1 Melbourne Adventure Volume 2, Issue 6 NEWSLETTER June 2006 Club News by The Editor... In the past month, Melbourne Adventure has been developing a name in a wider arena through the achievement of some of our athletes. Congratulations to Anna Pang, Jennifer Ryan and Keith Falconer who have all earned spots in the Australian Age Group team for the 2006 ITU world champs to be held in Lausanne. Continuing along with the theme of achievement, we would also like to pass along our congratulations to Del Lloyd and Kelly Linden who both have been accepted into the Dirt Road To London AIS program. 2 Competition Winner... Congratulations to Jo Chapman! She is the winner of May s Tridownunder Race Report and this is her race report for the Fat Tyres mtb race out at Officer. FTF Mtb Race One, Officer... A Lesson in What Not To Do By Jo Chapman Y'know, Mother's Day conjures up all sorts of pleasant images; breakfasts in bed, bunches of flowers, warm fluffy slippers and lunches in front of cosy log fires. However the mother I encountered in the drizzling rain, in the queue for the ladies toilet was more than happy to be there at the Officer Scout headquarters, to watch her son battle it out in the 'Mens Sport' Category of the FTF Round One Winter series race. Along with 94 other hopefuls, including Melbourne Adventure stalwarts Liam Delany (el capitane), Liz Mulconry, Marcel Andrewartha, my husband Philthy Barrett and I were making our return to the MTB discipline after a long spell in the cross country running and triathlon wilderness. Given how long it had been since I raced I was somewhat nervous about my debut, however it was a friendly bunch we encountered as we waited for our respective starts. Phil had opted for the 'Veterans' Category, somewhat naively thinking It might be easier than 'Sport B' - mistake number one! He didn't realise veterans were crazy hard core blokes who did FOUR laps rather than the semi-respectable two laps enjoyed by the boys in Sport B. Whoops, he'll know for next time! I lined up for 'Womens Sport' along with Liz, although in hindsight 'Spacko no skills scotty slow mo' category would have suited me better after rating my dismal performance. I have to say though, for the first 300 metres along the flat fire trail I was on fire. Had we continued along that trajectory I could have easily managed a higher placing. Soon enough, we plunged down onto the single track and I quickly relinquished my brief lead to the entire pack as I was not handling the peer group pressure on the downhill well at all. Negotiating my way around the course on lap one, I quickly realised mistake number two (I'm counting Phil and I collectively here as we arrived in one car) I should have done a practice lap. Each turn brought new and increasingly unpleasant surprises and my sheer nervousness caused a few ridiculous falls that were purely due to my own inhibitions. (This theme continues...) The course itself was muddy from the persistent drizzle and I guess the challenge for all riders was remaining clipped in around the course because unclipping, and putting your feet on the ground, meant no more easy clipping in again, as cleats and pedals then became choked with mud and debris. Naturally my feet were on the ground for most of the race. I unclipped downhill on the switchbacks because as a little fraidy cat, I felt more secure this way. I also refused to ride down any decline greater than about 6% degrees. Given that this applied to 90% of the course I was doing a helluva lot of running with my bike! I had the dreaded chain lock after switching into grannie gear far too late on inclines and had a couple of spectacular stationary falls (my specialty). I also somehow fell onto my chain and cassette, which has left an attractive cog-shaped wound on my right ankle. Despite this string of comedy like errors and lets face it, a complete lack of skill, I emerged from lap one to give it a go once more. I was completely covered in mud which helped to hide my identity at the back of the pack, in reality, I'd completely lost sight of the pack and had only managed to shake two competitors who were somewhere in the bush behind me. Incognito, and now much more relaxed riding on my own, I found the initial traumatic downhill a breeze. I had less chain locking as I could anticipate the course ahead and plan my gear shifts more carefully. I must say I can grind away uphill like a champion and I passed a few lads from 'Sport B' on a couple of the longer uphills, and was immediately humbled by 'expert/elite' men and women then passing me! The troublesome descents were still traumatising and I was forced to stop more frequently on lap two to let all the faster riders get past me. I never managed to clip in properly on both feet but managed to stay on the bike a bit more on lap two, consequently this lap was much quicker, despite my most painful spill where somehow I fell with my whole Melbourne Adventure 2

