1 Number 15: July 2017 Supported by the AGN Racewalk Commission A voice for all walkers! New South African Racewalking record The 33rd Honvéd Cup held in Budapest, Hungary on 30th June provided two new national records in the 5000m track races. The Hungarian Viktória Madarász and the South African Lebogang Shange each broke their National record. Racewalking and your body Effect of β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate supplementation on muscle loss in older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis Hongmei Wu, Yang Xia, Jin Jiang, Huanmin Du, Xiaoyan Guo, Xing Liu, Chunlei Li, Guowei Huang, Kaijun Niu This is a short summary of a paper from Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics 61 (2015) Sarcopenia, or loss of muscle mass, is associated with aging, beginning as early as age 40. After 40, muscle mass declines at a rate of about 8% per decade until age 70, after which loss increases to a rate of ~15% per decade. Loss of muscle mass leads to a loss of muscle strength. Strategies that have been proposed to reduce muscle loss include exercise, nutritional supplements and hormone replacement. β- hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB) is a metabolite of the branchedchain amino acid leucine which has been investigated due to its potential role in improving muscle quality. Studies suggest that HMB treatment decreased muscle proteolysis and muscle damage and increased fat-free mass gain both in young and older adults. This study was a meta-analysis (study of studies). All the studies reported absolute changes in fat free mass or body lean mass and body fat. Supplementation of HMB alone or in combination with other compounds has a beneficial effect on muscle mass improvement: the meta-analysis of muscle mass outcome showed increased muscle gain in the intervention groups than in the control groups. This study shows that HMB supplementation significantly improved the fat free mass in healthy older subjects and in older patients with different pathological conditions. The effect was specific for muscle mass, with no marked changes in body fat mass. However, although the effect for muscle mass was consistent, this was not so for muscle strength and physical performance where results were variable. It may be that resistance exercise in combination with HMB treatment is a stimulus for muscle improvement. Although safety data of HMB supplementation in humans has not been reported a number of studies have found no adverse side effects. The majority of studies indicate that HMB is safe. Although the optimal dosage is not clearly defined most studies advise taking 3 g of HMB daily. The authors conclude that the study shows that HMB may prevent lean body mass loss in older adults. But that effects of HMB on muscle strength and physical function may vary. Source: Facebook The paper is available at: Note that the WADA listing does not list HMB as an undesirable substance. Please ensure that you check for yourself before considering any form of supplementation. The link to the WADA list is: Issue 15 1 July 2017

2 Coaches view Is it a mental game or is the bar too high? So many hurdles and skill sets must be acquired in the racewalk event that many talented athletes lose focus on the main goal of competing. That is, to be better than you were before, to show improvement, to compete with confidence and to start winning and most of all TO BE RECOGNISED! Carl Meyer at Racewalking World Cup (Seransk, Russia) For those athletes that master competitive edge as a skill set, the ultimate reward is the recognition that is bestowed on the athletes and this comes in many forms: The print of your name in the results look Ma, I beat them all That medal for exceptional performance or position achieved The euphoria when the athlete s name and performance is mentioned during competition The annual club awards play a vital role in rewarding participation and achievement For outstanding achievement the Provincial awards and recognition And then the ULTIMATE recognition is on National level in the form of being the best in your event, in the country, in your age group, setting records and being selected to represent your country on the world stage of performance athletics. National recognition is, like so many other aspects of life, very cruel as it recognises and awards only the top performers. South African racewalking has experienced a boom since 2010 reaching a peak in 2016 with 4 of our athletes being selected for the Rio Olympic Games. These four athletes had to undergo major changes to mind set because IAAF criteria (level of performance/time) had to be reached to be allowed to compete in the biggest sporting event of the world. Then came the result of these 4 athletes (and other athletes selected in different events) none of them achieved a medal or even improved on their individual best performances (PB) and then worst of all, the implied accusation that those athletes, that did not achieve medals, just went along for the ride and did not do South Africa proud. Was that actually said definitely not! Under new management ASA decided in December 2016 to present the high performance athletes with a new set of goals that will make South Africa proud, which translates to achieving medals on the international stage. In other words, to be worthy of selection you ought