1 Llama and Alpaca Animals The educational 4-H lama and alpaca program and related activities (such as workshops and tours) provide youth with a fun and hands-on learning experience which develops both project subject skills (such as nutrition, housing, and health care) and life skills (such as responsibility, decision-making, nurturing, and communications). (web: ) Requirements: Exhibitors may make and exhibit a poster on some aspect of Llamas and Alpacas in order to complete the llama/alpaca project OR in addition to showing a Llama or Alpaca. The poster must comply with poster rules. LEVELS: Beginner Grades 3-5 Intermediate Grades 6-8 Advanced Grades 9-12 Grade level reflects the grade attended during the current school year. Complete the Llama and Alpaca Record Book. Show in Showmanship and at least one other performance class. Halter classes are encouraged, but optional. GENERAL RULES: All project requirements must be fulfilled in order to complete the llama and alpaca project and to show at the 4-H Fair. Exhibiting a llama and alpaca at the fair is encouraged, but not mandatory in order to complete the project. Llama s and Alpaca s are eligible to be identified as Parke County Llama and Alpaca projects. Llama and Alpaca MUST be enrolled on-line by May 15 th. You will need 2 pictures-one of the head and one side view to complete the enrolment process. All meetings and workshops will be conducted by 4-H rules. The 4-H er will respect the dignity and personality of the llama or alpaca and treat it with gentle kindness. Animals should have adequate feed and water. Exhibitor to provide own feed and water containers and bedding. All 4-H ers are required to attend to all llama or alpaca needs as scheduled during the fair. Prior to the 4-H fair, attendance and involvement in the Set Up activities at the fairgrounds is highly recommended. At the 4-H Fair, attendance and involvement in the Tear Down and Clean Up activities at the fairgrounds is highly recommended. Animals are not released until stall and exhibit areas are cleaned and organized. Animals will not be released prior to check out time. For safety, shoes must be appropriate for the show ring. Open toed or open heeled shoes, sandals, and bare feet will disqualify the exhibitor. Show attire: Llama and Alpaca exhibitors are strongly urged to wear appropriate attire in the show ring: Performance classes allow casual dress and their club shirts. It is strongly suggested exhibitors not to wear tank tops, midriff tops, halter tops, baggy pants, extremely short shorts, or tops with spaghetti straps. The judges will use these guidelines as criteria for final placement. It is strongly suggested for Showmanship that exhibitors wear dress slacks or skirt, blouse or shirt with a collar, and dark shoes or boots. The show outfit may be accented with a colored vest or tie. No tennis shoes or jeans. The judge will use these guidelines or criteria for final placements. All Parke County rules apply in regards to leased llamas or alpacas.

2 Llamas and Alpacas owned by 4-H ers are required to enroll their animals by May 15 th. A 4-H member may lease their llama and alpaca. The lease must be turned into the Extension Office. Each 4-H Llama and Alpaca may only be shown by the 4-H member that enrolled that animal. If a 4-H member owns their own llama or alpaca and selects to complete the llama and alpaca project requirements without participating in the llama and alpaca project s regularly scheduled workshops, the 4-H member is required to meet all project requirements to be eligible to exhibit at the fair. It is up to the member to find out any workshop information needed to complete the project and record book. An exhibitor may not take exception to the decision of an official/ and or judge in an unprofessional manner. Nor shall an exhibitor or person representing the exhibitor indulge in unbecoming conduct towards any other 4-H member, leader, volunteer or parent. Project and record sheets must be signed by a Llama and Alpaca Project Leader as well as the 4-H Club Leader for the project to be considered completed. Record Books must be turned in when unloading animals at the fair. For the safety of all exhibitors and orderly conduct in the show ring, a 4-H er may not show an intact male that is 24 months of age or older as of the day of the show. A female or gelding of any age may be shown. The judge reserves the right to move llamas/alpacas into different wool classes without penalty to the exhibitor. The project leaders also reserve the right to dismiss any llama or alpaca from the fairgrounds which are deemed unsafe to others as a result of health or behavioral reasons. If this action is considered necessary, the project leaders will inform the 4-H Extension Educator in order to receive approval from the 4-H Council. Refer to the Parke County 4-H Program Policies for 4-H Animal Grooming Guidelines. All animals exhibited at the 4-H Fair must meet Board of Animal Health (BOAH) requirements. Requirements are updated annually and available at the Parke County Extension Office. Currently, there are no special health requirements, health certificates or health papers required even at our state level. However, unhealthy animals will not be allowed to show. They will be sent home. 4-H LLAMA AND ALPACA SHOW CLASS DESCRIPTIONS AND GUIDELINES: SHOWMANSHIP: Showmanship Class: Judged on how well the 4-H er reacts with the llama or alpaca and how well the llama or alpaca is trained as it is presented at its best advantage to the judge. Exhibitor must demonstrate basic skills in presenting the animal to the judge, grooming and following directions. Control of the llama or alpaca s conformation is not considered. The handler s attire should be neat, clean and appropriate for the class. A good showman is polite and courteous to other exhibitors, displays good sportsmanship and pays attention to both the animal and to the judge at all times. Showmanship Guidelines: (Llamas and Alpacas will show together in these classes). 4-H members who complete in the Parke County Fair Showmanship Classes must show their own animal that was exhibited by them in one of the Llama and Alpaca performance or halter classes. Junior Showmanship all 4-H exhibitors in the 3 rd, 4 th or 5 th grade on January 1 of the current year are eligible. Once an exhibitor is the junior showmanship winner, he/she is only eligible to complete in intermediate or senior showmanship in future years.

