3 XTERRA Trail Run National Championship Overview The XTERRA Trail Run National Championship returns to beautiful Snowbasin Resort on September 16, and will once again attract some of the best trail runners from across the country. Trail Run Nationals was staged at Snowbasin Resort for the first time in 2011, and it received rave reviews. Runners of all ages and skill levels can participate in the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship, as there is no qualifying process. Last year, close to 500 trail runners from 30 different states gathered at Snowbasin Resort for the event. There will be three different courses to accommodate the various levels of runners. A 21-kilometer half-marathon course will serve as the national championship course, but there will also be a 10K and a 5.8K. Every age-group winner from the 21K course will be awarded a free entry to race at the 2018 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship at Kualoa Ranch, Oahu, Hawaii on December 2, The top five overall males and top five overall females from the 21K course will also receive prize money. Medals and other prizes will also be awarded to the top age-group runners from all three courses. XTERRA Trail Run Nationals will be held one day after the XTERRA Pan American Championship off-road triathlon to create the ultimate XTERRA racing weekend. The two events will bring more than 1,000 of the nation s very best amateur and professional triathletes and trail runners to Northern Utah to battle for the title of XTERRA National Champion. Take exit #324 onto US-89N, merge onto I-84E. Exit #92 Mountain Green. Head east on Old Highway, turn left on State Road 167 heading north (just east of the Sinclair Station). For trail runners, there s a special session on Saturday at Snowbasin Resort at 10:30 am with Tina Weissauer , 2017 and 2018 XTERRA SoCal Trail Run Series Regional Champ and XTERRA Trail Run Ambassador and Adam Danks, the 2017 XTERRA Arizona Trail Run Series Regional Champ. The FREE session targets trail running techniques, race preparation, and the specifics of the Snowbasin course. There will be time for Q&A during the session. XTERRA REGIONAL CHAMPION INTRODUCTION Meet the 2018 XTERRA Regional Champions! An introduction will be held in the XTERRA Village on Friday at 3 pm. XTERRA KIDS SPRINT/BIKE RACE Youngsters 10 and under can join in the FREE kid s bike race on Friday at 4 pm and a FREE kid s sprint at 5 pm at Ogden s Amphitheater Park (corner 25 th /Grant). There will also be a FREE kid s sprint on Sunday at Snowbasin Resort at 11 am. It s just a short fun race around the finish area where everyone is a winner. Parents, register your child prior to the fun run at XTERRA Kid s Zone on Friday and XTERRA Registration on Sunday. PAUL MITCHELL CUT-A-THON Racing makes you feel good. 7 COURSE DESCRIPTION AND CONDITIONS For this year s race, the course is very dry, but the footing remains sure and clean. The surface is primarily dirt, but as you climb higher, you hit a few rocky patches. The switchbacks are bermed, and the footing is best at the top of the berm. The run down from Sardine Peak has the perfect amount of slope so you can let go and truly fly if you are an experienced trail runner. If you are new to trail racing, this downhill is a perfect opportunity to relax and enjoy. There are few rocks and roots on the way down, and while it s always good to be careful about where you place your feet, the great descent from Sardine Peak is your chance to let loose and enjoy the rewards of your fitness. This time of year, the shade is cool, the sun is warm, and the fall colors are starting to burn red on the mountains. As you shake some elevation, the yellow poplars and Black-eyed Susans will guide you down towards Wheeler Creek. Before the finish, you ll head back up again - so save a little something for that - but after the climb to Sardine Peak, it s nothing you can t handle. For those curious about the elevation, the low point hits in at 6,133 feet. High point is just shy of 7,300 feet. Expect 2,200 feet of climbing. 8 GENERAL RULES No headphones of any kind are permitted while competing. Competitors must display their run number on the front of their body. No advertising stickers, writing, cutting or alterations of the race number are allowed. VIOLATORS WILL BE PENALIZED and incur a cash penalty of up to $500 deducted from prize money and/or time penalties from 2 minutes. Number holders are permitted. Cutting the Course: Short-cutting and/or cutting trail switchbacks on course is not permitted and may result in disqualification. All athletes are required to stay on the designated trail that is marked as the race course. It is the athlete s responsibility to know the designated race course. Lack of tape or barriers on the course will not constitute an excuse for cutting the course. Protests of any nature must be submitted within one hour of the finish time of the person lodging the protest. Protests must be submitted in writing and signed by the accuser. Saying somebody cut the course is not good enough - it must be written and described as accurately as possible. All protests will be investigated. Because of the nature of XTERRA, it is not always possible to see infractions. XTERRA is in the woods, out of sight and marshaled only where necessary. In every case there will need to be verification of the infraction. Officials will not be drawn into a hear-say argument. Competitors may not use inline skates or other devices, human or otherwise powered, to assist them in running. COURSE MARKINGS The course will be clearly marked using a mixture of core flute signs and red arrows as well as bright tape tied to trees to re- assure you that you are going the right way. Please watch out for course signage along with our course marshals who will be pointing you in the right direction. The XTERRA Trail Running National Championship (21K) will begin a 11:45 am. You must be present to receive your award. They cannot be mailed.