to be in the top 3 in the world. To soften the blow some tweaking was done to the expected performance numbers which in essence came down to being in the top 8 of the world. There was a meeting with coaches and sports leaders but no agreement was reached. We all left with the understanding that ASA would revisit their proposed standards, but this did not happen. This means that the ASA standards are, in many areas, much higher than that of the IAAF standards. As a result all 4 of our current Olympians fail to meet the ASA A standard for selection to the upcoming IAAF World Championships. Already this higher ASA A standard has shown huge flaws in our younger age categories. Three racewalk medals got left on the table at the recent Africa Junior Championships, but our race walkers weren t selected to represent South Africa as they did not meet the ASA A Standard. The 3 athletes that got left behind all had the potential to bring these medals home as they achieved faster times in our local competitions. Mental toughness in performance athletics are acquired through regular exposure to competition conditions. The expectation that our athletes must be top 3 to 8 in the world before being exposed to International competition is simply a kill shot. Those young athletes that want to challenge the very high ASA bar will have to get used to competing against themselves. Carl Meyer (National Race Walk Coach) New 1 mile world record In a 1 mile race at the Diamond League in London a new world best was set for the seldom walked 1 mile event. Callum Wilkinson (GBR) led the pack for almost two minutes. However, once Tom Bosworth (GBR) passed him no one could touch Bosworth who went on to finish in 5:31.08, new world record. Although Erick Barrondo finished second he was later disqualified. Thus second place went to Diego Garcia (ESP) in 5: Callum Wilkinson who finished next was also disqualified and therefore third place went to Perseus Karlstrom (SWE) in 5: Issue 15 2 July 2017

3 Race-walking record Supporting the sport for 76 years Seventy-six years of serving the sport continuously! So the million dollar question is how did they do it? Race Walking Record is the official monthly magazine of the Race Walking Association, and is published monthly. The first issue dates back to November Like the SA Racewalking News it was set up to keep walkers informed. Over its 76 years of existence it has had eleven editors and when it first started there was a cost of three shillings for six months subscription. For those of you who don t quite understand the old money that is about 20c now, but remember the way money has devalued in real terms today it is probably around R60! It was formed as the mouthpiece of the Road Walking Association and the chairman of the association wrote a wonderful opening welcome. Opening welcome in Racewalking Record results of international races where Britons were taking part. This effort to supply the results and in depth reporting was bolstered by readers at every level sending in race reports. So it was that for the Moscow Olympics Ian Richards had promised a report of the British effort. Although the report that Ian had promised to write had not yet arrived by the publication of the following Record in which the results of the Olympics was given (remember this was still in the days of snail mail), it did make it for the October issue. Ian, clearly as prolific then as now, sent in a three page report! I found this really interesting reading and I have included them here so that you too can have a taste of the Moscow 1980 Olympics. Source: Race-Walking Record, 1941 From the beginning it was worth a read, but even then it needed readers and contributors not mere glancers. In 1941 they had the war and the troops as a rallying point and made good use of that fact! Something else that England had then (and perhaps even more so now) was a plethora of events. Events held not only quarterly like the Grand Prix events in Cape Town, or twice a year like we will have for the first time this year in Pretoria, but MANY events around the country every month. Best of all the organisers of these events sent the results to the editor so that they could be published and not only the results but a short race report to boot! Source: Race-Walking Record, 1980 I met Ian a few years back in Brazil where he was heading up the British team to the WMA championships still dedicated involved and very fast indeed! All in all the Record has been a wonderful resource to the British racewalker and has a history that one would like to be able to emulate! Over the years the Record has kept British racewalkers well informed of everything happening in Britain and of course the Issue 15 3 July 2017