3 Intermediate Showmanship all 4-H exhibitors in the 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grade on January 1 of the current year are eligible. Once an exhibitor is the junior showmanship winner, he/she is only eligible to complete senior showmanship in future years. Senior Showmanship all 4-H exhibitors in the 9 th grade or above on January 1 of the current year are eligible, including intermediate winners and previous senior showmanship winners. Grand Champion Showman will be selected from present junior, intermediate and senior winners. PERFORMANCE CLASSES (LLAMAS AND ALPACAS WILL SHOW TOGETHER IN THESE CLASSES) - 4-H ers are required to participate in at least one performance class. OBSTACLE CLASS: Member and animal are judged on their ability to negotiate obstacles. Five specific obstacles are required: jump, change of pace, backing, bridge/ramp, maneuvering. This class demonstrates the animals ability and willingness to negotiate any obstacle and situation that relates to the animal s participation in community events such as parades or festivals, visit to schools, nursing homes, hospitals, etc. This competition also examines the animal s trust in its handler, while using its own intelligence to evaluate tackling each obstacle. PACK: Member and animal are judged on their ability to negotiate obstacles and perform activities in back country while carrying a pack. Six specific obstacles are required: backing, bridge/ramp, jump, flexibility and maneuvering, inspecting food, manageability with pack. Llamas and Alpacas under 18 months of age will wear a training pack or pad with two cinches, and filled panniers. Entire system must weigh no more than 8 pounds. Llamas and Alpacas 18 months and older will wear a complete pack with 2 cinches and panniers filled out with light weight material. Entire system must weight no more than 25 pounds. Juniors will not remove packs. COSTUME CLASS: The exhibitor decides on a theme and dresses him/herself and the Llama or Alpaca to illustrate the chosen theme. The Llama or Alpaca can be presented with music or written script. The Llama must be taught to accept the costume. Class placement will be passed on originality, creativeness and the coverage of the costume on sensitive areas of the animals such as its head, back, legs, ears, etc. Member and animal are judged on originality, difficulty in training animal to accept and exhibit costume, and suitability to theme of the exhibitor s choice. At check in, exhibitors must submit a narrative to be read during their performance. Narratives to list the name of the exhibitor and the name of the Llama or Alpaca and description of what the costume represents. HALTER CLASSES Ages as of the day of the Show: a. Juvenile 5 months through 12 months b. Yearling 13 months through 24 months c. 2 Year Old 25 months through 36 months d. Adult 37 months and older Note: Intact males cannot be shown if older than 24 months on the date of the show. Geldings can be shown at any age and above 24 months of age. WOOL DESCRIPTOINS: a. Suri both in Llamas and Alpacas Lustrous, cool hand, lack of crimp and minimal loft, locked fiver that drapes over the Llama or Alpaca s body. b. Huacaya Alpacas a fluffier fiber with fine crimp in the wool. c. Light-minimal body wool - short neck wool and smooth legs. d. Medium moderate to long body wool, minimal to moderate neck wool, smooth to moderate leg wool. e. Heavy abundant body and neck wool with minimal to abundant leg wool. (leg wool at least to knee and hock).

4 OTHER DESCRIPTIONS: a. Miniature Llamas animals must be 38 inches or less at the withers to enter class. Measurements made at check in. b. Produce Dam two offspring by the same dam, either sex, and produce may represent the same sire. Produce must be shown in appropriate halter class. One entry per dam. c. Get of Sire three offspring by the same sire, either sex, by at least two different dams. All Get must be shown in appropriate halter class. One entry per sire.
