ABOUT THE PAUL MITCHELL XTERRA TRAIL RUNNING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP The crown jewel of the XTERRA World Tour Trail Run Series is the Paul Mitchell XTERRA Trail Running World Championship, and the majestic Kualoa Ranch in Hawaii has served as the host site since the creation of this prestigious event in On December 4, 2016, runners from around the world will gather at Kualoa Ranch on the northeastern side of the island of Oahu. The 21-kilometer half-marathon is the world championship race, and the course takes runners through some of the most diverse and scenic terrain on the planet. It is an event open to runners of all ages, with skill levels that can range from elite to beginner. In addition to the 21K, a 10K, a 5K, and an adventure walk are offered. The trails at Kualoa Ranch are normally closed to the public, so this is a rare opportunity for runners to experience this unique and natural setting. Visit the event website here. Pick-up is at 7am at the Waikiki Beach Walk next to Yard House on Lewers Street. You ll arrive at the ranch a little before 8am, and the first bus will head back to the same spot in Waikik from Kualoa Ranch at around 12:30pm. We ll have another bus leave at 1pm, then 1:30pm, and the last bus will head back around 2:30pm. It s a good way to save on parking, gas, rental car, and directional worries! Buy your shuttle tickets at packet pickup in Waikiki on Saturday. Rental Cars National and Enterprise are the official rental car companies of XTERRA and offer great rates. 5

6 RACE PACKET PICK UP AND NEW ENTRIES Saturday, December 3 Waikiki Beach Walk 9 am 5 pm We ll be at the grassy area next to the Yard House Restaurant at 226 Lewers Street for packet pick-up and new race registration. If you know anyone that wants in but has not yet signed-up tell them to come down to Waikiki on Saturday by 5pm as online registration is now closed. Note: We are not able to transfer registrations or provide refunds, but you can switch race distances if necessary when you pick up your packet. Can I pick-up my friend s packet? Yes, if they signed themselves up with our online registration. Parking for Packet Pick-up in Waikiki on Saturday Find your own on the streets of Waikiki or valet park at the Embassy Suites (enter from Beachwalk street) which offers validated parking between 10am 3pm, with same day Waikiki Beachwalk shop or restaurant receipt for $20 or more. Sunday, December 4 Kualoa Ranch Pick up your packet on race morning at Kualoa Ranch between 7:00-8:30 am. Parking at Kualoa Ranch $5 fee charge per car for entry to Kualoa Ranch. You can pre-purchase parking at Waikiki packet pick up on Saturday. Place pre-paid parking sign on your dashboard for quick entry. 7 FREE XTERRA UNIVERSITY CLINICS PRESENTED BY PAUL MITCHELL Reigning and three-time XTERRA Trail Run World Champ Patrick Smyth, Ashley Jensen (5 th female last year) and American half-marathon record holder Ryan Hall are the featured speakers at this year s XTERRA University clinics. They both take place on Saturday (the day before the race) at the Waikiki Beach Walk. Registration and packet pick-up will be held in the same location, so it will be a good chance to grab your race number and listen to some expert advice. Ryan Hall will speak at 10 a.m., and Patrick Smyth and Ashley Jensen will go on at 2 p.m. The clinics, presented by Paul Mitchell, are free and open to runners of all ages. Each session will allow time for Q&A. FREE YOGA CLINIC Enjoy a free yoga clinic with yoga instructors and trail run athletes Susie Stephen and Lindsay Annis Bliss. They will demonstrate the various yoga stretches and discuss mind, body and breath connectedness that directly impact running. WHAT TO BRING TO KUALOA RANCH Here is a list of things to bring with you on race day: Race belt for race bib (safety pins will be included in your race packs should you not have a race belt). Running shoes Sunglasses Sunscreen $5 cash to pay for parking (if you didn t buy a parking pass on Saturday) Change of clothes Towel Umbrella Mosquito repellant Patience (while you re in line to park : ) TIPS You ll have easy access to your car to retrieve whatever you need, and we ll also have a bag check at the ranch. Feel free to bring some beach chairs and a cooler to enjoy the valley for a bit after your run. And, please leave your dog at home, we love them too but remember it s a working cattle ranch 7