7 Walker of the month Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond my control there is no walker highlighted this month. ASA News Circular 67 of ASA 2017 (06/29) FOREIGN ATHLETES PARTICIPATING IN SOUTH AFRICA ASA, are conducting a synchronized attempt with its members and partners, to rebuild its status in the international domain, and as such encourage international competitions and athletes in South Africa. This however must take place along clear defined IAAF and ASA Rules and Regulations. With the above initiate in mind, the participation of foreign athletes in South Africa, and not properly regulated by Race Organizers and Referees has become a challenge to ASA to the extent that it compromises the integrity of ASA internationally. ASA has in 2017 repeatedly cautioned our members, via ASA circulars, and at the 2017 ASA AGM, that the participation of international athletes in South Africa, and not properly regulated by the Race Organizers and/or Referees, compromises the integrity of South Africa as a country. ASA also cautioned members against activities of unregistered Athlete Representatives in South Africa whom represents, both international athletes and domestic athletes, and illegally negotiates on behalf of athletes at events in South Africa. It was pointed out to members that Athlete Representatives in good standing can identify themselves by means of an ID card issued by ASA. ASA recently received a letter from an international agency cautioning ASA against unregistered Athlete Representatives that violates the rights of athletes deliberately. The latest incident which compromised ASA s relationship with the IAAF, is events in South Africa whom accommodated Russian athletes to run in races in South Africa. It is common knowledge that Russia, along with its athletes are suspended to participate outside Russia. These athletes participated with clearance certificates from Russia, which are in conflict with the IAAF sanction. ASA kindly request ASA Members to assist in protecting the interest and image of athletics diligently to ensure that the service to our members improves exponentially. ASA, in collaboration with its members, have to implement corrective measures which may include a disciplinary hearing of the individual or Organizer, and if found guilty, such Disciplinary Committee has the powers to, among other, impose corrective measures such as: 1. Deregistration of the event at fault from the ASA/Provincial Fixtures List. 2. Suspension of the Referee at fault 3. Refusal to use Special Numbers for the competition 4. Refusal of the right to broadcast the event Following the discussion at the ASA AGM on 17 June 2017, regarding the above matter, the following chapter elaborates on existing ASA Rules and Regulations and are effective with immediate effect. The Eligible Foreign Athlete 1. A foreign athlete is defined as an athlete not domicile in South Africa, not an South African Citizen and participating under IAAF Rules in South Africa 2. Foreign athletes must provide a clearance certificate from the domicile country to ASA. ASA, when approving the clearance certificate will authenticate the clearance certificate and such clearance certificate plus the ASA Authentication letter must be presented at all events where the foreign athlete wishes to participate. 3. Athlete Representatives may facilitate the participation of foreign athletes in South Africa, provided that the clearance certificate of each athlete is submitted to ASA before the athlete are entered for an event in South Africa, and the foreign athlete is regarded as an elite athlete in the domicile country of the athlete 4. Foreign athletes must adhere to Rule 5.10 to be considered to represent a club in South Africa 5. A foreign athlete, not adhering to Rule 5.10, can only participate in South Africa in events which take place under the IAAF and ASA Rules. 6. Foreign athletes cannot participate in Team Competitions in South Africa, either as individual in a club team, or as a member of a team from the domicile country of the athlete. Only ASA, CAA or IAAF holds the rights to such competitions. 7. A foreign athlete entering as individual for an event, not declaring that he/she is a foreign athlete will constitute fraud. In the section of the entry form where the ID Number or birth certificate is requested, the athlete must state foreign athlete. 8. Foreign athletes competing in local competitions must participate in the colours of their country, or club they belong to in their domicile country. Alternatively foreign athletes may participate in neutral colours. No branding must be visible on the clothing other that the branding provided by the event/race organizer. 9. Clubs may enter foreign athletes as individuals for competitions provided the athlete is declared as a foreign athlete. 10. Where a foreign athlete becomes a member of a club, the foreign athlete may not participate in the colours of the club; and may not compete in the club category of the competition. 11. If the foreign athlete receives prizes or prize money while wearing the colours of the club at fault, the athletics club concerned will be held responsible for the violation of this rule and will face disciplinary action by ASA. The athlete concerned will be reported to his/her national federation for possible disciplinary action. 12. Foreign athletes must take note of Rule 2 regarding prizes and prize money (Note: this has been published unedited. It is suggested that the ASA ensures that their circulars are checked for language in future since the faults in the circular could lead to misinterpretation Ed.). Source: ASA circular ASA Racewalk Committee News Everyone is asking about the October 50km Championships and interprovincial competition! Good News! The chairman of the ASA Racewalk Committee has assured me that the event will take place. The reason that the event is not on the ASA calendar is simply because no province has yet confirmed that they would be happy to host it. However the ASA committee is in discussion with several provinces and the event WILL take place. Where and when the competition will take place is still up for discussion but, if possible, the event will be staged near the coast. If that proves impossible, then the event will be presented in Gauteng. There is a possibility that it will take place on the second Saturday in October rather than the first Saturday so for the moment please keep both options open. Issue 15 7 July 2017

