar om groter blootstelling aan ander kuddes te gee, om sodoende te kan waarneem wat ander telers doen. Ons probeer ook ons telers te inspireer en motiveer om buite-werkswinkels en seminare by te woon, sodat ons toegerus kan word om kuddes meer effektief en ekonomies te bedryf. Dié sessies en opleiding kan die volgende insluit: Bestuur van gesondheidsprogramme Bestuur van voedings- en weidingsprogramme Bestuur van bemarkingsplanne en promosie wat insluit die afronding en bemarking van diere. Verder is dit ook van uiterste belang om telers op te lei en toe te rus om die ras-eienskappe van die Brahman te ken en te verstaan, om sodoende voornemende kopers aan te moedig en te oortuig om in Brahmane te belê. Telers word ook aangemoedig om streeks- en plaaswerkswinkels vir nie-brahmantelers aan te bied om plaaslike en kommersiële boere aan Brahmane bekend te stel. Dit is van uiterste belang om mentorskappe vir nuwe telers te bewerkstellig om seker te maak dat daar n transfer of skills plaasvind. Dit sal verseker dat nuwe telers goed toegerus word vir die uitdagings in die bedryf. Dit sal ook verhoed dat nuwe telers belangstelling verloor indien hulle nie aanvanklik sukses behaal nie. 3. Promosie Brahmane kan alleenlik bevorder word as ons die nodige promosie en bekendstellling van die Ras doen. Om die bekendstelling en bewusmaking te kan bewerkstellig moet ons sekere aksies in plek sit en laat gebeur en dit is onder andere die volgende: 3.1 Skoue Ons probeer telers motiveer om aan skoue deel te neem om sodoende hulle diere te meet aan die standaarde van die res (wat jy nie kan meet nie kan jy nie bestuur nie). Die interaksie bevorder ook die onderlinge verhoudinge tussen telers en help ook met eie ontwikkeling. Verder probeer ons ook om: Nuwe telers te ondersteun met hulp en leiding vir skoue. Onderlinge benutting van hulpbronne (transport, arbeid ens.) om skoue meer ekonomies te maak. Promovering en bekendstelling van skouuitslae op alle moontlike platforms om n algemene bewusmaking te bewerkstelling. 3.2 Uitstallings Ons doen verder n beroep op alle telers om van elke moontlike geleentheid gebruik te maak om die ras en hulle kuddes uit te stal en te vertoon. (Veilings, Boeredae, Werkswinkels ens.) 3.3 Advertensies Ons probeer om sover as moontlik gebruik te maak van elke moontlike advertensiegeleentheid om ons kudde en die Brahmanras te bevorder ( No show - No tell - No sell ) en dit sluit in: (a) (b) Betrokkenheid by die Bylaag, Joernaal en ander gedrukte media om te wys jy is in die bedryf. Die gebruik van digitale bemarking om n boodskap vinnig uit te kry. Facebook, WhatsApp, Web ens. Die gebruik van sosiale media verseker n bewusmaking onder die algemene publiek, wat ook belangrik is. 4. Visuele bemarking Padborde, kudde baniere, bakkieplakkers, advertensieborde ens.word ook aangemoedig. Verder doen ons n beroep op telers om ons Branded klerereeks te dra om hierdeur n bewusmakingsveldtog te bewerkstellig.