3 body weight with the bike on top, straight onto my right butt cheek. Needless to say it's still hurting. I managed one more embarrassing public failure to shift into lower gear on the last hill and narrowly missed falling off (again). I ran across the finish line with Liam and Phil cheering encouragingly. (Phil was there after reappraising the four lap option and deciding two was more than enough). All in all it was a terrible come back but has undoubtedly left me wanting more. The promise of the free bike tube prize for a top three placing from FTF is an irresistible lure, and I'm keen to practice my skills. Preferably in less public fashion, before my next race. In fact soon after the race there was talk that Simon Knowles is planning a mountain bike stills course for club members. Sounds like a pretty good idea to me! Hopefully my journey towards a fall-free experience will amuse, engage and possibly inspire other recreational mountain bikers in the club. Particularly other women, who like me, may believe they lack the skills, but really all they lack is race experience. Enjoy, until next time. Jo encourages the "Spirit Of SpOrtSmanShip" for this month's Competition. This competition is a bit different in that you nominate someone else to win the 1 pair of Ultimax TRIATHLETE ULTRA-LITE socks ($18.95) and a Headsweats SuperVisor ($32.95) prize from Tridownunder with a story of their unselfish sportsmanship. A possible example would be someone who sacrificed their own race aspirations to pace alongside you to help you finish. The top three stories will be published in the next MA newsletter. 6 Members Profiles cont... Long term goals: Not to let myself get old Worst Injury sustained: A massive blow to the ego, concussion and bruises which I pogoed off a jump in a XC mountain bike race at Beechworth. Oh, and a broken neck from kayaking, but that was just a chip. Why do you do it, all this training and racing? I am addicted to the endorphins. I also suffer from white line fever. Who inspires you? Lance Favourite Toy: My freeride mtb, but only when a chairlift is taking it back up to the top for me! How do you relax and take time out from training? By doing my PhD. What is your most memorable moment from training/racing? In 2000 I put together what was an almost perfect canoe slalom run in a World Cup in the USA. It was completely automatic and the whole two minutes felt like the most natural thing in the world. I could never do it again, but that feeling was incredible. What is the worst experience you have from training/racing? Missing out on the Australian Canoe Slalom team for two consecutive years. The massive disappointment eventually outweighed any motivation I had to keep training. That is the problem with not being a natural you have to work so hard to get there, and if you don t make it there aren t many rewards.. Why do you do it, all this training and racing? I only do it if I enjoy it. I am addicted to the buzz, and the fitter you are the more buzz you can get. You can go harder for longer, have more fun and your body is How do you balance your family & friends with work and training? Balance?? I have not really worked this bit out I just try to train with my family and friends when I am at work and call it my social life.. What pearls of wisdom do you have for new people getting into the sport? You wont regret it. Melbourne Adventure 6

7 Members Profiles cont... capable of so much more. I love being fit because it means I can do anything I want to. Who inspires you? Anyone who is enjoying what they are doing. The tougher they find it, the more inspirational it is. I also admire anyone who has the commitment to make it to the top because it doesn t matter how much ability you have, the only people who go fast are those who have the focus to be able to put the hard yards in. How do you relax and take time out from training? Training is relaxing! I just focus on skill sessions like downhill mountain biking, or snowboarding. They are very important skills How do you balance family & friends, work and training? I love to involve my friends in my training as much as I can, so a lot of my friends love to ride or paddle as well. Otherwise I just make sure that I cook them dinner once in a while, and they always seem to turn up! My family is all over the map, so I see them when they come to visit. What pearls of wisdom do you have for new people getting into the sport? Don t hesitate to get involved you are never going to be fit enough to start. Just sign up, and go and do it! I still think I am not fit enough to do races, but all you have to do is pay the entry fee and suddenly it seems possible.