Enquiries can be made at hugo.badenhorst@lantic.net or Cost R650 per person. Closing date for entries 21 July 2017 at 18:00. Grand Prix II The AGN walking commission is planning a second Grand Prix this year. Currently the chosen date is August 26. The venue will once again be at the Tuks Sports Grounds. Current thinking is that it will begin only at 9am and to fit in with the end of season for our top athletes will host on open 10km rather than 20km race. Keep this date in mind when planning your training programme! AGN 21.1km Racewalk Championship The AGN 21.1km championship will be held in conjunction with the Andrew Greyling road race on the 16 th September The requirements for being chosen for the AGN team to the Interprovincial competition in October are given in an addendum to the newsletter. AGN Racewalker training Join other AGN Racewalkers on the Tuks track on the third Thursday of the month. Don t forget the cost is R20 to take part. This month the starting time remains at 17h30 and the challenge will be to see how far you can walk (legally) in 30 minutes or one hour. (Comment: Racewalking is included in the middle to long distance course. I also see that one will never be able to achieve level 2 by coaching masters (unless they count international participation which I doubt). So If I do scratch up the hefty fee to attend (and assuming I pass), I will need to start coaching youngsters and take them all the way through to the world stage! Ed.) ASA Level 1 Technical Official course A Technical Official Level 1 Course will be presented at Pilditch Stadium from July 2017 from 8:00-16:00 Contact the AGN office for registration. A commitment fee of R100 is payable on the date of registration by 19 July Route Measurement Course A route measurement course will be conducted July 2017 at Pilditch Stadium. It is a very practical course with hands-on assistance and a maximum of 10 candidates can be accommodated. Candidates must be prepared to do some arithmetic calculations and must be able to ride a bicycle. It is highly recommended that candidates must have a bicycle available for the practical session on Saturday. Candidates must also bring a calculator or a cellphone for the calculations A commitment fee must be paid when attending the course. The fee will be R100 for club members and R300 for individuals Program: Friday, 28 Jul :00 21:00 Theory Saturday, 29 Jul :00-17:00 Practical Contact the AGN Office for the entry form before July (Comment: Whilst it is highly creditable that these courses are being conducted it is simply crazy to hold the all within 2 weeks of each other with 2 of the courses overlapping AGN would be much wiser to hold courses regularly say every second month with long term planning so that participants can plan them into their year and put in leave if required Ed) CGA News Source: Chris Britz Issue 15 8 July 2017

Youngsters seem to feel the need to fit in and racewalking here in our province seems not to be the activity matching those needs. Let s be honest, you must be a determined and keen Teenage Walker to decide to come along to Bellville to be coached by This Old Man and participate on track together with a gang of Ouma s and Oupa s. The fact that some of these elders are fine walkers, experienced, and super fit athletes, is to the average youngster no comfort at all. I have read recently Dave McGovern s notes on younger racewalkers, and he had this to say: - 1. The easiest way to turn potential young racewalking stars into burned out flashes in the pan, is to push them too hard. Youngsters need encouragement; they don t need bullwhips or nagging. If it s not fun, they are not going to stick with it. 2. There is a history of trying to form an unrealistic work ethic upon young racewalkers that winds up being too much for them. It s great to see fast times from precocious 14 year olds, but not at the expense of losing these athletes forever six months down the walk due to injuries or burnout. 3. Before the age of 16 or so, racewalking should be a strictly part time activity. Don t only focus on racewalking, join other peer groups for cross country runs or a game of tennis, or join the school track team for a couple of sessions. 4. A young walkers training should centre on building endurance with easy 8 to 10 km walks, and developing good technique with drills and supervised economy intervals, occasional tempo walks and threshold intervals to prepare for competition are acceptable, but these workouts should not be over emphasized. 5. Include lots of technique drill sessions in your training during your track sessions. Also fast economy intervals of m, all with perfect technique, however these sessions are not punishing VO2 max. intervals. Realize that there is a distinct difference between relative fast economy intervals and VO2 max sessions. 6. Even though RW is growing in popularity and acceptance as a real athletic pursuit, many young walkers still feel self-conscious about training out on the roads. Nothing fazes me anymore, but to a young walker this can be pretty disconcerting. Distance work is critical in the development of young walkers. Try and find a safe haven to do your distance training, avoid training on unprotected roads. Issue 15 9 July 2017