102 102 Streeksverslag 5. Bemarking en verkope Bemarking en verkope is die kern waaroor die bedryf gaan. Alles wat ons doen gaan op die einde van die dag om ons produk te verkoop en indien jy nie jou produk ekonomies kan produseer nie is dit nie volhoubaar nie. Ons strewe in Limpopo moet wees om nie sub- en onderstandaard diere te bemark nie, ongeag of dit op n veiling of privaat van die hand gesit word. Ons strewe moet wees om effektiewe bemarkingskanale te skep deur bemarkingsvennote waar ons diere teen die bes moontlke pryse verkoop kan word. Bestaande bemarkingskanale wat ons in stand moet hou en onderlinge ondersteuning moet gee, sluit in: Big 50 Classic Versveiling moet voortgaan en nog verder uitbrei. Top North Bulveiling - moet voortgaan en moet strewe om kwaliteit verder te verbeter. Limpopo Veemark Brahman Aanteelveiling - moet voortgaan om die behoefte vir stoet en kommersiële Brahmane in die mark aan te spreek. Limpopo telers moet diere produseer wat in aanvraag is om sodoende ons markaandeel in Limpopo te verseker en verbeter. Die mens Kom ons ondersteun mekaar om in harmonie te kan teel en ons kuddes te verbeter. Kom ons gun mekaar sukses en kom ons skep n gesonde, kompeterende gees om die Brahmanbedryf te bevorder. 110 110 Rasverbetering/Breed improvement BREED THOUGHTS FOR 2018 Why are we stud breeders and what is our purpose? Today s economy does not favour stud breeders. However, the beef industry cannot very well function without them. The reason for that is because stud breeders are the source of genetic material to the commercial sector. We are past the time when a stud breeder can sell an animal to his commercial client with only visual information to offer. Or to sell animals to a feedlot based on Let s see how much they grow.

111 Rasverbetering/Breed improvement 111 IMPROVEMENT Brahman Breed Improvement has two goals to learn more about the shortcomings of our Breed and with this knowledge, to correct them. We aim to supply you as stud breeders with information to improve your product to your clients. How can we achieve these goals? Submit correct and accurate information. When you joined the Society, you committed to the submission of information. The Society is the custodian of the Master Database for SA Brahman, already containing more than animal records. If we record incorrect information, the ripple-effect of the mistake will take at least four generations to be rendered harmless. The Society is currently involved in a few projects: Beef Genomics Project (BGP) Aim To produce Genomic Enhanced Breeding Values (GEBVs) for traits which directly contribute to the productive cattle breeding industry, and specifically the Brahman breed.

112 112 Rasverbetering/Breed improvement Background The BGP is open to all beef breeds in Southern Africa, and South African and Namibian Brahman Societies are combining efforts to work towards achieving its goal. The primary goal of this project is to establish a reference population for Southern African Brahman, to serve as a benchmark for the breed. The BGP will focus on difficult- and/ or expensive-to-measure traits such as female fertility traits, maternal traits, feed efficiency and carcass traits. A data bank consisting of two components will be established - one for the management and storage of the phenotypical data and one for the genotypical data. Research stemming from the data will include the establishment and/or improvement of Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs), Genomic EBVs and Economic (Selection) Indices. These improved selection tools will hopefully bring about improved fertility, meat quality and feed efficiency in the breed. Almost at the end of the first 3-year cycle, the project has come a long way and a lot has been achieved. Three cycles of RFI tests had been done, resulting in the testing of 286 bulls. Almost half of that had been slaughtered to provide Carcase and Meat Quality information. The scanning of test bulls as well as onfarm scanning produced almost 600 records. Hair and semen samples submitted for genotyping to date amounts to almost 650. These samples are used in the BGP as well as a parallel study conducted by the ARC. This study will aid in the set-up of the Brahman Reference Population, which is a pre-requisite for the implementation of the Singlestep analysis (conducted by ABRI) to produce GEBVs. Additional to all the above information, the collection of phenotypical data proceeded as always. ARC Imputation Study (Conducted by Dr Linky Makgahlela) the aim of this study is the development of a cost-effective genotyping strategy for setting up the reference population using pedigree data. Second is the evaluation of the accuracy of genotype imputation for SNP marker panels of different densities. South African and Namibian Brahman information will be used to develop these strategies. In these three years, everyone involved learned a lot and the Society would like to thank the BGP participants, Society members