2 A Welcome from the Headmaster On behalf of everyone at Oakham School it is my pleasure to welcome you to what I am sure will be an excellent day of exciting rugby sevens. The shorter version of the game has always played an important part in many schools sporting calendars for the Lent term and today s tournament is certainly one of our highlights of the spring months. The game now plays an ever important role in the development of the game of rugby football across the world with the IRB World Sevens Series. The seven-a-side game enables the smaller rugby playing nations to compete with those sides who would otherwise dominate them in the larger version of the game. Watching Fiji, Samoa and, in recent years, Kenya, has been an exhilarating experience for spectators around the world - it is not surprising that rugby sevens will appear in the 2016 Olympics. Oakham may be not be part of the world series but I hope that the entertainment is just as exhilarating today and that we all leave at the end of the day with some exciting memories of superb side steps, try saving tackles and the camaraderie that goes with any inter- school rugby competition. 9 SEVENS RUGBY TOURNAMENT RULES Current RFU rules apply as for the U16 and U18 versions of the game. General Rule The Tournament will be conducted entirely under the control of The Tournament Referee (Mr. I.R Smith) who will adjudicate on all matters where necessary. Players will be U16 or U18 on September 1st of the year preceding the festival. Competition Rules 1. No maximum squad size. 2. The Group Winners of the pool rounds and the league competition will be determined by the most number of wins. If a tie, the result will be decided by: a. the winner between the two teams in their pool match, and if still tied b. the highest number of tries scored, and if still tied c. the highest number of points scored and, if still tied d. the lowest number of points against and, if still tied e. the toss of a coin Playing Rules 3. Playing time will not usually exceed 42 minutes (3 games) in any two-hour period. No side shall be required to play more than 90 minutes in one day 4. Games will be played under the IRB Laws, U19 variations, Each item of protective clothing, padding or otherwise, must conform to IRB Laws 5. Each game shall be played for 7 minutes each way, including the final. No extra time will be played in the pool rounds of any Tournament and matches will be left drawn 6. In the knock-out rounds if, at the end of normal time, neither side has won, captains will toss for the right to kick off or choice of ends and play will continue in periods of five minutes, changing ends after each period without further interval with the first side to score being declared the winner. 7. In any game, players can be nominated as replacements/substitutions. Rolling substitutions can be made with the referee s permission and be made only when there is a stoppage or the ball is out of play 8. The use of Temporary Suspension (Sin Bin) for 2 minutes will be in force.

10 9. U16/U18 Format The U16 & U18 competitions will initially be played in groups on a league basis. Each team will play each of the other schools competing in their group. The subsequent session will consist of knockout matches in both PLATE and CUP events to determine the winners. 10. Length of matches Matches will be seven minutes each way at U.16 & U.18 level, with a minute for half time. Extra time will only be played where necessary to determine the winners in knockout phases 11. Scoring (a) Four points will be awarded for a win and two for a draw. (b) In knockout phases, should the sides be level at the end of full time, the teams will change ends and play either for five minutes or until one side scores (Golden Try rule). Extra five minute periods will be played as necessary. 12. Playing squad/substitutions. Teams are to consist of any seven players and there is no maximum squad size. Rolling substitutions is permitted when the ball is out of play or during a stoppage providing that the game is not unduly held up to do so. 13. Goal kicks/restarts All kicks at goal will be drop kicks. Kick offs after a try will be taken from half-way by the team that has just scored. During conversions all bar one of the non-kicking team may wait at the half way line. 14. Referees/staff Thank you to the Leicestershire Referees Society for supplying the referees. Each team should provide a touch judge for their matches, except in the final where they will be provided. Each school involved in a game must have a member of staff present to ensure their side is ready to start the game on time. They will be responsible for their team throughout the playing period.

12 Sevens is a great opportunity to develop the basic skills that will help you become a great rugby player. The speed, fitness and skills required make it an awesome game to be involved in as well as a great spectator sport. It does not seem that long ago that my Wharflands side was beating Chapmans and Haywoods on Farside on our way to being crowned Interhouse Sevens champions in 1995, refereed by Mr Mullinger. It still ranks up there as one of my greatest rugby achievements, closely followed by the Rugby World Cup Finals, of course. 16 First Aid Any injuries incurred during matches will be dealt with initially by coaching staff. Treatment and management of injuries will be in line with our First Aid Protocol. In an emergency, contact EVENT PARAMEDICS onsite First Aid Protocol Assessment of injury by coach. Subsequent possible courses of action. 48 hour Injury Protocol Any players sustaining minor injuries during matches should follow the bullet points below. Rest the injured area Ice regularly for 10 minute periods Keep the area raised when possible If symptoms persist seek medical advice Always keep coaches up to date