10 7. Most racing opportunities for youth walkers are in the 1500m to 5000m or 5 km range. Fortunate because it forces youngsters to learn to walk with a quick turn-over rate. Overburdened walkers will quit the sport long before they ve gained the physical maturity required to be competitive in the open 10km, 20km, 30km, 50km races. Ensure you keep the competing in races fun and low key, and if there is a future star out there, the talent will eventually reveal itself. Making use and putting it into practice and gaining best possible advantage from your hips, together with all the other subtleties and nuances of good and proper racewalking technique requires years of training before one can reach top competitive speeds. Here is something to think about and to get a quick idea of what is going on as your pelvis flexes forward and lists slightly at the same time, which gives us racewalkers that peculiar looks while racewalking, that side to side wiggle. Stand straight, both feet together, knees fully flexed and locked. Keep one leg flexed and locked, unlock by snapping the other knee forward and watch your hip on that side quickly snap forward and also tilt down a little. While standing with both feet on the ground, rotate your pelvis forward and backward a few times. As your pelvis flexes forward, you can observe how much it would contribute to your stride length if you were doing this movement in conjunction with your leg swing. This forward flexion of the pelvis also allows racewalkers to achieve the needed in-line foot placement which eliminates unwanted lateral movement and upper body sway which affects a racewalkers speed. I guess I was always more about doing than having. I ve chased adventure and challenge more than money and the possessions it would buy. Having that shiny Rolex makes a statement, I m somebody, I m worth a lot of money! I think my plastic Timex sports watch, with the buttons worn down, makes a statement as well, I go the distance. That watch has been with me as I pushed my limits, when I was so tired I couldn t stand. It will be there if I m victorious or if I m humbled. It doesn t judge me but it will tell me if my effort was good each time I test myself. My watch isn t a symbol of a rich man, mine is the timepiece of an athlete. Dave Kirgan None. 12 From the archives, July 2016! From the archives Opening of the Tuks Track Editorial I tried walking yesterday after a break of about 7 weeks. The road was very slightly uphill but when I looked at my watch after about 500m I saw that my time was around 5:30 per km. Now I should point out that normally I struggle to get under 8:00 per km for a couple of km whilst I warm up. So (not very wisely) I decided to keep up the pace since on my first day out I had decided to just do a 3 km walk, and I felt fantastic to be out on the road again. I was very bucked when I got home after 3 km in an average speed of 5:50. I felt so good (for the first time in months) that I decided to spend the afternoon weeding in the vegetable garden. After a few hours of this I realised that I am a very poor self-coach of course you should not race without a warmup, and of course you should not be going all out on your first walk after a 7 week break and the muscles around my hips were telling me this VERY loudly yesterday and today my hamstrings have joined the chorus! I will start again at a much more sedate pace and hopefully build up to some real speed if the health allows in time for October. During the past few months I have refereed at a few races and discovered that cheating is rampant! Whilst doing the checking of numbers to assist participants to be legal for the event one finds that many of those taking part are not only abusing the rules but blatantly cheating! Some are just doing there best to breal thae system. CGA: Brenda Wakfer (Chairman) Lesley van Buuren (Secretary) Sheldon George (Finance) Bernard Donnelly (Technical Officials) Thabiso Tsagane (Coach) Rose Shabalala (Ass Secretary) We had people with only one licence number (a friend is probably wearing the other (and so they cheat you and me by not paying their fair share to run the sport). One was wearing a 2010 licence several others, although wearing the race number, had no licence at all. And then there was Mr funny that though it a good idea to sew on his number upside down and back to front (with the right side against the shirt). Upside down numbers are common these people thin that they are making some sort of statement about ASA but seriously, if you have something to say, say it. So it is that I appeal to walkers to ensure that they obey all of the rules even if you do not like them they are nevertheless the rules of the game and to put it quite simply, either obey the rules or go away and don t take part! I would also encourage you to attend a technical official course and come along and see a race from the other side. It is an eye opener. Oh yes I do also need to tell you it is very hard work.