and staff, project officials, scientists, etc. for their time, efforts and the sharing of their knowledge, to bring us this far. International Genetic Evaluation (IGE) This initiative is driven by the Brahman Breed Improvement Forum (BBIF) and its International counterpart, the IBBIF. After a number of test analyses and verification of results, our first International Genetic Evaluation was signed off by Australian ABRI and AGBU in March At this point, Days to Calving information was not analysed. However, in July 2017, Breedplan analysis model v6.2 had been implemented, and this time EBVs for Days to Calving as well as Docility were released for Brahman. The IGE will not become a production analysis yet. The BBIF is working on releasing results for this analysis. Tying in with the BGP, Brahman is trying to promote genotyping of as many animals as possible. Once we have a minimum number, data from Australia and Southern-Africa can be combined to calculate GEBVs for all involved countries. This will further aid the construction of a reference population, which is partly the purpose of the BGP. Our Request From the mentioned projects you can see that the construction of a Brahman reference population is paramount to the implementation of a number of steps towards the calculation of our new EBVs (Nett Feed and Meat Tenderness (Shear Force)) and GEBVs. GEBVs will allow the breeder to do more accurate selection of suitable breeding animals at a younger age. A strong Brand causes people to want to be associated with you. We, as Brahman people, strive to satisfy these expectations. Our product is cattle, but our business is people and therefore we do everything in our power to keep our clients happy. Expansion and development of your company through promotion of your product and people, establish trust and ensure sustainability of your business. The Brahman Cattle Breeders Society, under the guidance of it s Council, and supported by its Members, succeed in expanding and improving our Breed. With continuous new initiatives and innovative thinking, Council tries to create competitive, sustainable and long-term security for our Members in order to protect our multimillion-rand industry. The Brahman industry does not exist solely of the Council and Staff, but also other role-players like our service providers, sponsors, academics, media partners and of course our Members whom, through their involvement in Shows, Exhibitions, Farmers Days, Workshops, Clubs, etc., ensure that there is activity. This ensures that the market share of the Brahman Breed increases annually. As it is, there are also some challenges that we need to be aware of, so we as Members have to be vigilant and ensure that we remain relevant in the market. These challenges are among others: The new generation producer whom is informed and setting high expectations, is not satisfied with just an ordinary animal. These producers understand performance recording and genomics. We as breeders have to satisfy these expectations. Other breeds entering certain niche markets in which investors see opportunity, may take away our business if we are not alert. Brahman is a strongly established breed and could up till now market itself readily enough, but we need to note that many cross-breeds had been bred from Brahman and these breeds grow rapidly. Die Brahman Beestelersgenootskap onder die leiding van die Brahman Raad gesteun deur sy telers kry dit reg om ons ras voortdurend uit te bou en te verbeter. Met voortdurende nuwe inisiatiewe en innoverende denke probeer die raad om kompeterende, volhoubare, langtermyn sekuriteit vir ons telers te skep om ons multimiljoenrand bedryf te beskerm. Die Brahmanbedryf bestaan nie net uit die Raad en personeel nie maar uit verskeie rolspelers soos ons diensverskaffers, borge, akademici, media-vennote en dan ons telers wat deur hulle betrokkenheid by Skoue, Uitstallings, Boeredae, Werkswinkles, klubs, ens. verseker dat daar aktiewe deelname is en hierdeur verseker ons dat die markaandeel van die Brahmanras jaarliks toeneem. Ons het uit die aard van die saak ook sekere uitdagings waar ons kennis van moet neem en dus moet ons as telers almal waaksaam wees en seker maak dat ons relevant in die mark bly. Die uitdagings is onder andere: Die nuwe generasie boer wat ingelig is en hoë verwagtinge stel, is nie meer tevrede met net n gewone bees nie. Die boere verstaan prestasietoetsing en Genomika en ons as telers moet aan die verwagtinge van die mark voldoen. Ander rasse wat sekere nis-markte betree en waarin beleggers geleenthede sien kan van ons besigheid wegneem as ons nie waaksaam is nie. Die Brahman is n sterk ras en het hom tot hede redelik self bemark maar ons moet kennis neem dat daar baie ander rasse uit die Brahman geteel is en die rasse groei sterk en ons moet voortdurend vernuwe en die ras verbeter om met die ontwikkeling by te bly. Die meeste boere ontvang voorligting en rus hulself toe om die regte keuse te maak by die uitsoek van teelbulle.

