2 Cattlemen, What a difference a year makes! Cattle prices are at record levels and feed costs are declining, good to be on this side of the cattle cycle. As we all know however the good times are much shorter than the tough times. Input costs continue to be at record levels and probably wonít come down much more. With that being said producers are trying to rebuild their herds and breeding females are demanding record prices. This is a great time to sharpen our management skills and maximize production of our livestock and we feel Simmental as a breed is leading the way to maximize production per cow or per acre of grass. One of the greatest attributes of Simmental is a highly fertile female that has adequate milk, calves unassisted, and is easy to handle. The Simmental bulls produce cattle the feedlots want with their ability to gain red muscle and still grade choice and hang a heavy carcass. Our herd, for the 5th straight year, has been recognized with a Performance Advocate award and a score of 500. Simply put this award is given for producers who turn in data for every cow in their herd for birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight and yearling hip height. It takes a great deal of discipline and effort to make sure all records are recorded and up to date and Stavick Simmental is very proud to be one of the 41 who qualified for spring 2013 enrollment in the country. It also gives you, our customers, the confidence you need, when selecting your next herd bull, that numbers are real and not weighted to be an advantage to some sire groups or individual. The bulls are developed on a complete TMR high roughage ration. The ration consists primarily of prairie hay, corn silage, alfalfa and corn along with a dense protein pellet. They are developed with a target Average Daily Gain () of 3.65 lbs. Fast enough to observe bulls that excel in feed conversion and eliminate those that donít and slow enough to allow maximum skeletal growth, foot and testicular development. Again I will emphasize a core belief of ours that a customer should never have to worry about foot problems because of overfeeding. As far as herd health goes all cows are actively tested for Johnes. We are on a modified live vaccination protocol utilizing Bovishield, Somubac, Ultra bac and Enforce 3. All bulls will be current on worming and be poured within 30 days of sale. All bulls will be semen tested prior to the sale and delivered the end of March. If you should choose to take your bull home day of the sale we will credit you $100 per bull. A couple quick notes. Notice we have included a Calving ease score from 1 to 5 stars. This is simply an opinion on what we feel each bulls ability to calve are based on past experience of dam, calf birth weight and shape of the calf at birth. We recommend only bulls with 5 ***** to be used on heifers and bulls with 1 * to be used on mature cows. Again this in only our recommendation and your management practices and experience must be considered. 4 REFERENCE SIRES STF/RP Savvy THSF Freedom MCM Top Grade 018X Remington Lock n Load Feeding of your new yearling bull is one of the most important steps in the continued maturity process. If you choose to take your bull home it is vital to maintain proper nutritional levels for proper semen production, skeletal development and foot and leg structure. From the day you get him home until turnout, the bull must be in a positive energy balance for increasing the odds of years of continued use. Basic needs are clean fresh water, free choice mineral, adequate dry bedding and wind protection. On the nutritional end yearling bulls should continue to receive at least 14% of ration in protein and a 48 megacal ration. Typically free choice alfalfa hay and 8-10 lbs of corn will hit this. After breeding season, separate yearlings and start feeding this type of ration to make sure they are in adequate body condition before the chill of winter hits. Keep yearling and 2 year olds separate from the older bulls. I realize this is difficult but with the cost of investing in new animals every effort must be taken to minimize stress and injury. 2

Those are impressive ratios considering her age, watch for her influence in the coming years! In using, the difference between two sires represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have of +10 and 5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in firstcalf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentileranking chart is required to determine where a bull s rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an allpurpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a+50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000).