8 DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO KUALOA RANCH Take the H-1 Freeway to the LIKELIKE Highway / Route 63. Proceed up the LIKELIKE Highway and through the Wilson Tunnel. Descend towards Kaneohe town and exit onto KAHEKILI Highway/ Route 83, heading north. You will go straight through the light at the end of the KAHEKILI exit. Continue along Kahekili Highway - note that the road becomes Kamehameha Highway as you pass the historic "Hygienic Store" in the village of Kahalu`u. In about 10 minutes you will see signs indicating you are approaching the Kualoa Ranch entrance which will be on your left as you round the curve past Mokoli`i Island (Chinaman's Hat). Go past the main entrance to Kualoa Ranch and in about one mile you ll see the signs to the next left into the XTERRA festivities. There are 2 entrances, so if the first entrance is backed up, pass that and go to the next entrance. A separate line for fast entry for those with a pre-paid parking pass will be provided. TRAFFIC AND PARKING INFORMATION TO THE XTERRA RACE 1 MILE PAST MAIN RANCH ENTRANCE There is a one lane highway in both directions to the Ranch, so heavy traffic is expected. Please come early, set-up and relax! The gates open at 7 a.m. It is $5 per car, and to help speed things up you can prepay and get a parking pass at packet pick-up in Waikiki on Saturday. Place the parking pass on the dashboard of your car. If you can t come Saturday, please bring a $5 bill on race morning. Note that if you are coming from Honolulu the entrances are past the Kualoa Ranch main entrance. We ll have two entrances into the middle of Kaaawa Valley the traditional surf gate entry for those coming from Honolulu and another entry for those coming from the North Shore. Please note that when traffic starts to back-up at surf gate volunteers will waive you down to the next gate. The distance to parking is the same and will relieve traffic on Kamehameha Highway so please go with the flow. WEATHER FORECAST Looks like it ll be a wet one! For the latest weather updates watch our friend Guy Hagi at Hawaii News Now (KGMB/8 and KHNL/13), and prepare for wet and muddy conditions. Rain or Shine, the race will go on. 8

PAUL MITCHELL CUT-A-THON On Sunday, December 4, pro stylists from Paul Mitchell will be on site at Kualoa Ranch to cut/style hair from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A $15 donation per person is suggested, and 100 percent of it will go to the Challenged Athletes Foundation, which helps physically-challenged athletes achieve their athletic goals. Last year, runners raised $1,500 and we challenge you to beat that donation this year. CELEBRATE AT OUTRIGGER REEF WAIKIKI BEACH RESORT ON SUNDAY NIGHT After the race, head to Waikiki for the XTERRA Trail Running World Championship After-Party. It will be at the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort-Diamond Head Terrace/Courtyard. The party starts at 6:30 p.m., and will feature a video presentation from the race at 8 pm. Great prize giveaways all night including the grand prize of two complimentary nights at the Outrigger Reef Hotel (partial ocean view accommodations) with a $50 food gift certificate from the Kani Ka Pila Grille. There will be special drink specials all night and a special $16 XTERRA menu including: burgers/fries, fish sandwich/fries or Chinese Chicken Salad. **First 70 runners get a free dinner! Show your race bib at the dinner check in table. FOOD VENDORS Oahu based BBQ Delicatessen will serve breakfast and lunch on race day. They offer a delicious taste of barbecue, smoked meats and local street eats. Here s their menu: 11 hour smoked beef brisket, pork or beef ribs, smoked chicken, pulled pork. Side dishes: purple sweet potato, tomato, cucumber, ponzu salad, Japanese rice, quinoa salad, local organic greens and cornbread. Tasty, local, fresh and unique! We ll also have Kona Ice serving premium tropical shaved ice; the finest icy treat on the planet. 9

10 THE XTERRA VILLAGE In addition to the Paul Mitchell Cut-A-Thon, there will be numerous other vendors on site at Kualoa Ranch on race day. Food truck and various product tents including XTERRA Gear will be open throughout the day. HAWAIIAN BLESSING Kahu Kelekona Bishaw with Kahu Services, will lead a traditional Hawaiian Blessing for all runners and spectators at 8:45 am Sunday morning at the main stage. XTERRA KID S ZONE AND KID S SPRINT Sign your child up for the free kid s sprint on Sunday at the XTERRA Kids Zone tent starting at 9am (until 10:30am). They ll get a race bib just like the runners and can have fun in the kids zone and run in the kids race too where everyone wins, gets a medal and a free shave ice courtesy of Outrigger Resorts! Distance is age appropriate this is all about fun! The XTERRA Kids Zone will be open from 8 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m., and it will offer children a chance to participate in fun activities. Several challenge stations will be set up, including an obstacle course. BAG DROP If you need to leave anything like car keys, special food or clothing we will have a bag drop at the wood shelter near registration. No valuables please, and make sure your bag or keys are marked or tagged with your race # and name using stickers/baggies and markers supplied at the Bag Drop. 10