Most farmers receive extension services and equip themselves to make the right decisions with the selection of breeding sires. Inspection and selection is of utmost importance to ensure that the so-called substandard animals are removed from the Breed. As usual, we are planning several promotional actions for 2018 and would like to highlight a few. JOURNAL AND SUPPLEMENT We intend to release two journals this year, viz.: March/April 2018 Information regarding the activities during this year December 2018 Feedback regarding the activities of the past Year. SUPPLEMENT 5 Our next supplement will be released in September and you will again have the opportunity to advertise your herd in this edition. The general feedback has been that breeders received tremendous positive reaction from the market from advertisements in previous supplements. It is very important to compete in Interbreed competitions to compare ourselves against other breeds. We call on you as breeders and organizers to ensure that there will be Interbreed competitions. Ons beplan soos gewoonlik weer verskeie promosieaksies vir 2018 en ek lig graag n paar aan u uit. JOERNAAL EN BYLAAG One beplan om die jaar 2 joernale uit te gee nl: Maart/April Inligtingsjoernaal oor die jaar se aktiwiteite Desember Terugvoer Joernaal oor die gebeure van die afgelope jaar BYLAAG 5 Ons volgende bylaag sal gedurende September verskyn en daar sal weer geleentheid vir u wees om u kudde in die Bylaag te adverteer. Die algemene terugvoer is dat die telers baie positiewe reaksie uit die mark gekry het met al die vorige bylaes. Ander beplande reklame-aksie vir die jaar is gedrukte media advertensies vir die volgende publikasies. B-BRAND Inspection of bulls for B-branding is going well. Breed Improvement calls on breeders, whom have not done it yet, to request an inspection visit. More information regarding this is available on our Web. Our advertising strategy is focused on B-brand and we are aware that the general public notice Brahman s leading role here. BRAHMAN WEB PAGE Our web page is critically important to us and therefore we promote it strongly, since we know that our Breeders really use it. It has also been made Mobile-friendly for the smart-phone user. PROMOTIONAL GIFTS We are very motivated to market Brahman via our promotional items. Our Branded clothing range has become so popular that we decided to create an online purchase facility to ease the process. Via this facility we can also introduce these items to the broader public. See the Web page for our online shop. Promotional items will also be available at certain events, viz. Nampo, Bos-Blanco Sale and Brahman Expo. BRANDING AND BANNERS Banners and sign-flags had been made for each region and are available for use at shows, farmers days, etc. PRESIDENTS DINNER The Presidents Dinner will always be the highlight of the year. During this event we like to recognise the achievements of our members during the year. Here they have the opportunity to socialize and get to know each other. The 2018 Presidents Dinner will be hosted in Natal and will co-inside with the Annual General Meeting, 29 September wat dit nog nie gedoen het nie om te reël vir die nodige keuring. Meer inligting hieroor is op ons webblad beskikbaar. Ons hele advertensieveldtog is gefokus op B-Brand en ons weet dat die algemene publiek kennis neem van die Brahmane se leidende rol wat hulle ook hier speel. WEBLAD Ons webblad is vir ons krities belangrik en daarom promoveer ons, ons webblad baie sterk en weet ons dat ons telers regtig ons webblad besoek en gebruik. Ons webblad is ook Mobile vriendelik gemaak wat vir die slimfoon gebruiker dit gemakliker maak. PROMOSIE GESKENKE Ons het n groot dryf om ons Brahman deur ons promosie items te bemark. Ons BRANDED klerereeks raak so gewild dat ons ook besluit het om n aanlyn koopfasiliteit te skep wat die aankoop van die items makliker gaan maak. Hierdeur sal ons ook die items vir die algemene publiek beskikbaar kan stel. Sien die webblad vir die direkte aanlynwinkel. Promosie-items sal ook tydens sekere aktiwiteite beskikbaar wees nl: Nampo, Bos Blanco veiling en Expo. Die Presidentsdinee vir 2018 sal die jaar in Natal gehou word en dit val saam met die Algemene Jaarvergadering 29 September AFSLUITING Promosie is die vertoonvenster van ons bedryf en dit is nie net ons beeste en ons promosie-aksies wat ons ras bemark nie, maar ons mense is ons grootste advertensie.
