8 Spectators Guide The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, is where all the action takes place, from the swim to transition to the spontaneous, ecstatic, and sometimes tear-jerking displays of emotion at the finish line. Spectators will also find an expo area featuring premium performance apparel and accessories for the trail and beyond, great food and drinks, and a full slate of fun activities for the family including kids games, a bounce castle, face painter, and more. SWIM: The swim starts at D.T. Fleming Beach fronting the Ritz, and there are plenty of great vantage points to watch the start from the beach and lawn above. Pros are easy to spot with their identifying swim caps - men in blue and women in pink. A short beach sprint mid-race gives spectators a chance to pick out their friends and family from the field. T1 and T2: The swim-to-bike and bike-to-run transitions are located just up the beach from the swim start, and spectators may view the change-over from any position around the boundary. BIKE: Unfortunately, there s really no place to watch the bike (aside from the first mile out and back) as the course is on private land not open to the public. RUN: The run course can be accessed by following the red arrows backwards from the finish line, along the beach, and into the forest trails. 8

Scientists at the 2016 International Coral reef Symposium and the 2016 IUCN World Conservation Congress agreed on the negative impacts of oxybenzone and other sunscreen chemicals on corals, and recommended use be eliminated in areas with coral reefs. We ask that you do not use sunscreen that contains oxybenzone (benzophenone-3; BP-3). It has been shown to increase the rate of coral bleaching, and to cause deformities in coral larvae, making them unable to swim, settle, or form new colonies. Sunscreen chemicals wash off users when they enter the ocean, particularly if it is applied just before getting in. Read the label on sunscreen to make sure that is does not include oxybenzone. Preferred options include zinc oxide and titanium oxide. Baggage Storage Baggage storage is NOT available. Please leave your valuables at home. 16

29 The Elite Race More than 50 of the fastest XTERRA racers in the world will line-up for the $100,000 showdown in Maui this year, including the last four men to win XTERRA Worlds; Bradley Weiss from South Africa (2017), Mauricio Mendez from Mexico (2016) Josiah Middaugh from the U.S. (2015), and Ruben Ruzafa from Spain (2008/ ). Those are your favorites, and while it ll be tough to stop any of them, many will try. Francisco Serrano from Mexico won the ITU Cross Tri World Title and was fourth in Maui last year. Sam Osborne from New Zealand has proven he can win against the best. Roger Serrano from Spain, along with Francois Carloni from France give the European contingent plenty to cheer for. Others not to be overlooked include the young-gun Sam Long from the U.S., Karsten Madsen from Canada, and Rom Akerson from Costa Rica. In the women s elite race, we ll honor a new champ for the first time in four years as Bermuda s Flora Duffy sits this year out due to injury. That leaves two-time XTERRA World Champion Lesley Paterson as the women s favorite. The Scottish Rocket won all three U.S. stops on the XTERRA Pan Am Tour this season and says she s stronger and faster than ever before. Top contenders include XTERRA European Champion Brigitta Poor from Hungary, who was fourth in Maui last year. Poor won eight races on the World Tour this year. Suzie Snyder from the U.S. is strong, Michelle Flipo from Mexico has shown signs of greatness, and 3x XTERRA World Champion Melanie McQuaid from Canada is back in Maui to prove she still has what it takes. XTERRA Asia-Pacific Tour Champ Penny Slater from Australia, the European Tour Champ Carina Wasle from Austria, the legendary Swiss Miss Renata Bucher with her 33 career World Tour wins, and her Aloha Racing teammate from New Zealand, Lizzie Orchard, will also contend. Star-studded fields for sure, and with the unpredictable nature of XTERRA it really is anybody s guess who will take the top step on Sunday. Who is your pick?