11 COURSE DESCRIPTION The start for all three race distances is at the Kaaawa Valley base camp. Runners leave on a hard-packed dirt road and with a quarter-mile face their first task a long, undulating 1- mile climb. At the 1.5-mile mark, the 5K runners will head down a pasture and back towards the ocean and the finish line. The world championship 21K and 10K runners will continue on the upper road until heading steeply downhill, some on road, some on grass towards the back of the valley. A hard right and the 21K and 10K runners head to the very back of Kaaawa Valley before turning around and connecting to the scenic single track. Interesting note: this section of single track was created years ago for the legendary Hawaiian Mountain Tour bike races. It s high pasture that dips into volcanic gulches to rise again into the sun. You ll do this several times before the 10K heads to the finish. For the 21K world champ runners, the fun has just begun. The second aid station for 21K and 10K is the beginning of the single track. The 10K runners will take a left turn down the slope about a quarter-mile into the single track and take their own, new single track back down the mountain. Meanwhile, the 21K runners will eventually get back on dirt roads and past a cave from the movie Pearl Harbor as they move from one valley to another. After aid station 3, runners will head into some up-and-down single/double track. Here, runners venture deep into forest, and out on the edges with spectacular ocean overlooks and finally a dip into a dark, tropical rain forest with three stream crossings. If it looks familiar, think about the scenes from the movie Battleship. Just when runners might be thinking this isn t so bad, the terrain starts to climb. Easy at first, and then brutally steep, and totally exposed to the sun. Just as you think it has leveled, the lie comes true and it is up again. At last a feed station that appears to be a dead end, but it s not. We are taking you up narrow single track by narrow, we mean a foot at most the spine that separates Hakipu u and Kaaawa valleys. You ll wish you could stop as you can see a thousand miles of blue Pacific Ocean no matter which way you turn. Then the single track plunges steep downhill, where nobody goes except for the 21K runners on this day. Muddy, rutty, steep drop-offs, slimy and slippery. We ve put ropes to help you stay upright and I guarantee you will need to use them. The good news? That steep downhill section is only about a quarter-mile. At the bottom, you ll find the terrain familiar as you return to the back of Kaaawa Valley and run that gorgeous, fast and soft single track to the finish. 11

13 AID STATIONS There will be two aid stations for the 5K race, three for the 10K, and nine for the 21K. Locations are identified on the race map. Gatorade and water served at all stations, and PowerBar gel packs available at key spots. Please do not trash the course. Dispose of cups and gel packs in designated areas at aid stations. COURSE MARKINGS The course will be clearly marked using a mixture of core flute signs and red arrows as well as bright tape tied to trees to re-assure you that you are going the right way. Please watch out for course signage along with our course marshals who will be pointing you in the right direction. RACE START TIMES AND INFORMATION 9:00 am - 21k World Championship 9:10 am - 10k 9:20 am - 5k 9:25 am - Adventure walk 10:45am - Free kids sprint Be mindful of your race start time and course. All three runs head in the same direction but have different cut-offs to head back towards the finish. Wear your bib on the front of your body so marshals can guide you in the right direction. Race start line - There is no official lineup formation at the starting line, but as a common courtesy, the elite runners (you know who you are) should be allowed to line up in the front of the slower runners (you know who you are). The 10K and 5K races should follow the same guidelines with faster runners in the front. 13

14 COMPETITION RULES Pre-running of the course is not permitted. Violators will be disqualified. Competitors must display their run number on the front of their body. No advertising stickers, writing or alterations of the race number are allowed. Number holders are permitted. Shortcutting is NOT permitted and may result in disqualification. All athletes are required to stay on the designated trail that is marked as the race course. It is the athlete s responsibility to stay on the race course. Lack of tape or barriers on the course will not constitute excuse for cutting the course. Go Pros are allowed, but NO SELFIE STICKS OR OTHER DEVICES THAT ARE MOUNTED ON THE BODY are allowed due to safety issues. Protests of any nature must be submitted within one hour of the finish time of the person lodging the protest. Protests must be submitted in writing by the accuser. Saying somebody cut the course is not good enough- it must be written and described as accurately as possible. All protests will be investigated. No headphones, earbuds, ipods or MP3 players allowed during the race. Sorry, we like to run with ours too but it s not allowed during the race. In particular at this race, Kualoa Ranch has their regular bus, ATV, and horseback tours running through the valley and it is imperative you are aware of what s happening around you. Dropping trash outside of aid stations is not allowed, and may result in disqualification. PRIZES Awards Ceremony The 5K and 10K awards will start at 11:00 am. The XTERRA Trail Running World Championship (21K) will begin a 12:00 pm. 15 TIMING We re using JTL Timing, it s a manual system so you won t have to wear a chip on your ankle. We ve been using this system for more than a decade and it is the best, especially for gnarly trails, and it s awesome you don t have to wear a chip, don t ya think! LEAVE NO TRACE The XTERRA Trail Running World Championship team asks that you respect the environment and the trails. Please leave no trace of rubbish on the race course, or in the Race Village and finish area before, during or after the race. VOLUNTEERS We are looking for people who have a few hours to spare to help with the event. We need volunteers for the following times and events. Volunteer check-in will be at the XTERRA Expo at Kualoa Ranch- Kaaawa Valley Entrance. All volunteers will receive an XTERRA event t-shirt, drinks, and lunch. 7 am Volunteer Check-In for Run Support: What experience or qualifications are required to be an XTERRA volunteer? No experience necessary You must be at least 15 years old, or 12, if accompanied by an adult You must have a willingness and desire to help others You must have a few hours to spare 15
