2 Aloha and Welcome! The off-road adventurous spirit of XTERRA reaches out to everyone, including the local community and visitors to Maui, with an invitation to experience Kapalua s world class trails. The trail runs are held each year in conjunction with the XTERRA World Championship - the grand finale of the XTERRA World Tour that attracts athletes from 44 countries to the island. XTERRA week on Maui is an exciting time. There are a number of activities open to runners, including free XTERRA University clinics with elite athletes, a Paul Mitchell hair cut-a-thon for charity, great stuff for the kids, and a festive XTERRA expo. We wish you great racing, much fun, and if you are a visitor, a wonderful stay on Maui and in the Hawaiian Islands. See you soon! 2

Event Address The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua is located at One Ritz-Carlton Drive, Lahaina, HI Phone: The XTERRA Village is located on the lobby level of the Ritz-Carlton and is where you will find packet pickup, registration for new entries, and our expo. The start and finish are located behind the hotel (beach side). Look for the big arch over the road near the golf course for the start line. The finish line is further down the hill, closer to the beach. 3

4 Parking On race day, please park in the XTERRA Event lot. Follow the XTERRA parking signs on Hanoapiilani Highway past the entrance to Kapalua Resort (Office Road) and turn left into the parking lot. On packet pickup days Wednesday through Friday you can park at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua parking lot. Note: Outside of official packet pickup hours, this lot is for hotel guests only. Office Road Leave No Trace The XTERRA World Championship team asks that you respect the environment and the trails. Please leave no trace of rubbish on the race course, or in the Race Village and finish area before, during or after the race. Trash can be left at aid stations. 4

XTERRA University Clinics Race Pack Contents And Instructions Runner bib* please attach this in the FRONT of your body using the safety pins provided OR your race belt. *Cutting/alteration of run bib is not allowed. After you pick up your race number packet, visit the event t-shirt pickup counter and collect your official race shirt and bag of partner goodies. Sorry, no t-shirts for Kimo s Keiki K or children running in the 3.3K. What To Bring On Race Day Race belt for race bib (safety pins will be included in your race packs should you not have a race belt. Running shoes Sunglasses Sunscreen* Sunscreen Help protect Hawaii s reefs. Scientists at the 2016 International Coral reef Symposium and the 2016 IUCN World Conservation Congress agreed on the negative impacts of oxybenzone and other sunscreen chemicals on corals, and recommended use be eliminated in areas with coral reefs. We ask that you do not use sunscreen that contains oxybenzone (benzophenone-3; BP-3). It has been shown to increase the rate of coral bleaching, and to cause deformities in coral larvae, making them unable to swim, settle, or form new colonies. Sunscreen chemicals wash off users when they enter the ocean, particularly if it is applied just before getting in. Read the label on sunscreen to make sure that is does not include oxybenzone. Preferred options include zinc oxide and titanium oxide. 7

8 Practice Course Hours/Course Markings The trail run course is open for practice daily sunrise to sunset. Please be advised that trails are open to the public and be respectful of other users. The course will be clearly marked using a mixture of core flute signs and red arrows as well as bright tape tied to trees to re- assure you that you are going the right way. Please watch out for course signage along with our course marshals who will be pointing you in the right direction. Aid Stations Run: Four water stations will serve water and Gatorade Endurance, at Mile 1, Mile 2, Mile 3.5, and Mile 5. Finish: Athlete Recovery will offer water, Gatorade Endurance, and a variety of post-race recovery foods. Rain or Shine The XTERRA Kapalua Trail Runs will be held rain or shine and will only be postponed in extreme circumstances. If weather conditions may potentially cause any postponement or cancellation of the event, race organisers will communicate in the days prior to the event via , and on the website to race participants. If a decision is to be made on the day of the event, participants may call the event day hotline number ( ) and announcements will be made at the Race Village. Please note the event will be staged unless extreme weather conditions occur on the day of or leading up to the event. i.e. not just a bit of rain 8

10 Toilet Facilities Portable toilets will be located on the lawn behind The Beach House. Results Provisional results will be published live at jtltiming.com, and full results will be posted on race evening. Personalized race result cards will also be distributed in the finish area. Medical XTERRA s medical team of Maui-based physicians and nurses will be headquartered at the finish area and out on course throughout the race. If you feel unwell at any time during the event please alert the closest marshal who will arrange for medical personnel to meet you. 10

Hawaiian cultural practitioner, Clifford Naeole, will lead a special pre-race sunrise cleansing and rejuvenation ceremony, Hiuwai and E ala E This is your chance to make a fresh start and experience the Hawaii s rich, ancient culture. All XTERRA athletes, friends and family are welcome. Wear your swim suit. It is not necessary that you fully immerse yourself in the ocean. You may stand at the water s edge. Towels will be provided. 12 Awards Ceremony Awards ceremonies will begin at 10:30am for all races. Medals and prizes will be presented to the top three winners in each division. T S Restaurant $100 gift certificates will be awarded to first place male and female overall in each Trail Run and to first place Maui male and female residents (if not the same). There will also be random drawings for all trail run athletes. Race Rules Race numbers: must be worn on the front of the body. Cutting numbers or altering with sponsor stickers is not allowed.
